EIT mission is to support the economic and social development of diverse communities by providing relevant, high quality and accessible education and training to individuals, professionals, businesses, community organizations. In the past three years, turmoil in global financial markets, high-level business scandals, and heightened concerns about the environment, have led to widespread concerns about “business as usual”. In the early years of the 21st century, there has been increasing evidence that globalizing industrial systems are generating extreme risks, not only to themselves, but also to wider social and eco-climatic systems. Business as usual may not be a sustainable way for people to generate, exchange and deliver goods and services. In light of this, critics have begun to ask serious questions about the content and ethos of business education and research. Is mainstream business education part of the problem? Should we be teaching the kinds of business models that have led to the current crises? How can we integrate sustainability issues into our educational provision? In entitling the conference “Shake-Up”, the organizers have expressed their wish to encourage contributions that question the fundamentals of what we are doing as business researchers and educators. The conference board would be pleased to receive submissions on any aspect of business and business education, and is particularly keen to receive papers that examine the relationship between business and wider social and environmental systems; that explore the ways businesses can adapt to emerging conditions to become more sustainable; that shed light on how we as business educators can develop more socially aware and environmentally responsible business people. The detailed instructions on submission requirements are on the Web-site.

«Social Causes, Private Lives», Macquarie University and the Australian Sociological Association Conference 2010 http://www.soc.mq.edu.au/tasa-conference TASA is the peak organisation of sociologists throughout Australia. TASA aims to further sociology in Australia, provide a network for sociologists in Australia, further links with other sociological associations, address issues of relevance to Australian sociologists. TASA holds annual conferences and produces a refereed journal, a newsletter, a membership directory, a web site and maintains an email list. It bestows several prestigious awards, including the Jean Martin Award for best PhD, the Best Paper in the Journal of Sociology Award and the occasional Services to Australian Sociology Award. The 2010 TASA conference at Macquarie University is dedicated to the reassertion of sociology as an engaged, critical discipline. Individual responsibility has become the dominant economic and political program, and for many an internalized fact of life. Sociology needs to vigorously reassert its core tasks: to contextualise private lives in the social condition and cultural temper of the times; and so to confidently take a critical position vis-a-vis economic, political and cultural processes in its own social environment and various domains.
