PUBLISHED HIGHLIGHTS AUTUMN 2020

Francis Bacon The Measure of Excess Yves Peyre • An all-new, thoroughly illustrated monograph by a personal friend of the artist • Over 220 images, including major works such as Three Studies for a Crucifixion, assembled in a beautifully designed book • Fascinating biographical information presented alongside highly accessible in-depth art analysis 9781788840996 130 illus. 336pp 290 x 240mm Hardback £45.00 / $60.00 Autumn 2020

An intimate insight into the life and work of Francis Bacon, written by Yves Peyré, a close friend of the artist. This comprehensive monograph details Bacon’s artistic journey, from his early design work in the 1920s to his disturbing, emotive triptychs of the 1980s. Tormented, twisted, and jarringly dissonant, Bacon’s divided vision of the world swung between civilisation and barbarism, beauty and ugliness, life and death. His study of classical culture and western mythology led him to depict darkly sublime worlds of violence and madness that intrigue as much as they evoke visceral disgust. This monograph begins with a biography, relating the life of Francis Bacon, his stories and inspirations; before delving into a sharp yet intelligible analysis of his work. Peyré’s personal connection with Bacon makes Francis Bacon a detailed and touching story, inviting the reader on a philosophical, poetic and artistic stroll through the artist’s mind.

Informative biographies detail each artist’s legacy, while their tragic deaths lead us to wonder what heights they might’ve reached, had their lives not been cut short. Desperately Young introduces the masterpieces left behind by some of the greatest rising stars in fine art – all of whom died before their thirtieth birthday. Richly illustrated, Desperately Young presents prime examples of each artist’s work, demonstrating how our cultural heritage is just a little narrower for their loss. From America to Japan, the mid fourteen-hundreds to the late twentieth century, this book hails the acknowledged greats and introduces those who died before they could leave an indelible mark on history. A compendium of 111 artists who fell prey to sickness, warfare, heartbreak or bad luck, Desperately Young is the only book to provide an in-depth study of artists who died young. With works from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Frédéric Bazille, Thomas Girtin, Bob Thompson, Ergon Schiele, Ernst Klimt, Jeanne Hébuterne, Kaita Murayama, Hermann Stenner, Maurycy Gottlieb, Fyodor Vasilyev, Marie Bashkirtseff, Richard Parkes Bonington, Luisa Anguissola, Walter Deverell, August Macke and Pauline Boty – among many others.

Beatlemania Four Photographers on the Fab Four (1963-1965) Tony Barrell • The rise of the Fab Four – the band in their fledgling years of fame • Incredible photos, many unseen, from the cameras of Terry O’Neill, Norman Parkinson, Michael Ward and Derek Bayes • The perfect gift for any fan who keeps Beatlemania alive today 9781788840866 approx. 200 Illus, 240 pages 300 x 237mm Hardback £35.00 / $50.00 Autumn 2020

The Beatles ascended like no band before, hurtling to the dizzy heights of international stardom in the early 1960s. Their countercultural vibes and unmistakable talent are still the subject of much discussion today – as is the rabid devotion of their fans. But how did one pop group become, as Lennon infamously quipped, “more popular than Jesus”? The work of four photographers provides an enlightening insight into the band’s rise to fame. Ward captured the Fab Four when Beatlemania was still confined to their own home city – the band braved the icy Liverpool streets for a promotional shoot during the Big Freeze of ’62-63. O’Neill crossed paths with The Beatles amid the buzz of the Swinging Sixties, resonating with the band in 1963 as the only on-scene photographer of their age. Parkinson delivered a deceptively relaxed shoot later that year, when the band were recording their second album; while Bayes captured never-before-published candid shots of The Beatles filming Help! in 1965. Accompanying these pictures, Tony Barrell’s text delves into the Beatlemania phenomenon – the good, the bad, the ugly and the odd. From the creation of their early hit records to the hails of confectionery that peppered stages after John claimed George had eaten his jelly babies, Beatlemania reveals how one band became a lasting sensation.

Dream Lovers: John and Yoko in NYC The Photographs of Brian Hamill • New and unseen photographs of Beatles icon, John Lennon • A series of essays from the photographer relate the exclusive story behind the images captured in this book • Foreword by Pete Hamill – bestselling author, award-winning columnist and editor for The New York Post and The New York Daily News, essayist and educator 9781788840972 approx. 90 photographs. 124pp 250 x 200mm Hardback £25.00 / $35.00 Autumn 2020

John Lennon’s life, death and music shaped the world. His reputation as a philanthropist, political activist and pacifist influenced millions worldwide. If Elvis was King, Lennon was his rightful successor – and fittingly, several images in this collection of both classic and unseen photos show him wearing a diamond-studded ‘Elvis’ pin over his heart, in homage to his forefather on the throne of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Renowned celebrity photojournalist Brian Hamill delivers his own insider view of this Beatles icon, through intense, intimate photographic portraits and insightful essays. Whether Lennon is dominating the stage, posing against windswept cityscapes, or relaxing with Yoko Ono, Hamill’s photography takes this quasi-mythical figure from the world of Rock ‘n’ Roll and shows him as the man he really was.

They Must Fall Muhammad Ali and the Men He Fought Photography and Words by Michael Brennan Introduction by Jimmy Breslin • Exclusive never-before-seen photos of Ali and other stars of the ’70s boxing scene • Celebrates one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time, as well as those who went up against him in the ring • This edition also includes a special introductory essay by the late, great Jimmy Breslin 9781788840187 170 illus. 240pp 250 x 250mm Hardback £35.00 / $45.00 Autumn 2020

From award-wining photographer Michael Brennan comes a book dedicated to some of the most powerful and moving figures from the world of boxing. They Must Fall highlights not only Ali, the ‘Greatest of All Time’, but also of the men he fought in the ring. Brennan located former opponents for a special feature that ran over several pages in Sports Illustrated, to discover for himself where these great athletes ended-up. Willi Besmanoff, who fought Ali in 1961, became a youth counsellor. George Logan, who lost in a technical knockout in 1962, became a school truancy officer. When Brennan took photos of Joe Frazier in 1979, he was performing as a cabaret singer. Frazier fought Ali three times, winning the first fight in a famed Madison Square Garden match in 1971 (although he later lost in 1974 and 1975). Buster Mathis, who lost to Ali in 1971, went on to load trucks. George Foreman reinvented himself as a roadside preacher in 1978, after losing to Ali in a knockout in the 8th round in 1974. This unique book flicks through Brennan’s archive with particular focus on the ’70s. It includes several never-before-seen photos. With text by Michael Brennan, including his original 1981 Sports Illustrated essay, this is an eye-opening account of Ali and the men who challenged him.

Oxford The Last Hurrah Dafydd Jones • An important photo book that visually documents student life at Oxford University during the 1980s • The major work of award-winning photographer Dafyyd Jones • A powerful record of the future British establishment 9781788840712 80 illus. 96pp 230 x 190mm Hardback £20.00 / $30.00 Autumn 2020

Oxford University at the start of the eighties, rife with black ties and ballgowns. A change was on its way - best described by a newspaper as ‘the Return of the Bright Young Things’. At this time, Oxford University was synonymous with the wealthy, the powerful and the privileged. Many of the young people in these pictures moved on to have careers in the establishment including Boris Johnson and David Cameron. In these photographs, however, their youth is undeniable: teenagers in full suits celebrate the rise of Thatcher in England and Reagan in America, in between punting on the river, chasing romance and partying through the night. Oxford: The Last Hurrah shows a world that has been written about and dramatised, yet never photographed. Affectionate and critical, it pokes affectionate fun at its subjects while celebrating English eccentricity. From the architectural marvels of the colleges to misty mornings along the river at dawn, this is Oxford at its most beautiful - and the students of the 1980s at their most raw and honest.

Extraordinary Women Images of Courage, Endurance and Defiance Tom Stoddart. Foreword by Angelina Jolie • Photographic assignments from The Balkans, The Sudan, Mozambique, South Africa, India, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Albania, Turkey, China, America, Ireland, and much more • Foreword by Angelina Jolie, introduction by Robin Morgan, Editor in Chief of the Sunday Times Magazine (1991-2009) 9781788840989 Approx 250 Illus, 272pp 268 x 245mm Hardback £35.00 / $45.00 Autumn 2020

Typical warzone coverage has two focuses. The fighters, predominantly young men; and the victims – everyone else. This book calls this familiar narrative into question. Without glamorising or sanitising the harsh realities of our world, it presents the endurance and iron will of women in situations of war, poverty and hardship. Throughout his career, award winning photographer Tom Stoddart has shown us the remarkable resilience of all sorts of people from across the world. With Extraordinary Women, he hones his focus on the female perspective. His photojournalistic approach travels through the recent decades, with images displaying courage and freedom, the working lives of everyday women and the frontline of war. Each photo serves as a testament to the agency and strength of those who are so often portrayed as vulnerable and helpless. Tom Stoddart has built a reputation for compelling work, and this collection is especially remarkable for its uncompromising celebration of humanity.

Andrew Grima The Father of Modern Jewellery William Grant • The first major monograph on Andrew Grima, arguably Britain’s greatest jewellery maestro • A glittering retrospective that encompasses Andrew Grima’s life, career and legacy • Detailed pictures demonstrate Grima’s impeccable artistry as a modernist designer 9781788841061 approx. 450 Illus, 336pp 300 x 240mm Hardback £65.00 / $85.00 Autumn 2020

The father of modern jewellery, the golden engineer, the King of Bling... These are just some of the epithets assigned to Andrew Grima, the British genius who marched in the vanguard of a 1960s London-based movement that created a new vocabulary for jewellery design. Jeweller to the royals and the jet set, to the rule makers and the tastemakers, Grima was a feted celebrity who appeared on talk shows, in Pathé newsreels and in advertisements for Canada Dry. He won The Queen’s Award for Export, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Prize for Elegant Design and a record 11 De Beers Diamonds International Awards (the ‘Oscars’ of the jewellery world). His business empire spanned the globe. Yet his name fell prey to time and changing tastes, and today, with the exception of jewellery snobs, dealers and auction houses, he is all but forgotten. This book illuminates the career of a man who participated in a golden age of British creativity. It contains a dazzling array of never-before-seen sketches, designs and photographs from the Grima archives and includes a sparkling preface from the doyen of jewellery experts, TV celebrity Geoffrey Munn. A must-buy publication for art and jewellery lovers alike.

The Slow Train A Railway Miscellany Peter Ashley Country stations and lonely halts; milk churns, coal yards and platform clocks – these are the fragments of a more leisured age, from a time when the local station was a well-loved institution. Less a clattering, steamy ride into the past than a touchstone for joyous memories, The Slow Train harks back to a slower age.

The Bicycle A Miscellany on Two Wheels Peter Ashley As the world speeds up, as technology takes over, it is worth remembering how we used to live. Squeeze the brakes, sit back and coast downhill with this irreverent collection of cycling memorabilia. Crossing the country from Cumbria to Cambridge, this quaint, pocket-sized manual is a compendium of all things two-wheeled.
