The Fresh Water Land Trust works in eight central Alabama Counties for water quality protection, biological conservation, and potential sites for recreation. It serves as a connector between existing conservation areas and for community conservation priorities. The organization, an independent nonprofit, was originally set up as part of Jefferson County’s consent agreement with the EPA over its aging sewer system in 1997. The organization has gathered wide support since its first acquisition of land in 2000 for its use of a non-advocacy, businesslike approach to conservation efforts. It is also accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.
