Similar to road travel, there is also a wide choice of licences to choose from to travel by sea, which vary according to the type of boat you have and the waters you are sailing in. On Mallorca, though, it is possible to do almost any type of boating licence including the test. Depending on the type of licence, courses can range from a few days to a week or longer. The ports of Palma, Port Adriano, Santa Ponsa, Puerto Portals and Cala d’Or all offer English sailing schools. All boating licences involve a practical and theory training and test. The theory test involves quite a bit of studying and you have to be able to answer many questions on various seafaring topics. In addition to the lessons in the classroom you will also be taken onto the boat for the practical part. The Royal Yacht Association has a particular order in which you have to complete your courses and certificates. To start with you have to decide whether you want to learn how to sail or if a motorboat licence is all you want to do. Courses begin with the ‘Start Yachting’ or ‘Start Motor Cruising’ courses which are designed for absolute beginners and where you can learn the basics of boat steering and seamanship. Entre otros hay escuelas en los puertos de Palma, Port Cala Nova y Club Nautico Cala Gamba (Es Coll d’en Rabassa). Todos los permisos de navegación suponen una formación práctica y teórica, además de un examen. El examen teórico supone estudiar bastante y se espera que puedas responder muchas preguntas de distintos temas marineros. Además de las clases presenciales en el aula, también te llevarán en barco para la parte práctica. Principiantes pueden optar por realizar la Licencia de Navegación, antes llamado „Titulín“. Igualmente, si uno quiere alquilar un barco más grande para dar la vuelta a Mallorca, es aconsejable realizar directamente el Patrón de Navegación Básica (PNB), que permite llevar embarcaciones de recreo a motor de hasta 8 metros de eslora. Para poder llevar veleros, se tiene que hacer una formación complementaria. Si quieres navegar más libremente por el mediterráneo, el Patrón de Recreo (PER) es la licencia óptima. Se pueden llevar embarcaciones de recreo de hasta 15 metros de eslora y alejarse hasta 12 millas de la costa, además está permitido la navegación

Für die theoretische Prüfung muss oftmals ganz schön gebüffelt werden, es gilt eine Menge Fragen zu verschiedenen Themen der Seefahrt richtig zu beantworten. Parallel zum Unterricht im Klassenraum geht es aufs Boot. Beim Sportbootführerschein See (SBF See) gilt es unter anderem das An- und Ablegen zu beherrschen, nach Kurs zu fahren oder ein über Board gegangenes Crew-Mitglied zu retten. Keine Sorge, dafür wird beim Üben eine Boje verwendet. Mit dem SBF See können Sie Motor- und Segelboote ohne Längen- oder Motorbegrenzung chartern, müssen sich dabei aber stets in Sichtweite der Küste bewegen. In der praktischen Prüfung werden keine Segelkenntnisse abverlangt, trotzdem berechtigt Sie der Schein, ein Segelboot zu chartern.
