“My work is a social and geographical investigation of people in space in the modern age. These works are explored through processes of photography, either on silver foils or in formal rendered drawings and paintings on sprayed white aluminium. The subject matter looks to street scenes, populated coast lines, shopping malls, pedestrian crossings and tourist hotspots. The photographic images on silver foil are works that materialised from a forensic-like study, a super close-up view of a vista; typically a street scene. These works were carved up to form meta narratives and assembled to construct a series of enigmatic storyboards. The drawings and paintings on aluminium are like constellations of people in space. ‘Pools of activity’, is a name that I gave to a series of drawings and prints of street activity. I was interested in the mechanisms of traffic management and how it affected pedestrians in public spaces. Level crossings and traffic control systems ferry people in a particular way.

In the works, all backgrounds of skies, architecture and nature were erased to leave formations of people in semi-circles, lines and clusters on a white background. More recently my work has been observing the shorelines of populated beaches. I’m interested in their ‘urban-ness’ and its effects on the beach vista. The ‘Helter Skelter’ series tackled a new approach by introducing objects but changing their function within the scenes. ‘Helter Skelter 2’ resembles a DNA structure wrapping round in on itself with uncertainties: the trampolines have no support systems and are reduced to dark squares; shadows reveal a presence but it is not always known what was there in the first place, and the broken sections are like shattered pottery or crazy paving. These works begin to see a change in direction and articulation influenced by a computer gaming family and a desire to take a psychological approach; to move from a geographical survey of people in place to psychological, intangible landscapes.”

“Mae fy ngwaith yn astudiaeth gymdeithasol a daearyddol o bobl mewn gofod yn yr oes fodern. Archwilir y gweithiau hyn trwy brosesau o ffotograffiaeth, unai ar ffoiliau arian neu mewn darluniau a phaentiadau ffurfiol ar alwminiwm gwyn. Mae’r cynnwys yn edrych ar beth sy’n digwyd ar strydoedd, glannau poblog, canolfannau siopa, mannau croesi’r ffordd a llefydd sy’n boblogaidd gyda thwristiaid. Mae’r delweddau ffotograffig ar ffoil arian yn waith sydd wedi deillio o broses sy’n debyg i astudiaeth fforensig, golwg arbennig o agos ar fista, efallai rhywbeth sy’n digwydd ar y stryd. Cerfiwyd y gweithiau hyn i fyny i ffurfio meta-naratif a gosodwyd nhw at ei gilydd i greu cyfres o fordiau-stori enigmatig. ‘ Mae’r darluniau a’r paentiadau ar alwminwim fel clwstwr o bobl mewn gofod. Rhoddais y teitl Pools of activity i gyfres o ddarluniau a phrintiau o brysurdeb ar y stryd. ‘Roeddwn yn ymddiddori mewn dulliau rheoli traffig a sut ‘roeddent yn effeithio ar gerddwyr mewn llefydd cyhoeddus.

Mae mannau croesi a systemau rheoli traffig yn cyfeirio pobl mewn ffordd benodol. Wrth gyflawni’r darnau, dileuwyd pob cefndir, megis yr awyr, pensaerniaeth a natur, er mwyn gadael ar ôl ffurfiadau o bobl mewn hanner-cylchoedd, llinellau a chlystyrau ar gefndir gwyn. Yn fwy diweddar ‘rwyf wedi bod yn edrych ar ymylon traethau poblog. Mae gennyf ddiddordeb i weld pa mor ‘drefol’ yr ydynt a sut mae hyn yn effeithio ar fista’r traeth. Bu’r gyfres Helter Skelter ychydig yn wahanol gan iddi gyflwyno gwrthrychau ond wedyn newid eu rôl o fewn y lluniau. Mae Helter Skelter 2 yn debyg i strwythur DNA yn lapio o gwmpas ei hun gyda phob math o ansicrwydd: nid oes gan y trampolîns unrhyw sytemau i’w cynnal ac maent yn ymddangos fel sgwariau tywyll; mae cysgodion yn datgelu presenoldeb ond nid yw’n hysbys bob tro beth oedd yno yn y lle cyntaf, ac mae’r rhannau toredig fel crochenwaith sy’n ddeilchion neu bafin clytiog. Mae’r gweithiau hyn yn dechrau gweld newid mewn cyfeiriad a mynegiant o dan ddylanwad gêm gyfrifiadurol ac awydd i ymgymryd ag agwedd seicolegol; i symud oddi wrth arolwg daearyddol o bobl mewn llefydd tuag at dirweddau seicolegol, anghyffwrdd.”
