INCLUSION Inclusion Summer School Friday 2nd August | 10am - 4pm | Parish Hall Recognising both the diversity of people in Ireland today, and the importance of being a valued member of society, inclusion is one of the central aims for improving life in the 21st century. Social Inclusion champions a society in which minorities with differences are celebrated. What does it feel like to be elderly in Callan? Or an immigrant? Or gay? How do people with disabilities hope to be supported in Ireland? In Callan? Come and share your experiences, values and hopes with all kinds of interesting people!

ENVIRONMENT AND ECOLOGY Forest and Nature Walk Tuesday 30th July | 7pm | Kyledohir Nature Reserve With both wildlife awareness and fitness walking being more popular than ever, the annual Forest and Nature Walk has been a highlight of the Festival. This year’s event will take place in the Kyledohir Nature Reserve, led by Ranger Jimi Conroy, with thanks to the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

ArCogen International has been developing a radical new energy model for the under-developed world, where 1.2 billion people live without basic electrical energy: An affordable, sustainable, safe, modular, rapidly deployable energy solution that will empower communities. A small pilot of this system will be on display, with commentary by pioneers Rick McGrath and Tom Birney.

CREATIVE WORKSHOPS The Butterfly Project with artist Tunde Toth

Monday 29th - Wednesday 31stJuly | 1-4pm daily | Fennelly’s Take an active part in this interactive installation project, making striking, colourful butterflies while learning silk fibre papermaking and simple origami steps in a workshop setting with Tunde Toth, artist and papermaker. Participants will contribute to the ongoing, gradually growing installation as well as making a butterfly to take home. Workshops are run continuously, outdoors and/or indoors, weather permitting. Minimum participation time: 25 min. Suitable for all age groups (children from 5 years of age) Origami: €5 / participant Silk Papermaking: €9 / participant, including all art materials and your own piece to take with you.

OTHER LOCAL EVENTS Coolagh Cultural Evening to Celebrate the Gathering Saturday 20th July | Coolagh | 7pm All roads lead to the gentle sloping hills of Coolagh on Saturday July 20th to celebrate ‘The Gathering ‘as Ireland welcomes home all emigrants to celebrate with locals our historical and cultural values. The weekend before the Abhainn Rí Festival kicks off at Callan, the Coolagh Committee welcomes you for an evening of prayer, music, food and song. Bishop Seamus Freeman will lead visitors and locals to remember all deceased Coolagh people at the burial site surrounding the medieval ruins on Coolaghmore Hill. Afterwards you are invited to celebrate and meet with returned emigrants and visitors with an evening of food, music and song.

Newtown Cemetery Mass Friday 26th July | 7.30pm Annual gatherings have been part of life in Newtown from medieval times right through to the present day. The annual mass commenced in 1991. It is celebrated each year on the last Friday of July with refreshments served afterwards in the cemetery, reminiscent of ancient, pre-Christian Roman customs. It is a most popular event and an annual gathering for people with connections in Newtown.
