Everyone has their own personal favourite, but I love Kenyan coffees for their bright and lively flavours. They are grown in the Highlands where the cool evenings and warm days allow the bean to grow slowly and develop their classic taste profile. To me, they are a bit like drinking the best cabernet sauvignon in wine terms!
Q. Do you sell coffee making kit for home brewers? We do. We also offer a range of short courses to help bring out the inner-coffee lover in you! All sorts of people come to the roastery, and that is another of our fundamental beliefs - that we are open to everyone! We believe that everyone deserves the best freshly roasted coffee and loose leaf teas. And the best way to enjoy the coffee is to have an understanding of how to brew it at home. We like to share our knowledge and spend time with any customer who comes in wanting to find out more. Our café /shop is open seven days a week, and there is always someone on hand to chat. Q. We always love to ask - what's your secret to the balance of a perfect flat white? Well, there's an irony here. It should be simple enough to make a delicious flat white, but so often it isn't. Why is this? There are three essential elements to making great
coffee - the right equipment, a good barista and FRESHLY roasted coffee. This third element is often overlooked. The best barista is not going to be able to make a great drink out of stale beans. I always say that we wouldn't eat stale bread so why drink stale coffee? Q. Tell me a little about your various loose tea selection The business originally started as a specialist tea company, so our knowledge and range of loose leaf teas are extensive you can come to the café and drink up to 40 different types of loose leaf tea. These are served in a range of innovative and practical teaware that can be purchased to take home too. We hand blend our teas, so you are guaranteed to have a fresh supply! Q. Are there any homemade cakes on offer? Of course. We work with a lovely local lady called Tamsin who hand bakes all our cakes. They are all unique to us including our famous Mocha Stout cake! Local bakers Coburn and Baker supply us with a range of sourdough bread, croissants and vegan sausage rolls.
Q. It's unique for customers to view the roastery at work, do you offer training to budding baristas?
Absolutely. We work with many different cafes and restaurants to help develop their barista skills as well as with the general public. We enjoy sharing our knowledge and expertise. Furthermore, we have recently built a specialist course room where we hold a range of other foodie related workshops - chocolate making, baking and cheese courses! Check out our website for details.
Q. Do you have any plans you would like to share with us? Well, we have recently expanded into a more extensive café which gives people the chance to sit down and enjoy our coffee, cakes and savoury range. So for the time being, we are going to consolidate this! However, there are plans for other areas in which to grow such as starting a bakery and maybe offering evenings with music etc..!
