A Letter from the President & Chief Executive Officer

Maxine Seidman Board President

Lee Ann Kingham, MBA, LCSW Chief Executive Officer

Perspective is defined as “a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.” In a world where each person is different from the next, there are bound to be Different Perspectives. Abilities Network’s outlook is simple: seeing abilities, not disabilities. Our passion to advocate for those individuals with varying abilities is evident in our mission: to challenge the community to acknowledge the value and equality of people of all abilities. Abilities Network’s customized and individualized programs promote community inclusion. The services Abilities Network provides are designed to help individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities live and work as independently as possible in their communities. Our support staff set those we serve up for success by providing the necessary tools and resources for them to be participating members of their communities. From Autism Services to Senior Services, Abilities Network continues to provide quality services through six diverse programs to Maryland communities. We look back at 2013 with a smile as we reflect on our various accomplishments. This annual report highlights the great work we do thanks to the financial support we receive from foundations, corporations, government grants and individuals. We understand that our greatest achievement is one that is ongoing: advocacy and awareness for those individuals with different abilities. For Abilities Network to continue its success in the years to follow, we must continue to fulfill our mission by challenging the Different Perspectives regarding individuals with disabilities. We grow by seeing things through the perspectives of others.

Sincerely,

Maxine Seidman Board President

“I’ve been with Abilities Network for 19 years when it was still the Epilepsy Association of Maryland. I’ve always received positive feedback and lots of good resources,” said Jeannie, mother of Andrew. “[Abilities Network] gives us information so that we can allow our child to reach out to the community and be included. It’s important for the public to see that these individuals can integrate and fit within their communities. Abilities Network allows the community to understand how these individuals are worth including and how they give back. I’m very grateful for Abilities Network – a wonderful resource.”

Community & Employment Partners “April comes in everyday happy and ready to go. She works from the time she walks in the door until she leaves,” said Stephen, store manager at Michaels in Frederick, Md. “April’s very capable of doing a lot of stuff. She’s definitely been a good employee. It’s a good hire; it’s a good situation.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT Over 150 jobs were obtained for individuals across Maryland with the help of Abilities Network’s employment services and support staff. Stephen [back] and April [front] work together to put away store item s.

Services “My long- time experience with Abilities Network/Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region (EFCR) has been one of absolute excellence. Beyond Care has been for years striving to provide caregivers with the best and highest-quality of training for the individuals they serve,” said Mae, executive program director at Beyond Care. “We are so pleased that EFCR has been an internal part of our training for a decade now. Caregivers come back so well-informed. They learn about epilepsy, how to recognize certain seizures and, more importantly, what they can do to address those issues when residents possibly have [seizures]. It has just been invaluable. My students always come back so excited that they have had an opportunity to be exposed to that training. I can’t imagine a caregiver not having it.”

Mae, executive program director, Beyond Care

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT Epilepsy services provided 82 presentations reaching 3,217 people throughout Maryland.

Healthy “I like the activities [Healthy Families] has – They’re fun!” said Dionne, mother of Anissa. “I’ve learned a lot. I’m happy [Anissa] is walking now and cruising around.” “Dionne has developed a parenting voice that allows others to know that she is Anissa’s protective shield,” said Stacey, family support worker with Abilities Network’s Healthy Families Baltimore County program. “Dionne has set boundaries for Anissa’s play and learning environment by having the appropriate learning tools. [Both parents] have used all of the resources given by Healthy Families.” *The family is expected to graduate from the program in 2017.

“The Woodbrook Early Education (WEE) Center has worked with Project ACT for well over 13 years. Each time that we’ve worked with them, they have been a tremendous help for the staff. They come in with an action plan; they come in ready to help teachers implement the plan,” said Dawn, WEE Center director and teacher. “The social stories that Project ACT shares with us…help the class to be a community. They help all of the friends, even the friend who is having a difficult time, learn to live together and work together.” “There are many times you know a child is struggling and you want to help them the best you can as a teacher, but you’re not totally sure of the right approach to take because it’s something you may not have dealt with before,” said Libby, WEE Center teacher. “Project ACT comes in and gives you this plan. Not only does it give you relief, but it really helps the child.”

*Project ACT opened the first Inclusive Therapeutic Integration Program in Maryland through a partnership with the Frederick County YMCA.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT A total of 1,281 child care providers received trainings.

Services “Most of our clients are seniors who are downsizing – moving from their current home to a retirement community. What we come in and do is take the stress of the move off the client,” said Judy, team leader of Abilities Network’s Move Management Services. “We handle the vendors; we handle whatever the client needs for and on move day. Some of our clients have been living in their homes for 40+ years so there’s an emotional attachment. Moving is stressful already so we try to alleviate that stress. We try to help our clients by letting them know that this is a positive move.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

Move Management Services assisted 56 residents move to their new homes in retirement communities — a 62% increase over the number of moves in the previous fiscal year. Eleven seniors of lower income received financial assistance through the The David and Barbara B. Hirschhorn Foundation to help with their moves into their new senior apartments.

We would like to take the opportunity to highlight two of our grant funders and how their funding has positively impacted our services: The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. Families and child care providers know that some children may need a little extra help to thrive in their community. Through a grant entitled “Autism Inclusion Project,” • Project ACT provided services to 38 children with autism. • One-hundred percent of children served have remained in their current care setting. • Challenging behaviors decreased by 52% in preschoolers, 29% for school age children in out-of-school-time programs, and by 75% within the child’s home.

Thirty-eight teaching programs received training and coaching on including children with autism in their classrooms. This means 75 child care providers are now better able to include children with autism in their programs.

The Henry and Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Foundation With assistance from this foundation, Healthy Families Baltimore County continued to “charge on!” •

Seventy-eight family needs assessments were completed and 53 of these families were provided with child development information and a customized resource packet to meet their identified needs.

• Twenty-five new families enrolled in Healthy Families’ home visiting services. • Seventy-eight percent of fathers were actively involved in providing support to their children enrolled in services. • Families participating in the program remained intact with zero reports of child abuse or neglect, nor were any children removed from their family. Healthy Families takes par ticipating families on an outing to Port Discov ery

• One-hundred percent of participating children and their parents were successfully connected with a primary care physician. Providing quality services since 1964 [11]
