Ralph Colmar’s artworks use still and moving images made with artificial light. The animation technique he developed and used in films such as ‘The Immortal Hour’ grew out of his fascination for artificial light and photography; he began to investigate the process of drawing with torch light during a summer residency at Watershed Media Centre, in 1998. After completing his studies at Winchester School of Art, Ralph made works using artificial ambient light; creating site specific photographs, installations and slide shows. He took up digital film making in 2005, winning a European Media Artist Residency Exchange Bursary during which he made his light drawn animation ‘Ludwig Light’, which premiered at the Impakt Festival in Utrecht, 2007.

Ralph abridged and animated the opera ‘The Immortal Hour’ by Rutland Boughton while on an artist’s residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. His attention was first drawn to this early twentieth century work by the story of its premier at the first Glastonbury Festival, co founded by Boughton, in August 1914. The rich fairy story of The Immortal Hour was adapted from a play, based on the ancient Celtic legend of Midir and Etain; at one time The Immortal Hour was Britain’s best loved opera, a hymn to the constant renewal of life. Ralph’s interpretation using light animation is both playful and lyrical, with a painterly eye for detail.
