Ecocirer: Style meets sustainability

ECOCIRER: STYLE TRIFFT NACHHALTIGKEIT allorcan native Barbara Martí has always had a keen interest in the recyclable and the renewable, and it was this passion that first drove her (together with husband Martjin) to open a bed and breakfast with a strong focus on sustainability. Set on a peaceful side street off the main square in Sóller, Ecocirer soon attracted rave reviews for its eco-conscious ethos and inspired styling, as much as for its outstanding vegan breakfasts. Two years on and the same principles have been applied to Ecocirer Hotel, a former ice-cream factory transformed into a high-end, six-room hotel. Located just along the same road as the original guesthouse, this charming boutique property incorporates an emphasis on the eco-friendly with interiors that combine a wonderful assortment of repurposed furnishings and a colourful art collection. All six guestrooms are individually styled – along themes such as Love,

Dream, Believe, and Fly – with numerous upcycled and reclaimed elements arranged with a wit and playful creativity that makes each truly unique. But their ecological credentials compromise nothing on comfort, with large comfy beds topped with premium linen, plus luxury touches that include organic aromatherapy products and fluffy bathrobes. The couple also have ambitions beyond the hotel, and are now organising retreats, in the nearby village of Fornalutx, that cover diverse activities from cooking to dance. They’ve even found time to write a book Eating Colours, which is full of healthy recipes and tips for children and families. Good food is a thread that runs through much of what they do and the kitchen is the centre of their home. Many of the ingredients used for breakfast come from their own vegetable garden. The fresh, healthy breakfast is still a 100% vegan affair, free of refined sugar, and with an emphasis on raw produce; and few guests leave without singing its praise.
