Y

our home may not really be in need of a complete makeover, but you still feel as though some change is needed. A few minor adjustments can make a huge difference to any interior. Try these on for size. Accessorize the Cabinets Replacing cabinet hardware is an inexpensive and easy update. Find knobs and pulls that are the same size as the existing ones so you don't have to re-drill the cabinets. If your cabinets need more than new hardware, paint them. It can be a time-consuming project, but if done right; your kitchen will look brand new and add value to your home. Change the Faucets Just as with the cabinets, a little accessorizing goes a long way. A new fixture in the kitchen or bathroom can add that extra shine you're looking for. New kitchen faucets have a lot more functionality, so the upgrade can be more than just aesthetic. The great thing is, these can be done as a DIY project, because they aren’t difficult to change. Fix Squeaky Door Hinges Spray a little WD-40 onto the hinges, moving the door back and forth to work in the lubricant. Or try rubbing the hinges with petroleum jelly. If these tricks don’t work, lift the hinge pins about halfway and lubricate them with three-in-one oil, using a rag to catch drips. Not only

Quick Interior Fixes will your hinges move smoother and make less noise, but you will prevent them from rusting as well. Remove Porcelain Stains Toilets, tubs and sinks can really affect the overall look of your abode if they aren’t clean. Everything looks better clean (except maybe a blue devil). Combine equal amounts of cream of tartar and baking soda with enough lemon juice to make a paste. Rub the mixture into the stain with your fingers, a soft cloth or soft brush. Let sit for a half hour, then rinse well with water. Good as new. Poof up Cushions If your cushions and throw pillows are flat, here is a quick fix for you. Put them outside in the sun for a few hours, flipping them halfway through. (Be careful leaving them out too long may fade the fabric.) The sun will help evaporate the moisture

that gets into the filling over time, and the cushions should plump up nicely. Dress Your Door Block drafts and highlight the entry with a curtain on the inw w w . a m g tt. c o m

side of the front door. This is especially effective if your door’s texture, colour or design looks great from outside, but doesn’t really match the interior. Plus, the right curtain can give a room a luxurious feel.

Home Colour Mistakes To Avoid

Y

ou cannot Adobe Photoshop your home, so it is important to make sure that the colours you put on it are the right ones. This article helps you to identify several colour mistakes that can ruin the finished product of your home dĂŠcor. Failing to test first This seems obvious, but all of us need to be reminded never to get too sure that the color we have specified is correct. If you choose not to go through what it takes to test the color accurately, you need to know that a re-paint might be necessary in the end. You can't predict whether you'll actually like the color once you see it up and lighting can take what seems like the safest color and turn it into something that makes you want to cry. Keep in mind, testing a color in an empty room will not be that useful. Have an idea of which furniture/ fabrics are going into the room first. Choosing color without in2

spiration will just make it harder for you to decorate. Going Overboard Don’t get too tricky and overuse colour. You may have seen people adding accent walls where one wouldn't be appropriate. Simple is quite often better. This goes for a kitchen backsplash as well. Paint is not the only thing that adds colour to a space. In terms of kitchens or entrys, continue with the same hardwood flooring, as the days of defining each room with different flooring are over. Trying to match colours No matter how hard you try, you will never be able to "match" a color exactly from one surface to another. When you have a piece of fabric and want to find a carpet to match the exact color, you will find it an impossible task. Instead, look for colors that complement your fabric or a similar color that is a couple shades lighter or darker.

Not taking expert advice A good interior decorator will stand firm with his/her color recommendations and compare and explain to clients why it is the right choice. They know what they are doing. After all, that is why you requested their help. However, external influences such as television or opinionated neighbours tend to creep into your psyche and affect your dialogue with the decorator. Leave it to them. They can understand undertones and specify the right color. Plus they know that fixed and/or furnished elements often trump colors you might currently be in love with. Being Too Cautious This is especially true of exteriors. Not being adventurous enough with color can truly zap the spice out of your home. We don't need any more brown homes. This is the Caribbean. Our designs should be as zesty as the people who inhabit the archipelago. If you paint your

house the current trendy neutral as much as you love it now, you'll likely be bored with it as soon as the trend changes again. Go for lots of heritage mid-toned greys for exteriors, but note that a dark grey or charcoal house will eventually look just as dated as a brown house currently does. Ignoring the lighting Lighting plays a huge part in your interior design. The exact same lighting design can enhance one space, while ruining another. The types and amount of lighting you need varies from one room to another. For example, one room might call for plenty of cool, bright, general lighting throughout the entire space, while another would benefit from softer, layered lighting with warm undertones. Your paint job will last longer than the life-span of a trend (10 years). Be sure to choose carefully and consider the right color!

10 Plants That Keep Your Air Clean

P

lants can be a great addition to any room. But did you know they can actually help purify the air you are breathing? The list below shows a compilation of house plants that can do more than beautify your homes.

and the water and light must be right. Bamboo Palm - lives in shady surroundings and acts as a natural air purifier. It filters out trichloroethylene, benzene and even some traces of formaldehyde.

Aloe Vera – This multi-functional plant is known for removing formaldehyde and benzene from the air. These by-products usually come from cleaners, glue, plastics, detergent and paints. Gerber Daisy - Like aloe vera, this also removes benzene from the air, as well as carbon dioxide and trichloroethylene (this can come from dry cleaning). Golden Pothos - Also like aloe vera, it removes formaldehyde. A good place to put this plant would be a garage provided that it receives sufficient light. 4

Chrysanthemum - Other than adding aesthetic value to your home or office, this beautiful flower can also remove benzene from the air.

formaldehyde and benzene and is known to emit high levels of oxygen. It is a low maintenance plant as even in low lighting it can produce berries and bloom.

Boston Fern - It is a natural air purifier and removes formaldehyde.

Weeping Fig -is perfect for those with carpets and rugs as this plant is known for filtering out pollutants that generally accompany carpets. However it is a high maintenance plant

Chinese Evergreen- removes a variety of air pollutants such as

Peace Lilly - like the Bamboo Palm, it requires a shady area to survive and lots of watering. However, it purifies the air from trichloroethylene, benzene, formaldehyde and some traces of toluene (solvent used in adhesive films, floor polishes and automotive chemicals) and xylene (a solvent used in rubber and leather). Spider plant - very little maintenance is needed for this plant to survive. It cleanses the air from benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene.

Beneficial Garden “Pests” You’ll Want To Leave Alone

might be harmful to the health of the plants you’re working so hard to cultivate and nurture. The fact that there is an almost limitless supply of bugs that can damage your plants means that for many people who are just starting a garden you’re on high alert. While quite a few insects do represent a danger, there are actually several that should be left alone as they can actually vastly improve the health and beauty of your garden and its plants.

W

hen you’re a beginner spending time in your garden, there are often moments where you’ll spot a stray bug and wonder if it

BEES This one is almost a no-brainer, especially when it comes to certain species such as bumble bees. These bugs are probably one of the most beneficial insects to a garden, particularly one with

any sorts of flowers because of the vital role they play in pollination.

PRAYING MANTIS These interesting stick-like insects are among the best at what can be called organic pest control. They are skilful predators, and will feast on any number of harmful pests that do cause damage such as aphids, caterpillars and flies without causing any harm whatsoever to your plants. They have even been known in rare cases to prey on small rodents if you can imagine it. LADYBUGS It seems most gardeners know of the benefits of having some ladybugs in amongst their flowers, and it’s with good reason

that these insects have cultivated such a good reputation. A Ladybug’s diet consists mainly of tiny bugs known as aphids that voraciously devour the leaves and stems of your plants. Having some ladybugs in your garden will reduce the problem by many orders of magnitude, and since they themselves cause no harm to plants will be a completely beneficial relationship.

Just by learning about some of the bugs that help you along the way, you’ll be a much happier and smarter gardener, and your plants will definitely show all the hard work these little helpers have put into keeping your flower beds free of annoying and damaging pests.

The Best Way To Store Cement

W

hen building your home you may purchase a lot of materials in bulk to safeguard against running low on stock. In fact, many contractors advise that you purchase extra stock in the event that you need it. After construction however, you may have left-over materials and may need to house the leftover materials for use at a later date. Cement is one such item that can be left for a period of time without deteriorating but proper storage procedure must be followed.

doors and small openings.

3

Store bags at least 15 stacks high, placing one lengthways and the other sideways to prevent toppling. Each stack of 15 or less should be placed at least 3 metres away from the others.

4

Cement at the bottom of the pile may cake because of the weight of the bags on top of them. If this occurs, simply roll the bag over and the cement will return to its natural form.

1

Store cement in a waterproof warehouse or container. Because it is finely grounded, it can absorb water and moisture from the air. If bags are to be stored for long periods of time, place a polythene sheet over them to prevent moisture from getting into bags.

6

5 2

Store stacks close together but away from walls and open areas. There

needs to be little to no air circulation between the stacks of cement. Keep away from wooden

When choosing bags for use, use the FIFO (First In, First Out) method of inventory which means that the first batch of cement stocked would be the first one to be used. To effectively use this system, write the date and time the packages were stored and store them in separate stacks as they arrive.

Behavioural Tips To Boost Your Business Meetings

B

usiness meeting etiquette is as important as the actual theme of the meeting itself. The growth and development of companies can be directly linked to the success of the business meetings which take place on all levels – whether internally or externally. It is important for one to understand one’s role in such meetings and do what is necessary to project the right image where business meetings are concerned. Agenda The chairperson of the meeting should circulate a meeting agenda to each participant at least one week in advance. Participants should call the chairperson to express any concerns about the agenda at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. The chairperson and concerned participant will then have time to determine if changes need to be made. The agenda should also mention the meeting's start and ending times as well. If you are the one receiving the agenda, be sure to review the meeting agenda before you

8

arrive and make sure you have accurate information to share. Also pay attention to the details shared by others. You must have a clear understanding of the purpose of the meeting before you walk in. R.S.V.P. When asked via phone, e-mail, or electronic calendar to attend a business meeting, be sure to reply if a reply is requested. Some meetings are structured and spaces secured on the basis of expected attendance. Keep Your Tech In Check Turn off your cell phone prior to the start of the meeting. If you are expecting an urgent call, then set your phone to vibrate and excuse yourself from the meeting if the call comes in. Unless laptop computers have been approved for the meeting, turn yours off and lower the screen so that you do not obstruct anyone's view. Dress the Part Wear business or business casual

ABSTRACT HOME FEBRUARY 2017 w w w . a mg t t .c o m

attire to meetings. Conservative wear should fit the business theme. Preferably, dark or basic colors – blouse with a skirt or slacks for women, a suit and tie for men, or business casual attire. The proper dress should be pressed and tastefully done. People who appear to be unkempt, tired or sluggish are considered unprepared. Sometimes locations have a strict dress code upon arrival, so find out before attending the event. Be Engaging If you are the presenter make sure to stay on topic and engage your audience. No one likes a boring speaker or to listen to irrelevant information. Keep it short and direct, but stay calm and relax. Take a couple of deep breaths before starting or listen to a song that inspires you. Enthusiasm is contagious, and so too is boredom. Have a Steady Disposition Stay calm. Don't fidget, tap your pen, play with your fingers, read materials not concerning the

meeting or any other act that might distract other attendees. Regardless of how heated the meeting may become, remain calm at all times. Organize Your Thoughts The moment you start to ramble, you've lost your audience's attention. Have an outline of what you want to talk about and stick to it. Having your meeting points planned out will help you maintain a professional and organized atmosphere. This will also help keep the meeting short. However, don't feel like you need to fill every second with your talking. Welcome the group discussions or question and answer sessions. Stick Around Till The End It is important to attend the entire meeting. Leave only when the meeting is adjourned. Leaving before the end of the meeting – unless absolutely necessary and unless you have prior permission—can be disruptive to other attendees and inconsiderate of the speaker.

KITCHEN

Overrated And Useless Kitchen Appliances

I

t seems like some new appliance that promises the world of ease in the kitchen comes out every day. That doesn’t mean you should go out and purchase it. Some of these appliances are pretty darn useless if you ask me. I’ll list some of them and show you why. Deep Fryer Look, fatso: Enough of the food we eat out in the world on a daily basis is deep-fried as it is. If you're going through the trouble to cook at home, then take that extra step and cook healthy food for your family. What in God's name would you possibly need to deep-fry at home? Use a cast iron skillet with some oil in it if you need to fry something up. Besides, who wants a giant vat of used oil sitting on their countertop, slowly congealing and making your house smell like a McDonald's? Sigh! Electric Can Opener If you use one of these you are probably very lazy. Just because 16

ances you will find in a house. What separates it from other kettles? For one thing… it’s electric. That’s it. An electric kettle is plugged in so that it can heat up water. That's it. The rest of the time it takes up space on your counter. If you want to make a cup of tea, heat the water in the microwave or in a pan on the stove, not in a special kettle.

they make these doesn't mean you need to buy one. These amount to a general waste of electricity and not to mention counter space. A little elbow grease wouldn’t hurt. Unless you have arthritis or some other debilitating, degenerative condition that makes opening a can difficult for you, take five seconds of your time to open it yourself with a regular can opener. Electric kettle The electric kettle is one of the most common, yet one of the most overrated electric appli-

Rotisserie Unless you are running a restaurant you don't need a rotisserie anything in your house. We know rotisserie chicken is a healthier option than most other options, but how much rotisserie are you going to make anyway? These devices are costly and senseless to own especially if you can grill meats for equally healthy options. In our opinion, unless you're serving up rotisserie chicken every night, spend your money elsewhere. Dishwashers If you own a restaurant, by all means get one of these. That is

unless you have a small army of elves in the kitchen waiting to wash up after your customers. In the home however, we do advise that you do your dishwashing manually. For one, you save on energy and water consumption once done right. Also, it saves time. Dishwashers are useless, because you basically have to prewash the dishes before assembling them into dishwasher trays. It‘s a lot of work that could be avoided. Bread Maker So you bought a nice, shiny bread maker. Woohoo!! Now you can bake bread all day long just like Sam Cooke would hammer (if he had a hammer of course). These machines are not that useful to most people. If you are a regular bread maker, it may be for you, but even many regular bakers don’t touch their bread makers. Follow the right recipe and you can use your conventional oven with stellar results. That means you can save countertop space.

Sumptuous Snacks

arnival time is a get up and go kind of time. That means there is less time to prepare lengthy meals and even less time to sit and dine. It is the perfect occasion to get your hands on some snacks. Here are some great options.

PEANUT BUTTER SNACK BARS Ingredients Parchment paper Cooking spray 3/4 cup chopped dark chocolate 2 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup wheat germ 1/4 cup flax seeds 1 cup crispy rice cereal 1 cup cornflake crumbs 3/4 cup chopped almonds 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons agave nectar 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions Line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. Spread chocolate evenly over prepared baking dish. Toast oats, wheat germ, and flax seed in a non-stick skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently until oats are lightly golden and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Transfer oat mixture to a large bowl and stir in crispy rice cereal, cornflake crumbs, almonds, and salt. Heat honey, peanut butter, brown sugar, agave nectar, canola oil, and cinnamon in a saucepan 18

over medium heat. Cook and stir until mixture begins to bubble, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour peanut butter mixture over cereal mixture; gently stir until well mixed. Spread peanut butter-cereal mixture into the baking dish. Place another sheet of parchment over the mixture and firmly press into the dish until even. Allow to completely cool before removing from baking dish and slicing.

In a small saucepan, melt butter with garlic and lemon juice. Pour 1/4 cup butter mixture in a small bowl, and brush onto prawns. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over prawns. Place broiler pan on top rack, and broil prawns for 4 to 5 minutes, or until done. Serve with remaining butter mixture for dipping.

Considerations For An Outdoor Wedding

veryone thinks of rain when considering the negative aspects of an outdoor wedding. However, there are a lot more things to consider when planning an outdoor wedding. Plan for Wind: There are many outdoor celebrations that suffered from windy conditions. Try to avoid very light fabrics in the wedding dress and that of the bridal party. You don’t want your wedding to be remembered for a wardrobe malfunction… you want it to be remembered as perfect. Also, make sure to tell your hair stylist that it is an outdoor wedding so the right hairstyle can be chosen. Have a Backup Plan: What will you do if it rains? The ideal outdoor wedding location has an indoor location waiting 20

weighted sides. Decorate Wisely: Complement your decorations with the beauty of nature; rather than distract from it. Over decorating for an outdoor wedding isn’t necessary—especially when you have a stunning natural backdrop. Think in terms of simple touches like an arch or trellis to focus the ceremony and frame the time you exchange vows.

just in case. Many brides and grooms opt to have their ceremony outside and reception inside. In a pinch, the tables can be scooted to the back of the room during the ceremony. A tent is another option, but

ABSTRACT HOME FEBRUARY 2017 w w w . a mg t t .c o m

only for light to moderate rain storms. A heavy rain will soak the ground underneath, leaving guests with soggy and muddy shoes. Make sure any tent you rent is sturdy so it won't flip over, and that it has thick and

Make Your Guests Comfortable: If you are in a humid area or an area that has an infestation of mosquitoes, sand gnats, etc., see if your location can be sprayed or bring in fans to disperse them. These tiny wedding crashers can and will ruin the experience at your wedding, so don’t take this lightly! Also, be sure to keep bottles of cold water handy to combat the tropical sun.

10 New School Ways To Discipline Kids

R

unny nose, wet eyes and bawling as if their lungs would jump out, are what often accompany a child after getting hit with a belt. Many parents think that this is the only way that they can discipline a child. However it is not always the best way. Children who are often disciplined with a belt tend to be more violent and rebellious. Other ways to discipline children should be looked at and considered. For one thing the use of the belt should be stopped. Remember you are the first person that a child looks up to as an example and role model. They will begin to think that things can be fixed by using violence. The methods used by most parents are the same methods that their parents would have used to discipline them as a child. Think about the methods used to discipline you as a child and how they made you feel. Do you think that it is right to use the same methods on your own children? Most parents will answer no to this question, especially if they were disciplined with the use of a belt. Too often the extent to which a child is disciplined depends on the mood of the parent. Be careful not to let stress from the activities of your day interfere with the way you handle your children. If at the moment you are stressed out, take the time to sit and calm yourself. Doing this will allow you to better deal with the situation and deliver the appropriate method of discipline. Discipline should not leave scars on your child. If this is happening it

22

is not discipline it is abuse. Here are ten ways to discipline your children without using the belt.

1

Grounding a child is one of the most used methods of discipline without the belt. The child has certain privileges taken away. This includes the use of the phone, television, internet and other things that your child may like to do. Children respond to this method well because they do not like their freedom to be taken away from them.

2

For smaller kids you can use the time out option. The child should be placed in an area where they are not distracted and where there is nothing to amuse them. All toys must also be taken away. The child is given time to think about what was done to cause you, the parent, to discipline them. The best place to put the child is facing a wall.

3

No child likes to do extra chores, so this is an excellent way to discipline them. Let them do something that they don’t like to do. If they don’t like cleaning their room let them clean it. This also gives you an opportunity to talk to your child. You can find out what is bothering them and why they behave the way they do.

4

Most children want to know how, when and why they can’t do something. When a child needs to be disciplined teach them why what they are doing is wrong. Talking is not only a good way to communicate with your child. It can also

ABSTRACT HOME FEBRUARY 2017 w w w . a mg t t .c o m

be used to discipline them.

5

Create a schedule with your kids and stick to it. Being consistent in what you do helps a child to be disciplined. The less free time a child has the less likely that child will get into trouble. Your child must know that there is a time to play, learn and a time to rest. Spend some time each day with your kids and talk to them and you would definitely see the difference.

6

Sometimes the best way to understand what we are doing is to see the effect that it has on others. If there are sibling fights show them how they hurt each other. Let them say how they feel about fighting each other. Once they understand how their behavior affects others they will be more considerate. Understanding how they can sometimes hurt people is discipline enough for them.

7

Children like rewards and trinkets so promise them that if they behave they would get a surprise. This is a friendly way to discipline your child and also a great way to reward them when they do well. The thought of a surprise will deter then from doing something that could cause you to discipline. After a while the surprises will no longer be needed because the child would have trained themselves to behave.

8

You can also discipline a child by doing the opposite to grounding. You can take

them out shopping. The trick here is to buy things for yourself only. Explain to the child that if they behave themselves next time you would buy something special for them. For a child, going shopping and not getting anything could be very sad.

9

Set rules for the child to follow. Children learn by example so be the best example for your child. Have a set of rules that you expect the child to follow placed in a location that the child can see. Rules remind us of what should be done and what should not be. A constant reminder often deters us from making a mistake.

10

If you want your infant to learn how to use a potty you have to train him. Take the time out to sit and read to him when he is on his training potty. If he dirties his pants while playing, clean him and let him sit on his potty for a few minutes. He will soon know when to go and use the potty for himself. Discipline isn’t just about punishing children when they do wrong. It deals with teaching them good behavior and also the difference between right and wrong. It has a lot to do with establishing order in a household. Yes we all know that parenting is hard and there are times when the easiest thing to do is pick up a belt. Think before you do that though, you might just regret it after the damage had already been done.

skin with juicing.” Elaine Wilkes is also a Certified Practitioner of Metabolic Typing, which means she matches people’s nutrition to their metabolism, taking into account their genetics, personality, blood type, etc. She recommends creating a juicy cocktail for a vivacious skin tone and healthier complexion, and to help anyone achieve glowing skin. “Combine fresh green vegetable juices such as cucumber, celery, kale, parsley, spinach, and a little bit of apple for a delicious taste, into a juicer,” she instructs. Wilkes also suggests adding lemon and ginger for a yummy zing. “Soon, you will notice a glow to your new, plumped-up, radiant skin,” she details. “For more added benefits, drink half your weight in ounces of water each day. Beautiful skin is about what is going on inside your body. Nourish your inside with these tasty, healthy juices and your skin cannot help but look terrific. Oh, and you'll feel great, too.” For healthy skin that looks and feels great, make a conscious effort to improve your diet. Also take the time to practice a regular cleansing routine, and engage in a realistic exercise program. These commitments to yourself will give your body and skin the boost they’ve needed to get on and stay on the right track.

Fashion Fixes To Mend Your Mood

I

f you are feeling drab, a quick fashion fix is one way to get you into ‘Fab’ mode. Don’t be down; just try these quick tips to turn your mood around. Colour is a great way to enhance a person’s mood. Stay away from dark colours such as black and grey. Try going for the blues and warm cinnamon brown tones. These brighter colours help uplift the mood and take away from the fact that you may be a bit down. Darker colours tend to make you look a bit more depressed than you really are. So the best thing to do would be to stay away from them. If you must wear a dark outfit to work add some colour with your shoes. This lightens up the overall mood of your look. If you wear a standard uniform to work try perking it up with a broach or a scarf. These fashion accessories do a lot to improve the image of clothing. There are many different styles and colours available that you can chose from with these fashion accessories. Choose a style that works best for you and at the same time accentuates your clothing. You can put away your ordinary pair of working shoes and bring out a different pair w w w . a m g tt. c o m

that is stylish and helps boost the outfit. Now that you have the correct clothing you would need to pay attention to your face. Spend a little extra time on your makeup today. The first thing to do would be to use a facial scrub to remove the dead skin cells. This would then reveal smoother glowing skin. Glowing skin looks fresh and healthy and sets the way for a good foundation. Pay special attention to the eyes. They may be puffy or have dark circles, apply the foundation to hide the dark circles. Use of a bronze or copper eye shadow helps lighten the eyes and makes a more profound impact. Now that you have the outfit, shoes and makeup intact you are already looking fabulous. There is still one thing that is missing and this is a fabulous hand bag. Now ladies you’ll need to put away your ‘working handbag’ as it is so often called and bring out one of your diva numbers. A good handbag makes every outfit look its best. There are so many available on the market right now that it can be hard to choose just one. So I know that you have more than one on hand. So pick one up and you are on your way.

Home Fixes For Mosquito Bite Itches

P

eople in Trinidad and Tobago (or anywhere in the tropics for that matter) will be familiar with mosquitoes and what their bites can do. Pretty much everyone has had an itchy and uncomfortable mosquito bite before, but there are ways to reduce its effects. These simple home remedies will reduce your urge to scratch. Toothpaste For quick relief from mosquito bites, try applying a small amount of all-natural peppermint or neem-based toothpaste. Allow the paste to dry and leave for as long as desired. Aloe Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory properties, so this could help the itch. For even more relief, stash your aloe vera gel in the fridge, since the cold will also help with the itchiness. Vinegar When you first notice the itchy bite, try applying a small amount of vinegar directly to the bump. If you have many bites, you may want to take a very hot bath in 24

a tub filled with water and 2 1/2 cups of vinegar. Rubbing Alcohol Rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, and tea tree oil have antiseptic properties, so they could help prevent bites from getting infected. And their stinging sensation helps distract you from the itch. Hand sanitizers with alcohol will act in the same way. Lemon Lemon can work well in the fight against mosquito bites as well. Cut a lemon in half and scratch your itch with the soft pulpy side of it. This will reduce the chances of getting an infection from scratching with your fingernails. However, note that lemons are fruity and may attract more mosquitos.

ost people struggle to lose weight. Some keep going on one diet after another without any success. Well, that is not the actual truth. Some do lose weight but gain the weight back when they go back to eating normally. Depending on who you are, losing weight can be easy or difficult but not as difficult as keeping the weight off. Everyone keeps going on and on about dieting and doing cardio and they forget how important having muscle is when looking to lose weight. Adding muscle weight as a strategy will help you burn off more body fat and make you look good and keep you healthy. Too much is spoken of diets and aerobics but most forget the very important element muscle plays in keeping your metabolism up and keeping you lean. Performing strength training exercises will help you increase your muscle weight. This can sometimes discourage people since it does not look good on the scale. Muscle is heavier than fat and therefore having more muscle will increase your number on the scale but do not worry. The weight you put on because of the muscle is good weight. You might be heavier on the scale but you will not look it plus having more muscle will increase your metabolism and burn the fat that you want

to get rid of. When women who want to lose weight hear about weight training they start to worry because they do not like the idea that they will put on weight and look masculine. I would like you to put those fears aside because that will not happen. Women are built differently from men and therefore it is not easy for a woman to develop muscles like men do. Women's bodies respond differently to weight training so you would not have to worry. Plus there are a lot of men who go to the gym to lift weights and increase their muscle mass and even they will tell you that it is not an easy feat. For a woman, weight lifting will just improve your muscle tone and that can only be good if you want to look good and look lean. To prevent any injuries you should make sure you know what you are doing before starting a strength training regime. If you have any doubts, you can join the gym and have a personal assistant show you the ropes before going solo. That will start you off well and keep you abreast with the right information and the right techniques. Strength training will not only help you lose weight. It will also increase your strength and improve your overall health. You cannot go wrong with strength training so go for it.

Four Toxic Steps To A Foods Your Dog Secure Garage Shouldn’t Be Fed

N

ot more than ten years ago; seeing a fully enclosed garage in Trinidad and Tobago was a rarity. Now, there are more and more homes with electric garage doors keeping their vehicles and tools safe from the elements and bandits. If you want to make it even safer, peep at these tips.

W

e love sharing our human food with our pets. However, just because we love it and our dogs are willing to eat it doesn’t mean it is best for your pet. Here are some dangerous dog foods.

Install Motion-Sensing Lights Outdoor motion-sensing lights are a natural deterrent for unwanted guests. They work by detecting moving objects with infrared waves and are especially responsive to warm ones such as cars, animals and people.

Install A Security System. A security system in your garage, connected to your home security system, is your best line of defense. If anyone tries to enter your garage when your system is set, the alarm will sound and can alert emergency services to be dispatched.

Make It Hard To See Through The easiest way to tell if someone is home is by seeing their car in the driveway or the garage. No car usually means that there are no adults in the house. Large windows on your home front or garage door can also make it easy for thieves to check what’s inside and lure them in. So this doesn’t mean you need to get rid of the windows and the natural light they provide, but you can make it harder for outsiders to see through by using blinds, curtains, or you can obscure the view but let light in with translucent contact paper.

Secure The Emergency Release Your garage door should have an emergency release. It’s a cord that hangs inside your garage and is meant to be used to manually open the door in case the garage opener breaks down or becomes unresponsive. It may surprise you, but this is a major security weakness in your garage. Smart thieves can open your garage from the OUTSIDE by using a wire hanger to pull the cord down. To prevent this from happening, secure the emergency release cord with a few zip ties.

Alcohol I’m sure you’ve heard of the birthday parties where the dog accidentally gets into some of the spilled keg beer, and then gets all silly to the amusement of the crowd. While it may be funny to you, it’s not funny to your dog. Alcohol can cause not only intoxication, lack of coordination, poor breathing, and abnormal acidity, but potentially even coma and/or death. Chocolate This isn’t just an old wives’ tale. Chocolate contains a very toxic substance called methylxanthines, which are stimulants that stop a dog’s metabolic process. Even just a little bit of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can cause diarrhea and vomiting. A large amount can cause seizures, irregular heart function, and even death. Do not have chocolate in an accessible location. If you're dog

does ingest chocolate, contact a veterinarian. Grapes/Raisins Some dogs can consume grapes and /or raisins with no problems, but it is extremely risky to give these to your dog. This is because the consumption of grapes can lead to irreversible kidney damage. Keep them far from inquisitive pups. Macadamia Nuts These are some of the most poisonous foods for dogs. Macadamia nuts, part of the Protaceae family, can cause vomiting, increased body temperature, inability to walk, lethargy, and vomiting. Even worse, they can affect the nervous system. Never feed your pets macadamia nuts.

Overcoming Aviophobia

ou’ve worked hard and acquired the necessary wealth, plus you have the time off, but you still can’t visit your dream destination because you’re a scaredy cat. Shame on you! There really is no reason to be afraid of flying. The rumors about it being 50,000 times safer than traveling by car are not just rumors. We know it’s not that easy to just take our word for it, so read on to learn methods of dealing with your fear of flying. Pick the right seat Unless you're one of the few lucky ones who can afford to fly business or first class, the seat you will be allocated will not offer you much legroom. For the folks who fear flying, being in an enclosed space makes matters worse for them. So always try to choose a front row or exit row seat- even if you have to pay a little extra for these seats, it's well worth it. An aisle seat is also highly recommended, as it gives you the feeling of extra space. Mute the engine noise I'm not suggesting you ask the pilot to turn one of the engines off during your flight (not a smart safety move), but you can 28

do something about not hearing it anymore. Many fearful flyers become hyper listeners during the flight, because their brain is programmed to believe there will be some sort of life-threatening problem and will try to prove it by listening for the faintest of sounds. The best solution for this problem is to use sound cancelling headphones. Once the pilot gives you permission to use electronic devices, crank up your favourite tunes loaded on your phone or MP player, and close your eyes. See No Evil, Hear No Evil.

your mind, write it out, whisper it to the window – and imagine that your prayer has already been answered.

Pray You do not have to know who or what God is to pray. Imagine what you might like God to be—a friendly grandfather, a waterfall, or a wise Yodalike figure—and then pray to that. Simply think of Something that you believe is a positive, guiding force and ask for its comfort and guidance. Admit your fear. It’s surprising how immediate that source is when we are willing to reach for it. It is the paradox of prayer that when we admit our own limitations we become more powerful, as we are now willing to accept help. Try saying a prayer to yourself – say it in

Prepare for your trip When we take steps to organize our trip, we take steps to protect ourselves from extra or needless anxiety. Planning ahead gives us a sense of calm control. There are many ways we can plan ahead so that the “day of ” goes smoothly. For example: A few days before departure, make a list of everything you will pack: clothes, shoes, toiletries, medication, electronics (including chargers!), reading and writing material, passport or photo ID, gifts, etc. As things occur to you, add them to the list. Unhurried, you are less likely to forget something important.

Know what to expect A large part of being scared is not knowing what will happen next. Why is the plane going so fast? Why do my ears feel funny? Why does the wing look weird? Why are we hitting turbulence? Why are we being asked to keep our seat belts on? When presented with an unusual circumstance, your first instinct is to assume the worst. To minimize this, learn everything you can about flying. The plane needs to reach a certain speed so that it can take off, your ears are popping because of a change in pressure, certain parts of the wing are supposed to move, and so on: everything that is happening happens every time a plane goes into flight. Everything will be alright. Try to avoid those questions and think about how much fun you are going to have when you land. Find ways to make the trip seem shorter If you sit and worry, every minute of your flight will feel like an hour. Think of your favourite time-killing product - a fashion magazine; a portable video game; the latest electronic gadget, or a relaxing book - and go get it!
