welcome

to today’s visitors - Bedwas

A big welcome to battling Bedwas, the club who seven days ago thrilled Aberavon supporters with the news that they had beaten Neath!! So welcome to coach Steve Law, with Martin Fowler, Paul Williams, Gerry Roberts and skipper Kieran Crawford and his team. that they never win here. Ten games (nine league, one cup) and ten losses. But, beware, they are not to be taken lightly, especially with former Wizard, Kristian Owen, at centre. Now to the Wizards. Two games, two wins. As Nicky Lloyd says: "Delighted, but also disappointed with both displays. But, good to win not playing to our full potential and yes, a lot to work on." Ashley Beck showed last Saturday that he is a lad who given regular rugby is the one to bring supporters flocking to the ground. Training is OK, but playing cannot be beaten. Match fit, Ashley can lift teammates and supporters and yes, I know he gave one away at the other end. People like Wilf Wooller and Lewis Jones did the same and Lewis was the only player ever to be called 'The Golden Boy of Welsh Rugby." I make no secret of the fact that I abhor regional rugby. I don't watch it and have never

reported on one. I would refuse. It should be looked at to see how many players gain caps all the way up, then at about age 22 are has-beens or neverwases (I made that one up). You only have to look at lads for a while to see who really could make it if given the chance. Last season, Matthew McCarthy (nice bloke and a friend of mine) coached Ebbw Vale. I said: "Matt, you have no good big, tough valley forwards here." Matt said: "Your'e in the past. The game has changed." Maybe he was right. Oh, by the way, Ebbw Vale were bottom! Do you notice that in International rugby they spend an hour chatting about all the players? They run out, they sing the anthems and just as one side is to kick-off, the referee's caption goes up. He is never mentioned in the buildup. Today we have David Bodilly. Like me, a Cardiffian, but from the

Bedwas are the biggest bunch of battlers in Premiership rugby. Many think, as I do, that the WRU would love to see them down, but they keep coming up with the seemingly impossible. Every time I watched them at Bridge Field last season they rose to the occasion and won, until a final kick by Matthew Jarvis from the touchline changed it all. Believe it or not, Bedwas are in their eighth Premier season and unless the North Wales outfit, who never play any games it appears, are thrown in next season, Bedwas will still be there. They won Division 6 East in season 1995-96 and Division 2 in 2000-01. They reached the Welsh Cup quarter-finals of 1977-78 and in the following season got there again but lost 26-0 at the Talbot Athletic Ground. In 2006-07 they reached the last eight again but lost to Llandovery and last season lost a thriller 24-34 to Cardiff. One thing that has been consistent with Bedwas is

better area of of Rhiwbina. He is a fireman and a good referee who favours nobody. Just the man to ref at Sardis Road!! So, good luck to both sides and to David also today. Howard Evans.

thechairman Today we offer a warm welcome to Bedwas on what is a shoot out for the title of the last minute victory champions of this season's opening league fixtures. We lead them by two games to one at the moment with narrow and late wins against Tonmawr and Pontypool compared to their late but nonetheless impressive home victory against Neath last Saturday. They are always tough opponents as our final game of last season proved when we scraped another dying-minutes narrow win at the Bridge Field thanks to Matthew Jarvis' magnificent conversion of Ben Thomas' late try. In truth, however, I suspect that most people will agree with me when I say that these last-gasp results are not doing anyone any good, health-wise! It must be said,

however, that the way our boys defended during that frenetic last ten minutes against Pontypool last Saturday was tremendous. It's early days yet, and things are still settling down, but when everything eventually falls fully into place and that kind of determination can be combined with a highquality performance lasting eighty minutes the Wizards will be quite a team. It seems as though Summer has ended suddenly this year and Autumn will be upon us in no time, although the peculiarities of the British climate can often make it difficult to distinguish between the seasons. With this in

Aberavon 31 > > > Pontypool 26

replay

Aberavon kept their heads during a frantic finale to pick up a second successive Principality Premiership victory, but they will be looking to tighten up on the errors that allowed much-improved Pontypool to stay in touch during the second half. Despite escaping relegation by the skin of their teeth, Pontypool arrived at the Talbot Athletic Ground in confident mood after their win against Bedwas. They carried their form into the match, and Geraint O'Driscoll sent over a first-minute penalty. O'Driscoll repeated the feat a few minutes later, and although Matthew Jarvis responded with a three-pointer for the Wizards, few would argue that the visitors were well worth the 13-3 lead that they held soon afterwards, when a defensive mix-up just inside the Pontypool half allowed them space to attack down the right wing before switching

infield for veteran fly-half Shaun Connor to send lock Rhys Bowen over at the posts for O'Driscoll to add the extras. Jarvis added another penalty to reduce the

arrears, but the match was almost a half-hour old before the home side hit their straps. First of all a series of forward drives had the visitors pinned on their one line, but just as a determined defence appeared to have laid the siege and cleared the danger the Wizards struck in devastating fashion with David Pritchard taking a quick penalty on half-way and launching a brilliant attack in which the ball passed through several pairs of hands before young lock Sam Williams threw a cheeky dummy before striding over for his first try for the club. Still Pontypool held a twopoint advantage, and play swung tantalisingly one way then the other then back again. With the interval approaching it looked increasingly as though the visitors would go in holding a narrow lead, but in the closing seconds the Wizards launched a counterattack from deep inside their own half. A long pass from Jamie Davies found Ashley Beck in space, and the centre was quick to spot a midfield mismatch as he shot past a couple of front-row forwards and then brushed off a desperate tackle attempt. Having broken the first line of

www.aberavonwizards.co.uk

defence he went striding away in majestic fashion, drawing the last defender before perfectly timing his pass to left wing Ricky Thomas for his second try in as many games. Jarvis added the simple conversion, and the Wizards were ahead for the first time. O'Driscoll narrowed the gap to just two points shortly after the restart, and although the score didn't change for another fifteen minutes, the home side were gradually asserting themselves, with a dominant scrum and a big-hitting defence. As the final quarter beckoned, Jarvis sent over his third penalty but, somewhat against the run of play, Pontypool capitalised on an Aberavon blunder to send centre Phil Price across at the posts, with O'Driscoll, converting to put his side ahead. As the tension mounted Jarvis and O'Driscoll again exchanged penalties, and the Wizards went all-out for the winning score. Beck crossed only for the move to be called back for an alleged knock-on that most observers insist did not happen, Pontypool cleared their lines, the Wizards went back on the attack,

Ricky Thomas going over at the posts

Pontypool again cleared, and so it seemed destined to go on until a moment of individual brilliance from Richard Thomas turned the game. With the Pontypool fans vociferously claiming an earlier forward pass, play continued down the right touchline into the visitor's half, where the big rightwing took an inside pass from Beck, straightened up his run and tore clean through the Pontypool defence without a finger being laid on him. Jarvis converted with a fine kick, crucially opening up a five-point gap, and despite a desperate late rally by the visitors, during which they kicked several penalties to the right-hand corner in search of the try they so badly needed, the solid tackling of the home defence proved to be impenetrable.

Two wins in two games is not a bad start for our season campaign so far and hopefully today we can make it three against a very tough Bedwas side who had a good result over our local enemies ‘Neef’. We have had a difficult start to the season in terms of two hard fixtures, we may not have performed well in these games but we must take positives out of the games them, mainly their being two victories and us being one out of just four teams to have two from two.

Also our defensive effort in the final ten minutes against Pontypool showed the amount of character and determination this Aberavon team has. We are all working hard in training to deliver the kind of performances of which we know we are very capable, and to

display skilful running rugby while scoring attractive tries, which will inevitably come. We are all striving for success at the club and to ultimately have an unbeaten season at the Talbot Athletic Ground. I would like to wish Luke Hathaway speedy recovery after last weeks game when he got dumped on his backside. Also I would like to say thanks to JJ, Trigger and Aaron Bray for coming to Traethmelyn Junior School to help the children make Healthy Sandwiches and answer any questions that the Children had. They all did well not to swear!

Nailed him! Aggressive in defence, Wizards Second Row Ian Moore gets to grips with the Ponty pack!

the editor One can imagine the following conversation taking place hereabouts recently – maybe at around 4:30pm last Saturday: Almost universally, reports of last Saturday's events at the Bridge Field used the term “surprise result” somewhere along the way. I've no idea why. Bedwas are perennially one of the hardest outfits to overcome, particularly on their own patch, while the aura of invincibility that sections of the media like to attribute to our closest Premiership neighbours disguises a fallibility that exists, albeit perhaps in small quantities, despite the make up of their allegedly expensive, undoubtedly experienced squad. Bedwas, under the shrewd guidance of coach Steve Law (of whom I know my good friend and fellow contributor to these pages, Howard Evans, is a great admirer), are never less than well prepared, invariably deliver one-hundredpercent commitment, and are seldom seen going down to heavy defeat. Prior to this afternoon they had, surprisingly, never recorded a win here at the Talbot Athletic Ground, although it's fair to say

that they've never been less than competitive, and we expect nothing different this afternoon. Up at the Bridge Field they've enjoyed rather more success against the Wizards, although at the tail end of last season they were denied right at the death when Matthew Jarvis sent over a difficult last-gasp conversion to pinch an unlikely win. What of the Wizards so far this season, however? I think it's safe to say that new faces and new patterns have been taking time to bed in, but that opening-day cliffhanger at Tonmawr was significantly improved upon last Saturday, although a couple of costly errors let Pontypool in for scores that crucially kept them in the hunt for rather longer than they should have been. We can rest assured, however, that Messrs. King and Lloyd will have been working hard during training to eradicate such heartstopping moments. Less easy to get to terms with, however, are what are now being referred to far and wide as “the new law interpretations”.

First Aberavon fan:

“Right, so who've we got next week?” Second Aberavon fan:

“Bedwas, home.” First Aberavon fan (brightly):

“Ho, right! How'd they get on today?” Second Aberavon fan:

“They beat Neath.” First Aberavon fan (altogether less brightly):

“Aah.... right....” The IRB, it seems, have seen fit to explain to the world at large what is meant by certain entries in our great game's law books, and I think it's fair to say that a fair amount of confusion has arisen during recent matches as players, who have been playing a certain way and handling certain on-field situations in a particular manner, have suddenly found themselves to have conceded penalties for doing what they've been regularly doing with impunity for several seasons. No doubt this will all settle down as the season progresses, but I feel moved to ask why, if the laws of rugby union require some kind of edict from the IRB to explain what is meant by

them, didn't those who wrote those laws write them using sufficiently unambiguous language to remove any requirement for 'interpretation'? It can't be that difficult, can it? To finish, here's a little quiz question to file away and save for a rainy day... when was the last time two players with the same name played and scored tries for the same team in the same match? Yes, that's right, it was here last Saturday when left-wing Richard “Ricky” Thomas scored the Wizards' opening try, and right-wing Richard Thomas scored the winner five minutes from time.
