LAND OF MY FATHERS

Based on the Novel by Sarah Quigley. From the devastation of the Leningrad Blockade, 1941, came one of the most life-affirming pieces of music ever to be composed. Dmitri Shostakovich’s “7th Symphony” would tell a story. More than a story of war. A story of ordinary individuals, flawed and hopeless, who carried the spark of extraordinary deeds. It is the story of one’s right to life. And, of course, it is the story of a Conductor. | Allan o ddifrod Blocâd Leningrad ym 1941 daeth un o’r darnau cerddoriaeth mwyaf cadarnhaol a chalonogol a gyfansoddwyd erioed. Byddai 7fed Symffoni Dmitri Shostakovich yn adrodd stori. Yn fwy na stori am ryfel, dyma stori am unigolion cyffredin a gyflawnodd weithrediadau eithriadol. Mae’n stori am hawl dyn i fyw. Ac, wrth gwrs, mae’n stori am Arweinydd.

It climaxes in a final quintet of Mozartean poignancy – one of the great ensembles of the contemporary repertoire. A new production for Festival 2018. Sung in English. Running time TBC | Cyfle prin i weld gwaith Barber a enillodd Wobr Pilitzer - opera o gyfnod Hitchcock, gyda sgôr atmosfferaidd a throadau dirdynnol, seicolegol. Yn hofran yn gyson ar ymylon cân, mae Vanessa yn datblygu i ddatgelu melodïau hyfryd, llinynnau cyfoethog a synau’r pres, gydag adleisiau o Puccini, Berg a Strauss. Yr uchafbwynt yw pumawd terfynol sy’n atgoffa un am ddwyster gwaith Mozart. Cynhyrchiad newydd ar gyfer Gŵyl 2018. Cenir yn Saesneg.

Castaway Theatre Company presents ‘Alfie’ by Bil Naughton. The ultimate amoral “swinger”, Alfie swaggers and philosophizes his way through a parade of ‘birds’ in 1960’s London, allowing the audience to eavesdrop as he goes. When one carefree entanglement proves too close for even Alfie’s comfort, the “swinger” lands with a thud. A hit in London, this story became a classic film that made a star of Michael Caine as the title cad. | Cwmni Theatr Castaway yn cyflwyno ‘Alfie’ gan Bil Naughton. Mae’r ‘rafiniwr’ difoeseg Alfie yn swagro ac yn athronyddu ei ffordd trwy ddwsinau o ferched yn Llundain yn y 1960au, gan ganiatau i’r gynulleidfa wrando ar ei sylwadau wrth iddo fynd. Pan mae un berthynas ddiofal yn profi i fod ychydig yn rhy agos, mae Alfie yn glanio gyda chlep. Yn sioe hynod boblogaidd yn Llundain, daeth y stori hon yn ffilm glasurol a ddenodd sylw’r cyhoedd am y tro cyntaf at Michael Caine yn y brif rôl.

SWIMMING NOFIO 17 March -26 May | 17 Mawrth – 26 Mai Swimming involves getting wet. My project is an attempt to visualise depression and anxiety through conceptual photography. One of the problems with mental illness is that the symptoms are often not outwardly apparent. My work is inspired by personal experience, creating imagery as a means of translating feelings that are difficult to put into words. I hope to raise awareness of depression and promote a greater understanding of the spectrum of experiences. This project is for those who have been affected by mental health issues and those who might be in the future – in effect for everyone | Fy mhrosiect i yw ceisio portreadu iselder a phoen meddwl trwy ffotograffiaeth gysyniadol. Ysbrydolir fy ngwaith gan brofiad personol, yn creu delweddaeth fel modd cyfleu teimladau sy’n anodd eu rhoi mewn geiriau. Bring on that Book Creative Writing Boot Camp Thursday 26th – Saturday 28th July 10am-3pm / Adults age 18+/ £85 (£75) Early Bird £65 This (fun) 3-day workshop is designed to energise creative writers - especially those who have been nursing book ideas for a long time. It is open to adult writers at any level, and will be facilitated by DAMIAN GORMAN, who has been writing and encouraging other writers for 30 years. (In that time his own work has garnered awards as diverse as a BAFTA and an MBE.) That book that you’d like to write “some day”? These might be the days to begin it. A Sense of Place - personal approaches to landscape painting. Saturday 4th August –Sunday 5th August

10am-5pm on Saturday and 11am-6pm on Sunday / Adults age 18+/ £80 (£75) Early Bird £60 Just what is it that inspires you? This 2 day course helps anyone interested in landscape painting to focus on their own responses to a particular place of inspiration. Through a series of drawing and painting exercises which emphasise colour, composition, abstraction and expression, a language is developed to communicate these ideas as resolved studio paintings. Suitable for those who wish to expand their painting skills in any water based media or mixed media. Working from photographic source material. Stone-carved Sculpture Workshop Saturday 4th August –Sunday 5th August 10am-4pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday / Ages 15+ / £150 (£145) Early Bird £130 Drawing inspiration from the gallery’s current exhibits as well as a selection of suitable imagery. Participants may initiate sketches and drawings as a starting point. We will be using the ‘Direct Carving technique’ the very same approach to creating Stone-carved sculpture as employed by Brancusi, Gill, Modigliani, Zadkine, Gaudier-Brzeska and later Hepworth, Moore and their

contemporaries. Stone is a natural material, each block with its own unique characteristics, we will be working with the stone intuitively, free to change direction should the nature of the stone suggest it. We may produce drawings for our sculptures but these are guides to thinking rather than definitive models. Life drawing Masterclass Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd July. Saturday 28th – Sunday 29th July. 10am-5pm on Saturday and 11am-6pm on Sunday / Ages 16+ / £80 (£75) Early Bird £65 I am pleased to let you know that this summer we are running another two consecutive weekends of the Drawing Masterclass in the 2D studio of Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Christopher T. Harris Development of The Fox, a bilingual drama based on DH Lawrence Jemima Roberts Writer in residence Damian Gorman Northern Irish poet and playwright DAMIAN GORMAN has been described as “Ireland’s best-kept secret”. His work has garnered many awards over the past 25 years, from a Better Ireland Award to an MBE; a Golden Harp to a BAFTA. His verse documentary for BBC 2 - Devices of Detachment - was hailed in the national press as “a television masterpiece”, and Considerations, his recent series of online poems, was described by Neil Astley as “powerful, humane, moving - everything that video poetry should be”. But he says that, “for me - just for me - writing on its own isn’t enough”. And, as well as his own writing, he has worked for many years as an encourager of writing in other people and communities, especially in areas of conflict. This work has been recognised by, among others, the Commission for Racial Equality. He is also working on a large-scale community writing project here in Aberystwyth. We are partners to Leeway Productions in their 30 Minute Musicals project. The Experimental Performance Group continue their research and experimentation into new forms of theatre and performance. The Arts Centre’s Creu Cymru dance buddies are Gwyn Emberton, Eddie Ladd and Sean Tuan John. HIJINX ACTING ACADEMY The Arts Centre is pleased to be working in partnership with Hijinx Theatre to provide a structured programme for emerging actors with learning disabilities to enter the theatre profession or to gain life skills through drama.
