CONSTRUTION HOARDING Rehabilitation of the statue of the duke of Saldanha PRAÇA DO SALDANHA

AS

I APPROACHED THE SQUARE KNOWN AS PRAÇA DO SALDANHA, THE FIRST THING THAT STRUCK ME WAS THAT, BESIDES ITS INTENSE MOVEMENT, THE SQUARE WAS SURROUNDED BY MORE TREES THAN MOST SQUARES I KNOW. AS AN EXERCISE APPROACH, I CREATED AN OBJECT THAT WOULD OCCUPY THE SQUARE’S LESS GREEN AREAS, INCLUDING THE SQUARE PROPER, WHERE THE STATUE TO BE RESTORED IS LOCATED.

A SELF SUPPORTING OBJECT IS CREATED USING 2CM THICK STEEL PLATES. NOTEWORTHY IN THESE PLATES IS THEIR PERFORATION BASED ON VECTORIZATION OF PHOTOS TAKEN FROM THE SITE’S TREES.

ONCE IT IS INSTALLED, THIS OBJECT CREATES A PATTERN OF LIGHT AND SHADE SIMILAR TO THE ONE WE FIND WHEN CROSSING AN AREA WITH DENSE VEGETATION, AS IF WE WERE IN A FOREST.

4

PHOTO VECTORIZATION

THIS OBJECT INCLUDES A CENTRAL AREA, STANDING HIGHER THAN THE REST, COMPLETELY ROOFLESS, RISING FROM THE FLOOR AND PROJECTING UPWARDS. THIS AREA IS TO BE USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR WORKERS, BEING PROTECTED BY A FENCE FROM ANY INCIDENT THAT MAY OCCURWITH PASSERS BY DURING RESTORATIONWORKS.

F

OUR “ARMS” COME OUT OF THIS OBJECT SO AS TO REACH THOSE AREAS WHERE VEGETATION IS LESS.

3

ONE OF SUCH “ARMS” IS TRANSFORMED INTO A BUS STOP, REPLACING THE EXISTING STRUCTURE. THIS OBJECT RELATES TO THE SURROUNDING TREES, AS IT HAS A TRUNK (CENTRAL AREA), ROOTS (FOUR ARMS) AND A CANOPY MINGLING WITH THE ROOTS AND FORMING THE ROOF.

5

CONSTRUTION HOARDING

THE CONTRAST BETWEEN LIGHT AND SHADE THAT REACHES THE BUILT OBJECT (FENCE) CREATES AN ATMOSPHERE REMINISCENT OF A FOREST.

6

THE 4 “ARMS” CONNECTING THE SQUARE’S CENTRAL AREA TO ITS SURROUNDINGS ARE 5 METRES HIGH, SO AS TO ENABLE ROAD TRAFFIC TO FLOW, AS ONE OF THE FENCE’S “ARM” HOUSES A BUS STOP.

HOTEL+APARTMENTS Saldanha; LISBON

V

OLUME

THE VOLUME OF THE BUILDING IS ASSESSED BY A SIMPLE ANALYSIS OF THE SITE AND ITS SURROUNDING AREA, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION A CONTINUOUS BUILDING, FITTING IN WITH THE OVERALL CHARACTER OF THE AREA AND BASED ONLY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE HEIGHT OF THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS AND THE OBJECT IN QUESTION. TO CONCLUDE THIS CONCEPTUAL PROCESS, IT OCCURS TO ME TO CREATE A MORE DIRECT LINK BETWEEN AVENIDA FONTES PEREIRA DE MELO AND AVENIDA 5 DE OUTUBRO. AT THE CENTRE OF THE OBJECT, THERE IS A PUBLIC SQUARE THAT EMERGES OUT OF THE EXTORTION OF A LARGE CENTRAL BLOCK FROM A BUILDING, THEREBY CREATING A MORE SHELTERED AREA. AS WE ARE DEALING WITH A LARGE BUILDING, A LIGHTER CHARACTER HAS BEEN IMPRINTED THROUGH MATERIALITY, BY APPLYING A GLASS FAÇADE INTERCALATING BETWEEN OPAQUE AND TRANSPARENT GLASS.

THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING MAKES THE MOST OF ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SURROUNDING AREA, THROUGH PERMEABILITY PROVIDED BY ITS GLASS FAÇADES.

PARTMENTS

IN THE RESIDENTIAL AREA, THE CIRCULATION ZONE ASSUMES A PUBLIC CHARACTER AS “ROAD CORRIDORS” CREATE LEISURE AREAS, PROVIDING CONTACT WITH THE CENTRAL SQUARE AND THE OUTDOOR AREA. THE CONCEPT OF CONTINUITY IS ENSURED BOTH BY PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT AND BY LIGHT WELLS CONNECTING DIFFERENT FLOORS.

THE HOTEL DEVELOPS AS A CONTINUATION OF THE APARTMENT COMPLEX, AT IT FOLLOWS THE BUILDING’S SHAPE. THE FIRST FLOOR HOUSES THE PUBLIC AREAS, NAMELY RESTAURANTS AND ONE BAR, AS WELL ALL ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES; THE UPPER FLOORS HOUSE THE HOTEL ROOMS, AND THE TOP FLOORS HAVE THE SPA AREAS AND THE GYM.

14

THE BUILDING CREATES A PUBLIC SQUARE CONNECTING AVENIDA FONTES PEREIRA DE MELO AND AVENIDA 5 DE OUTUBRO.

15

THERE HAS BEEN CONCERN TO FIND A BALANCE BETWEEN VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL ELEMENTS OF THE BUILDING, AND TO CREATE A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SHERATON AND ITS OLDER SURROUNDINGS.

STAND

SALES STAND OF THE SALDANHA APARTMENTS

T

HE STAND WAS DEVELOPED BASED ON THE PROJECT FOR THE HOTEL AND APARTMENTS AND FOLLOWING THE BUILDING’S ANGULAR CHARACTER. THE BUILDING SEEKS A MATERIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CONSTRUTION HOARDING. THE STAND WILL BASICALLY COMPRISE FOUR PARTS: AN OUTER “SKIN”, SQUARE METAL PROFILES, AN INNER “SKIN” AND THE FLOOR.

-THE OUTER “SKIN” WILL COMPRISE LASER PERFORATED METAL PANELS EXPOSING PROPAGANDA MATERIAL. THE USE OF PERFORATED METAL PANELS ENABLES A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP TO BE ESTABLISHED WITH THE FENCE AND THE TRANSLUCENT INNER “SKIN”, ALL OF WHICH CREATE AN EXCELLENT INTERIOR LIGHTING SETUP.

-THE METALLIC PROFILES ENSURE A CONNECTION BETWEEN BOTH SKINS, AS WELL AS AN INTERESTING VISUAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE EXTERIOR AND THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING.

-THE INNER SKIN COMPRISES PANELITE PANELS OF 36 X 72 X 0,03 CM. THIS TRANSLUCENT MATERIAL ENABLES SUCH LIGHT PERMEABILITY THAT THERE HARDLY IS ANY NEED FOR ARTIFICIAL LIGHT DURING THE DAY.

20

THE FLOOR IS MADE OF ANTI SLIP METALLIC PANELS.

21

THE INTERIORS HAVE BEEN SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THIS STAND. A CONTINUOUS FURNITURE DESIGN HAS BEEN CREATED WHERE THE RECEPTION, THE STORING ROOM AND THE WAITING ROOM COME TOGETHER TO FORM A SINGLE SPACE.

ART CENTRE+LIBRARY A-DA-BEJA; AMADORA / SINTRA

T

HE CENTRE OF A-DA-BEJA WAS CHOSEN FOR THE ART CENTRE AND LIBRARY PROJECT. THE IDEA WAS TO REVITALIZE THIS SPACE BY PRESERVING THE ORIGINAL URBAN PLAN’S FORMAL LANGUAGE. THE CONCEPT OF LARGE PATIOS/SQUARES WAS ADOPTED, AS TWO ARE OF A PUBLIC NATURE, AND ONE IS A COFFEE SHOP/RESTAURANT. THIS PROJECT AIMS AT CREATING A BUILDING THAT WILL NOT ISOLATE THE ART CENTRE WITH ITS VOLUME. IT WILL ENABLE THE CENTRE TO BE CROSSED THROUGH ITS ROOFTOP.

A-DA-BEJA DEVELOPMENT PLAN

24

A-DA-BEJA

HOWEVER, DESPITE THE FORMAL LINK WITH THE DEVELOPMENT PLAN, IT DIFFERS SLIGHTLY FROM HIM. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE CENTRE’S TOPOGRAPHY, AN ACCESS SYSTEM WAS CREATED SO AS TO PINPOINT IT, RATHER THAN IGNORE IT. THIS WAS DONE THROUGH A RAMP SYSTEM DESIGNED TO OVERCOME THE LARGE CHANGES IN LEVEL BETWEEN THE TWO ENDS OF THE TOWN CENTRE. AS REGARDS MATERIALITY, SECTIONN STEEL PANELS WILL BE USED ON FAÇADES, AS WELL AS ON ACCESS RAMP RAILINGS. THE INSIDE WILL BE WHITE, ON BOTH FLOOR AND WALLS, CONTRASTING WITH THE WOODEN CEILING.

WIMMING POOL COMPLEX

THE INTERVENTION AREA HAS AN ABSENCE OF TOPOGRAPHY AS IT IS A RATHER FLAT AREA. THEREFORE, IT WAS CREATED AN ARTIFICIAL TOPOGRAPHY THAT WOULD INCORPORATE ALL THE REQUIRED PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS, AS WELL AS AN URBAN ELEMENT THAT COULD BE EXPLORED IN ALL ITS DIMENSIONS, SINCE THE ROOFTOP IS TOTALLY WALKABLE. ANOTHER OBJECTIVE WAS TO CREATE LEISURE AREAS AND TO PRESERVE THE VIEW OF THE RIVERFRONT. (THIS PROJECT WAS IMPLEMENTED HAVING THESE OBJECTIVES IN MIND). IT SHOULD BE SAID THAT THE CORE PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED AT A -3 METER LEVEL WITH A VARYING HEIGHT DEPENDING ON THE TOPOGRAPHIC CONCEPT CHOSEN. THE SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX THAT WAS DEVELOPED OUTDOORS WAS THE RESULT OF A COMBINATION OF PATIOS FORMED BY TOPOGRAPHIC DEPRESSIONS, BEARING IN MIND THAT SUN EXPOSURE COULD NOT BE AFFECTED. A COFFEE SHOP WAS DEVELOPED ON THE ROOFTOP SO AS TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO WALK OVER IT AND ENJOY THE VIEW OF THE RIVER. THE ROOFTOP ALSO GIVES ACCESS TO THE RESTAURANT LOCATED IN THE SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX.

OURIST CENTRE

IN ORDER TO CREATE A PASSAGE BETWEEN THE SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX AND CAMPO DAS CEBOLAS, I DECIDED TO INCORPORATE THIS CROSSING ELEMENT INTO THE TOURIST CENTRE BY MEANS OF AN ORGANIC DESIGN, WHILST ALSO PRESERVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX. AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE TOURIST CENTRE IS ALSO DEVELOPED AT A -3 METER LEVEL, AS ITS ROOFTOP ENABLES PEDESTRIANS TO CROSS THE STREET THAT SEPARATES CAMPO DAS CEBOLAS FROM THE SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX. HOWEVER, THIS ACCESS IS DIRECT TO THE URBAN AREA, NOT DIRECT TO THE COMPLEX.

THE TOURIST CENTRE INCLUDES A LARGE RAMP SYSTEM GIVING ACCESS TO THE CORE EXHIBITION AREA LOCATED ON THE STREET, AT A HIGHER COTA, MORE PRECISELY AT FIVE METRES. THIS CONCEPT PROVIDES A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE, AS ITS LARGE SPANS AFFORD A 180º VIEW ACROSS THE CITY AND THE RIVER. FURTHERMORE, THERE IS A SMALL BELVEDERE WITH A VIEW TO LISBON’S SOUTH BANK.HOWEVER, THIS RAMP SYSTEM IS ALSO MEANT TO PROVIDE, ALONG THE RAMP CIRCUIT, A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OF THE OBJECTS EXPOSED. (THE CORE EXHIBITION AREA IS LOCATED IN THE AREA PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED).

44

THE TWO MULTI-PURPOSE HALLS ARE SORT OF INVOLVED IN THIS RAMP SYSTEM THAT DELIMITATES THEM. THE SAME APPLIES TO THE SHOP THAT CREATES A MORE OPEN SPACE, LIMITED ONLY BY THE SPACE PROVIDED BY THE RAMPS, AS OPPOSED TO THE PHYSICAL COMPONENT OF ANY WALLS OR GLASS.

OTEL

THE MAIN IDEA FOR THE HOTEL, APART FROM THE PROGRAMMATIC CONTENT REQUIRED, WAS TO VISUALLY CONNECT THE PEDESTRIAN AREA CREATED ON THE RIVER FRONT TO THE HOTEL SQUARE AND THE HOTEL ITSELF. FOR THAT REASON THE GROUND FLOOR, MORE PRECISELY, THE LOBBY AND ADJACENT AREAS ARE SURROUNDED BY GLASS SURFACES. SIMILARLY, THE HOTEL’S MAIN ENTRANCE WAS DESIGNED AS AN EXTENSION OF THE HOTEL SQUARE. IT IS EXTENDED AND NARROWED UP TO A POINT NEARING THE ROAD DIVIDING THE RIVERFRONT FROM CAMPO DAS CEBOLAS.
