Local Shurwayne Steps Up News His Game For His Fans NEW VIDEOS AND MORE IN STORE FOR FOLLOWERS OF YOU

S

hurwayne Winchester seems to be the perfect ambassadorial candidate not just for soca, but Trinidad and Tobago music overall. His resounding passion for his art and an uncanny appreciation for people in general cannot be overlooked. In fact, Winchester is making it hard for people not to notice his efforts as he is arguably the most active local artiste in social media in the post C2K13 period. His most recent video for the UIM produced “My Music” has been well received and will surely continue to get rotation as it grows. In an exclusive interview with ET&T, Shurwayne divulged that the video’s success was due to the great team he had behind him. “I had a simple idea and I went to the team (Hans Romany, Gabriel Nagee and Klysha Best) who took my idea, added some elements and produced a wonderful video” he said. Assistant Director of the video Klysha Best said that she equally enjoyed the experience of helping to create the treatment and bring the video to life. “He had the idea of walking and singing with the use of a green screen, but we thought we could make it more exciting. So we had him walk the streets of Port of Spain. He started at St. James and ended up on Fredrick Street and Independence Square and interacting with people.” Best said Shurwayne was apprehensive when filming began, but he soon get into it as he was taken away by the music – which is exactly what they wanted the video to suggest. “He has the vibe of someone lost in the music like he is singing in the shower and it is fitting because he did not write the lyrics to that song; he recorded it freestyle off the vibe of the production” Best added. Winchester’s latest track does not fit the Soca mold. In fact, this and Body Calling before it are both crossover tracks that seem genre-less and that is just how Shurwayne likes it. “I was never a soca artiste when I started. People said my voice and melodies were not that of traditional soca. I never wanted to

conform to any genre either. Put me on a reggae, dancehall, R&B riddim… it doesn’t matter. I’ll produce music. At the end of the day, our artform is in our DNA so you will always pick up some dialect or themes that are local” posits Shurwayne. In terms of what direction he’ll be taking next, Shurwayne reveals that he has a multitude of projects in store. “We not stopping.” he says. “I am always in the studio because if I have an idea I don’t get out

I’ll feel trapped. I have to get it out of me or I feel it is blocking another great idea. So I am always laying down new material.” Plus, Winchester has a lot more ways of staying interactive with fans and keeping relevant. His performances and studio sessions have been recorded and will soon be posted on his www.shurwaynewinchester.com website and his youtube channel www. youtube.com/user/swlimited. In

fact, he revealed reality TV type clips of him and the band YOU will also be posted to give fans an inside look at what goes on before the finished product. As a bonus, he will post the lyrics of his songs to help people to sing along – a measure that will surely keep him ahead of the curve. He believes staying close to his fan base via social media is crucial. It is also a means of keeping artistes grounded as they can become lost in celebrity. “We (entertainers) take for granted who we are. Even I took it for granted, but I am reminded when I go to certain places to perform what my role is and who I am. When I go to school tours and children’s shows especially… people are waiting in the blazing hot son with pen and paper to get an autograph and you realize what you mean to them.” he intimated. Shurwayne went on to say that the fans are more important than he is because without them he would have no avenue to exhibit his talents. He acknowledges that fans do look up to him and he is grateful to God that his online presence on facebook has afforded him the chance to help those who may be going through difficult times. “Sometimes I interact with fans and I realize that I just ended up being the one person who helped them after they sought help from their peers and parents. This makes what I do more fulfilling” added the passionate bard. Carnival may be over, but Shurwayne promises there will be lots more in store for 2013. Until his next chess move, Winchester continues to shower love and thanks to the fan base he derives his motivation from. He hopes to continue to work on the relationship with you and YOU.

Cazak Frock & Suspenders For TFW 2013

ay has been dubbed “Fashion Month” in Trinidad and Tobago and Tobago Fashion Weekend (TFW) May 17-19 2013 will go a long way to making this a worthy moniker. TFW comes on the heels of the T&T Fashion Coda which was held on April 25th at the height of the Tobago Jazz Experience. The heightened activity in the fashion sector in Tobago this year has placed the sister isle as the unofficial fashion capital of the republic for the moment. That is something the executive at Designers United Stores will be extremely proud about. They are the people who are spearheading TFW. They officially launched their event at La Cantina Restaurant on Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain, Trinidad in mid April and now they are moving forward as they hope to put on a great show for the many fashion enthusiasts in this celebra-

tion of regional talent. At the launch, the specially invited guests got a glimpse of some designs from a host of talented designers who will be contributing to the event. Zadd & Eastman, Dexter Jennings, Heather Jones, Claudia Pegus, Daww Creations, Shaun Griffith-Perez, Wadada Movement, The Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design/

UTT, Yesa Designs and Khrystal Fashions all offered previews amid performances by Collin Duranty, Akilah Riley and Ziggy Ranking. The TFW facebook page has been abuzz with updates on the designers and models for the upcoming showcase themed “Cazak, Frock & Suspenders.” A representative from TFW shared the meaning behind the theme. “If you’ve

followed the progression of TFW, you will see that we tried to zone in on our culture. Cazak is the enclosure at the front of one’s pants. Suspenders are a fixture in men’s clothing and the frock is an embellished dressed. We are using terms native to us to reflect the island.” ET&T was also promised that this year will see some changes as the Tobago Fashion Weekend has expended in its third year. “We have increased our designer appeal and we have more regional and international designers this year. New York based Romero Bryan will be there. We also have designers coming in from the Netherlands and as far as New Delhi” said the rep. The overall profile of the event is bigger. To deal with all the attention, a special toll free call centre has been developed to entertain questions about the event. The 211 initiative is a welcome networking model for upcoming events that plan to go worldwide.

Kaj Designs Prepares For The International Launch Of Its Latest Resort Collection, “Tribu Sauvage” Tobago’s Premier Fashion House Poised To Grow Its Export Potential

S

ince the 2010 launch of Kaj Designs’ resort line, Tobago’s premier fashion house has worked steadfastly to position itself as a global leader in Caribbean fashion. Led by the dynamic partnership of President/Creative Director, Kevin Ayoung-Julien, and CEO/Director, Liza Miller, this year the brand is focused on growing its export potential and generating international sales. The brand’s objective to capture international markets began with the strategic introduction of its more conservative and lighter feeling Kaj Resort line in June 2010. With a clear objective to establish the Kaj brand in international markets, the label launched its premiere resort collection, Shore Culture, at the 2010 Caribbean Fashionweek (CFW) in Kingston, Jamaica. In June 2011, Kaj marked an historic 2

milestone with its launch in the French Caribbean with the placement of the Kaj Resort line at Guadeloupe’s exclusive Caribbean boutique, KOD. This move established KOD as the first and sole retailer of the Kaj brand in the region. In February 2012, Kaj received one of its highest honours as it was selected to represent the Caribbean in an initiative of the Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA) entitled Caribbean Collections. This initiative sought to create opportunities for access to European markets via participation in the inaugural International Fashion Showcase at London Fashion Week (LFW) Autumn/Winter (A/W) 2012. In the label’s LFW debut, Shore Culture was favoured as it featured at an exhibition held at The Charing Cross Hotel while select pieces featured at a private

showing at the Corinthia Hotel. The Shore Culture collection made its final appearance on the runway at the Ocean Style FashionShowcase during the 2012 Audi Celebrity Golf Invitational in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The brand closed 2012 with the stellar achievement of copping the Tobago House of Assembly’s (THA’s) Business Development Unit’s (BDU’s) Most Promising Entrepreneur award at Tobago’s 2012 Business Awards in October. The unique synergy between Ayoung-Julien’s ingenious creativity and Miller’s crisp entrepreneurial and marketing proficiency, specifically in the field of the creative industries, has poised Kaj Designs to become the leader in Caribbean fashion internationally. The brand recently gained memberships in the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce and

the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) while registering with the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) with a view to strengthening export readiness, deepening corporate networks and ensuring impeccable standards in garment construction. As Kaj Designs looks to the future with the impending launch of the new Kaj Resort 13/14 collection, Tribu Sauvage, the young CEO shared, “I have taken an holistic approach in managing and marketing the Kaj brand which began with developing a sound business plan. It has taken several years of consistent research and planning to get us to this point. Fashion is not just about creating beautiful clothing. To ensure success, there must be a real strategy that informs all aspects of one’s operations.”

The Hideout To Turn Into A Gamers Paradise

arious companies are always on the lookout for innovative ways of marketing and promotion of their brands. Sometimes, companies achieve this with the added bonus of doing something fun and exciting their customers can actually benefit from. Well-known urban apparel boutique the Hideout has been aligned with some of the hottest celebrities and events in entertainment from early on – a practice which seems to be working for them. Now, the Long Circular based store has garnered the interest of their customers by leaning on the popularity of virtual reality game FIFA 13 as they host a tournament at the store. The tournament takes place on Sunday 5th May from 12pm till a winner is decided. This marketing tool seems to be a popular one. It is the second time the Hideout is embarking on such a project with the 4

first being a resounding success. Store and event representative Sebastian Gibert shared that the tournament was conceptualized as a way to promote the store but turned out to be bigger than he

expected. “The first tournament we hosted had about 60 participants. This one should be even bigger” said Gibert. “There are videos of the first event on our facebook

page which can give you an idea of the vibe” he added. This time around the tournament will be played on three strategically placed screens throughout the venue. The prize money is also nothing to shrug at. The first prize is $3000 worth of cash and store items for playing the game you love. The second place finalist earns $1000 in store credit. Most of all, they will have the benefit of bragging rights. The rules are simple. You play until you lose. Once you lose, you are knocked out. The two players with the longest winning streaks meet in the final. If you miss a match, your will be considered forfeited. Registration is $100 per participant. The store owners have tapped into an undying, ever-growing part of the entertainment landscape. With Champions League fever in the air, they seem to be doing it at just the right time.

HOT

SEAT

Trini Jacobs Destra happened several years ago.

ET&T: If you could give an upcoming female artiste one piece of advice, what would it be? Trini: Persistence and consistence is the key.

E

ver effervescent artiste, Caryl ‘Trini’ Jacobs is a former frontline vocalist for Roy Cape and the All Stars who has collaborated with Machel Montano, Glen Washington, and Beenie Man among others. She is the daughter of Carl and Carol Jacobs which makes it seem like she was destined for soca stardom. However, she is much more than a soca star. The young singer and entrepreneur is also a mother and style savvy sex-symbol. ET&T chops it up with her on the Hot Seat.

ET&T: Who has the best/ worst personality in the biz? Trini: I don’t know too many people, but J.W. has a great personality. He is a lovely person. I haven’t met too many others who have made that much of an impression on me.

ET&T: How is motherhood going for you? Trini: It is very fulfilling. Just getting that love from my son and giving back that unconditional love to him is just amazing. It helps me to achieve a nice balance in my life. ET&T: What’s the hardest thing about motherhood? Trini: Wow. In the beginning it was the lack of sleep and just getting accustomed to the whole idea of motherhood. I was so unsure about a lot of stuff. I would say the fear was the most difficult thing... the fear and uncertainty of dealing with a changing baby. ET&T: You’ve done several collaborations with some big names before, but your name is not yet mentioned in the “Queen of Soca” debates. What do you have to accomplish? Trini: Most of those collaborations came through the foreign label I was with at the time. It was mostly a lot of reggae artistes. I don’t stick to any one genre. From early on until now I always chose what I wanted to do with my music so it was never one type of sound. Even though my parents are who they are I still had to get my feet wet in the soca industry and pay my dues. In fact, I never had anyone manage my soca career until now,

ET&T: Sexiest male soca star? Trini: Kees… Kees…Kees. I can’t spell his last name, but his first name is all I need. He is really sexy. so I’m really excited to see where this can go.

ET&T: What are your plans for 2014? Trini: The sky is the limit for me. I’m happy to have a manger to direct my soca career and I’m just working with a lot of different people in terms of putting together a package. I’m in the studio a lot, working with Millbeatz and more. ET&T: What’s the worst thing that ever happened to you in the industry? Trini: I would say the worst thing was also the best thing. It was performing at Soca Monarch with Beenie Man. Roy Cape didn’t know the music for the song and Beenie didn’t remember the lyrics. I was just so excited about everything that I was running around the stage screaming (she screams for effect), not really performing as I should. So it was the worst thing, but just being a part of that experience was also the best thing that ever happened. ET&T: Are you religious? Trini: I’m spiritual. I don’t claim

12 ET&T • APRIL, 2013 • www.etntweekly.com

any particular religion. I believe God is in each of us and different religions refer to him by different names, but he is universal. It’s all about how you pray and relate to him.

ET&T: Describe your scariest groupie experience. Trini: A male fan came up to me after a show to shake my hand and say how much he loved me. While we were talking a girl (the fan’s girlfriend) storms up to us and points and says to me “I don’t like you. My boyfriend has a poster of you up in his bedroom and we would not take it down for anything.” She was just so angry and I did not know what to say. That was a bit frightening. I told my mom about it and she said that happened to her a few times as well. (Lol). ET&T: What’s the biggest bacchanal you’ve ever witnessed since your involvement in the soca arena? Trini: It would have to be when the showdown with Saucy and

ET&T: Outside of Carnival what are you up to? Trini: I’m recording a lot of R&B stuff. I have some other projects lined up that I’ll divulge when the time gets sooner. I spend a lot of time with family; I exercise a lot and do yoga. On the weekends I do socialize a little bit. ET&T: What is your aforementioned fitness regime like? Trini: I do a program called Insanity. I used to do P90X, but the Insanity is so much more challenging. I can eat my Guinness ice cream and my KFC because I know that Sean T is going to help me burn it off. ET&T: What else is Trini Jacobs up to? Trini: I also recently opened a business with my father called “SEXY BOO Beauty Supply” at #2 Madras Street St. James. That’s what I do during the day. Oh! I’m also taking piano lessons. I think it will really help me with my music and me having a hand in production. I just want to maximize what I can do now while I’m young.

Home Beauty Recipes F

ollowing up on a good beauty regime can be quite costly. Maintaining the desired look may also be a lot of hassle because of the shopping that needs to be done to acquire all the necessary products. There is an alternative to this though. One can try homemade beauty recipes using the finest natural products from around the house. Here are some ideas to get you on your way.

Preheat oven on lowest setting. Finely grate the ginger just enough so that you have about an 1/8 teaspoon of ginger "juice." To obtain the juice, squeeze the freshly grated ginger over a small bowl. Place the ingredients (including the ginger) in a glass container and heat just until the cocoa butter is melted and the oils are blended. Pour into a clean, dry container and store in a cool dry place. You can add a few drops of orange or other essential oil for a nice twist.

Invigorating Coffee Scrub • 3 T Coffee grounds (organiccaffeinated) • 1 T Salt (optional) To Make: Brew a fresh pot of coffee. Enjoy a cup, if you like. Put grounds (and salt) in a small bowl. Use grounds within 20 minutes of brewing before oxidation occurs. To Use: Scrub mixture over entire body while in the shower. Rinse. Tone. Moisturize.

CucumberHoney Toner • medium Cucumber, peeled and cut up into pieces • 2 tsp. Honey Puree cucumber in a blender. Line a sieve with cheesecloth and set the sieve over a glass bowl or measuring cup. Pour the cucumber puree through the sieve and let it stand for 15 minutes for the juices to drip into the bowl. Pour the clear juice into a clean bottle and add honey. To use shake the bottle and saturate a cotton pad with the lotion. Sweep over face, neck and chest morning and night, and let it air dry (about 3 to 4 minutes). Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Makes about 1/2 cup.

Cucumber Hair Drench If you swim in a chlorinated pool for exercise on a regular basis, the same damage you've noticed happening to your skin and bathing suit, is happening to your hair, as well. Try this treatment at home to keep chlorine damage at a minimum.

The EEEmpire team is known for having free beach events Iacross the country. This time they opted for a more exotic location roughly 8 minutes from the popular Maracas Bay. The lime was still filled with vibes and endless eye candy. Make ET&T miss it… we dare yuh!

The ReaL Deal

avid Rodigan himself endorsed it, so TITAN must D have been on to something with his big sound clash event “The Real Deal.” It was a chance to experience

the golden age of dancehall again as Bass Odyssey and Killamanjaro duked it out one dubplate after the other in Chaguaramas. April 14th was the date for the event which saw several other celebrity DJs come out to support the headline sounds. ET&T was there for the action. Peep the full gallery on our facebook page.

FP In The Streets

he Fashion Police aren’t all about hitting up clubs and T boatrides while we look for miscre-

ants. We hit the road as hard as the traffic branch in our quest to rid Trinidad and Tobago of fashion folly. We braved the extreme heat in the streets to catch these people while we were on the beat. Home girl is a more than a little off. She tied her sneakers like a small goal footballer and rolled up her jeans to show it off. With that in mind it is evident she was trying to make a fashion statement. She did. It says “I Am Nuts.” Just think, she walking through Port-of-Spain like that.

Over the years, we have seen our share of unflattering outfits and this is yet another to add to the list. An outfit should compliment one’s shape by highlighting the positives and cloaking the negatives. Her outfit does neither. In fact, it does quite the opposite. Plus, those cuts in her pants…not sexy!

Jeggings are not for everybody (as evidenced by this specimen). Her tight fitting clothing and mismatched bag are unflattering at best. There was also a hint of visible panty lines, but we won’t encourage you to hurt your eyes.

Movies In May A

s we await Hollywood’s slew of big budget summer blockbusters, we can still get our movie night on in the interim with some lesser marketed, but equally enthralling films. The month of May is hardly associated with spectacular releases, but one or two movies always surprise you. Aftershock Eli Roth stars in this movie based in Chile about a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub when a massive earthquake hits. They quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare.

The Fast and Furious 6 Dwayne Johnson didn't have to save or reignite this franchise (which is becoming his specialty); he was brought in to make the enduring and morally ambiguous adventures of Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) even more appealing to worldwide audiences. And that certainly worked, as Fast & Furious 5's allworld box-office tally can attest. Elsewhere, we are anticipating the soap opera-like narrative device that will bring Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) back into the story.

Around." With each album exceeding sales of seven million copies worldwide, he was established as one of the most commercially successful singers. He turned that success into movie opportunities landing important roles in films such as “Alpha Dog” (2006), The Social Network (2010), “Friends With Benefits” (2011), “Bad Teacher” (2011), “In Time” (2011) and “Trouble with the Curve” (2012). He is currently revisiting his musical passion with his latest album The 20/20 Experience which features the popular “Suit and Tie.” Timberlake also recently married on again-off again girlfriend Jessica Biel.
