The Folklore House of Academy of Hellenic Paideia and the Hellenic Voices of Long Island will present a program of Greek music showing the way every little and big event in the life cycle has its own musical expression. The Folklore House of Academy of Hellenic Paideia covers a rich traditional repertoire from the island of Crete to Macedonia and from Thrace to the Adriatic sea. This year it has the pleasure to share the results of its rigours research in the ancient form of polyphonic singing of Epirus. In “polyphonika” songs as they call it in Greek language, several (πολλές) melodic voiceslines (φωνές) create an ensemble with distinct hierarchy and concrete unity. The origin of this polyphonic form, is considered to be very old (possibly, even pre-Hellenic). Their melodies are the only ones in Greece that have preserved the pentatonic (five tones) scale without semitones which according to some musicologists, is identified with the Doric way of ancient Greeks, the par excellence Hellenic harmony. The audience will have the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the profound emotional effect of polyphonic singing and enjoy the rich musicality of hellenic heritage. The Hellenic Voices of Long Island of New York have joined us in this special night. The Hellenic Voices of Long Island is a musical ensemble that has been registered as a nonprofit organization with the mission of supporting charity and continuing to distinguish Greek song and Greek Tradition. It was founded by Kostantinos Paliogiannis in the summer of 2010 and consists of five professional instructors and twenty-five amateur singers, whom the love for music, friendship and compassion to help others in need. Distinguished members work every Wednesday night and perform all kinds of Greek music: traditional, folk, rebetiko, island, pontian and others. All members are volunteers who donate their time freely for the noble purpose of the musical ensemble.

ADULT THEATRE “LYSISTRATA”

By Aristofanes JUNE 2

Saturday 8:00 p.m.

JUNE 8

Friday 8:30 p.m. Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater NY 22-51 29th Street, Astoria, NY 11105

The Acting Workshop for Adults “Logos & Praksi” of the Academy of Hellenic Paideia

Workshop lessons include improvisation, acting, orthophony and kinesiology exercises. Also, at the end of the year, a performance by the students of the workshop is presented at the Timarete festival. The lessons are in the Greek language. The workshop is being taught by actor and director Ioanna Katsarou.

Plot

Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing the men to negotiate a peace. Lysistrata’s band of chaste wives is supplemented by a band of older women who have taken the acropolis in order to deny the soldiers access to the funds they need to wage war. When the Athenian men approach the acropolis, they are surprised by the number and determination of the women. After a while, the women grow weak with unsatisfied libido. Lysistrata assures the other women it won’t be long; their husbands are in worse shape than they are. Soon men start showing up, trying everything to persuade their women to release them from their pointedly visible torments, but to no avail. Then a Spartan herald arrives to make a treaty. He, too, is very plainly suffering the priapism rampant among Athenian men. Lysistrata acts as go-between Sparta and Athens. After accusing both sides of dishonorable behavior, she persuades the men to agree to stop fighting.

Aristophanes Aristophanes (Aριστοφάνης, 446 BC – 386 BC), son of Philippus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and are used to define it.[4] Also known as “the Father of Comedy”[5] and “the Prince of Ancient Comedy”, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His innovative and sometimes rough comedy could also hide more sophisticated digs at the political elite and deal with social issues such as cultural change and the role of women in society. Indeed, the plays of Aristophanes are not only a record of Greek theatre but also provide an invaluable insight into many of the political and social aspects of ancient Greece.
