Manual Practico del Amigo Imaginario (abreviado)/ A Practical Guide for Imaginary Friends (abridged)) “ “What happens when your best friend gets a girlfriend? This familiar situation is the starting point here, but with a little peculiarity: it is a relationship between a human being and his imaginary friend, a superhero named “Captain Kiloton” who has been by his side for 20 years and who now finds out he is vulnerable to jealousy. Magnificent Luis Larrodera was my first and only option for slipping into the superhero’s leotards. So good he accepted! The production of “A practical guide…” has not been an easy process. From the beginning the idea was to shoot it in Scope, in a very, very classic manner. So we used a 35mm Panavision camera to bring out the fact that - oh, my! - on this sober and elegant shot, there’s a superhero. But short films are also meant for experimenting, so we shot numerous sequences in Hi8 video, always at the service of the narrative, which resulted in a powerful contrast of formats on the screen. And it was not only the visual part that was conveniently pampered in this project. The Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra recorded the original soundtrack, there were steady-cam and crane shots, dozens of extras dressed up as imaginary friends, and digital effects (most of them imperceptible), all of it adding up to build this pleasant craziness which is, actually, just a little story of jealousy and friendship. Enjoy it!” Ciro Altabás was born in Zaragoza; his short films have won more than two hundred awards worldwide. “Beth sy’n digwydd pan mae’ch ffrind gorau yn ffeindio cariad? Y sefyllfa gyfarwydd hon yw’r man cychwyn yma, ond mae rhywbeth yn wahanol: dyma berthynas rhwng dyn a’i ffrind dychmygol, archarwr o’r enw “Capten Kiloton” sydd wedi bod wrth ei ochr ers 20 mlynedd ac sydd ‘nawr yn darganfod ei fod yn medru teimlo cenfigen. Y Luis Larrodera bendigedig oedd fy opsiwn cyntaf, a’r unig un, am slipio i mewn i wisg yr archarwr. Nid oedd y broses o gynhyrchu “Cyfarwyddyd Ymarferol…” yn un hawdd. O’r dechrau y syniad oedd i’w ffilmio mewn Scope, mewn modd clasurol iawn, iawn. Felly defnyddiwyd camera Panavision 35mm i roi amlygrwydd i’r ffaith ein bod yn delio gydag archarwr! Ond dylid hefyd arbrofi gyda ffilmiau byrion felly buom yn ffilmio nifer o olygfeydd mewn fideo Hi8, bob tro i wasanaethu’r naratif, a’r canlyniad oedd cyferbyniad pwerus o fformatiau ar y sgrîn. Mwynhewch!” Ganwyd Ciro Altabás yn Zaragoza. Mae ei ffilmiau byrion wedi ennill mwy na dau gant o wobrau ledled y byd.

‘Wythnos’ a Super 8 landscape film1989-1990 / a ‘Ffilm tirwedd Super 8 1989-1990’ “As a member of Aberystwyth Media Group based at the Barn Centre (I984-1990) I was able to experiment with various techniques of film and video making. The group was set up as an open access facility for those interested in film, photography, sound and television. This led me to explore stop frame, slow motion, layering and split frame visual sequences. We looked at various early film experimentation and editing in the camera. To form a narrative I decided to join the three minute lengths of available silent super eight film in the cartridges sold commercially at this time. I chose to structure my film into seven views of landscape, hence the title, ‘Wythnos’ (Week). At this time I was not interested in sound and this was added later. I worked with a musician and was able to put some of the sounds together with his music for the individual ‘days’. Some of the funding for this film came from the Welsh Arts Council. At this time no galleries were showing such films and now that DVDs are available it is easier to screen such works. This is the first time the film has been shown. At the moment I am working on an MA at the School of Art Aberystywth and am interested in combining sound with objects, as well as printmaking. I work at Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth.” ^ Cyfrwng Aberystwyth yng Nghanolfan yr Ysgubor (I984-1990) cefais y cyfle i arbrofi gyda gwahanol dechnegau o “Fel aelod o Gr wp ^ fel cyfleustra agored ar gyfer y sawl oedd yn ymddiddori mewn ffilm, ffotograffiaeth, sain a wneud ffilmiau a fideo. Sefydlwyd y gr wp theledu. Buom yn edrych ar arbrofi cynnar ym maes ffilm a golygu gyda’r camera. Er mwyn ffurfio naratif penderfynais cyfuno’r darnau tri-munud o ffilm fud super 8 yn y cetris a werthwyd yn fasnachol ar y pryd. Dewisais gyflwyno’r ffilm fel saith golygfa o’r dirwedd, o dan y teitl ‘Wythnos’. Ar y pryd nid oedd gennyf ddiddordeb mewn sain ac fe ychwanegwyd hwnnw bellach ymlaen. Gweithiais gyda cherddor a llwyddwyd i gyfuno rhai o’r synau gyda’i gerddoriaeth ar gyfer y gwahanol ‘ddyddiau’. Mae rhan o’r cymorth ariannol ar gyfer y ffilm hon yn dod oddi wrth Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru. Ar y pryd nid oedd unrhyw oriel yn dangos ffilmiau o’r math ac ‘nawr bod DVDs ar gael mae’n haws i sgrinio’r math hwn o waith. Dyma’r tro cyntaf i’r ffilm gael ei dangos. Ar hyn o bryd ‘rwy’n gweithio ar MA yn Ysgol Gelf Prifysgol Aberystwyth ac’rwy’n ymddiddori mewn cyfuno sain gyda gwrthrychau, yn ogystal â gwneud printiau. ‘Rwy’n gweithio yn Amgueddfa Ceredigion, Aberystwyth.”

Cao Mengqin: The Bathroom

Cao Mengqin is an artist from China, selected for the box by artist-curator Wei Chen. Mengqin presents The Bathroom - “a highly conceptual poetical interpretation of the seminal novel by Jean-Philippe Toussaint.” Like Cao Mengqin’s work, this novel is both playful and perplexing, a narrative which touches on the difficulties of coping with the minor but proliferating complexities of modern society. Cao Mengqin has taken the linguistic form of story and interpreted the ideas visually, staging each scene of his own daily life as an echo of the tale in which the protagonist refuses to leave his self-imposed exile in his bathroom until an invitation arrives... Cao Mengqin lives and works in Shanghai. He is published by Photo Fiction, New York; has directed concerts in Western Shore Museum, Tianjin and the Central Conservatory of Music ,Beijing; and has produced a photo-installation of Yang Fudong in Zendai Moma, Shanghai. Artist o Tsieina yw Cao Mengqin, a ddetholwyd ar gyfer y blwch gan yr artist-curadur Wei Chen. Mae Mengqin yn cyflwynoThe Bathroom - “dehongliad barddonol hynod gysyniol o’r nofer arloesol gan Jean-Philippe Toussaint.” Fel gwaith Cao Mengqin, mae’r nofel hon yn chwareus ac yn ddyrys, naratif sy’n cyfeirio at yr anawsterau o ymdopi gyda chymhlethdodau dinod ond cynyddol y gymdeithas fodern. Mae Cao Mengqin wedi cymryd y stori a dehongli’r syniadau’n weledol, yn llwyfannu pob golygfa fel adlais o’r hanes lle mae’r prif gymeriad yn gwrthod gadael ei ystafell ymolchi nes bod gwahoddiad yn cyrraedd... Mae Cao Mengqin yn byw ac yn gweithio yn Shanghai. Arddangoswyd ei waith yn Photo Fiction, Efrog Newydd; y Western Shore Museum yn Tianjin; Zendai Moma yn Shanghai a’r Ganolfan Gerdd yn Beijing .

The film was developed in response to an artist’s book entitled In Debatable Lands and subsequently shown at the newly refurbished Mostyn gallery in Llandudno as part of the opening exhibition We have the mirrors, we have the plans.
