ARM Based RFID Tester ARM based RFID tester is needed to check weather RFID that is manufactured by a company works properly in every manner. This system works with ARM Technology which is faster in performance for better and real time results. ARM Technology ARM is a a 32-bit RISC processor architecture currently being developed by the ARM corporation. The business model behind ARM is based on licensing the ARM architecture to companies that want to manufacture ARM-based CPU’s or system-on-achip products. The two main types of licenses are the Implementation license and the Architecture license. The Implementation license provides complete information required to design and manufacture integrated circuits containing an ARM processor core. ARM licenses two types of cores: Soft-cores and hard cores. A hard core is optimised for a specific manufacturing process, while a soft core can be used in any process but is less optimised. The architecture license enables the licensee to develop their own processors compliant with the ARM ISA. ARM processors possess a unique combination of features that makes ARM the most popular embedded architecture today. First, ARM cores are very simple compared to most other general-purpose processors, which means that they can be manufactured using a comparatively small number of transistors, leaving plenty of space on the chip for application-specific macrocells. A typical ARM chip can contain several peripheral controllers, a digital signal processor, and some amount of on-chip memory, along with an ARM core. Second, both ARM ISA and pipeline design are aimed at minimising energy consumption — a critical requirement in mobile embedded systems. Third, the ARM architecture is highly modular: the only mandatory component of an ARM processor is the integer pipeline; all other components, including caches, MMU, floating point and other co-processors are optional, which gives a lot of flexibility in building application-specific ARM-based processors. Finally, while being small and low-power, ARM processors provide high performance for embedded applications. For example, the PXA255 XScale processor running at 400MHz provides performance comparable to Pentium 2 at 300MHz, while using fifty times less energy. What is RFID? Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that allows automatic identification and / or tracking of people or goods. The data transmitted can provide identification information, details about the product tagged, or location. RFID also makes contactless electronic transactions possible. RFID increases security and safety, improves business processes and speeds transactions.

There are many applications for RFID technology, including business, government, law enforcement, healthcare, education, entertainment, and transportation. How does RFID work? RFID systems are made of: • • •

A tag or transponder which contains information and can be attached to a person or included in a product. This is generally a microchip embedded in a card. A reader which scans the transponder and access the information it contains. A database to check the information provided by the reader.

Most RFID tags currently avaiable are made of silicon. A number of companies are developing polymer tags that will be roll printable and much less expensive than siliconbased tags. Active and passive RFID systems •

Passive RFID tags do not have their own power source but require energy from the reader to power up. Practically, this means that a passive RFID tag can only transmit when it comes within range of an RFID reader - up to a few meters depending on the operating frequency. Since they do not require a power source, passive RFID systems can be very small: less than 0.15 mm and thinner than a piece of paper. An active RFID tag contains a battery and therefore can send data without being powered by the reader.
