A Lenten Letter Another Lent is upon us with its traditional challenge to reflect upon our calling to be faithful, loving and generous disciples of the Lord Jesus.

from Bishop +John Davies

response I am, once again asking you, as members of our Diocesan family, to support my annual Lent Appeal and, by doing so, to demonstrate the generosity for which Jesus asks. Your support will show that internal concerns don’t take priority over the Gospel imperative. Once more four charities will benefit from the Appeal. Details of these come with this letter and further details can be found on the internet. Through past Lent Appeals, we have donated over £90,000 to good causes so I am sure, that with your support this year, we can easily take this total past £100,000. Every penny you give does good work in being used for the relief of the needs of others, so I hope that I can rely on you and your parishes to be prayerful, thoughtful and committed to doing something to raise funds for this year’s effort. I received a number of suggestions for charities thought suitable for support and so choosing was no easy task. Those finally selected are:

Shelter Cymru Faith in Families (Family Centres in the Diocese)

Brecon Street Pastors The Holy Land Trust As we plan for new ways of witness to put alongside our traditional practices, and as we adjust to changes in our structures, we may still feel hard-pressed both as a church and as individuals. Our new ways have not yet transformed our worshipping numbers, nor will they unless and until we properly and wholeheartedly commit to more shared working and forming a strong family core of worshippers and welcomers with something to offer those who still, frankly, want little or nothing to do with us. However, and despite our internal challenges and opportunities, Jesus still calls us to remember and respond to his call to discipleship and to being Good News to the needy rather than judging or even avoiding them. As an outward sign of that

Many of you are now well experienced in devising either imaginative or traditional methods of raising money for the Appeal. Many of you also simply set something aside as a personal discipline as Lent progresses. However you choose to proceed, I thank you in advance and I wish you well in your planning and in your efforts for others. Jesus said ‘In that you failed to do this for the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you failed to do it for me’ + JOHN SWANSEA & BRECON

Weekday Worship

THE FOUNTAIN INN

Across the Ministry Area Christians are gathering every day to pray and support each other – why not join in? From earliest times, Christians gathered at regular hours during each day to respond to God's word with praise on behalf of creation and with intercession for the salvation of the world. Daily services help Christians of our own day take part in this privilege and duty which belongs to all God's people. They may be celebrated in a very simple form, or enriched with a variety of optional prayers. In our own ministry area we offer two types of weekday services – Offices and Eucharists.

Builth Wells (01982 553888)

From the Vicarage Dear friends,

Smartie Tubes

This month, the Church throughout the world echoes the angel’s message to the women: “Do not be afraid! I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here;; for he has been raised… Come, see the place where he lay” (Mt 28:5-6). This is the climax of the Good News: Jesus, who was crucified, is risen! This event is the basis of our faith and hope. If Christ were not raised, our faith would lose its very meaning;; the mission of our Church would lose its way, for this is the point from which we first set out and in which we continue. Our message this Easter is: Jesus, Love incarnate, died on the cross for all our sins, but God the Father raised him and made him the Lord of life and death. In Jesus, love has triumphed over hatred, mercy over sinfulness, goodness over evil, truth over falsehood, life over death. That is why we should tell all whom we meet: “Come and see!” Every human situation is marked by frailty, sin and death, yet the Good News is not just words, but a witness to God’s love: our faith is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those in need, and saying… ‘Come and see!’: Love is all powerful, love gives life, love brings hope. Pob bendith Father Neil

Monumental Inscriptions Monumental inscriptions are the names, dates, details of next of kin, places of residence, places of birth and occupations etc that are inscribed on the gravestones of the deceased. They are of vital importance and can be a good source of genealogical information which is often overlooked. As with this monumental inscription;; (left) this gives the name of the deceased but also the names of both her parents, the house name, and the parish where they lived. From this you could investigate the parish records to find the baptism of Sarah Anne and the baptism of any siblings, possibly finding the marriage of Thomas and Margaret, and thus Margaret’s fathers name and occupation and the ages of Margaret and Thomas, subsequent burials and in the census from 1881 if the family were still in residence at Pengarreg. This inscription (right) shows that Mary, formerly Mary OWEN was the wife of William Robert MAY and that they may have lived in Clapham Junction at some point as that is where William was from. If they lived locally you could at least glean the information that William was probably raised in London. It also shows that Marys mother was also Mary, and gives her age and date of death and so from this you could work out her year of birth. This lengthy inscription (right), gives an insight into an entire family. It gives the occupation of the ‘head’ of the family David THOMAS, as the town tailor, and by giving his age at time of death, we could work out an approximate year of birth. This also applies to Mary THOMAS his wife. It catalogues the sad demise of seven THOMAS children, two notably in 1854, when cholera hit Builth. From this information we could work out the years of birth of the children and consult parish registers for their baptisms and that of any further children. We may be able to find any surviving children, still living in the area on the census of 1881 onwards, and maybe also Mary, as an elderly woman living with one of them. At the bottom of the gravestone are details of further family members, which would give us insight into the development of the THOMAS family. Next month…Occupations;; Agricultural Labourers Happy Researching, Julie Martin

‘Nearer to God in a Garden’ - March Mustard

In Mark 4: 30-32 Jesus said,' How shall we picture the kingdom of God, or by What parable shall we describe it? It is like the mustard seed, which is smaller than any seed in the ground at its sowing. But once sown, it springs up and grows taller than any other plant, and forms branches so large that the birds can settle in its shade.' In this country yellow table mustard is prepared commercially from its hot oily seeds. For home growing of mustard, it can be grown along with cress on the windowsill and cut as mustard and cress for sandwiches and as part of a salad. The fashion is to call it 'microveg'. From March onwards White Mustard can be used in the garden as green manure. It revitalises poor soils naturally and improves soil structure. Broadcast sow on open ground. Cut back before flowering and three weeks before the ground is required. Let the foliage wilt and dig it into the soil. It can be sown up until September. Overwintered crops will die off with the frost forming a beneficial protective mulch. Linda Lewis 8

Our Heritage Protected

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

The National Assembly for Wales has passed The Historic Environment (Wales) Bill, paving the way for it to be enshrined in law next month. Once law, the Bill will make Wales the first part of the UK to give historical environment records a statutory footing, and it will stop land managers and planning authorities making improper decisions about churches, ancient monuments and other sites of historic value. Alex Glanville, head of property services for the Church in Wales, said: "We congratulate the Welsh Government on the completion of this Bill. The consultative and preparatory work behind it has been exemplary and we look forward to working with the Welsh Government on aspects arising from the Bill - in particular, future guidance on ecclesiastical buildings and the newly formed Welsh Places of Worship Forum." The Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism for the Welsh government, Ken Skates, said: "I am proud that in passing this Bill we are giving greater protection to our historic environment, raising awareness of its significance and supporting its sustainable management. "Our outstanding historic sites and buildings need this protection so that they can continue to fascinate and inspire people for generations to come."

Receive children. Receive me. Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical, prayer movement that invites women, from a different part of the world each year, to prepare a worship service through which their hopes and fears for their country may be brought before the whole world in prayer. On Friday 4 March an estimated 3 million people in over 170 countries and islands will gather to observe the day of prayer, using an order of service written by Christian women in Cuba and translated into over 60 languages and 1000 dialects. In the British Isles alone over 6,000 services will be held. The day begins as the sun rises over the island of Samoa and continues until it sets off the coast of American Samoa, some 35 hours later. The theme ‘Receive children. Receive me’ reflects St Mark’s Gospel, chapter 10 verses 13-16, which is the focus of the service and a reminder that everyone is a child of God and equally worthy of our love and respect. The Republic of Cuba is the largest Caribbean island, located at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico and called ‘the Key to the Gulf’. Politically at odds with the USA, Cuba suffered greatly due to the economic embargo imposed upon it in 1960 but has found strength within itself to move on and overcome many of its problems. This is not a day of prayer just for women - everyone is welcome to attend the service and for further information and resources, together with details of the services in your area, please see the WWDP website: www.wwdp.org.uk

A service will be held in Alpha Chapel, Builth Wells on Friday 4th March at 2pm. All welcome.

Builth Ministry Area Irfon Valley, Blaenau Irfon and Upper Wye Dear Friends We are well and truly in to Lent now and I hope that the sacrifices that you are making are getting a little easier. As we get closer to Easter and think of the sacrifice that Christ made for us, we must think seriously about the good work that we have started to do to utilize our churches and to go out and share the wonderful message of Christ with the people around us. It can be seen by the services that we are offering throughout Holy Week that we are welcoming and willing to offer so many different types of worship to anyone who wishes to come. Just as a dog is not just for Christmas, so this variety is not just for Holy Week. Watch This Space! I would like to wish you a very Blessed and Happy Easter. One thing to make you smile, I was taking an assembly and asked the group, ‘what did Jesus give up for us?’ many hands went up and I picked the one belonging to the little boy who said, ‘fruit!’. Alleluia for children! Love and blessings Petra
