Try these on for size. Accessorize the Cabinets Replacing cabinet hardware is an inexpensive and easy update. Find knobs and pulls that are the same size as the existing ones so you don't have to re-drill the cabinets. If your cabinets need more than new hardware, paint them. It can be a time-consuming project, but if done right; your kitchen will look brand new and add value to your home. Change the Faucets Just as with the cabinets, a little accessorizing goes a long way. A new fixture in the kitchen or bathroom can add that extra shine you're looking for. New kitchen faucets have a lot more functionality, so the upgrade can be more than just aesthetic. The great thing is, these can be done as a DIY project, because they aren’t difficult to change. Fix Squeaky Door Hinges Spray a little WD-40 onto the hinges, moving the door back and forth to work in the lubricant. Or try rubbing the hinges with petroleum jelly. If these tricks don’t work, lift the hinge pins about halfway and lubricate them with three-in-one oil, using a rag to catch drips. Not only

Put them outside in the sun for a few hours, flipping them halfway through. (Be careful leaving them out too long may fade the fabric.) The sun will help evaporate the moisture

Trying to match colours No matter how hard you try, you will never be able to "match" a color exactly from one surface to another. When you have a piece of fabric and want to find a carpet to match the exact color, you will find it an impossible task. Instead, look for colors that complement your fabric or a similar color that is a couple shades lighter or darker.

Not taking expert advice A good interior decorator will stand firm with his/her color recommendations and compare and explain to clients why it is the right choice. They know what they are doing. After all, that is why you requested their help. However, external influences such as television or opinionated neighbours tend to creep into your psyche and affect your dialogue with the decorator. Leave it to them. They can understand undertones and specify the right color. Plus they know that fixed and/or furnished elements often trump colors you might currently be in love with. Being Too Cautious This is especially true of exteriors. Not being adventurous enough with color can truly zap the spice out of your home. We don't need any more brown homes. This is the Caribbean. Our designs should be as zesty as the people who inhabit the archipelago. If you paint your

The types and amount of lighting you need varies from one room to another. For example, one room might call for plenty of cool, bright, general lighting throughout the entire space, while another would benefit from softer, layered lighting with warm undertones. The Best Way To Store Cement


hen building your home you may purchase a lot of materials in bulk to safeguard against running low on stock. In fact, many contractors advise that you purchase extra stock in the event that you need it. After construction however, you may have left-over materials and may need to house the leftover materials for use at a later date. Cement is one such item that can be left for a period of time without deteriorating but proper storage procedure must be followed.

Overrated And Useless Kitchen Appliances


t seems like some new appliance that promises the world of ease in the kitchen comes out every day. That doesn’t mean you should go out and purchase it. Some of these appliances are pretty darn useless if you ask me. I’ll list some of them and show you why. Deep Fryer Look, fatso: Enough of the food we eat out in the world on a daily basis is deep-fried as it is. If you're going through the trouble to cook at home, then take that extra step and cook healthy food for your family. What in God's name would you possibly need to deep-fry at home? Use a cast iron skillet with some oil in it if you need to fry something up. Besides, who wants a giant vat of used oil sitting on their countertop, slowly congealing and making your house smell like a McDonald's? Sigh! Electric Can Opener If you use one of these you are probably very lazy. Just because 16

ances you will find in a house. What separates it from other kettles? For one thing… it’s electric. That’s it. An electric kettle is plugged in so that it can heat up water. That's it. These devices are costly and senseless to own especially if you can grill meats for equally healthy options. In our opinion, unless you're serving up rotisserie chicken every night, spend your money elsewhere. Dishwashers If you own a restaurant, by all means get one of these. That is

For one, you save on energy and water consumption once done right. Also, it saves time. Bread Maker So you bought a nice, shiny bread maker. Woohoo!! Now you can bake bread all day long just like Sam Cooke would hammer (if he had a hammer of course). These machines are not that useful to most people. If you are a regular bread maker, it may be for you, but even many regular bakers don’t touch their bread makers. Follow the right recipe and you can use your conventional oven with stellar results. That means you can save countertop space.



Sumptuous Snacks

PEANUT BUTTER SNACK BARS Ingredients Parchment paper Cooking spray 3/4 cup chopped dark chocolate 2 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup wheat germ 1/4 cup flax seeds 1 cup crispy rice cereal 1 cup cornflake crumbs 3/4 cup chopped almonds 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons agave nectar 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions Line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. Spread chocolate evenly over prepared baking dish. Toast oats, wheat germ, and flax seed in a non-stick skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently until oats are lightly golden and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Transfer oat mixture to a large bowl and stir in crispy rice cereal, cornflake crumbs, almonds, and salt. Heat honey, peanut butter, brown sugar, agave nectar, canola oil, and cinnamon in a saucepan 18

over medium heat. Cook and stir until mixture begins to bubble, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour peanut butter mixture over cereal mixture; gently stir until well mixed. Spread peanut butter-cereal mixture into the baking dish. Place another sheet of parchment over the mixture and firmly press into the dish until even. Allow to completely cool before removing from baking dish and slicing.

SUGAR COATED PECANS Ingredients 1 egg white 1 tablespoon water 1 pound pecan halves 1 cup white sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Directions Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Grease one baking sheet. In a mixing bowl, whip together the egg white and water until frothy. In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add pecans to egg whites, stir to coat the nuts evenly. Remove the nuts, and toss them in the sugar mixture until coated. Spread the nuts out on the prepared baking sheet. Bake at 250 degrees F (120 degrees C) for 1 hour. Stir every 15 minutes.

CINNAMON SWEET POTATO CHIPS Ingredients 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and

thinly sliced 1 tablespoon melted butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease two baking sheets. Arrange sweet potato slices in a single layer onto baking sheets. Stir together butter, salt, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl; brush onto sweet potato slices. Bake in preheated oven until edges curl upwards, about 20 to 25 minutes.

CURRIED POPCORN Ingredients 3 tablespoons coconut oil 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric 1/4 teaspoon curry powder 1/4 teaspoon cumin 2 dashes hot sauce 1 gallon popped popcorn Directions Melt the coconut oil in a small saucepan over medium heat; stir in the garlic, turmeric, curry powder, and cumin; keep over heat 1 minute. Reduce heat to low and simmer 1 minute more. Add the hot sauce and pour over the popcorn. Serve immediately.

BROILED LEMON AND GARLIC TIGER PRAWNS Ingredients 1 1/2 pounds tiger prawns, peeled and deveined 1 cup butter 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese Directions Preheat oven on broiler setting. With a sharp knife, remove tails from prawns, and butterfly them from the underside. Arrange prawns on broiler pan. In a small saucepan, melt butter with garlic and lemon juice. Pour 1/4 cup butter mixture in a small bowl, and brush onto prawns. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over prawns. Place broiler pan on top rack, and broil prawns for 4 to 5 minutes, or until done. Serve with remaining butter mixture for dipping.

SPINACH BALLS Ingredients 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 2 cups finely crushed herb-seasoned dry bread stuffing mix 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 cup melted butter 3 eggs, beaten Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a large bowl combine spinach, stuffing mix, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, black pepper, Italian seasoning, melted butter and eggs. Shape into walnut-sized balls and place on a baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until heated through and browned.

For one thing the use of the belt should be stopped. Remember you are the first person that a child looks up to as an example and role model. They will begin to think that things can be fixed by using violence. The methods used by most parents are the same methods that their parents would have used to discipline them as a child. Think about the methods used to discipline you as a child and how they made you feel. Do you think that it is right to use the same methods on your own children? Most parents will answer no to this question, especially if they were disciplined with the use of a belt. Too often the extent to which a child is disciplined depends on the mood of the parent. Be careful not to let stress from the activities of your day interfere with the way you handle your children. If at the moment you are stressed out, take the time to sit and calm yourself. Doing this will allow you to better deal with the situation and deliver the appropriate method of discipline. Discipline should not leave scars on your child. If this is happening it

For smaller kids you can use the time out option. The child should be placed in an area where they are not distracted and where there is nothing to amuse them. All toys must also be taken away. The child is given time to think about what was done to cause you, the parent, to discipline them. The best place to put the child is facing a wall.


No child likes to do extra chores, so this is an excellent way to discipline them. Let them do something that they don’t like to do. If they don’t like cleaning their room let them clean it. This also gives you an opportunity to talk to your child. You can find out what is bothering them and why they behave the way they do.

Create a schedule with your kids and stick to it. Being consistent in what you do helps a child to be disciplined. The less free time a child has the less likely that child will get into trouble. Your child must know that there is a time to play, learn and a time to rest. Spend some time each day with your kids and talk to them and you would definitely see the difference.


Sometimes the best way to understand what we are doing is to see the effect that it has on others. If there are sibling fights show them how they hurt each other. Let them say how they feel about fighting each other. Once they understand how their behavior affects others they will be more considerate. Understanding how they can sometimes hurt people is discipline enough for them.


Children like rewards and trinkets so promise them that if they behave they would get a surprise. This is a friendly way to discipline your child and also a great way to reward them when they do well. The thought of a surprise will deter then from doing something that could cause you to discipline. After a while the surprises will no longer be needed because the child would have trained themselves to behave.


You can also discipline a child by doing the opposite to grounding. You can take

them out shopping. The trick here is to buy things for yourself only. Explain to the child that if they behave themselves next time you would buy something special for them. For a child, going shopping and not getting anything could be very sad.


Set rules for the child to follow. Children learn by example so be the best example for your child. Have a set of rules that you expect the child to follow placed in a location that the child can see. Rules remind us of what should be done and what should not be. A constant reminder often deters us from making a mistake.


If you want your infant to learn how to use a potty you have to train him. Take the time out to sit and read to him when he is on his training potty. If he dirties his pants while playing, clean him and let him sit on his potty for a few minutes. He will soon know when to go and use the potty for himself. Discipline isn’t just about punishing children when they do wrong. It deals with teaching them good behavior and also the difference between right and wrong. It has a lot to do with establishing order in a household. Yes we all know that parenting is hard and there are times when the easiest thing to do is pick up a belt. Toothpaste For quick relief from mosquito bites, try applying a small amount of all-natural peppermint or neem-based toothpaste. Allow the paste to dry and leave for as long as desired. Aloe Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory properties, so this could help the itch. For even more relief, stash your aloe vera gel in the fridge, since the cold will also help with the itchiness. Vinegar When you first notice the itchy bite, try applying a small amount of vinegar directly to the bump. If you have many bites, you may want to take a very hot bath in 24
