VICTORIOUS BY DESIGN Spotlight IN THE

LEADERSHIP IN FOCUS

A Conversation with Christian Muntean

Anchorage, Alaska, with its breathtaking landscapes and sense of community, served as the backdrop for Christian Muntean’s formative years. From this setting, Christian cultivated the values of hard work, resilience, and vision—qualities that have propelled him to become a thought leader in executive coaching and corporate leadership. Today, as the President of Vantage Consulting, Christian channels his passion for helping leaders and teams thrive into strategies that have shaped high-performing organizations across industries.

In a conversation with VBD Magazine, Christian shared his journey, insights, and the principles that continue to guide him. “I’ve worked, studied, and lived all over the world, but I’ve settled back in Alaska,” he began. Married with three children, Christian’s life is a blend of professional excellence and family-centered priorities. “We’re an active, athletically oriented family. Lots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, basketball, gymnastics, and dance. My wife is in private practice as a counselor, so we’re a family that values connection, movement, and personal growth.”

Christian’s story is a compelling example of how leadership, vision, and intentionality can create lasting impact. Whether through coaching, consulting, or his writing, Christian’s work serves as a reminder that effective leadership is as much about personal growth as it is about organizational success.

EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

Christian’s educational journey reflects his deep commitment to personal and professional growth. He earned an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership, equipping him with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of human behavior and organizational dynamics. To further enhance his expertise, he became a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA), achieved certification in Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), and attained the status of Master Executive Coach.

Beyond his impressive academic and professional credentials, Christian’s passion for learning extends to his hobbies. As an enthusiastic woodworker, he finds joy in crafting, even as he humorously admits that his “enthusiasm easily exceeds his skill.” This balance of discipline and play reflects his philosophy that growth happens both in the boardroom and in personal pursuits.

A JOURNEY ROOTED IN LEADERSHIP

Christian’s path to becoming an author, executive coach, speaker, and consultant began in international disaster relief and community development. “I saw that even well-funded projects could fail if they were poorly led or if the team didn’t work well together. Conversely, underfunded projects in conflict zones could succeed with strong leadership and team dynamics,” he recalled.

This realization fueled Christian’s passion for leadership. “I decided to focus on helping leaders and teams perform well because their success has a cascading effect on communities and organizations.” In 2016, he founded Vantage Consulting, expanding from his nonprofit background to work primarily with private-sector clients.

RESIST THE URGE TO ISOLATE YOURSELF. DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEERS, MENTORS, AND COACHES WHO UNDERSTAND THE JOB AND CAN PROVIDE INSIGHT. THIS WILL BE CRITICAL FOR BOTH YOUR SUCCESS AND ENJOYMENT IN THE ROLE.

Through Vantage Consulting, Christian helps businesses achieve remarkable results. “I’ve helped owners and executives of small and medium-sized businesses boost their top-line revenues by over $500 million, while also reclaiming precious time for their families and passions,” he noted.

THE CORE OF HIGH PERFORMANCE

Asked about his approach to building high-performing organizations, Christian emphasized three core principles: simplicity, focus, and alignment. “Keep things as simple as possible. Have a very clear focus—don’t tolerate ambiguity. And work to ensure alignment around shared values and a common vision,” he advised.

These strategies extend into Christian’s work as an executive coach. His book, The Successful New CEO, was born out of his desire to guide new leaders stepping into the complexities of executive roles. “Leadership isn’t just a title. It’s something we do. To consistently do it well, we have to become the kind of person who can fill the role gracefully and successfully,” Christian explained.

The book outlines four primary insights for new CEOs:

1. Lead from within: “You can only lead out of who you are,” Christian emphasized.

2. Focus on the core skills: “Create purpose, build people, and persuade effectively.

3. Lead leaders effectively: “Executives lead other leaders—capable people who may not think they need you. Building an aligned team of strong personalities is key.”

4. Start strong: “How you begin your new role sets the stage for either success or challenges.”

THE POWER OF CULTURE

For Christian, corporate culture is the foundation of sustainable success. “Culture impacts almost every aspect of your business,” he said. “Companies with great cultures will attract, build, and retain the best employees, which

translates to long-term performance. Leaders who learn how to build and nurture such a culture will set their organizations apart.”

This understanding aligns with emerging trends in leadership and executive coaching. “More leaders want a healthier life—not just success at work. Coaches need to approach clients holistically, integrating work-life balance into strategies for growth,” Christian noted.

WISDOM FOR ASPIRING EXECUTIVES

When asked about the most critical advice for new executives, Christian’s response was direct. “Resist the urge to isolate yourself. Develop relationships with peers, mentors, and coaches who understand the job and can provide insight. This will be critical for both your success and enjoyment in the role.”

He also emphasized the importance of prioritization. “You’ll be faced with a whirlwind of issues and opportunities. The ability to identify and focus on what truly matters is what separates excellent leaders from the rest.”

STAYING GROUNDED AND MOTIVATED

Despite the demands of his work, Christian prioritizes balance and personal well-being. “I protect my evenings and weekends for family. Those times are sacred,” he said. His self-care routine includes walking, prayer, regular workouts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and hobbies like woodworking and playing guitar.

This holistic approach to life fuels his motivation. “I love what I do, so motivation comes naturally. But I also believe it’s better to maintain health than try to recover it. That philosophy guides how I manage stress and time.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Christian is constantly evolving. “I’m in the process of launching a YouTube channel and have outlines for several books. I just need to pick one and move forward,” he shared. Professionally, his goal is to grow his business while spending even more time with his family.

As he continues to empower leaders and organizations, Christian remains focused on his mission: helping others achieve success without sacrificing what matters most. Through his work, he exemplifies the principles of clarity, alignment, and purpose, inspiring leaders to excel in their roles and make meaningful contributions to the world.

Nichelle WilksStichtenoth

TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH THE POWER OF MOVEMENT

Fitness should never feel like a chore,” says Nichelle Wilks-Stichtenoth. “It should feel like a celebration—of what our bodies can do, of how far we’ve come, and of the strength we continue to build, physically and emotionally.”

Nichelle is more than a fitness instructor—she’s a movement enthusiast, mental wellness advocate, and CEO on a mission to redefine the way people perceive fitness. Her journey began in the vibrant Jamaican countryside, where her love for movement and zest for life first took root. Today, as the founder of Nichelle Fitness in Germany, she channels that same boundless energy and passion into helping others embrace fitness as a joyful way of life.

ROOTED IN JAMAICA, BLOSSOMING IN GERMANY

Nichelle hails from Linstead, Jamaica, where the vibrant culture and natural beauty shaped her zest for life. Her childhood was filled with energy, running barefoot through her yard, competing in long jump, and participating in track races with fierce determination. These formative experiences instilled in her a love of movement that would become the foundation of her career.

In 2006, Nichelle faced a pivotal moment when she decided to move from the warmth of Jamaica to the unfamiliar climate of Germany. It was a decision filled with excitement but also fear— fear of leaving behind everything she knew, fear of the unknown, and fear of whether she could build a new life in a foreign land with a different culture and language. The move was daunting, but Nichelle’s adventurous spirit and unyielding determination propelled her forward.

STRENGTH TRAINING EMPOWERS ME, WHILE

DANCE WORKOUTS ALLOW ME TO UNLEASH MY CREATIVITY AND JOY— ESPECIALLY WHEN I CAN VIBE TO MY FAVORITE TUNES!

Upon arriving in Germany, she encountered challenges that tested her resolve. From learning a new language to understanding cultural norms, every step was a lesson in adaptation. Yet, amid the uncertainty, Nichelle found her anchor in fitness. Exercise became her refuge, a way to ground herself in her new reality and maintain her connection to the energetic life she had cherished in Jamaica.

It was through fitness that Nichelle not only navigated her fears but also rediscovered her purpose. What began as a personal commitment to staying active evolved into a mission to inspire others. Germany became the canvas for her passion, and Nichelle blossomed into a fitness leader, bringing her unique blend of energy, joy, and resilience to a new audience. Her journey is a testament to the power of facing fears, embracing change, and finding strength in movement.

BEYOND PHYSICAL TRANSFORMATION

Fitness is more than a series of exercises—it is a journey toward self-discovery and empowerment. Nichelle’s philosophy transcends the physical benefits of working out, focusing instead on fostering a harmonious connection between the mind, body, and soul. To her, fitness is not just about achieving a specific body type or hitting a number on the scale; it’s about finding joy in movement, building confidence, and cultivating a lifestyle of wellness.

Nichelle’s philosophy emphasizes that the benefits of fitness extend far beyond the gym. Movement has the power to transform lives by boosting self-esteem, enhancing mental clarity, and fostering emotional balance. Her clients don’t just gain stronger bodies—they leave her classes feeling more confident, capable, and equipped to take on life’s challenges.

By redefining fitness as a holistic, joyful experience, Nichelle has created a space where people can not only achieve their health goals but also find deeper connections to themselves and others. It’s this comprehensive approach that makes her work transformative and enduring.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WELLNESS

At Nichelle Fitness, the programs are designed to address the whole person, blending physical activity with mental and emotional well-being:

l Physical Wellness:

Nichelle’s classes cater to all fitness levels and ages, ensuring that everyone—from beginners to seasoned athletes—feels welcome. From high-energy dance cardio infused with reggae beats to strength training sessions that are designed to challenge and empower, Nichelle’s workouts are as effective as they are enjoyable.

l Mental Clarity: Understanding the deep connection between physical activity and mental health, Nichelle incorporates mindfulness and stress-relief techniques into her sessions. Whether it’s the rhythmic flow of a dance routine or the meditative focus required during strength exercises, her programs are crafted to quiet the mind and build resilience.

l Emotional Resilience: Nichelle believes in celebrating every step of the journey, big or small. Her supportive environment encourages clients to embrace progress over perfection, helping them develop the emotional strength to face challenges both inside and outside the gym.

A SPACE FOR JOY AND COMMUNITY

Nichelle Fitness started as a vision to make exercise fun and inclusive. Over time, it evolved into a movement promoting holistic wellness.

One of the cornerstones of Nichelle’s approach to fitness is making it accessible and inclusive. Her classes are not just workouts—they are an experience. Infused with vibrant music and positive energy, they transform exercise into a celebration of movement. Clients often describe her sessions as a mix of fun, motivation, and

camaraderie, where breaking a sweat feels less like a chore and more like a shared moment of joy.

“Fitness shouldn’t feel like a chore or something you ‘have’ to do,” states Nichelle, “it should be something you look forward to, something that brings you joy, and something that makes you feel good from the inside out. That’s the energy I bring to my classes and to my brand - creating an environment where people are encouraged to enjoy the journey, not just chase the destination. Whether we’re dancing, stretching, or pushing through a tough workout, it’s all about celebrating movement and how it makes us feel, rather than focusing solely on external results.”

Beyond the physical and mental aspects, Nichelle places great importance on building a sense of community. Her programs foster connections among participants, creating a supportive network where individuals uplift and inspire one another. Whether it’s a first-time attendee or a seasoned regular, everyone is made to feel like part of a larger family united by the shared goal of living healthier, happier lives.

OVERCOMING

CHALLENGES WITH GRACE

Nichelle’s journey as a Jamaican entrepreneur in Germany has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. Navigating

language barriers and establishing her brand in a competitive market required resilience and adaptability. Yet, her determination propelled her forward:

l Immersion in German Culture: Nichelle learned the language and integrated German traditions into her classes, making clients feel at home.

l Continuous Learning: She pursued certifications and stayed ahead of fitness trends to deliver innovative and impactful programs.

l Authenticity: Staying true to her Jamaican roots, Nichelle infused her workouts with reggae rhythms and dancehall vibes, creating a unique and energetic experience.

Key highlights of Nichelle’s journey include:

l Virtual Programs: Offering online classes to make fitness accessible globally.

l Community Events: Hosting annual summer workout events that bring people together to celebrate movement.

l Collaborations: Partnering with wellness professionals to provide clients with comprehensive health solutions.

GOALS THAT PUSH THE LIMITS

Nichelle’s approach to fitness goes far beyond routines and reps—her personal regimen is built on variety, energy, and a deep love for movement. “My personal fitness routine is all about variety and keeping things fresh!” she shares enthusiastically. Whether it’s strength training, dance workouts, or cardio sessions, Nichelle believes that blending different forms of exercise keeps both her mind and body engaged. “Strength training empowers me, while dance workouts allow me to unleash my creativity and joy—especially when I can vibe to my favorite tunes!”

For Nichelle, music is a game-changer. “The rhythm and beat are what keep me going,” she explains, noting how carefully curated playlists transform her workouts into energetic, sweat-breaking celebrations. “Whether it’s reggae, dancehall, or global hits, music fuels the movement. The right song can push me through that final set

or make me keep dancing even when I’m tired. My clients love it too—it’s like a mini party where we break a sweat!”

Whether it’s lifting heavier weights, mastering new movements, or improving her endurance, Nichelle’s focus is on consistent progress. “Right now, one of my personal goals is to challenge my body while staying in tune with what it needs,” she explains.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Nichelle envisions an exciting future for Nichelle Fitness, focused on global accessibility, holistic wellness, and community building. She is expanding her virtual offerings with live and on-demand classes, making fitness accessible to people anywhere in the world.

Nichelle also plans to host annual summer workout events, blending high-energy fitness sessions with a celebratory atmosphere. These events will foster community, bringing people together to enjoy movement and wellness.

Collaborating with nutritionists and mental health professionals, she is crafting comprehensive programs that address the body, mind, and soul. Additionally, through mentorship initiatives, she aims to inspire and guide the next generation of fitness leaders.

With her unwavering passion, Nichelle is creating a legacy of empowerment, ensuring fitness is a joyful, transformative experience for all.

A LEGACY OF EMPOWERMENT

As Nichelle continues to grow her brand, she remains grounded in her purpose: to inspire people to embrace fitness as a tool for transformation. Her message is clear—fitness is not about perfection; it is about progress, resilience, and finding joy in the journey. Through Nichelle Fitness, Nichelle is changing lives, one workout at a time, proving that with the right mindset and a little movement, anything is possible.

Empower Yourself For The New Year

The new year is here, and with it comes that collective pause—those moments we all feel where time slows, the air shifts, and you sense a new beginning around the corner. There’s something about January 1st that makes

you dread it’s coming. I feel it’s God’s blank page waiting for us to pick up the pen; daring us to write something bold and do something different.

Look at it like this …the new year is a new opportunity that awaits your acts

of faith or your paralyzation by fear. That’s deep. You can either embrace the new year with faith or corrupt it before it even begins with fear. Just know, whatever energy you allow to exist, will be the energy that will carry you forward.

Let’s discuss this. There are two types of energy. The “fear start” and the “fresh start.” The “fear start” energy is looking for, or anticipating the absolute worst or the same things—as in nothing will change or making resolutions you know from jump didn’t work the last time. Simply doing nothing and allowing the precious commodity of time to slip by.

The “fresh start” energy isn’t about resolutions we won’t keep or unrealistic ideals. It’s about choosing, with intention, to empower ourselves by moving in and by faith. Believing that if God said it, it is so; and causing our minds to think in accordance with the way our hearts feels (Proverbs 23:7). The example: God gives you a moment to decide what your new year will be, and you can abort the opportunity by failing to write the plan or write the plan that leads to your purpose. It’s all up to you.

The word, “Empowerment” gets thrown around a lot—overused and under-explained. So let’s break it down into something real: Empowerment is yours to create. It’s not a magical gift from God or an award someone else hands you. It’s the moment you decide to take ownership of your life with the authority God has given to you—to do something. The moment you realize that you—not your circumstances, not the opinions of others, or missed chances, but you— hold the power to shape your next chapter.

Sounds amazing, right? But how do we actually do that? Let’s keep it simple.

1. Own Your Story—Without Apology You don’t need permission to be you. Too often, we shrink to make others comfortable, downplay our successes so we don’t seem boastful, or we hide our struggles because we’re afraid to look messy. Not this year. Owning your story means embracing all parts of it—the victories, struggles, setbacks, and breakthroughs.

Here’s the truth: Everything you’ve gone through has led you to this moment.

It’s time to stand tall and claim it. When you own your story unapologetically, you not only step into your power, you inspire others to do the same. It’s the zone where you can remind yourself that no one can declare you’re wrong because no one has ever been you.

2. Set Intentions, Not Just Goals Goals are great—but let’s be real, they can feel like another to-do list we stress about. Intentions, though? They’re different. Setting an intention is about choosing how you want to feel and who you want to be , no matter what life throws your way or whether you do or decide not to do.

Do you want to feel courageous? Kind? Resilient? Determined? or Lazy? Decide, and then let your actions flow from there. Maybe your goal is to start a business, learn a skill, or improve your health. Pair it with an intention like, “I will put my trust in the Lord and lean not to my own understanding and allow prayer to become my guide.” That’s empowerment—because it puts God in control of how you move forward, step by step.

3. Let Go of the Need for “Perfect” Perfectionism is the enemy of progress (and let’s face it—it’s exhausting). If God wanted you perfect, He would not have sent Jesus. Determine that this year, you are giving yourself permission to be processed for purpose. Growth is messy; empowerment is in the mix of that mess. It’s in the moments that you try, when you may or may not stumble, when you get back up, shake off the dust, and keep moving.

Perfection doesn’t inspire people— authenticity does. When you let go of the impossible idea of being perfect, you make space to show up fully as yourself.

4. Take Action, Even if It’s Small Empowerment doesn’t happen in one big, life-changing moment. It’s in the small choices you make daily. It’s saying “yes” to that opportunity that scares you, “no” to something that drains you, and “not yet” to things that aren’t aligned

with your vision. It’s when you say, “If the Lord wills,” instead of a quick yes to everything.

Small steps compound over time. Start with one: Make that phone call. Write down your idea. Take a walk. Speak up in the meeting. Ask for help. Whatever it is— take one small step today. Then another tomorrow. Before you know it, you’ll look back and realize just how far you’ve come.

5. Surround Yourself with People Who See Your Light

This is big right here! Empowerment is like an ivy plant; it thrives in the right environment. Take stock of the people in your life—do they cheer you on or hold you back? Do they challenge you to grow, or do they keep you small? Do they accept you as you are, or press you to be who you are becoming? Are you surrounded by light givers or light dimmers?

Find the people who see your light, even when you don’t. Those who remind you of your worth when you start to forget it. Relationships are everything, so protect your space and energy. You deserve to be surrounded by those who encourage your boldest dreams.

6. Last but not least…This Year, Choose You

Here’s the thing: Empowerment isn’t about being fearless or having it all figured out. It’s about choosing you again and again. It’s about showing up, trying, falling, getting up, and growing stronger with each step.

So, as you embrace stepping into this new year, remember: Your power isn’t waiting for you somewhere out there. It’s already within you . The question is, will you claim it?

Decide now. Say it with me: “This is my year to rise. I will embrace my growth. I will claim my power. I am enough, as I am, and I am ready for all God has in store for me.”

Let’s make it happen.

Derek & Sherene Lewis

A LEGACY OF FAMILY, BUSINESS, AND COMMUNITY

Derek and Sherene Lewis epitomize a true-to-life portrait of those individuals who live “victoriously by design.” Their love story, dynamic careers, and unyielding commitment to family have established an undeniable legacy worth celebrating. From humble beginnings to extraordinary achievements, the couple has been a guiding light of perseverance and success. As they continue writing new chapters in their shared life journey, their story is one of resilience, inspiration, faith, and hope. We are honored to feature this talented duo and their family in the first edition of the New Year 2025.

A LOVE STORY

Derek and Sherene met as undergraduate students at Hampton University, a private, Historically Black College in Hampton, Virginia. Sherene, a Political Science major, and Derek, a Business major, met while she was beginning her college career and he was ending his. They dated briefly, lost touch for several years, and reconnected in Sherene’s senior year at Hampton. Ironically, Derek returned to the campus as an alum of the university to recruit for Pepsi. As fate would have it, their love story resumed, and later, they married in August 1992. Their joyous union has produced three children: Devon, 29; Jordan, 26, and Kellan, 18.

As Sherene recalls, “Derek encouraged me to make a career move to PepsiCo. I began a 15-year career at Taco Bell, serving in operations, marketing, and real estate product development roles. I retired once our third child, Kellan, was born.” Kellan is currently attending HU as a fourth-generation Hamptonian. The family is well known for supporting the institution and has established a great legacy at Hampton.

Derek grew up in Washington, DC, known commonly as the “Chocolate City,” in a single-parent household. Lewis shares, “There were three boys, and I was the oldest. Early on, I took on a leadership role in my family for us to survive and advance.” He worked hard in school and attended Catholic school—Saint John’s, grades 1-8; John Carroll High School in DC, grades 9-12. Lewis remarks, “The Catholic school setting provided a disciplined environment, quality education, and opportunity to develop focus.” Then, Lewis, as a third-generation Hamptonian, was off to university studies in the fall of 1984. Lewis says, “Meeting Sherene at HU was the greatest thing that could have ever happened.”

“We have always rooted our relationship in faith, trust, and a deep understanding of each other’s dreams,” Sherene shares. Derek adds, “We’ve built something special because we’ve supported each other every step of the way.” Their partnership has been a meeting of two driven minds with a shared vision for personal and

professional success. Derek and Sherene met through a shared commitment to personal growth and have been each other’s biggest supporters ever since.

INTEGRATING CORPORATE AND FAMILY SUCCESS

In 2022, Lewis retired from a 35-year career at PepsiCo. During his time with the company, he rose through the ranks, beginning as a campus hire and culminating his career with a seat at the C-suite corporate table as PepsiCo President, Multi-Cultural, North America. Derek’s career trajectory with PepsiCo is a testament to his leadership acumen and strategic vision. He made a profound impact by rising through the ranks to hold significant positions in the corporate organization.

Balancing the demands of a corporate job with family life was challenging. Derek explains, "I adhere to an ABC rule with my family and work: create accessibility to both work and home, establish balance, and continuously communicate. It’s about delivering a quality work-life situation, day in and day out. Finding the right balance means successfully integrating both areas into your daily life.”

Lewis’s philosophy asserts that accessibility is essential. He states, “I didn’t miss important things at work. I didn’t miss important things at home.” He also stresses the importance of balance. He says, “When I was on vacation, I checked a few things here and there but enjoyed going on holiday. Operating with and being

intentional about balance is essential as it sustains an individual being his best self at work and home.”

For the last component of his ABC rule, Lewis offers, “Communication is key. When I need to be away from home or the office, I communicate and let people know what’s coming up. The ABC rule of Accessibility, Balance, and Communication is essential in striving for a point of equilibrium.”

Not done, Derek shares the three Rs: “I visualize a house of success erected on a solid foundation with three main pillars: results, relationships, and reputation. Results matter, so be sure to get the right numbers. Relationships are key to navigating the journey, and it is best to have trust, collaboration, and teamwork with others. Reputation is your image, your brand. Your reputation

speaks to your character and image and can affect the opportunities you gain. Overall, it’s more about quality than quantity; get the numbers (results), but don’t lose sight of quality, make connections (relationships), and work on the brand continuously (reputation). Again, these three Rs apply to my approach to family and work.”

COMMUNICATION IS KEY. WHEN I NEED TO BE AWAY FROM HOME OR THE OFFICE, I COMMUNICATE AND LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT'S COMING UP. THE ABC RULE OF ACCESSIBILITY, BALANCE, AND COMMUNICATION IS ESSENTIAL IN STRIVING FOR A POINT OF EQUILIBRIUM.

Lewis closes by sharing, “Beyond the ABC rule and the three Rs, finding the right life partner is important. I was fortunate to meet Sherene, a powerful woman, early in life. I am certain we wouldn’t be where we are without each other. The gift that keeps giving is our ability to stay on message and our shared vision. It is important to be on the same page. And not just on the same page but on the same page in the same book. Regarding my professional accomplishments, there is no woman behind the man; Sherene is the woman beside me, the man. We may need another “w” in a woman because she puts wow in the word, woman.”

THE FAMILY LEGACY

While their corporate careers have been remarkable, Derek and Sherene’s most incredible pride lies in their children, who have excelled in academics/sports, professional careers, and personal lives.

I WAS FORTUNATE TO MEET SHERENE, A POWERFUL WOMAN, EARLY IN LIFE. I AM CERTAIN WE WOULDN'T BE WHERE WE ARE WITHOUT EACH OTHER. THE GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING IS OUR ABILITY TO STAY ON MESSAGE AND OUR SHARED VISION. IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE ON THE SAME PAGE.

Devon, Jordan, and Kellan embody the values instilled in them by their parents. Derek states, “We have worked hard to deliver the best possible experiences for our kids. We are proud of what we built together as a team for them.”

Every bit the feminist, still Sherene transitioned from her role in corporate life to the role of a stay-at-home Mom. She shares, “I had to rediscover where I could use all the tools and resources I had acquired in corporate America and make those transferable to our home life. So, I became the CEO of Team Lewis.” Accordingly, Sherene converted the skills and talents developed through leadership roles at Taco Bell to her new role as a mom. She became active within the children’s schools, participating in fundraising committees, student activities, and sports.

Sherene adds, “I was an active parent to be close to the kids on campus. I made sure someone was always in the stands at their games. There were games that Derek couldn’t make, but he was there for at least 80% of their games. I wanted our children to know they always had our highest support. In his absence, I was ever present and his proxy support to them. Whether in the bleachers and stands, supporting them in the classroom, or traveling to sporting events and tournaments by car, my role became a position I cherished. My new normal became extremely gratifying.” Sherene continues, “As a young family, we experienced an aggressive travel schedule to effectively integrate corporate and personal needs. Our oldest son, Devon, played four sports at Lake Highland

Preparatory School in Orlando, Florida. Later, he attended Georgetown University on a lacrosse scholarship. Our daughter, Jordan, played collegiate basketball at the University of Alabama and Baylor. That required a lot of behind-the-scenes alignment of schedules. Of course, our youngest is at Hampton on a Division One scholarship to play basketball and major in Architecture. So there have always been many moving parts, especially since our children were born over 11 years.”

“Family is everything to us,” Derek says. “Watching our kids thrive and embrace the values we’ve instilled—hard work, faith, and perseverance—has been the most rewarding part of our journey.”

KEEPING IT REAL

The Lewises respect and participate in each other’s interests. Derek is an avid golfer, and Sherene plays both golf and tennis. The couple won the Black Enterprise Golf and Tennis Challenge in 2009 in their respective golf flights.

Sherene explains, “We share many of the same interests and invest in quality time for and with each other. If we go out to dinner, it doesn’t have to be fancy; it could be something like eating at the

bar. Or watching our favorite football or basketball game, or just having a glass of wine while watching Netflix. Derek might say, ‘I’m going to play golf. Do you want to ride along or play?’”

Sherene adds, “We’ve been raising kids for most of our marriage. So this is our empty nest year. We love to watch sporting events. We do getaway trips. We went to one of my bucket list items based on my love for tennis. Derek surprised me with a trip to Wimbledon two years ago. That was a fantastic trip. We’ve been to Super Bowls together. We were at the PGA Championships together and enjoyed sporting events among our shared interests. So that keeps us going, and we can speak the same language.”

When asked to offer his input on what keeps your marriage successful, Derek jokingly responds, “Oh, that’s easy; I simply agree with everything Sherene says.” He continues, “Seriously, there’s this foundation of trust and teamwork. We saw ourselves evolving from a couple of two, dating, getting married, forming a union as a team, and then building a family. As Sherene mentioned, we view ourselves as Team Lewis. We brand ourselves that way because that’s who we are. So, we have a

shared vision, which I feel has been critical. We haven’t experienced major conflicts about what we’re doing as a family, where we’re going, and how we will get there. It has been an aligned platform.”

Mr. Lewis adds, “We have enjoyed an aligned platform without conflict and turmoil. We’ve moved around quite a bit. Sherene and I were by ourselves on the road for many years. We are a team where both parties can improve each other. We learn from each other. We have helped each other become better at who we are: better people, parents, and spouses. I go back to the shared vision and our ability to help each other make each other better, which keeps us successful - sharing interests, having trust in one another, displaying teamwork, and above all, living and breathing a commitment to family. In the aggregate, that provides a solid foundation for our marriage and partnership.”

FUTURE VISION

Derek and Sherene’s entrepreneurial spirit has led them to their latest venture: bringing the Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks franchise to Orlando, Florida. Derek’s leadership roles at PepsiCo and Sherene’s contributions at Taco Bell have paved the way for this new business adventure. The couple’s Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks franchise, with 10 startup locations, will be a hub for connection and collaboration in Orlando. Asked why 10 franchises, Derek quips, “I can only make money if I get 10. One isn’t going to pay the bills, man.”

Derek and Sherene’s involvement with the Orlando Magic enterprise adds an exciting dimension to their venture as they collaborate on initiatives that bring together sports, food, and community engagement. Known for its authentic flavors and vibrant atmosphere, Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks has a loyal following. Derek and Sherene are thrilled to introduce it to a new audience in Central Florida.

“We’ve always been passionate about food and community,” Sherene says. “Big Dave’s aligns with our values and creates a space where people can come together and enjoy great food.”

We know the founders and owners exceptionally well—Derrick Hayes and his wife, Pinky Cole-Hayes. They are like family to us. When I was at PepsiCo, I worked with them, and we developed a great friendship and partnership during my years there. I supported their businesses significantly, especially during COVID. We took them on HBCU tours and sponsored their food trucks on campus during homecoming weeks. Sherene/I believe in their vision. We look at ourselves and see them as younger versions of us, but so much more. When Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks achieves national brand status, we can look back, smile, and say, ‘We were the first to help.”

“It’s a great, unique brand of food that I loved as a child, and I missed that experience for many years. So, in some ways, I’m going back to my childhood. Now, I can live out the rest of my life by eating cheesesteaks, selling them, and bringing excitement to others. We’re having a lot of fun with it. I get to create jobs and have a community impact.”

The Central Florida community has many reasons to be excited about the Lewis franchise with Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks. A location is already open in the Kia Center, where the Orlando Magic plays its home basketball games. The Lewises opened

another franchise location in Camping World Stadium during the annual Florida Classic Bowl Game. Stand-alone restaurant locations will begin opening in 2025.

Sherene is also celebrating the first anniversary of her sports and apparel company, Boujee Ts, LLC, which was an inspired idea she had after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Sherene, “It seems like dress codes changed due to the lockdown on work and society. I’ve been called “boujee,” my whole life, and wanted to produce a clothing line with a little bit of sass, a little bit extra. I thought of sequins and casual wear and then enveloped my passion, tennis. I’ve started my luxury brand, HRZZ, which is a slightly elevated casual look. The line includes comfort fabrics like spandex, elastic waistbands, ruffles, buttons, and zippers. The intent is to give the consumer an elevated classy or casual elegance feel.”

SURVIVE AND ADVANCE

As if their schedules weren’t complete, Derek is preparing to launch his memoir and debut book in January 2025. The highly anticipated work promises to offer readers a glimpse into his corporate journey, sharing lessons on leadership, resilience, and the importance of community. “Writing this book has been a labor of love,” Derek says. “It’s about inspiring others to pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles. If our story can encourage even one person to keep going, then it’s all been worth it.” Derek’s book, Survive and Advance: Lessons on Living a Life Without Compromise, is available for pre-order now on Amazon.com.

Lewis notes, “This memoir explores determination, resilience, and pursuing dreams. It tells my story of living unapologetically—without compromise, maintaining authenticity to achieve and strive for the highest success possible. It chronicles my ability to deal with issues and adversity but rise above that and not only get through it but advance through it. There’s a definite leveling-up process that I have experienced throughout my life through learned lessons, challenges, and struggles. The book will talk a lot

about the struggles and triumphs, but every chapter will offer readers a sense of hope, inspiration, and a sense of being authentic to themselves to achieve the highest level of success.

“As a young child, I never wanted to give up who I was and what I believed in. I love being Black and am proud of my culture. Fighting for people--all people--is who I was and continue to be. I wanted to achieve the goals I set for myself. I also wanted to improve surrounding circumstances and fighting chances for others to succeed, especially those who typically have been underrepresented in the workforce and the community.”

KEEPING THE FAITH

Everything hasn’t been picture-perfect for Derek and Sherene Lewis. In 2023, Derek was diagnosed with colon cancer. According to Sherene, “It was like a rock fell on us. He had just retired in December. And he would joke, ‘How many golf rounds can I get in now that I’m retired?’ We were thinking about all these trips we would take, and it was the diagnosis in April that set us back. We did not know much about colon cancer or its treatment. Derek’s faith helped reaffirm my faith. He didn’t have a weak moment. He didn’t fear that diagnosis. He went into surgery like it was, you know, he was going into a football game, had a game plan, and was ready to go.

“Derek’s faith elevated my faith. I was feeling weak and helpless, and I could not fathom what I would do without him. But he never spoke in terms of his cancer diagnosis being something that would separate us or take him away from our family. He looked at it as ‘it’s

LIFE IS ABOUT DESIGNING A FUTURE THAT REFLECTS WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU STAND FOR. THAT MEANS FAITH, LOVE, AND A COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING THE WORLD. WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED.

just something we must deal with. And God’s got us.’ When I started not just saying it—God’s got us— but believing it, I could better cope with the circumstances. Derek has been cancer-free for over a year, and God has been so good to us and our family. Our eldest son is now engaged, and we’re planning a wedding. Our daughter started a new career as an ESPN sports commentator. Our youngest is in college. I keep believing because God’s got us. We’ve always been committed to thinking he would care for us. And if you commit to that belief, that’s really what our faith is all about.”

Mr. Lewis adds, “I’ve had a spiritual connection with God since early in my life. I give him all the credit for where we are today. I do have questions like we all do when traumatic things happen in life: ‘Why did this happen? Why me? Why did I get cancer?’ Sometimes, people look at ‘bad’ things that happen in life as punishment. Truthfully, I used to have those thoughts in my mind for years, but I will make it through this traumatic event. I realize that this challenge and others are preparing me for something greater. I can now use my voice to help save other lives and

remind people of the importance of getting colonoscopies after 50 regularly. There’s no punishment, only an opportunity to use my experience, good or bad, to empower someone else.”

A LEGACY OF LOVE AND PURPOSE

As Derek and Sherene Lewis continue to build their legacy, they remain steadfast in their commitment to faith, family, business, and community. From a romantic beginning to corporate achievements, their children’s successes, and exciting new business ventures, their story is a testament to what’s possible when love and purpose guide the way. Their journey is far from over, and with the upcoming launch of Derek’s book, the grand opening of multiple Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks franchises in Central Florida, and Sherene’s expansion of her business, Boujee Ts, the Lewis family is poised to inspire even more people in the years to come. Sherene sums up their story beautifully: “Life is about designing a future that reflects who you are and what you stand for. That means faith, love, and a commitment to improving the world. We’re just getting started.”

Derek closes by saying, “Our journey has been about pushing boundaries, staying true to our values, and building a legacy we’re proud of. Sharing our story in this publication feels like the perfect fit.”

Caring Well

“CDEVOTIONS FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CAREGIVER

aregiving can be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. But it can also be one of the most rewarding. As you care for others, you must care for yourself. Caring Well provides caregivers with a framework for self-care. You are worth it. You need it.”~ Jeanne Porter King

ABOUT MY NEW BOOK

“A few years ago, while caring for my elderly mother, I learned that caregiving is a distinct type of leadership.

“Those who take on the mantle of caregiver for a family member or friend step into a role that requires leading a care process for loved ones who can no longer independently care for themselves. In addition to working in or running businesses, leading ministries at church, and serving in our communities, we routinely choose to care for loved ones in need. Caring for others is what we do.

“Yet, I know and experienced that caregivers must also care for ourselves. I learned that self-care must be “wholistic”–for our spirit, soul, and body.

“I wrote Caring Well: 90 Self-Care Devotions for the African American Caregiver to support caregivers like you and me, as caregiving for others is a core value of women in our culture. We take care of others within our families and communities. Yet I know men and women of all races who provide care for loved ones. Regardless of your circumstances or background, as a caregiver, you will benefit from this book as you learn to navigate between your caregiving role and taking care of yourself.

If you are a former, current, or potential caregiver, this book will provide you with inspiration, wisdom, and practical tools to care well. Caring well is about caring for ourselves while continuing to care for others.”

THE BLURB FOR CARING WELL

Who do you turn to when you have nothing left to give?

Caregiving is a core value in the African American culture. And African American women of faith often fill that role—for elderly parents, sick children, and other members of their community. Yet no one is fully prepared for the reality of disrupted schedules, unpredictable needs, and many sleepless nights that come with caregiving.

Jeanne Porter King shares 90 devotions written from her own experience as a caregiver for her mother to encourage you to take time to care for your whole self. In three sections that address caring for your spirit, soul, and body, each devotion ends with a reflection question and a self-care activity to help guide you on your caregiving journey.

Draw from the perfect source of strength by seeking Scripture and prayer to sustain you. Your faith is ready fuel for the selfcare you need as you look after others!

Dr. Julie Welborn, Associate Pastor, LaSalle Street Church Perfect Peace Consulting, LLC.

“As a Caregiver, retreat consultant, pastor, daughter, aunt, and friend wearing many hats, I found this book not only life-giving, but an opportunity to care for myself. Cynthia M. Harris

For Minister Cynthia M. Harris, ministry is not just a calling—it’s a way of life. As an ordained minister, Christian fiction author, professor, and mentor, she is dedicated to spreading God’s word through every available platform. Whether delivering a sermon, crafting compelling stories, or teaching theological principles, Minister Cynthia’s mission is to inspire faith and guide others toward God’s transformative power.

CALLED TO SERVE

“My call to ministry began with a deep desire to serve and connect with people on a spiritual level,” Minister Cynthia shared, reflecting on her multi-faceted journey. From her days as a young girl in Atlanta, Georgia, to earning her Master of Arts in Theological Studies and impacting lives globally, her path has been anything but ordinary. However, her leap into Christian Romance Fiction—a genre she felt divinely led to pursue—sparked both inspiration and controversy. “I remember sitting at the computer, hearing, ‘If you hide the power of God within the pages of a romance novel, people who might not otherwise walk through the doorway of a church will see the power of God in their lives.’”

The backlash she anticipated came quickly. Critics questioned her credibility as a minister, dismissing her work as a waste of talent. “‘Why are you wasting your God-given talent on fiction? And romance at that!’ they asked,” she recalled. Yet, Minister Cynthia stood firm in her conviction, knowing that her stories carried a deeper purpose. “Woven within the characters’ patterns was God’s hidden power,” she explained. Her novels create a gateway for readers—secular, unchurched, or believers alike—to encounter biblical principles of love, grace, and hope organically.

ROOTED IN FAITH

Minister Cynthia believes ministry isn’t confined to traditional spaces. With her profound understanding of theology and a storyteller’s heart, she co-founded T.O.S.O.T Ministries, an organization rooted in its motto: “Ministry is always required.” The name, an acronym for “The Other Side of Through,” reflects

the mission of empowering individuals to grow in their faith while navigating life’s challenges.

“T.O.S.O.T Ministries bridges the gap between theological education and real-life application,” Minister Cynthia explained. “We strive to make the message of Christ accessible to everyone—especially those who may never have walked into a church or considered traditional religious teachings.” Through mentorship, speaking engagements, and her acclaimed Christian novels, Minister Cynthia inspires people to deepen their spiritual lives and embrace faith in every aspect of their journey.

Daily, Minister Cynthia fulfills this mission through teaching, mentorship, and personal outreach. As the education director at her church, she ensures that programs reflect the ministry’s commitment to combining theological depth with practical impact. “I dedicate time to mentoring individuals, helping them grow in their understanding of Scripture and its application in their lives,” she shared. Her “Meet the Author” events—both virtual and in-person—allow readers to engage with her books’ themes and connect on a deeper level.

THE POWER OF STORYTELLING

Minister Cynthia’s novels are tools of ministry. Her The Other Side of Through series exemplifies her commitment to weaving biblical principles into engaging narratives. “Have you ever sat in church on Sunday morning, only to leave disappointed because you had no idea how to apply what you just heard to your life?” she asked. Her fiction seeks to bridge that gap, delivering spiritual truths in a way that resonates with everyday life.

The Valley of the Shadow of Death, the third installment in the series, explores themes of redemption, resilience, and faith amidst trials. “The journey into the lives of Talinda, Nevette, and the supporting cast continues to advance through a twisted maze riddled with suspense and anticipation,” Minister Cynthia described. “It shows how even the most robust mind, pushed to its limits, can become fragile to the point of thoughts of suicide. It’s a call for readers to reflect on the consequences of their actions and the redemptive power of God’s grace.”

Through her writing, Minister Cynthia doesn’t shy away from addressing real-life struggles—broken marriages, strained relationships, and personal failures. She uses these challenges to illustrate the gospel’s transformative power, inspiring readers to seek healing, redemption, and hope. “Through fiction writing, I dared to believe that marriages would be mended, young girls would choose to remain virtuous, and men would rise to become mighty men of valor,” she shared.

NAVIGATING MULTIPLE ROLES WITH GRACE

Balancing ministry, writing, and teaching is no easy feat, but Minister Cynthia seamlessly integrates her roles to create a cohesive impact. “My ministry informs my writing, and my writing, in turn, enhances my teaching,” she said. As a professor of Master of Arts in Theological Studies, she bridges academic theology with real-world faith application, helping her students develop a deeper love for their calling.

Her daily routine begins with personal time in the Word and prayer, setting a

spiritual foundation for her work. “I start each day with time in prayer, not for sermon preparation, but for spiritual nourishment,” she explained. This intentionality extends to her relationships, where she values accountability and encouragement. “Balancing ministry and family life is essential. I set clear boundaries to ensure that family remains a priority, allowing me to serve from a place of balance.”

Minister Cynthia shared that she would begin her PhD journey in Practical Theology in January 2025.

BUILDING A LEGACY THROUGH FAITH AND FICTION

As a mentor, Minister Cynthia is deeply invested in the spiritual and personal development of others. Her advice to aspiring authors and ministers is clear: “Be consistent and genuine. Readers want to know who you are.” She encourages them to remain rooted in their calling, prioritizing their relationship with God above all else. “This is not a career path for personal ambition or recognition; it’s a response to God’s calling on your life.”

Through her work with T.O.S.O.T Ministries, Minister Cynthia is laying the groundwork for a lasting legacy. She envisions a future where her novels, educational programs, and mentorship continue to transform lives. “I pray that I will have set a foundation for others to emulate, ensuring that my core values on Christ live through my work,” she shared.

Upcoming projects include part three of her Temptation series, The Weight of Temptation, and her first solo non-fiction work, Purpose By Design. “Purpose By Design is a gospel-based guide to understanding the role that others play in our lives,” she explained. Additionally, T.O.S.O.T Ministries is set to launch a Bible study portal, offering courses designed to deepen participants’ understanding of Scripture, theology, and leadership.

REDEEMED TO REDEEM OTHERS

Minister Cynthia’s journey reflects a life dedicated to serving others through faith, education, and creativity. Her books minister to hearts, her teachings inspire minds, and her ministry transforms lives. “Ministry is not confined to a pulpit,” she affirmed. “It’s about living out faith in every sphere of life and making Christ’s love accessible to all.”

As she continues to write, mentor, and teach, Minister Cynthia’s mission remains unwavering: to empower others to grow in their faith and to show that even in the darkest moments, God’s grace can redeem and transform.

Genstacia Bull

WRITING, COACHING, AND LIVING A LIFE OF PURPOSE

When Genstacia Bull shares her story, her journey reflects perseverance, faith, and a profound dedication to living out her divine purpose. As a Christian author, editor, and writing coach, Genstacia’s passion for storytelling is intertwined with her unshakable belief in the transformative power of God. Through her books, mentoring, and career as a communications consultant, she has impacted lives across generations and communities, demonstrating that writing can be both a calling and a mission field.

Born with a natural gift for expression, Genstacia’s writing journey began with a love for words that extended from her teenage years into adulthood. “Writing has always come naturally to me,” she reflects. “I can express myself so much better when writing than speaking.” Her journey to authorship wasn’t just about finding her voice—it was about allowing God to speak through her, bringing encouragement and hope to readers worldwide. Today, as the author of impactful devotionals like Unwind with God and Intimate Evening with God, she continues to create spaces where faith and introspection converge.

A MULTIFACETED

CAREER ROOTED IN FAITH

Genstacia’s professional journey spans over fifteen years, marked by a dedication to impactful communication and stakeholder engagement. As a Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Consultant, she has contributed significantly to project-based initiatives in housing regeneration, transport planning, and strategy. Her expertise lies in stakeholder mapping, analyzing area demographics, and crafting bespoke communication strategies to connect residents, businesses, and institutions.

“My role often involves bringing together diverse groups to ensure smooth

implementation,” she explains. “It’s about understanding the community and facilitating dialogue.” This ability to bridge gaps between stakeholders reflects her natural talent for communication, a skill that complements her calling as a writer and mentor.

Genstacia’s educational path is equally inspiring. Although her initial goal was to follow in her father’s footsteps as an accountant, she eventually recognized that her true calling lay elsewhere. After qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant and spending years in finance, she courageously pivoted to pursue her passion for communication and writing. “I realized that finance was not my natural bent, even though I was reasonably good at it,” she recalls.

THE AUTHOR’S PATH

Genstacia’s journey as an author began with a love for storytelling and a desire to share her reflections on faith. Her debut book, Unwind with God, emerged from her daily journaling, where she captured insights from Scripture and life lessons. “Writing that book was a byproduct of my quiet time with God,” she shares. Initially released as an ebook through Westbow Press, the overwhelming demand for a paperback edition led her to self-publish a hard copy using Kindle Create.

Her latest work, Intimate Evening with God, serves as a sequel to her first book and deepens the devotional experience. Featuring scripture, exposition, prayer, and journaling prompts, it invites readers to engage intimately with their faith. “I learned the importance of consistency with God while writing this book,” Genstacia says. “When He challenges me to do something, it’s not for me to figure out all the details but simply to obey.”

Through her writing, Genstacia hopes readers will grasp the significance of spending time with God and embracing a lifestyle of obedience. “It’s the key to a fulfilling life,” she emphasizes.

INSPIRATION FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

As a mentor and writing coach, Genstacia

encourages aspiring authors to overcome their fears and start writing. “Don’t be afraid to write; it doesn’t have to be perfect,” she advises. “Practice regularly, learn your craft, and connect with other writers.” Her journey from writing church magazine articles and book reviews to becoming a published author exemplifies her belief in the power of persistence and continuity.

For Genstacia, the writing process is deeply spiritual. “When I’m spending time with God, the words flow easily— it’s like He’s writing through me,” she

explains. She describes her method as one of freedom and refinement, allowing ideas to “marinate” before editing rigorously. Her approach underscores the importance of drawing from a well-nurtured spiritual foundation, as “you cannot pour from an empty cup.”

SERVING OTHERS

Beyond her writing, Genstacia is passionate about working with children and imparting knowledge. She has volunteered as a reading coordinator, helping children who speak English as a second language or who need confidence-building support. Her years as a Sunday School teacher and her current involvement in her church’s media team highlight her commitment to serving her community.

“I’ve always loved sharing information and seeing others grow,” she says.

This dedication extends to her writing, which she views as a ministry. “Writing isn’t just about words on a page—it’s about connecting with readers on a spiritual level and encouraging them to deepen their relationship with God.”

OVERCOMING

CHALLENGES WITH FAITH

Genstacia’s journey has not been without its challenges. Whether it was facing repeated failures in her final accounting exams or struggling to pass her driving test, she has learned the value of perseverance and a renewed mindset. “Failure is often a steppingstone to success,” she reflects. “I had to change my perception and confront the mental barriers that were holding me back.”

To thrive during challenging times, Genstacia relies on her faith and a positive mindset. “Stay away from negative thoughts and people,” she advises. “Sur-

round yourself with possibility by reading positive books or learning from those who have succeeded.” She finds strength in Scripture and resources like John Maxwell’s Success is a Choice, which keeps her accountable and motivated.

Bridging Art, Life, And Film

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH NINA YONG

Born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Colorado Springs and Germany, Nina Yong’s life has been shaped by art, culture, and ambition. “I’ve always lived an art-based life,” she shares. From participating in drill dance teams to playing musical instruments, drawing, painting, and sculpting, Nina’s early years laid the foundation for her artistic inclinations. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu with an associate’s degree in Occupational Science, Nina’s career path began in culinary arts before her passion for the film industry took center stage.

PASSION FOR ACTING

For Nina, acting is more than a profession—it’s a creative outlet and a thrilling challenge. “Acting and being an actress is fun to me,” she explains. “I love that I can take a script, read about a character, then figure out how to bring this character to life and make her believable or relatable for the audience to either love or hate.” This passion for bringing characters to life has fueled her career in the entertainment industry, where she has worked on various projects, including roles in Girl in the Basement, Saints and Sinners, and The Family Business.

One of her most impactful experiences was her role in Legendary, a short film and music video with Tyrese Gibson and CeeLo Green, which highlighted the ongoing fight against police brutality. “It was something bigger than just acting—bigger than myself,” Nina reflects. “I felt a presence there that day, something really powerful, and an experience I will never forget.”

STEPPING BEHIND THE SCENES

Nina’s curiosity and love of learning drew her to producing. “Producing started when I realized I wanted to learn what goes on behind the scenes,” she says. “I’m a student at heart, so I figured if I learn everything that goes into making a film, it can only make me a better actress.” Her dedication to mastering the craft of filmmaking has expanded her skill set and deepened her appreciation for storytelling in all its forms.

PRODUCING STARTED WHEN I REALIZED I WANTED TO LEARN WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES. I’M A STUDENT AT HEART, SO I FIGURED IF I LEARN EVERYTHING THAT GOES INTO MAKING A FILM, IT CAN ONLY MAKE ME A BETTER ACTRESS.

NAVIGATING LIFE’S CHALLENGES

Behind Nina’s professional success lies a story of resilience and determination. At 18, she became a mother and was diagnosed with cancer just three months later. “I was told if I was lucky, I might make it to 22,” she recalls. After an 11year battle, she was declared cancer-free in 2015, only to be diagnosed with a rare and incurable brain disease later that year. These experiences plunged her into a deep depression, leading her to take a step back from her career to focus on her mental health.

“I took a break from everything for a while, enrolled in therapy, and began working on me,” Nina shares. “Now I’m doing much better and looking forward to everything coming my way.” Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of prioritizing self-care.

BALANCING LIFE AND AMBITION

As a mother, wife, and grandmother, Nina acknowledges the challenges of balancing her personal and professional life. “The real and raw answer is there is no balance,” she admits. “Something is always going to fall short of my attention.” Her strategy is to focus on what she can control, committing only to what she has time for and trusting that “anything truly for me, God will make sure I’m in alignment to receive it.”

Nina remains driven by the endless opportunities the entertainment industry offers. “There’s still so much I want to accomplish, so many other actors and directors I want to work with, and roles I haven’t gotten the chance to play,” she says. Her motivation lies in staying ready for when those opportunities arise.

SELF-CARE AND HEALING

Understanding the importance of selfcare has been a crucial part of Nina’s journey. “My self-care routine is about taking care of me first, loving me first,” she shares. She believes in natural healing and ongoing therapy, emphasizing that healing is a continuous journey. “I am responsible for my own happiness,” she adds.

INSPIRATIONS AND ASPIRATIONS

Nina’s career is fueled by her desire to work with inspiring actors and directors. “I still want to do Law & Order: SVU—I love Chief Olivia Benson—and my dream role is to work alongside Samuel L. Jackson,” she says. When selecting projects, creativity and message are her guiding principles. “If I like the script, there’s a good chance I’ll do it. If I don’t, then I’ll pass. Knowing when to say no is a powerful thing in this industry.”

Her journey has been shaped by her agent, Melissa Yu, whom she describes as a mentor and advocate. “Loyalty is hard to find in this industry,” Nina explains. “Melissa fights hard for me, listens to me, and gives honest, raw feedback.” She also credits her mother and husband as her biggest supporters, describing them as her rock.

To those looking to break into the entertainment industry, Nina advises, “Know your ‘why’ and hold on to it during your

journey. The journey will be more rewarding than the destination.”

LOOKING AHEAD

As Nina continues to build her career, she is excited about the projects and opportunities on the horizon. “Even though I’ve been doing this for over a decade and have lots of projects under my belt, I’m just getting started!” she says. “I love acting and all that it embodies, and I won’t stop until my name is placed among the greats.”

Whether acting on screen, producing behind the scenes, or inspiring others with her journey, Nina is dedicated to leaving a lasting impact in the world of entertainment and beyond. As she continues to pursue her dreams, she remains a shining example of resilience, passion, and the transformative power of the arts.

From Stuck To Unstoppable

C. ERIC COLLIER’S BLUEPRINT FOR

CREATING A LIFE OF PURPOSE, PASSION, AND FULFILLMENT

C.Eric Collier, widely known as the “Mayor of Motivation,” has become a guiding light for individuals seeking to unleash their potential and achieve greatness. As a motivational speaker and host of The Momentum Shift Podcast and Radio Show, Collier’s journey highlights resilience, self-belief, and the transformative power of embracing change.

THE FOUNDATION OF RESILIENCE

Born and raised in Danville, Illinois, Collier’s early life was marked by challenges that required adaptability and perseverance. Reflecting on his childhood, he recalls, “At the age of five, I learned to adapt and just keep moving forward.” After his parents’ divorce, his mother worked tirelessly to support her children, instilling in them a drive to succeed despite the odds. “My mom went from cleaning houses to leading the housing projects with the Housing Authority, all without a degree,” he says. “She was my first motivational coach and teacher.”

Growing up in a blended family brought its own set of challenges. “High school was a tough time,” Collier admits. “We had to find our place in a family dynamic where there wasn’t really a place for us. My brother and I relied on each other to grow and move forward.” Amidst these struggles, sports became an anchor. “Baseball was my way out,” he shares, highlighting how his passion for the game shaped his early ambitions.

After high school, Collier joined the military, embarking on a journey of personal growth and discovery. His time in the armed forces reinforced his belief in discipline and self-reliance, qualities that would later define his approach to motivational speaking and coaching.

THE MAYOR OF MOTIVATION

Collier’s charismatic personality and ability to connect with others earned him the nickname “Mayor of Motivation.” Initially bestowed by coworkers who observed his natural ability to uplift those around him, the title stuck as he transitioned into mentoring and speaking. “I want to see people win,” Collier explains. “It’s about

helping them become the best version of themselves and experience the things they never thought possible.”

As a certified DiSC Behavioral Assessment facilitator, Collier helps individuals identify their strengths, weaknesses, and communication styles. “Self-awareness is key,” he emphasizes. “When you know who you are, it leads to better connections and ultimately, a more fulfilling life.”

TURNING CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES

Collier’s philosophy of momentum shifting is rooted in his own experiences of adversity. He describes a particularly challenging period when he was laid off for 352 days. “It was the toughest time for us,” he recalls. “I couldn’t control everything, but I focused on what I could control and kept pushing.” This mindset became his mantra: “Just keep pushing because nobody’s going to do it for you.”

THE ONLY REASON I’M HERE IS BECAUSE GOD HAS GUIDED ME. EVERY CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY HAS BEEN A PART OF HIS PLAN TO HELP ME GROW AND SERVE OTHERS.

Through perseverance, Collier found opportunities to grow and transform his life. He joined Les Brown’s Power Voice training program, which he credits with honing his speaking skills and launching his career as a motivational speaker. “That was my moment,” he says. “I realized I could inspire and motivate others while fulfilling my purpose.”

Collier’s concept of a momentum shift resonates deeply with his audience. “Momentum is an energy shift,” he explains. “It’s about going from stuck to moving forward, getting victories that build confidence and drive.” He emphasizes the importance of celebrating small wins as steppingstones to larger successes.

THE MOMENTUM SHIFT PODCAST

The Momentum Shift Podcast and Radio Show serves as a platform for Collier to share his insights and connect with a global audience. The podcast addresses themes of resilience, self-improvement, and overcoming obstacles. “The podcast is about helping people shift their energy and mindset to create change in their lives,” says Collier. “It’s for anyone feeling stuck and looking for a way forward.”

Through interviews and personal reflections, Collier encourages listeners to embrace uncertainty and take steps toward their goals. “You don’t need all the answers,” he declares. “Just start. The process takes as long as it takes, but every step forward counts.”

LEADERSHIP AND LEGACY

Collier’s military background shaped his understanding of leadership and its impact. “Leadership is about influence,” he states. “You don’t have to be in a position of power to lead. True leaders inspire and guide others by their actions.”

He is passionate about developing leaders who can effect positive change in their communities and organizations. “Leadership starts with belief,” he asserts. “When you’re secure in who you are and what you stand for, you can inspire others to follow.”

Collier’s approach to leadership emphasizes self-awareness and communication. “Understanding how people communicate and what they value is essential,” he says. He also encourages individuals to embrace their unique leadership styles, whether they are vocal visionaries or quiet influencers.

FAITH AND RESILIENCE

Faith plays a central role in Collier’s life and work. “The only reason I’m here is because God has guided me,” he shares. “Every challenge and opportunity has been a part of His plan to help me grow and serve others.”

Collier’s faith inspires his belief in the transformative power of adversity. “When you’re stuck in a difficult situation, it’s because there’s something you need to learn to move to the next level,” he explains. This perspective helps him remain focused and motivated, even during tough times.

INSPIRING A MOVEMENT

Collier’s vision for the future is ambitious and purpose driven. He is currently working on his book, The Art of Not Having a Clue but Doing It Anyway, which explores the power of momentum and overcoming

self-doubt. “My goal is to help 5 million people change their lives,” he says. “If I can inspire others to take action and create positive change, I’ve fulfilled my mission.”

In addition to his writing, Collier plans to expand his speaking engagements and continue growing the Momentum Shift Podcast and Radio Show. He also hopes to collaborate with other leaders and organizations to amplify his message and reach.

Collier’s journey from a small-town kid in Illinois to a global motivational speaker is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. His work inspires individuals to break free from self-imposed limitations, embrace change, and pursue their dreams with determination.

“Life is about choices,” Collier says. “You can choose to stay stuck, or you can choose to move forward. The power to change is within you.” Through his words and actions, Collier is proving that a single momentum shift can transform lives and create a ripple effect of positivity and growth.

DJ Nicholas N

A TRAILBLAZING VOICE IN CHRISTIAN REGGAE DANCEHALL

icholas Vacianna Eccleston, globally recognized as DJ Nicholas, is a trailblazer in the Christian Reggae Dancehall genre. For over two decades, his electrifying performances and faith-infused lyrics have inspired audiences across the globe. From his humble beginnings in Kingston, Jamaica, to becoming an internationally acclaimed gospel artist, DJ Nicholas has carved out a unique path, blending his musical talents with his faith to inspire audiences. His recent interview with VBD Magazine offered an in-depth look into his journey, showcasing his authenticity, creativity, and passion for ministry.

A LIFE TRANSFORMED

Born in the vibrant community of Meadowbrook, Kingston, DJ Nicholas was immersed in a culture of music and faith from an early age. “My mom would visit several different churches and made sure we prayed regularly,” he recalled during his VBD Magazine interview. “She was a cabaret singer before I was born, and her love for music left a strong impression on me.”

As a teenager, DJ Nicholas began exploring his musical talents, heavily influenced by the dancehall genre and artists like Bounty Killer. “I started writing songs after hearing Bounty Killer,” he shared. “At that point, I wasn’t thinking about Christianity; my lyrics were about guns, girls, and marijuana.” His exploration of Rastafarianism and rebellious pursuits marked a tumultuous phase in his life.

However, everything changed when he encountered the scripture Acts 4:12: “There is no other name given among men whereby mankind can be saved except the name of Jesus.” This profound moment of clarity became the catalyst for his spiritual awakening. “That scripture convicted me,” DJ Nicholas explained.

I TRY TO STAY CONSISTENT WITH MY WORKOUT AT THE GYM. AND SPIRITUALLY, I SPEND TIME IN GOD’S WORD. IT’S WHAT FUELS ME ON AND OFF THE STAGE.

“It led me to realize that Jesus is the only way to a relationship with the Creator.”

This transformation saw DJ Nicholas abandon his Rastafarian beliefs and rebellious lifestyle, embracing a mission to use his musical gifts to glorify God. “Why should I throw away this talent that God has given me when I can use it to write scripturally sound songs?” he said.

A UNIQUE MUSICAL MINISTRY

With a blend of reggae, dancehall, and hiphop beats infused with gospel messages, DJ Nicholas created a unique musical ministry that resonates with audiences worldwide. His high-energy performances and scripturally rooted lyrics have become a hallmark of his artistry.

“The type of music I do works best outdoors,” he explained. “The are no challenges with acoustics and sound reflecting off walls. Caribbean audiences, especially in Jamaica and Guyana, are some of my favorites to perform for because they’re so receptive and responsive.”

DJ Nicholas’s discography reflects his growth and creativity. His albums include On the Shout (2005), Louder Than Ever (2008), School of Volume (2011), The Audiologist (2017), and Abnormal Decibels (2021). Each release showcases his ability to merge rhythmic innovation with powerful gospel messages. Songs like “Cut it Off,” “Divine Mathematics,” and “Things Already Betta” have become fan favorites, cementing his place as a leading voice in gospel music.

Collaborations have also played a pivotal role in his career. DJ Nicholas has worked with renowned gospel artists, including Todd Dulaney, Anthony Brown, and Deitrick Haddon. His performance at BET’s Celebration of Gospel in 2016 alongside Haddon remains a career highlight.

BALANCING FAMILY AND MINISTRY

DJ Nicholas’s commitment to his faith extends beyond music. A devoted husband and father, he considers his family the cornerstone of his ministry. “We’ve been married for 19 years, and it’s been

an incredible journey,” he shared. “My wife would like to have more kids, but I think two are perfect—one boy and one girl. I’m blessed.”

Balancing a demanding music career with family life requires careful planning. DJ Nicholas frequently incorporates his family into his ministry, ensuring they remain connected to his work. “When I’m performing locally, they’ll often come with me,” he noted. “If they can’t, they’ll watch online or on Zoom.”

Preparation for his dynamic performances involves both physical and spiritual discipline. “I try to stay consistent with my workout at the gym,” he explained. “And spiritually, I spend time in God’s Word. It’s what fuels me on and off the stage.”

OUTREACH AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

DJ Nicholas’s ministry extends far beyond music. He is actively involved in community outreach through initiatives like “A Betta Tomorrow,” which he helped launch in Montego Bay, Jamaica. “It’s about more than just singing and preaching,” he said. “We meet physical needs by distributing food, school supplies, and other essentials. It’s about making a tangible impact.”

He also channels his entrepreneurial spirit into Bible Addict Apparel, a Christian clothing line. Featuring items like hoodies and T-shirts, the brand not only spreads gospel messages but also supports his outreach initiatives. “It’s one addiction we don’t need rehab for,” he said with a smile.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

DJ Nicholas’s journey has not been without challenges. Criticism from within the Christian community has also been a recurring challenge. “Not everyone appreciates or understands my style of ministry,” he acknowledged. “But I’ve learned to stay focused on my calling. You can’t let criticism deter you if you’re convicted about what God has called you to do.”

One setback was the loss of his Facebook and Instagram accounts to hackers, an event that wiped out years of connections, content, and outreach. “That was a tough season,” he admitted. “But it reminded me that God is bigger than social media. It pushed me to rely even more on faith and trust in His plan, knowing that no

platform can limit the impact of a calling rooted in God’s purpose.”

LOOKING AHEAD

DJ Nicholas plans to launch his own outreach initiative in Jamaica in 2025, further expanding his impact. Additionally, he is pursuing further education with plans to enroll in a graduate program. “I want to become a Physician Assistant or Doctor of Physical Therapy,” he revealed. “It’ll provide financial stability and allow me to continue my ministry with greater flexibility.”

He is also gearing up for his next album, which promises to continue his tradition of delivering innovative and inspiring gospel music. “I’m excited about what’s next,” he said. “Whether it’s writing new songs, performing, or serving through outreach, I’m committed to doing what God has called me to do.”

Despite his success, DJ Nicholas remains humble and grounded. “On stage, I’m authoritative and energetic because that’s what the music requires,” he shared. “But offstage, I’m just a reserved, easygoing person. I remind myself daily that I’m simply a vessel.”

VBD Magazine is honored to feature DJ Nicholas, celebrating his extraordinary contributions to gospel music and ministry. As he continues to inspire audiences worldwide, one thing is certain: his journey is far from over.

Dean Brown

THE VOICE BEHIND LIVE 11 RADIO AND A CHAMPION FOR CARIBBEAN CULTURE

Dean Brown, affectionately known as DJ Dean, is a key advocate for integrating gospel music with the vibrant rhythms of Caribbean culture, creating a platform that inspires and uplifts audiences. Through his roles as a Radio Program Director, Host, and Disc Jockey, DJ Dean has combined his passion for music with his faith-driven mission to share the gospel. From his formative years in Montego Bay, Jamaica, to his influential work in Tallahassee, Florida, he has championed a fresh and inclusive approach to Christian radio, offering a voice to underrepresented artists and fostering a sense of community through music.

A LOVE FOR MUSIC

Dean’s journey began in Jamaica, where music was an intrinsic part of life. “Music was part of learning to count, learning the alphabet, reading, and almost everything we did,” Dean reminisced. He vividly recalls his fascination with cassette tapes and vinyl records, where the process of playing music seemed almost magical. “When you put a cassette in and saw the wheels spinning while music flowed from the tape, it was an eye-opener,” he explained. “Plus, my mother dancing to the music always filled our home with an infectious joy.”

The sound systems in Jamaica, with towering speakers and electrifying rhythms, left an indelible mark on young Dean.

“People would gather, dressed to the nines, to listen and dance to the songs from the sound systems. It was another level for me, and I was hooked,” he said. This passion ignited a journey of self-teaching and relentless practice, eventually leading to his first set of equipment and the beginning of his DJ career.

A LEAP OF FAITH

After graduating from high school in Jamaica, Dean moved to Florida to pursue higher education, earning a degree in Accounting from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. While building his life and family in Tallahassee, his love for music remained constant. Dean recognized a significant gap in local radio programming that authentically reflected Caribbean culture. “There was a need for proper programming that represented who we are,” he shared.

Initially, Dean found opportunities to DJ at local stations but faced limitations in creative freedom. “Stations didn’t want me to play gospel music, which is a big part of our culture as Disc Jockeys,” he explained. Frustrated but spiritually renewed, Dean took a leap of faith, guided by an idea revealed to him during a period of fasting. That idea became Live 11 Radio, an internet radio station with a mission to win souls for Christ.

LIVE 11 RADIO

Dean describes the creation of Live 11 Radio as a profound spiritual calling. “It felt like I was pregnant and had to give birth,” he said. Despite facing countless obstacles and moments of doubt, Dean pressed forward. “This wasn’t about my personal desire—it was about fulfilling God’s mission,” he emphasized.

The name “Live 11” carries deep meaning: “The 11 stands for one-on-one with God, and ‘Live’ symbolizes both living life and being live on air,” Dean explained. Unlike traditional Christian stations that cater primarily to believers, Live 11 Radio is designed to reach the unchurched with diverse programming that points listeners toward Jesus Christ.

The station’s innovative approach includes promoting unsigned artists, a vision Dean

credits to divine inspiration. “God said, ‘Give the unsigned a platform to express the gifts I gave them,’” he recounted. Through Live 11 Radio, talented but often overlooked musicians, producers, and artists now have an opportunity to share their ministry with a global audience. “It’s incredible to see the gifts God placed in them released on the airwaves,” Dean said proudly.

CHAMPIONING CARIBBEAN CULTURE

Dean’s Caribbean heritage is woven into the fabric of Live 11 Radio’s programming. He believes reggae and other Caribbean genres hold a unique power to uplift and inspire. “Reggae invokes positive emotions and carries a rich cultural history,” he shared. By incorporating these sounds, Live 11 Radio provides a platform for artists staying true to the foundational values of the genre while promoting a positive, Christ-centered message.

Dean’s involvement extends beyond radio. For over 12 years, he has volunteered with 5F Farm, a Caribbean cultural festival that promotes family bonding and gospel-centered entertainment. “Being part of this event brings families together and allows me to infuse the mix of gospel and reggae, ensuring Christ’s message reaches everyone,” he explained.

A MISSION-DRIVEN APPROACH

Every aspect of Live 11 Radio reflects Dean’s dedication to God’s vision. “Our slogan is ‘Where music lives, but you live also,’ emphasizing the personal relationship God desires with each listener,” Dean shared. Whether through programming decisions, host selection, or syndicated partnerships, faith remains his guiding principle. “Faith is the constant guide for what to do, how to do it, and with whom to do it,” he said.

Dean also recognizes the immense power of music to influence emotions and create connections. “Music is a vehicle with a message that can change moods for better or worse,” he said. “As DJs and hosts, we have a responsibility to make our listeners’ days better through the music we play.”

Dean’s advice to aspiring DJs and radio hosts is grounded in passion and

purpose. “Love what you do and carve a path others can follow,” he said. He encourages them to view music as more than entertainment. “Music is a powerful tool to create positive environments and build community bonds,” he explained. “Your energy and selections can change someone’s entire day—use that responsibility wisely.”

LEAVING A LEGACY

“There were many moments of discouragement, but something in me always overcame the desire to give up,” Dean revealed. Today, Live 11 Radio is a testament to his perseverance and faithfulness. “It’s incredible to see how God uses this platform to reach people,” he said.

As for the future, Dean remains open to God’s plans. “Only God knows what’s next,” he said. “I’m excited about new programs, opportunities to syndicate our

content, and seeing how Live 11 Radio continues to grow.” He views every open door, including this interview with VBD Magazine, as confirmation that the station remains part of God’s greater plan.

Dean’s impact extends far beyond the airwaves. Through Live 11 Radio, he has cultivated a community of listeners and artists who share his vision for meaningful, Christ-centered entertainment. His dedication to fostering relationships and uplifting voices reflects his belief that “relationships are the true currency.”

As Dean continues his journey, his legacy is one of faith, innovation, and cultural pride. Live 11 Radio is a movement, a space where music lives, and individuals are inspired to live fully in their purpose.

Marcus Jordan

INSPIRING A GENERATION THROUGH GOSPEL MUSIC AND MINISTRY

As a preacher, former police officer, gospel recording artist, songwriter, and producer, Marcus Jordan exemplifies a life where service, creativity, and purpose intersect harmoniously. His journey, a blend of trials and triumphs, showcases the impact of perseverance, faith, and commitment to fulfilling his God-given calling.

In an unforgettable and deeply moving interview with VBD Magazine, Marcus offered a heartfelt glimpse into the experiences that shaped his extraordinary life and career. From discovering his divine gift for music as a child to navigating the pivotal crossroads of his ministry, Marcus shared his journey with striking authenticity, humility, and fervent passion. For Marcus, success transcends accolades and recognition; it is rooted in the lives he touches, the hope he inspires, and the glory he brings to God in every endeavor.

MUSICAL CALLING

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Marcus’ love for music was evident from an early age. The chart-topping and award-winning artist and songwriter began serving local churches at the age of seven, after convincing his mother that he could play the piano. “She didn’t believe me,” he recalls with a smile. But after three weeks of persistent pleas, Marcus was given a chance to prove himself at church. “Thank God for divine intervention,” he says. When he began to play, his mother cried, overwhelmed by the gift God had placed in her son.

This gift quickly blossomed. Marcus’ talent earning him opportunities to work with notable names in the music industry, including Matthew Knowles, Founder of Music World Entertainment. As a musician in the house band for Music World Entertainment, Marcus

IT’S ABOUT CREATING MUSIC THAT PEOPLE CAN SING ALONG TO, WHETHER THEY’RE IN THEIR CAR, CLEANING THE HOUSE, OR WORSHIPPING IN CHURCH.

was blessed to accompany several of its notable R&B and Gospel artists, including Solange Knowles. It was Solange’s encouragement that inspired Marcus to pursue a career as a solo artist. “She told me to up my writing game,” Marcus shares. “I took that advice seriously, and it has shaped how I approach my music to this day.”

MUSIC IN MINISTRY

Despite the early promise, Marcus faced significant challenges. When the band he was part of was dropped by Music World Entertainment, Marcus found himself at a crossroads. “I didn’t have a Plan B,” he admits. “I thought I’d be able to buy my mom a house. It was devastating.” However, Marcus refused to let this setback define him. Leaning on his faith, he persevered, eventually finding his footing as a solo artist.

Marcus debuted his first EP, I Can, marking the beginning of his journey as a gospel artist performing at churches and events across Houston, Texas. While his focus remained on his burgeoning music career, Marcus embraced a higher calling when he succeeded his father as pastor of the Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, now known as Praise City Church. As his ministry flourished and his musical influence grew, Marcus felt compelled to serve in another impactful way. In 2017, after earning an associate degree and graduating from the University of Houston’s Downtown Police Academy, he joined the Houston Police Department, bringing his dedication to faith and service to one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the United States.

In 2021, Marcus released his debut fulllength album Call On the Name. The album debuted at #3 on iTunes’ Christian/ Gospel chart, bolstered by the chart-topping gospel radio single and title-track.

THE WHOLE ALBUM IS COMPLETE AND READY FOR MIXING AND MASTERING. I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE WORLD TO HEAR WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN ME.

Produced by iconic musical mastermind Rodrick “Bubba” Dowling, the single soared to #1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart and spent 42+ weeks in Top 30. The song peaked at #17 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart and earned a #32 position on Billboard’s 2022 Year-End Gospel Airplay Songs chart. In 2023, Call On the Name was still in rotation, ending that year as #27 on Billboard’s Year-End Gospel Airplay Songs.

“That song came from a deeply personal place,” Marcus reveals. After battling a life-threatening case of COVID-19 and spending two weeks in the ICU, he wrote the song as a declaration of faith and gratitude. “The song was initially for me,” he says. “It was a reminder to continuously call on God’s name, even in the darkest times.”

In April 2023 Marcus released the upbeat, high-energy gospel-pop track “Dance”, earning him a second Top 20 record on Billboard’s Gospel chart. Later that year, Marcus released the six-track EP My Life. The impressive release debuted at #4 on iTunes Christian chart and #53 on the All-Genre chart. The title-track was featured on Apple Music’s Gospel Best New Songs and New in Gospel playlist. A testament to the impact of his artistry, Marcus’ music reached the impressive milestone of 1 million all-time streams on Apple Music in January 2024.

For Marcus, songwriting is a deeply spiritual process. “My prayer is always, ‘Let me hear and know Your heart so I can reach the hearts of others,’” he shares. He often starts with the chorus, crafting songs that are easy for listeners to connect with. “It’s about creating music that people can sing along to, whether they’re in their car, cleaning the house, or worshipping in church.

“Knowing that my music is touching lives and encouraging people to trust God—that’s everything,” Marcus says. “Today, I’m celebrating my music being in the Top 20 on Billboard. God is so good. My journey has been nothing short of amazing, and I’m grateful for every step of it.”

In addition to creating songs that are saturating radio airwaves, he has ministered on iconic stages at the Essence Music Festival and the Stellar Gospel Music Awards, and has shared the stage with the likes of Jonathan McReynolds, JJ Hairston, Deitrick Haddon, James Fortune, and Maurette Brown Clark.

BALANCING ROLES

Marcus’s calling extends far beyond music. As a former police officer and now a pastor, his life’s work is centered on serving others. “Being a pastor and a police officer taught me to love people,” he explains. “Both roles require treating people with dignity, respect, and integrity. It’s about holding the sanctity of life in high regard and shepherding others with grace.”

His background in law enforcement has deeply influenced his ministry. “You learn to listen and connect with people from all walks of life,” he says. “As a public servant, whether in uniform or behind the pulpit, the goal is the same: to help people and point them toward hope. The church loves seeing their pastor on stage, not just preaching but living out the message of faith,” he explains. “It’s one thing to hear about faith; it’s another to see it in action.”

IF IT’S YOUR GIFTING, YOU WON’T GIVE UP. STAY PERSISTENT AND CONSISTENT, AND TRUST GOD TO OPEN THE RIGHT DOORS.

Marcus credits his family for keeping him grounded amid a demanding schedule. As a husband and father, he cherishes the moments he shares with his wife and children. “My family loves what I do,” he says. “I even had my 17-year-old son in the studio recently. He’s rapping on my new album, and it’s been such a joy to include him in the process.”

FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS

Marcus has a heart for mentoring and encouraging up-and-coming gospel artists. “Make sure you’re called to this,” he advises. “If it’s your gifting, you won’t give up. Stay persistent and consistent, and trust God to open the right doors.”

He also emphasizes the importance of preparation. “When the opportunity comes, you need to be ready,” he says. “Relationships are the currency of this industry. Build genuine connections and trust that God will use those relationships to move you to the next level.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

As Marcus looks to the future, he’s gearing up for the release of his next album. “It’s my best work yet,” he says with excitement. “The whole album is complete and ready for mixing and mastering. I can’t wait for the world to hear what God has given me.”

In addition to music, Marcus continues to focus on ministry and outreach. “Whether I’m preaching, singing, or just connecting with people, my goal is always to inspire and encourage,” he says. “We’re all dealing with silent battles, but through faith and community, we can overcome. I’m grateful for what God is doing in my life. Every step of the journey has been worth it, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

From building Functional Medicine practices and participating in fitness competitions to serving alongside his wife’s nonprofit, Dr. Austin Wendell is the epitome of health and wellness. One may say that Dr. Wendell is a pioneer in preventative medicine. Join VBD Magazine as we explore how Dr. Wendell is determined to change the landscape of healthcare.

UNDERSTANDING HIS WHY

Dr. Wendell is the Founder of Vario Health a holistically integrated health center located in Frisco, Texas. Professionally trained as a chiropractor, Dr. Wendell specializes in Functional Medicine. His practice is managed with the concept of personalized lifestyle medicine. “Health and wellness is simply a journey to a better version of yourself,” says Dr. Wendell.

Most of Dr. Wendell’s time is spent working with and educating patients on not just fixing issues, but on living a long vibrant life. He prides himself in building long term relationships with patients based on his dedication to guiding patients to use their body to heal their body. His desire to treat conditions in a non-traditional manner stemmed from his parents and sisters dealing with autoimmune thyroid issues. Although his family was being treated by their own physicians, they continued to experience symptoms that did not result in feeling their normal self. This sparked a desire for Dr. Wendell to help both his family and his patients to live their best life.

DISRUPTING HEALTHCARE

Dr. Wendell and his team of highly specialized physicians provide patient centered custom treatment plans. When asked how Vario Health is different from a traditional primary care office, Dr. Wendell shared his out of the box testing and treatment protocols. In addition to providing Chiropractic care, Vario Health provides IV Vitamin Therapy, massage therapy, hormone therapy, and advanced testing. Imagine having custom vitamin supplements based on your individual deficiencies. Imagine having a personal trainer customizing a weight management

program based on your personalized fitness goals. Imagine treating inflammation throughout the body without prescribed

medication. Imagine receiving massage therapy services as a part of your treatment protocol. Dr. Wendell and his team

have diligently built relationships with insurance companies to ensure most services are covered through a patient’s plan benefits.

CREATING LIFE CHANGING HABITS

Dr. Wendell is determined to practice what he preaches. “I try to live a healthy lifestyle in regard to diet, exercise, stress management, and positive mental health,” he tells us. To help take his practice to the next level, Dr. Wendell has created a transformational program for his patients entitled Purpose 67 . This is a nine-week condition based weekly education and lifestyle group program where his team guides patients to be physically active, eat healthy, and create positive mental fortitude for their health in a community setting. “It takes 66 days to create a habit and it’s our passion to help patients create healthy habits for life,” says Dr. Wendell.

IRON SHARPENS IRON

Dr. Wendell has three rules that he follows to ensure a healthy lifestyle: Have faith that God is in control, love others and put them first, never stop learning as a physician. These rules are seen across the services provided at Vario Health. Most recently, Dr. Wendell added a life coaching service to his practice. A Life Coach serves as a guide, accountability partner, and mentor for his patients as they begin their transformational journey at Vario Health.

“By adding Life Coaches to our practice, we are able to motivate patients to fully commit to building and maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” Dr. Wendell states.

WHAT’S NEXT

Dr. Wendell plans to open additional Functional Medicine practices across Dallas/Fort Worth. He will continue to provide educational seminars on Functional Medicine and serve as a member of Melody of Hope, a nonprofit that uses music to help support and advocate for other nonprofits across the Dallas metroplex.

Development Haven

Dr. Sharma Taylor

Dr. Sharma Taylor, a celebrated novelist and short fiction writer, masterfully bridges cultural divides through her exploration of the complexities of the human experience. Born and raised in Portmore, Jamaica, her journey from a curious child with a passion for books to a critically acclaimed author and mentor is as captivating as the stories she writes.

Balancing the precision of her corporate legal career with the boundless creativity of storytelling, Dr. Taylor views writing as a space to let her imagination soar. “Writing is where I let my inner child play,” she shared. “It helps me make sense of the world and connect with others.” Her stories, rich in Caribbean authenticity, explore universal themes of love, loss, and the quest for belonging.

In an engaging interview with VBD Magazine, Dr. Taylor shared heartfelt reflections on the experiences that have shaped her craft, her profound passion for storytelling, and her aspirations for the future.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Taylor earned her Bachelor’s degree in Law from The University of the West Indies in 2002, followed by her Legal Education Certificate from the Norman Manley Law School in 2004. Continuing her specialization, she completed a Master of Laws in Corporate and Commercial Law at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, in 2008. Her academic journey culminated in 2013 when she received a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.

Dr. Taylor has enriched her craft through various writing courses, including programs offered by the University of the West Indies (Mona and Cave Hill campuses), the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, Canada, Arvon, the Bocas Lit Fest, the BIM Literary Festival, Commonwealth Writers, and the National Cultural Foundation in Barbados.

A LOVE AFFAIR WITH STORIES

“I credit my mother who is a retired primary school teacher, for fostering my love

of reading and writing,” says Dr. Taylor. Reflecting on her childhood, she shared an anecdote that speaks volumes about her early passion for books:

“There was a supermarket not far from where we lived, and at the checkout line, there were stacks of books like Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. I would invariably take a book and say, ‘I want this.’ My mother didn’t have the heart to say no, even if it meant putting back the rice or flour. Books were my escape, my friends, and my way of seeing the world.”

Her fascination with storytelling deepened as she read her way through her childhood, using books to fuel her imagination and explore new worlds. “Writing was something that made me happy even as a child,” Dr. Taylor said. “It’s something I wanted to do to bring that same happiness to others.”

SHAPING A WRITER

Dr. Taylor’s academic journey took her from Bridgeport Primary School to the prestigious St. Andrew High School for Girls in Jamaica. It was there that a third-form English assignment marked a pivotal moment in her journey as a writer.

“I remember being late for class, and my English teacher from India, Miss Bala, stopped everything and called me to the front. She said, ‘You wrote the best story.’ It was the first time I felt validated as a writer, and it gave me the confidence to believe that I was capable of great things,” she recalled.

This sense of validation carried through to her time at the University of the West Indies, where she completed her undergraduate and legal studies, later specializing in corporate law. While her day job requires precise legal analysis, Dr. Taylor uses writing as an outlet for creativity. “Writing allows my inner child to roam free. It’s my happy place,” she explained.

THE MAKING OF WHAT A MOTHER’S LOVE DON’T TEACH YOU

What a Mother’s Love Don’t Teach You, Dr. Taylor’s critically acclaimed debut novel, originated as an assignment during

a creative writing course she took while working in Barbados. The story, set in 1980s Jamaica, explores the life of Dinah, a woman who gave away her baby son to the rich couple she worked for before they left Jamaica, and her struggle to reconcile the past when she believes she’s reunited with her son years later.

“The idea came to me while I was in my kitchen doing dishes,” Dr. Taylor recounted. “I heard Dinah’s voice and had to stop everything to write. The characters themselves led the way, and I just followed.”

The novel examines themes of loss, identity, and the complexities of motherhood. It also reflects Dr. Taylor’s fascination with how people convince themselves of truths they desperately want to believe. “I wanted to explore how much we can emotionally invest in something that may not be true, and then leave it to the reader to decide.”

This novel is available on Amazon and in Jamaica at Kingston Bookshop through purchasing@kingstonbookshop.com or (876) 948-6928.

BRIDGING CULTURES THROUGH STORYTELLING

Dr. Taylor’s writing captures the heart and soul of the Caribbean, offering

a vivid portrayal of life in the region. She considers her work a cultural time capsule, preserving the stories, struggles, and triumphs of her people for future generations.

“I want to ensure that our post-colonial society’s experiences are recorded. History often preserves the stories of conquerors, not the conquered. I aim to document our truths, so future generations understand who we were and what mattered to us,” she shared.

Her dedication to cultural authenticity extends to her use of patois, the Jamaican dialect, in her writing. “I balance authenticity with accessibility,” she said. “I want non-Jamaican readers to understand the context while staying true to the voice of the characters.” This intentional approach ensures her stories resonate not just with Caribbean audiences but also with readers from diverse backgrounds, bridging cultural divides through relatable emotions and universal themes. By weaving the rhythm and nuance of Jamaican culture into narratives that explore love, identity, and resilience, Dr. Taylor creates an immersive experience for readers everywhere. Her ability to craft stories that transcend geographical boundaries reflects her belief in the universal power of storytelling to connect humanity.

MENTOR TO ASPIRING WRITERS

As a former Writer-in-Residence at the University of the West Indies, Dr. Taylor has mentored budding authors, encouraging them to hone their craft and share their stories. “I had a talented group of students who were eager to learn. Many of them have since been published, and seeing their success brings me immense pride,” she said.

Dr. Taylor emphasizes the importance of writing groups and workshops in developing as a writer. “You need feedback to see your work from different perspectives. I never submit anything without first sharing it with my writing group,” she said.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

“Awards provide validation,” Dr. Taylor stated. “Writing can be solitary and sometimes you wonder if your work is making an impact. Receiving recognition reassures you that you’re on the right path.”

Dr. Taylor won the 2020 Wasafiri Queen Mary New Writing Prize, the 2020 Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Award and the 2019 Bocas Lit Fest’s Johnson and Amoy Achong Caribbean Writers Prize. She was shortlisted four times for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize and was a finalist for the 2020 Elizabeth Nunez Award for Writers in the Caribbean in the Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival’s Caribbean Fiction Writers Competition. She earned second prize in the 2020 First Novel Competition. In addition, Dr. Taylor has won gold medals in Barbados’ National Independence Festival of Creative Arts Literary Competition and the Best Adult Short Story Writer prize in the 2019 Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Creative Writing Competition. She is also the 2023 Musgrave Medal awardee for Literature in the Bronze category.

Her short stories have been featured in numerous prestigious publications,

including the Arts Etc NIFCA Winning Words Anthologies (2019/2020, 2017/2018, and 2015/2016), Poui: Cave Hill Journal of Creative Writing, The Caribbean Writer, Jamaica Journal, Commonwealth Writers’ Adda Stories, BIM: Arts for the 21st Century, Pree, and the 2021 Fish Anthology. Notably, her story Saffy’s Song, published in Pree, was shortlisted for the Rebel Women Lit’s inaugural Caribbean Readers’ Awards in 2020, a recognition celebrating exceptional works of Caribbean literature.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Dr. Taylor hopes to see her stories adapted for the screen, bringing her richly textured narratives to a broader audience. “Netflix, if you’re listening, let’s talk!” she quipped.

She also aims to publish more novels and continue mentoring emerging writers. “Teaching is something I love deeply. It’s fulfilling to help others find their voice and share their stories.” However, balancing the demands of a legal career with creative pursuits hasn’t been without its challenges. “I’ve had to focus on my day job for the past few years, but I’m promising myself to return to writing in 2025. It’s the space where I feel most joyful, and I need to honor that.”

From Trauma To Triumph

THE INSPIRATIONAL JOURNEY OF REVEREND DR. XENIA BARNES

If there’s one thing that unites human beings in a common experience, it is the shared familiarity with trauma, defined by the American Psychological Association as an emotional response to a terrible event. Immediately after the event, feelings of shock and denial usually follow, while longer reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea. As a researcher and behavioral scientist, Reverend Dr. Xenia Barnes is knowledgeable of trauma and its impacts; however, she experiences a pivotal moment of loss which reveals “the layers of complexity in trauma response that textbooks alone could never capture.”

Dr. Xenia’s journey from personal challenge to professional purpose taught her that our “deepest wounds often become our greatest sources of wisdom.” She has been translating this wisdom into her motivational speaking and trauma coach program, building on her research in trauma, sharing advice and tools for healing and looking ahead to bring transformative impact to individuals and communities. In essence, she’s living triumphantly beyond the trauma, and empowering others to do the same.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Xenia grew up in Farragut Housing Development with her parents and two older sisters. Here, she witnessed firsthand the complex interplay of community dy-

namics, systemic challenges, and generational patterns that shape lives. Her early experiences shaped her into becoming a Social and Behavioral Scientist, trauma coach, and generational breakthrough speaker, where she had formal academic training in education and behavioral science, 20 plus years of experience in the field of education as a teacher, mentor, and academic leader. Further, Dr. Xenia is the Co-founder of the Melquain Jatelle Anderson Foundation and the CEO of Gold Mind Thoughts Leadership Development and Coaching Services.

TRAUMA TO TRIUMPH FRAMEWORK

In the field of social and behavioral sciences, turning points are pivotal moments that fundamentally alter one’s trajectory. A significant turning point occurred through a profound personal loss when Dr. Xenia’s nephew became a victim of the very community violence she had been studying. This personal tragedy resulted in a powerful paradigm shift, transforming her understanding of trauma’s impact on families and communities.

As a community activist, she initially approached community violence through data and theoretical frameworks. However, this loss highlighted the limitations of quantitative methods in fully capturing community trauma’s complexity. Therefore, she began integrating mixed-method designs, emphasizing the importance of narrative and lived experience. This evolution led to the development of the “Trauma-to-Triumph Framework,” a model examining how individuals and communities transform loss into catalysts for social change. This framework challenges traditional trauma response models by incorporating cultural context, community resilience, and collective healing practices.

A significant lesson from this experience was also the power of authentic vulnerability in scientific inquiry. Recognizing that personal experiences can enhance scientific rigor, Dr. Xenia advocates for acknowledging emotional connections to one’s work. Her career-defining moment was not only about personal loss but also about bridging the gap between academic knowledge and lived experience, between

data points and human stories, and between objective analysis and empathetic understanding. As she points out, “This integration of personal experience and professional expertise doesn’t just make us better scientists - it makes us better advocates for evidence-based social change.”

BLESSING OTHERS

Dr. Xenia transformed the pain from her loss into the establishment of a foundation in her nephew’s honor, which provides several key services for groups experiencing trauma:

1. Research-Based Community Interventions: They develop and implement evidence-based programs for violence prevention, working directly with community stakeholders to ensure cultural competency and practical effectiveness.

2. Policy Development and Advocacy: One of their proudest achievements is the recent passage of “Mel’s Law,” legislation that enables families affected by gun violence, long-term illness, and mental illness to receive posthumous degrees for their loved ones. This law exemplifies the organization’s commitment to creating tangible change through policy reform.

3. Training and Consultation: They provide specialized training for organizations and institutions on trauma-informed practices, cultural competency, and community engagement strategies.

What sets their work apart is its foundation in their Trauma-to-Triumph Framework, recognizing that effective community intervention must address both immediate trauma response and long-term systemic change. Her current doctoral

THIS SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE CAN TRANSFORM FEAR FROM A BARRIER INTO A GUIDE, SHOWING EXACTLY WHERE HEALING IS NEEDED. EVERY STEP FORWARD, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, IS PROGRESS, AND SOMETIMES SIMPLY ACKNOWLEDGING THE NEED FOR HEALING IS THE BRAVEST STEP ONE CAN TAKE.

THIS INTEGRATION OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE DOESN’T JUST MAKE US BETTER SCIENTISTS - IT MAKES US BETTER ADVOCATES FOR EVIDENCE-BASED SOCIAL CHANGE.

research in advanced human behavior centers on developing this framework, as she wants to ensure that the training programs and interventions offered are evidence-based, equipping community leaders and professionals with practical intervention strategies.

CHANGING LIVES

The power of this framework permeates everything that Dr. Xenia undertakes. Through her organization, Gold Mind Thoughts, Dr. Xenia focuses on life coaching through trauma and also leadership development, specifically for survivors of domestic abuse, gun violence, and long-term illness. As a generational breakthrough speaker and trauma coach, her role is to guide others from trauma to transformation and from patterns to purpose. Her work in breaking generational cycles “isn’t just about healing past wounds - it’s about creating new possibilities for future generations. Every cycle broken, every pattern transformed, represents hope for generations to come.”

It’s more than a career; it’s a calling to help others write new chapters in their family stories, transforming generational trauma into generational triumph.

Meeting individuals where they are, leaders within Gold Mind Thoughts recognize that no two trauma journeys are identical. They understand that each form of trauma carries its own unique fingerprint, requiring a carefully calibrated response that honors individual experiences while acknowledging common patterns of healing.

Dr. Xenia would share with her clients that the path to healing often begins with acknowledging a simple truth: fear and doubt are not obstacles to the journey but natural parts of it. When working with individuals starting their healing process,

it is emphasized that these feelings are not signs of weakness but indicators that they are ready to engage with parts of themselves that deserve attention and care. The key is not to wait until they feel completely ready because healing does not require perfection; it requires presence.

One of the most powerful first steps is “compassionate curiosity,” which means approaching the healing journey with gentle questioning rather than harsh self-judgment. Instead of asking, “Why am I still struggling with this?” they should ask, “What is this feeling trying to teach me?” This shift in perspective can transform fear from a barrier into a guide, showing exactly where healing is needed. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress, and sometimes simply acknowledging the need for healing is the bravest step one can take.

Her most transformative advice to clients comes from both her professional expertise and personal experience: build the healing toolkit gradually. Start with one coping strategy, one boundary, one act of self-care at a time. Healing is likened to learning a new language—beginning with basic words before forming sentences. Some days the individual will feel fluent in their healing practice, while other days they may struggle to remember the basics; both experiences are valid and valuable.

Most importantly, she wants her clients to know that healing is not a solitary journey. Whether through professional support, trusted friends, or community resources, it is crucial to allow others to witness and support the growth. Courage in seeking healing not only transforms one’s life but often inspires others to begin their own journeys. The outcome of working with Dr. Xenia is such that survivors aren’t just healing –they’re becoming leaders, advocates, and change-makers in their own right. This is how they turn individual healing into collective empowerment, creating ripple effects that benefit entire communities.

JOIN THE WORK OF TRANSFORMATION

Dr. Xenia proudly invites those interested in the work of the Melquain Jatelle Ander-

son Foundation to explore collaboration opportunities, whether through research partnerships, community programs, or policy initiatives. Their goal is to continue building bridges between scientific knowledge, mental wellness, community healing initiatives, job readiness, and community needs, creating lasting positive change in urban communities across America.

Join Dr. Xenia on her upcoming speaker tours and stay tuned for her two groundbreaking anthologies exploring the intersection of cultural trauma, resilience and community healing. For those who have experienced trauma and are desirous of transforming it into triumph, she is ready to journey with you as a vessel for change, empowering you to become agents of transformation in your own community.

AN AMBASSADOR AND GOOD SAMARITAN Dr. Sandra Henry

In a historical account of the life of Jesus Christ, the writer shares an interaction between a lawyer and the Son of God, where the lawyer defiantly asks him, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus responds with a parable that has been retold for generations. A man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked by robbers, who strip him, beat him, and leave him half-dead. A priest and then a Levite both pass by the injured man without helping him. However, a Samaritan, who is typically despised by Jews, stops to help. He treats the man’s wounds, takes him to an inn, and cares for him, even promising to pay for any additional expenses. Jesus asks which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man, and the lawyer answers, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus then tells him to “go and do likewise.” (See Luke 10:25-37, The Holy Bible).

The parable teaches that our neighbor is anyone in need, and we are called to show compassion and mercy to all, regardless of their background or status. Although we will never meet the good Samaritan in Jesus’ story, we have opportunities to connect with men and women who embody compassion, generosity, and sacrificial love that the Samaritan showed. One such individual is Ambassador Dr. Sandra Henry, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of ReachBack Foundation Inc. She observes that the world is becoming increasingly more dangerous for children and vulnerable people. The use of the internet online predators, cyber bullying, sex trafficking, vaping are rampant. Children and the vulnerable are in desperate need of a safe positive place to get them on and keep them on

the right path. They are like the injured man in Jesus’ story. Dr. Sandra chooses not to ignore them. Instead, she pours out her life for their wellbeing.

BUILDING BEYOND BARRIERS

Dr. Sandra grew up in the Lake Mann projects in Orlando, Florida, with her mother and two siblings. Her mother ensured that their life was not typical of project living by involving Dr. Sandra in modeling school and pageants, despite their exposure to negative influences, such as drug dealers and addicts, thieves and prostitutes. Dr. Sandra’s experiences in the projects taught her resilience and strength, encapsulated in her motto, “Only the strong shall survive!”

From a young age, Dr. Sandra was a visionary with ambitious dreams, aspiring to be the first woman President and an actress. She was passionate about giving and helping those in need, praying to be in a position to change lives and the community. Influential mentors introduced her to the Black Women Movement at sixteen, fostering her passion for community involvement and political activism.

Despite becoming a mother at a young age during college, Dr. Sandra was determined to provide a better life for her children. Her children became her motivation to excel and overcome. She opened a salon and later a restaurant, and her children excelled in sports, representing the USA in international competitions. Through her process of seeking funding for children’s sports endeavors, she recognized a lack of support for deserving kids, and decided to establish the ReachBack Foundation Inc., in the

back of her salon “with nothing but a dream and faith.” Today, the foundation has evolved into a mobile food pantry serving over 60,000 people annually.

IMPACT OF REACHBACK FOUNDATION INC.

Over the years, ReachBack Foundation Inc. has had a significant impact on the community by addressing various needs, from education and job training to disaster recovery and youth engagement. Their services include mentoring, preparation for Scholastic Assessments Tests (SATs) and Academic College Tests (ACTs), college tours, elderly support, and sports training. They also provide wrap-around services, which include the distribution of school supplies, biweekly food distributions, and essential items for disaster recovery, along with hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas events. Notably, in 2023, they distributed over 3,000 toys and two twenty-six-foot box trucks full of food at the Dr. James R. Smith Center in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Sandra also introduced a Food Truck for Kids that provides children with real-life experience in running a business, covering various aspects like shopping, stocking, prepping, customer interactions, and financial management.

In addition to meeting the physical needs of the underserved, the foundation also has a mentorship component. The mentoring team consists of business owners, college graduates, teen moms, former professional athletes, and former drug addicts. All of them grew up poor and faced negative influences, single-parent households, violence, and crime. They understand the traps that are set to prevent success on the streets, in the workplace, and within the family. They liken the struggle to putting five pit bulls in a cage and throwing in one steak; the dogs will fight to the death for the steak, illustrating the concept of survival of the fittest.

EXPANDING CAPACITY AND IMPACT

As the team continues to work diligently to help those in need, the foundation is in desperate need of a building with warehouse space, having identified a perfect

facility that will significantly enhance their capacity to serve the community. This new facility will include a nursing school, offering life-changing career opportunities for community members and surrounding areas, and providing job training for veterans and unskilled workers. They will offer certifications in various fields such as wind tower, water treatment, fiber optics, STEAM, construction, and culinary arts.

Currently operating from two shipping containers and multiple storage units, the new building will allow for better organization and a commercial kitchen. This will streamline their distribution process, enable more efficient operations, and attract more donor contributions by providing a professional space for donors to visit and volunteer. The additional space will also allow for the expansion of services and greater impact on the community.

PRACTICAL WISDOM FOR IMPACT

The meaningful work she engages in comes with challenges, but Dr. Sandra is sustained by prayer and the smiles on the faces of parents and children served by the foundation. Though it is not easy to

do, she holds firmly to the truth that this is her calling from God--one that must be lived out with unshakable faith. As an inspiration for aspiring philanthropists and community leaders, Dr. Sandra shares practical and transparent advice garnered from her experience in the field.

l Develop Patience: Be prepared to exercise patience, as managing adult behavior can sometimes be more challenging than dealing with children.

l Create a Supportive Environment for your Team: Be aware of the various challenges your staff may face, such as issues with drugs, alcohol, or family responsibilities. Actively work to help staff find solutions to their problems, creating a supportive work environment.

l Engender Respect from Everyone: Ensure that respect for your business and your role is maintained at all times.

l Find Your People: Look for individuals who share your passion and commitment to your cause.

l Set Boundaries: Be careful in hiring friends and family, which can lead to complications, especially when it becomes necessary to let them go.

l Go the Extra Mile: Be willing to

engage at the grassroots level and offer support to those who need a hand up. If you are in a position to help someone, do so. There is immense value in supporting underserved communities.

l Stay Grounded: Never forget where you came from and the journey you have traveled.

Living as a modern-day Good Samaritan, Dr. Sandra refuses to turn a blind eye to the needs of those around her. Her entire family, including her 87-year-old mother, is actively involved in the mission. She views this impactful work as her ‘legacy for generations.’ Dr. Sandra joyfully invites local and national donors and volunteers to join her in extending the reach of ReachBack Foundation Inc., transforming the lives of thousands.

MINISTER JANINE L. FOLKS’ MINISTRY OF HEALING AND CONNECTION

From the rhythmic sounds of a bustling roller rink to the introspective moments of ministry, Minister Janine Folks has lived a life marked by resilience, creativity, and compassion. As a licensed and ordained minister, the author of over 14 books, and an accomplished grief counselor, she has dedicated herself to bringing hope and healing to others.

Her journey reflects a rich blend of experiences and roles, each showcasing her commitment to faith, family, and service. Whether counseling individuals through grief, inspiring others through her writing, or ministering to her community, Minister Janine embodies a spirit of empowerment and encouragement.

VBD Magazine is honored to feature Minister Janine and celebrate her extraordinary contributions to faith-based leadership and the art of healing. Her story serves as a source of inspiration for all who seek to transform life’s challenges into opportunities to serve and uplift others.

EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY LEGACY

Born in 1970 to young parents in Detroit, Michigan, Minister Janine’s early years were steeped in the vibrant culture of roller skating. Her grandparents founded the Rollercade Roller Rink in 1955, which remains the longest continuously operated Black-owned roller rink in America. Her father and his siblings managed the rink, making it a central part of the family’s life and livelihood.

“Skating wasn’t just a pastime for us; it was our way of life,” Minister Janine shares.

“They had me in roller skates by my first birthday, before I could even walk well. The rink wasn’t just a business; it was a sanctuary where people came to escape life’s challenges, even if only for a few hours.”

Growing up in the family business, Minister Janine learned the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and customer care under the guidance of her grandmother.

“My grandmother was a master marketer and creative,” she recalls. “She taught me about business, people skills, and the importance of fostering relationships.”

A LIFE INTERTWINED WITH MINISTRY AND WRITING

Minister Janine’s journey into ministry and writing began almost simultaneously. Raised by two praying grandmothers, her faith was nurtured early. “At age nine, I felt called to be baptized, and that’s also when I discovered my love for writing,” she says. Encouraged by her grandmother, she began writing newsletters for the rink and quickly found her voice in storytelling.

SKATING IS A SPECIAL KIND OF FELLOWSHIP.

IT’S WHERE PEOPLE LEAVE THEIR TROUBLES BEHIND, JUST AS THEY DO WHEN THEY SEEK GOD.

For Minister Janine, roller skating, writing, and ministry are deeply connected. “Skating is a special kind of fellowship. It’s where people leave their troubles behind, just as they do when they seek God,” she explains. “It brings balance, coordination, and resilience—not just to the body but to the soul.”

MINISTRY FOCUSED ON WOMEN AND FAMILIES

Although Minister Janine never set out to focus solely on women’s ministry, her experiences naturally led her in that direction. “I didn’t seek to become a licensed minister; it sought me,” she says. “My primary message is to inspire people to be positive, grateful, and hopeful, no matter what. I want them to know the love of our Creator.”

Minister Janine’s work as a Hospice Chaplain and grief counselor adds depth to her ministry. Her passion for these roles was ignited during a harrowing experience in 2003 when her two-year-old son faced a life-threatening illness. “That time taught me about anticipatory grief and theodicy—questions about why God allows suffering,” she reflects. “It also showed me where real ministry happens—at the bedside, holding a hand, listening.”

Her experience led her to pursue Clinical Pastoral Education, eventually working with pediatric and adult hospice patients. “In those roles, I’ve seen God’s presence in ways I never experienced in church,” she shares. “It’s about fostering introspection and meeting people where they are, without judgment.”

A VOICE OF HOPE AND HEALING

Minister Janine has authored over 14 books, spanning topics from inspirational poetry to roller skating fundamentals. Her writing process, she says, is more about listening than creating. “Ideas come to me as if I’m taking dictation. When I try to force it, it doesn’t work,” she says. “Writing is an act of discipline and obedience for me.”

Among her many works, AJ’s Miracle holds a special place. “It chronicles the miracle of my son’s recovery and the lessons I learned during that time,” she says. Another standout is her coloring book Grief to Growth, which she has incorporated into workshops to help others process their grief.

BALANCING COMPASSION AND SELF-CARE

The demands of Minister Janine’s roles require immense emotional strength. She relies on a strong connection with God and a supportive family to maintain her well-being. “I pray without ceasing, meaning I’m always conscious of God with me,” she says. “I also know when to step back and take breaks. My husband is my rock, and together we navigate life’s challenges.”

Minister Janine’s self-care routine includes finding joy in small moments and

maintaining perspective. “I know that struggles are temporary and that all things work together for good,” she says. “This mindset allows me to pour into others without becoming depleted.”

ROLLER SKATING

A passionate roller skating instructor, Minister Janine draws on her family’s legacy to connect with others. “Teaching skating with my father was a way to bond with him,” she says. “Skating is more than just fun; it teaches balance, perseverance, and joy. I’ve written about these parallels in my book Sheba’s Jam, where I use roller derby as a metaphor for life’s challenges.”

LOOKING AHEAD

With her children now independent, Minister Janine is excited about exploring new creative ventures. “I want to delve into writing fiction, maybe some futuristic or historical stories with a dash of fantasy or sci-fi,” she reveals. “I also plan to expand my business, Get The Pen, to help aspiring writers tell their stories.”

She’s currently working on a reboot of AJ’s Miracle, adding new chapters to the deeply personal account. “This project feels like coming full circle,” she says.

“It’s a reminder of God’s grace and the miracles that shape our lives.”

Her legacy is one of connection—whether through the fellowship of skating, the power of words, or the compassion she brings to her ministry. “My goal is to make a difference,” she says. “Whether it’s through writing, speaking, or simply being present for someone in need, I want to leave the world a little better than I found it.”

Marcus Leonardo Boyd

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE OF LIFE WITH AUTISM

What do you do when you discover that your beloved child or sibling has autism? The weight of this diagnosis can be crushing, leaving families and caregivers feeling confused and alone. However, the story does not end there. VBD Magazine introduces Marcus Leonardo Boyd, international autism activist: a beacon of hope and a voice for the voiceless.

In Marcus’s view, the unique nature and design of a person with autism are woven by God for a beautiful purpose. As someone who has faced immense pain, suffering, and misunderstanding, Marcus’s journey is a powerful testament to faith and resilience. He knew that God was preparing him for something, but he didn’t know what. Now, he confidently shares with VBD Magazine how his challenges helped him uncover his purpose and understand the man God wants him to be.

EARLY LIFE STRUGGLES WITH AUTISM

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised between Atlanta and Brooklyn, New York, Marcus was diagnosed with autism at the age of ten. His childhood was marked by severe mental and physical abuse, poverty, abandonment, bullying, and depression. He describes his biological father, Big Tommy, as “the first monster under his bed”, a man who refused to acknowledge Marcus as his own child due to his autistic struggles. In a community unaware of autism, Marcus’s non-verbal communication until the age of 14, sensory issues, constant rocking, and difficulty using the bathroom were not recognized as signs of autism. Because of this, he was sorely rejected by his family and his wider community. Homeless at age seven, Marcus survived by eating out of dumpsters and sleeping in abandoned homes, eventually transitioning through numerous foster homes.

A TURNING POINT OF LOVE AND PATIENCE

Marcus’s life began to change when he moved in with his maternal grandmother. In her home, he had two choices: go to

church or get a job. Since he was too young to work, church became his second home, though at first, he would run around yelling and distracting others. His discerning grandmother had a plan, however. She enlisted the help of her friend, the church organist, to teach Marcus how to play the organ and be his babysitter during church services. He recounts with a chuckle that his grandmother could finally praise God in peace.

Initially, Marcus was difficult, refusing to sit still or follow the organist’s directions. But Marcus fondly tells us, “His patience and his love for me as a human being were key factors that I really appreciated about him.” Through the love and support of his grandmother and the church community, Marcus began to encounter the love of Jesus, which radically changed his life and shifted the trajectory of his painful childhood. Marcus expresses, “I was a non-verbal fat kid that was living in the projects, so I didn’t know I was going to be the man that I am today…I’m glad God allowed me to go through all that I went through, because I can use my testimony for His glory.”

After several arduous months, Marcus not only learned to play the organ but also the piano, electric piano, Congo drums, and standard drum sets. This was the beginning of his love for music and his deep-rooted belief that “just because someone has autism, it does not mean they cannot touch greatness.”

Today, Marcus is a music producer and composer, taking music with him wherever he goes. His story unfolds in his groundbreaking work in the fashion industry, autism activism, empowerment of individuals with autism, and numerous honors for being a pioneer in the autism community.

DESIGNING WITH PURPOSE

Marcus designs with purpose through his two fashion brands Autism Royalty Clothing (ARC) and G Soles Shoes. ARC Brand is a fashion line that was established a few years ago to create representative fashion for the autistic individuals. While still following the rules and principles of

fashion, these clothing items are sensory friendly and use fabrics and patterns that create bold statements. In his own words, he wants his wearers to “feel saucy and look dope in the process while representing who they are.”

With G Soles shoes, his faith is infused with fashion, where he wants people to have God not only on Sundays, but every day, knowing that they can be covered from their head to their feet, walking in God’s grace and mercy. With scriptures on the side of their shoes, they have motivation when they walk and they’re able to share God’s love through fashion. His greatest motivation behind his brands is to change the narrative of autism and demonstrate to everyone that with God, all things are possible!

ENCOURAGING OPEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT AUTISM

For so many, autism is synonymous with impossibilities; however, Marcus is uncompromising about his role as a myth buster about the autistic individuals.

Myth #1: Individuals with Autism Cannot Be Taught

One of the first myths is that individuals with autism are incapable of being taught. He acknowledges that some cases of autism are more severe than others; however, for individuals with high functioning autism,

they should be taught more than cashiering, picking up boxes, telemarketing, or working in fast-food chains.

Marcus upholds that they should be taught how to be doctors, lawyers, nurses, real estate agents or musicians--nursing their dreams so that they can reach higher heights. They should be taught how to be self-sufficient and independent. Despite the challenges that might be encountered, a little patience, love and understanding can help them to be effective in today’s society, just like himself and so many other successful individuals with autism.

Myth #2: Individuals with Autism Cannot Communicate

A second myth is that individuals with autism cannot communicate. Being nonverbal does not equate to having zero communication skills. The broad spectrum of communication necessitates that parents and caregivers find new and creative ways to communicate with individuals with autism.

EMPOWERING AUTISTIC INDIVIDUALS

Marcus wants autistic individuals to know that they are capable of being taught, capable of uniquely communicating, and capable of so much more. For those with autism struggling to find their voice in this world, Marcus offers these empowering words:

“My princes and princesses of this world, know the royalty you are and the voice that you have. Stand strong in it. Yes, you have autism, but that does not mean you are not great. Just because of this diagnosis, it does not mean the end of your future. You are a very intelligent, kindhearted, creative, amazing and incredible individual who can do anything you put your mind to. Lean on the love and support of your village, and if you don’t have family support, find somebody who will love you for who you are. Yes, you’re going to face challenges and there will be situations where you want to give up, but you cannot quit. Your faith in God has to be bigger than a mustard seed.”

When he considers his upbringing in bitter poverty and awful abuse, he firmly believes that if God allowed him to make it, then anyone with autism can make it too with God, faith, determination and the right people around them. His experiences are why he is so passionate about being an activist for the global autistic community.

ACTIVISM FOR THE AUTISTIC COMMUNITY

In hearing Marcus’ story, some might mistake his actions for advocacy; however, Marcus is absolutely clear that his work lies within the realms of activism. Recognized as an autism global activist, Marcus has been instrumental in lobbying for change nationally and internationally in the areas of health, wellness, skills training, school, communication services, housing and therapy services. He fights daily to help bring about better laws and rights in different states in the US, with different policies, programs and benefits that improve the lives of families within the autism community.

NOTABLE AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS

Marcus’ tenacious efforts in activism have resulted in numerous honors, including a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, an Autism Lifetime Achievement Award and a humanitarian award for autism activism. He is honored to receive these awards; however, he declares that he did not become an activist for awards, fame or money. The most important piece

of the puzzle for him is having his voice heard. He feels that finally, somebody is hearing his voice, after so many years of being unable to speak.

In the spirit of Proverbs 31:8, Marcus wants to ‘speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,’ sacrificing to make sure that the next person with autism can have a better life, without going through what he had to go through. Beyond Autism Awareness Month in April and Mental Health Awareness Month in May, he desires for autism to be seen every day of the year.

BUILDING A BETTER WORLD

Driven by his vision for a better world for the autism community, Marcus is energized daily, filling his days with positive affirmations and music. When VBD Magazine inquired about his future plans, he optimistically shared the exciting projects he has in progress.

He is working on several literary projects, the first being a children’s book called “Autism Royalty” with author Jennifer Rose Holly. Readers will follow a modern family where the parents and children have autism and learn to navigate and overcome the day-to-day struggles of living with autism. Second, he is drafting a comic book called “Super Marcus and the Autism Squad” featuring individuals fighting for justice, acceptance, and better laws and rights for autistic individuals. Third, he is designing an inaugural sitcom coloring book entitled “The Waynes,” featuring another autistic family where love and joy are foundations of their home.

Within the fashion and music landscape, he is committed to continue making fashionable designs and styles for his clothing line, and producing and composing contemporary rap albums. Within the world of activism, he plans on participating in more speaking engagements and interviews to spread acceptance and awareness for autism.

Finally, he is most proud of an upcoming feature film on his life with autism entitled “The Marcus Boyd Story: An Autistic State of Mind,” which is being directed by the award-winning film directors Naz Pankey and Andrew McAllister of Beast Mode Entertainment. The first of its kind, the film will chronicle the ups and downs of his childhood and highlight how God allowed him to overcome and become the person he is today.

Through these efforts, he is changing the narrative of autism, advocating for change, and uplifting the autism community. Autism is not the end of the story; it is only the beginning. In the words of Marcus Boyd, “I feel like God has given me a superpower by having autism, and I want to be able to show the world my powers.”

THE WINDS OF CHANGE

The winds of change

Are blowing

No need to

Remain where you are

Step out

Make a start

Who said you must

Go along to get along

Don’t like it

Change it

Don’t ask why

Ask why not

Determine the need

Become the change

Be strong

Change is coming

Don’t give up

Change is coming

Doing the same thing

Expecting different results

Is insanity

Make the first move

Why not you

You have the power

Make the difference

Be that change

Once you start

Others will follow

Become a part

It may take time

But don’t give up

It may get hard

But don’t give up

Some will try

To discourage Bend but don’t break

Even a strong wind

Is subject to change

You be the change

That you want to see

Say, Lord let this change Begin with me

Growth Mindset CREATING YOUR

PERSONAL

DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Around this time of year, we often create plans that will enhance the quality of our lives and careers. However, as the year progresses, it is easy for us to lose sight of our personal goals, and flounder through yet another year, being unhappy with ourselves and others. Even so, we can’t seem to come up with a plan to address the inner gremlin impeding our success.

Success begins with intention and purpose, and planning is a critical component to achieving this. People who hold the view that their lives can be enhanced through personal development planning (PDP) tend to achieve more and are better able to attain their aspirations through habitual practice. Still, it is not enough to have a plan in your head as it will likely remain a mere dream.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development defines PDP as “a combination of approaches, ideas, and techniques that will help you manage your own learning and growth.” In essence, it is your written plan for self-improvement with short- and long-term objectives.

One of the best gifts we can give to ourself is an investment in our personal development and fostering a growth mindset. This requires proper planning, hard work, commitment, and being receptive to receiving feedback from others. As a 2025 objective, challenge yourself to create and execute a successful PDP using this simple 10-step guide:

1. Objectively assess yourself to see where you can use some improvement. Conduct your own SWOT analysis and, where necessary, solicit the views of family, friends, and colleagues or seek help from a professional.

2. Select at least one of the areas identified and set your goals for improvement. Remember your goals could be as simple as becoming an early riser, exercising, eating healthier, or more complex such as getting in front of your past, becoming more resilient, or removing self-limiting thoughts.

3. Ensure that your goals are life changing, but achievable.

4. Increase your knowledge in the subject area pertaining to your goals so that you can develop a more realistic plan.

5. Identify characteristics and values that

reflect development and use these to create milestones.

6. Write out an action plan which details how you will go about achieving the goals and includes strategies, resources, timelines, and milestones.

7. Prioritize the execution of your plan. Each day carry out at least one action towards the achievement of your goals.

8. Recognize threats and opportunities as you carry out your plan and manage these situations.

9. Use your support network to help you stay on course and be open to constructive feedback.

10. Measure your progress and reward yourself for each milestone accomplished.

As you commit your plan to paper, don’t be constrained by format and style of writing. Simply write your plan in a way that is easy for you to follow and track progress.

I enjoy reading the history of Benjamin Franklin, a man who epitomized self-improvement. As he so aptly guided, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” So let’s plan to make 2025 a year of success through personal development planning and adopting a growth mindset.
