This review is from: American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History (Hardcover) Chris Kyle thinks he's a real bad-ass. Which is fine, because I tend to agree. American Sniper provides a look into what goes on in BUD/S and other SEAL training, but without much depth or detail. Instead, we're told more about the field action, the camaraderie of a SEAL team, what kinds of hazing the new guys receive, and a host of other things more interesting than BUD/S. As far as the sniping record, the author is proud; he reminds us of it frequently and is unapologetic, even saying of killing someone, "It's no big deal." However you may feel about that statement, it's probably the appropriate attitude for someone who needed to kill so often. There are war stories here of varying detail (some, I felt, not detailed enough) and anecdotes aplenty, some almost unbelievable. It's easy to feel proud of American troops when they're doing their jobs this well. The combat action was gritty and vividly explained. Other times, we're shown that even a SEAL has droughts of boredom, which to them seems to be whenever they aren't on their guns. The book provides interesting insight into the gear an elite soldier uses in combat, with a particularly good segment in which Chris identifies the rifles he used and his typical load-out. The heart (but not the majority) of this book lies in the candid confessions of Chris and his wife Taya about the toll the life of a professional soldier can take on a family. The first editorial review on Amazon describes the book as 'eloquent.' I wouldn't say that; this isn't lofty reading. It is however, a unique first person account of the war, exciting and emotional, occasionally funny enough to make you smirk, and a quick read. I had a few minor formatting issues with the Kindle version, nothing serious. I'd recommend it.
