“It’s a kind of minimalism, but with all the warmth of natural textures”

“Wabi-sabi is far more than a Japanese aesthetic movement,” Sheila says, “it’s about living with your heart rather than your logical mind.” Her heart led her to create Hema Interiors; an interior design company which recognises the importance of sustainability, natural materials and craftsmanship. While wabi-sabi may have been born in Japan, it’s certainly not confined to a single country. It’s everything which can be created from nature. In the Mediterranean it’s the hand cut stones at the entrances of old churches and carved wooden benches in front of historic houses. It’s clay pots and hand blown glass jars created by generations of artisans. The passage of time leaves its mark, but wabi-sabi finds beauty in the corrosion and discoloration. Artisans and artists are Sheila’s greatest collaborators. She seeks out their unique workshops wherever her projects take her. Their hands mould her ideas into bespoke pieces with a soul. “It’s a kind of minimalism, but with all the warmth of natural textures,” she says, about her style. Natural materials are not just beautiful, they are good for you. “They are breathable textures which naturally regulate humidity and don’t release toxins,” Sheila explains.

Aunque el movimiento wabi-sabi es originario de Japón, ciertamente no se limita a un solo país. Aúna todo aquello que se puede crear a partir de la naturaleza. En el Mediterráneo son las piedras cortadas a mano en las entradas de antiguas iglesias y los bancos de madera tallados frente a casas históricas. Son ollas de barro y piezas de vidrio soplado a mano creadas por generaciones de artesanos. El paso del tiempo deja su huella, pero wabi-sabi encuentra belleza en la corrosión y la decoloración. Los artesanos y artistas son los mejores colaboradores de Sheila. Ella busca talleres singulares donde sea que sus proyectos la lleven. Sus manos moldean sus ideas formando piezas con alma. “Es una especie de minimalismo, pero con toda la calidez que aportan las texturas que provienen de la naturaleza “, dice, sobre su estilo. Los materiales naturales no solo son hermosos, son buenos para uno mismo. “Son texturas transpirables que regulan naturalmente la humedad y no liberan toxinas”, explica Sheila.
„Wabi-Sabi ist weit mehr als eine japanische ästhetische Bewegung“, sagt Sheila, „es geht darum, mit dem Herzen und nicht nach dem Verstand zu leben“. Ihr Herz brachte sie dazu, Hema Interiors zu gründen; ein Innenarchitekturunternehmen, das Nachhaltigkeit, natürliche Materialien und handwerkliches Geschick in den Vordergrund stellt. Wabi-Sabi mag zwar aus Japan stammen, aber es ist sicherlich nicht auf ein einzelnes Land beschränkt. Es ist alles, was aus der Natur geschaffen werden kann. Im Mittelmeerraum sind es die handgeschliffenen Steine an den Eingängen alter Kirchen und die geschnitzten Holzbänke vor historischen Häusern. Es sind Tontöpfe und mundgeblasene Glaskrüge, die über Generationen von Handwerkern geschaffen wurden. Der Lauf der Zeit hinterlässt seine Spuren, aber Wabi-Sabi findet Schönheit in der Korrosion und Farbveränderung. Handwerker und Künstler sind Sheilas wichtigste Mitarbeiter.
