Parents, teachers and staff are now trying to figure out how to make the transition to new schools, following the announcement that Dunach Elementary will be closed as of June 30, 2011. Parents are expected to receive a letter sometime this week from the Abbotsford school district, informing them of the next steps in the process. A total of 124 students currently attend Dunach. The Abbotsford board of education voted unanimously Monday night to close the school. Many of the more than 100 students, parents and staff in the audience at Eugene Reimer Middle School broke down in tears when it became apparent how the decision would go as the seven trustees made statements prior to the vote. All the trustees acknowledged that the decision was a difficult one, based on financial reasons. The board has previously said that VIKKI HOPES Abbotsford News closing the school would save approximately $560,000 in annual costs as well Sam Goertzen-Loeppky (front, left), Jay Neufeld (back) and Daniel as $2.8 million in building upgrades. Project nabs 420 infractions Good Neighbour Program aimed at untidy properties Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Inspectors have found more than 400 bylaw infractions during Abbotsford’s Good Neighbour Project – a campaign to clean up untidy yards. Since its inception on July 19, 2010, city bylaw enforcement officers have covered three residential areas – east of Clearbrook Road, west of Clearbrook Road and the Mill Lake area – looking for bylaw infractions. In that time, 420 files were created. Those include 173 for unsightly premises (wrecked vehicles, tall grass, etc.), 93 for unlicensed vehicles and vehicles parked on lawns, 91 for

Homes, cars damaged Intense heat from blaze melts siding, vehicle panels Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Bob Dawit awoke to a bright orange glow yesterday morning and looked out the bedroom window of his home on Cardinal Avenue to see 50-foot flames engulfing the empty townhouse across the street. Even with the windows closed, he could feel the heat emanating from the blaze. He alerted his two- and three-yearold sons, his wife and his mother. The tenants downstairs – a man, his pregnant wife and their two-year-old daughter – also became aware of the fire. The heat was so intense that they couldn’t leave through the front door. As they ran through the backyard, embers were falling. One burned a hole through Dawit’s jacket. The residents knocked out a panel in their neighbour’s fence, so they could flee further from the ash and heat. Meanwhile, an Abbotsford

surveying the damage done to his home. His family moved to the new neighbourhood about 18 months ago. Now, the vinyl siding on their home was melted, and windows had been blown out. Four cars in their driveway were damaged, including melt-

Hindu priest charged with sex offences Allegations involve two teen girls Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A priest at an Abbotsford Hindu temple has been charged with sex offences involving two female teens. Karam Vir, 31, was arrested Monday by Abbotsford Police. He has been charged with two counts of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual assault. Const. Ian MacDonald said an investigation began on March 12 when a group from the temple came to the Abbotsford Police Department to express concerns about the behaviour of a priest. The group said some notices had been posted at or near the temple, alleging there was some “improper conduct” on the part of the priest. During the police investigation, two girls reported they had

interactions with the man. Abbotsford’s only Hindu temple is located on Walmsley Avenue and is run by the Fraser Valley Hindu Cultural Society. It is a small one-storey building with an adjacent residence. Temple leaders were not on site Tuesday afternoon – just after the charges were announced – but visitors to the site said they were not familiar with Vir. However, one woman expressed shock at the allegations. She said people attending churches and temples put their trust in their leaders. “The holy place should be the holy place,” she said. The phone number posted at the temple for the cultural society was not answered. MacDonald said Vir has been Continued on A7

Watts in the future?

Dianne Watts is no political neophyte. Surrey’s extremely popular mayor had long enjoyed civic success prior to being tapped by pundits as a frontrunner for leader of the BC Liberal party – a title that all but guarantees premiership. However, had Watts chosen to run, she would have become embroiled in the very “cruel” world of provincial politics she says she loathes. Politician versus politician, camp versus camp, lobby group versus lobby group… and this is merely during any leadership bid, never mind when opposition parties fire their opening shots. Campbell, himself, has done little to make things easy for his eventual successor. Since his resignation speech Nov. 3 – in which he neglected to mention he planned to remain at the helm for months – Campbell has not

allowed his party to capitalize on his departure. Instead, a very public Campbell obviously wants the BC Liberals to stay the course he set for them. Odds are, whoever wins the party leadership in a vote Feb. 26 will be seen by some as an interim leader, and could easily follow in the smaller footsteps of former premiers Rita Johnston, Dan Miller and Ujal Dosnjh. Anyone with Watts’ political savvy know this. It could be argued that Watts never had any intention of seeking a higher profile nod than the mayor’s job, but she’s long been wooing the big-city media, and the past weeks of speculation have, no doubt, not been unwelcome. We suggest the smart money would be on Watts eying the premiership in, perhaps, the near future. – Black Press

Next Sept. 24, those voters who take the time to head down to the polling booth will check Yes or No to the following: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)?” When Premier Gordon Campbell announced a few weeks ago that the government would abide by a simple majority vote, I said it would be “mission impossible” for the HST to survive. Its chances may now have improved from “none” to “slim.” The question at least frames the only practical choice. Keep the HST or go back to sales tax status quo, without the

refund that petitioner Bill Vander Zalm conjured up to attract signatures. I asked Finance Minister Colin Hansen about the question, the fate of the proposed refund and the impact of the 15 per cent personal income tax cut imposed by the outgoing premier. Hansen agreed that it’s important to have a simple question, although the implications for the economy go far beyond the tax at the bottom of your sales slip. As for the supposed refund, Vander Zalm’s proposed “HST Extinguishment Act” calls for the old PST to be restored retroactive to last July, with any extra tax collected under the new system repaid on an averaged basis. “But in fact what happens this year is that we would collect slightly less under the HST system than we would have collected had the PST system continued in place,” Hansen said. “So there would not be any extra revenues to the province, and therefore the whole thing is moot.” Making the PST retroactive would also mean somehow collecting back taxes on 15 months worth of expenditures that are reduced under HST, such as disposable diapers, hotel rooms and

business phone services. This would be administratively as well as politically impossible. In short, Vander Zalm’s proposal can’t be done, and the refund he dangled doesn’t exist. It’s too bad more people didn’t understand this before they signed the petition. So if you vote Yes next fall, you will

If you vote Yes next fall, you will still pay the federal GST and you will get back some form of the old PST still pay the federal GST, and you will get back some form of the old PST, once the provincial government rehires hundreds of tax staff transferred to the federal government. A finance ministry briefing memo, released last week, points out that if B.C. flip-flops and brings back the PST, businesses might leave the province.

Some firms that signed contracts based on HST input tax credits may sue the government to recover their losses. B.C.’s reputation as a stable place to invest will be damaged. Then there is the personal income tax cut, which like the HST is intended to attract investment and jobs. Hansen has already notified the Canada Revenue Agency of the 15 per cent reduction, so the income tax deducted from your paycheque will be reduced starting Jan. 1. That tax cut will put about $600 million a year into the B.C. consumer economy, a stimulus that will show up in government revenues. But the ministry forecasts it will be several years before growth fills the revenue hole. Hansen insisted that even with the income tax cut, the B.C. government can still get out of deficit by 2013 and have some “flexibility” in this spring’s budget. All this of course rests on the assumption of an economy growing and recovering from recession. Indulging in the latest wacky B.C. political protest would almost certainly weaken that recovery. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Government duplicity appalling

Proud of Dunach parents On Monday evening I watched as seven trustees made the unanimous decision to close the amazing school where my wife has spent 13 wonderful years. This has been a challenging process on all fronts, and I would like to publicly thank Trustees John Sutherland, Joanne Field and Uultsje de Jong for the compassion and care they have shown to my wife during these last months. Four years ago, another trustee sat in my church and told us that Dunach was on the chopping block. How sad that this same trustee took the opportunity to publicly chastise the Dunach parents. In contrast to this, I must say that I am proud of the Dunach community. Your commitment to your children is outstanding. You have been articulate, diligent and thorough in your research and your presentations. Best of luck as you navigate through the next months. Your children (and their teachers) are lucky to have you. Brian Menagh

government because of health costs resulting from a structural accident. There was no illegal activity nor moral turpitude. In contrast, we have corrupt ministerial aides Dave Basi and Bob Virk. Between them they committed breach of trust, and accepted benefits for leaking confidential information. Their punishment – for two years they must entertain them-

selves at home; Basi must pay a $75,695 fine. Although the B.C. government had signed contracts guaranteeing that the culprits, if convicted, would repay the funds advanced for legal bills, the approximately $6 million loan was forgiven. The reason, said Attorney General Mike de Jong, was that “there’s nothing left to pursue.” Not quite true. Whatever other

assets they may have, Basi owns an expensive Victoria home. Mr. de Jong, you forgave the loan to the criminals but you go after Central Heights which also lacks funds! What’s your moral standard? You could sue the federal government which created the building code and the provincial government which modified it. John H. Redekop

Consider Central Heights Church with its amazing record in community service since the church opened on Jan. 1, 1950. In addition to its excellent programs, concerts, and regular services, this leading church offers much: a women’s centre with its food bank and clothes closet, a single moms ministry, a divorce care ministry, community youth events, Smart Steps for Step Families, a men’s breakfast and more. It also partners with the Abbotsford Food Bank, provides parking for the Sports Centre, and offers its outstanding facilities to many groups. Now this church is being sued by the B.C.

Campbell took the top job 17 years ago. The executive has recommended changing to a weighted voting system so rural areas with smaller memberships will have the same voting power as larger urban constituencies. On Nov. 3 Campbell called for the party to choose his replacement, but has said he will stay on until the new leader is selected, and then remain as MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey. the weighted voting system, called on the weekend for Campbell to step aside. He suggested Finance Minister Colin Hansen, who has indicated he will not run for the leadership, could serve as interim leader and premier while the contest is on. Other likely contenders are Shuswap MLA George Abbott, moved to education minister in Campbell’s last cabinet shuffle, Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon, the health minister, and Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman, the public safety minister.

Dog licensing fees won’t increase

Kevin MILLS

Abbotsford News

Licensing your dog will cost the same in 2011 as it did in 2010. Following the advice of staff, council decided not to increase the cost of dog licences in

the coming year. Last year, the fee was increased 12 per cent, making Abbotsford the fifth highest in the Lower Mainland behind only Mission, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and

Vancouver. The charge for a dog licence in Abbotsford is $28 for spayed or neutered dogs – before Feb. 16 – and $35 after that date. For dogs who are not spayed or neutered, the costs in-

crease to $56 and $70 respectively. In 2010, approximately $315,000 in

fees will be collected. However, the cost for animal control will be about $426,000, leaving

a shortfall of $111,000 to be subsidized by tax dollars. Despite the shortfall,

council voted not to increase fees because of the city’s already high fee ranking.

Transit riders aren’t paying as much as TransLink banked on this year. A new financial report shows the average fare paid per rider declined last year and has held steady so far in 2010 despite the 10 per cent fare increase that took effect in April. One theory is fare evasion is on the rise – possibly due to the tough financial times over the past 18 months. And it might not be passengers blatantly boarding without paying, but more who are paying for one zone when they’re riding through two or more. A Fare Revenue Task Force has been struck to investigate and TransLink meanwhile has stepped up fare checks and enforcement on the buses and SkyTrain. More passengers also bought prepaid FareSaver tickets in advance of the April fare hike, another factor that brought down the average.

TransLink expects to collect $430 million in total from the farebox this year or about 37 per cent of its total revenue, according to the second quarter financial report. It plans to spend $836 million on transit service this year. TransLink is succeeding in pulling more cash out of motorists. It’s on track to collect $322 million in gas tax this year, about $57 million more than last year thanks to the three-cent-per-litre tax hike for TransLink that kicked in last January. This will be the first year more has been raised from fuel tax than property taxes, which add $289 million. SkyTrain passenger injuries are also up – to 51 so far this year – mainly due to passengers falling on stairs or escalators. Overall, an improving financial outlook and various internal savings mean TransLink expects to end the year with a $34 million deficit, better than the $79 million deficit budgeted for 2010.

Pickton costs top $100 million Jeff NAGEL

Bringing serial killer Robert Pickton to justice has cost B.C. taxpayers more than $100 million. Figures released Monday by the Attorney General’s ministry show the

police investigation, trial and other costs of the case total $102.8 million since 2001. The single biggest component is approximately $70 million for the RCMP investigation. And that doesn’t include roughly

another $30 million in RCMP costs borne by the federal government or the expenditures of the Vancouver Police Department on the missing women investigation. Also not included are other federal government costs, such

as his appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. Pickton’s highpowered legal team account for the next biggest disbursement. The provincial government paid $11.7 million towards the cost of his defence.

Another $9.2 million went to prosecution costs, including dealing with witnesses, while $6.6 million was for court services, such as trial support and security. Nearly $2.5 million went for services to support Pickton’s vic-

tims. To date, jailing Pickton has cost $737,000. Another $1.8 million was spent creating a high-security court room at the New Westminster courts, but that’s not counted in the grand total because it’s assumed it will be used in other future cases. The investigation costs include the massive 20-month grid search of the 6.8-hectare Port Coquitlam farm, where forensic investigators found blood samples, bone fragments, DNA and victim’s possessions. Pickton was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years after a year-long jury trial with testimony from 128 witnesses. He lost the final appeal of his conviction on six counts of second-degree murder. Pickton was never tried on 20 more charges of murdering missing Vancouver women, although he boasted to undercover police that he actually killed 49. The B.C. government has named former attorney general Wally Oppal to head an inquiry into how police failed to catch the Port Coquitlam pig farmer far sooner.

Brett Sutter’s stint with the Abbotsford Heat lasted exactly two days. On Wednesday afternoon, the Calgary Flames traded Sutter and defenceman Ian White to the Carolina Hurricanes for Anton Babchuk and Tom Kostopoulos. Sutter, 23, will report to the Charlotte Checkers, the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate. The son of Flames general manager Darryl Sutter found

himself in hot water last week after being charged with assault for allegedly punching a cab driver in Scottsdale, Ariz. early Thursday morning. He was assigned to the Heat on Monday, joined the team on Tuesday in Peoria, Ill., and practiced Wednesday morning before news of the trade broke. Q In other Heat news, the AHL gave Providence Bruins defenceman Steven Kampfer a one-game suspension for a hit

on Abbotsford forward Carter Bancks on Nov. 12. Bancks missed the Heat’s last two games a shoulder injury, and head coach Jim Playfair said there’s a chance he could be back in the lineup for Friday’s road game against the Peoria Rivermen. Q The next Heat home games are Nov. 26-27, when the Manitoba Moose visit the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

Clayton, Skapski picked for Team Pacific A b b o t s f o r d hockey prospects Chase Clayton and Mackenzie Skapski have been selected for Team Pacific and will participate in the U17 World Hockey Challenge in Winnipeg next month. Team Pacific is made up of 11 players from B.C. and 11 from Alberta. Clayton, a centre, is in his rookie WHL season with the Calgary Hitmen and has three assists in

Sports in Brief 16 games. Skapski, a goalie, is a Kootenay Ice draft pick who is currently playing for the junior B Ridge Meadows Flames. Q Carly Neeson and Sam Freeman have been named the University of the Fraser Valley’s athletes of the week. Neeson was player of the game in all

three of the Cascades women’s soccer team’s matches at the CIS nationals in PEI last week, and was named to the all-tournament team. Freeman led the Cascades men’s basketball team in scoring against UVic on the weekend, posting 14 points on Friday and 19 on Saturday.

Q The Fraser Valley Bruins major midget hockey team picked up three of a possible four points on the road against the Kootenay Ice on the weekend. The Bruins and Ice played to a 3-3 draw in their opener, and the Fraser Valley squad edged Kootenay 4-3 in their second game. Abbotsford natives Brady Lawlor and Connor Bowen each posted two points on the weekend.

this season as she’s come to realize that sometimes sacrificing power for accuracy is more efficient. “She’s become a much smarter hitter,” James said. “She’s learning how to take advantage of what the other team is not doing, and that’s helped us be successful.” Earl is a true blue-chip talent – she cracked the roster of the provincial under-18 team last summer, despite being a year younger than most everyone else on the squad.

She’s received scholarship offers from schools on both sides of the border, but at this point, she’s leaning towards playing her university volleyball in Canada. Earl has led Mouat to a series of terrific results this fall, including victories at the Abbotsford City Tournament and the Columbia Bearcat Classic, and a silver medal at Trinity Western’s tourney. Now, all that’s left for the Hawks is to earn that elusive provincial berth.

BALL: Carving out a unique legacy From A21

punched their ticket to provincials on Tuesday evening, when they beat Langley Christian in the Fraser Valley quarter-finals. “At the start of the year, we were still getting to know each other,” Sadie said,

tracing her team’s progress. “But now, we’re close as a team, and we’re definitely improving.” Sadie’s father Scott, who coaches the Eagles, describes her as a competitive, driven individual. She’s most similar to Ben in that respect – Andrea

and Rick are more laid back. “Even if it’s a board game, she can be very competitive,” Scott

said of Sadie. “It’s just her nature. It’s nice coaching players like that. You don’t have to motivate them.”

Leaving a crowded city New family loves Abbotsfords gardens There’s not much resemblance between Abbotsford and the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing. Nanjing builds upwards and has a horizon like a staggered bar graph. Abbotsford has grown outwards, with the tallest building at 16 storeys. The city of Nanjing has a population of over six million people, while Abbotsford has a population of around 150,000. Nanjing is constantly buzzing with the sound of a city – people chattering, cars honking, and the continuous hammering of construction. Compared to Nanjing, Abbotsford is still.

Making movies Chelsea HAEBER Contributor

Heather Nelson cannot count how many movies she has seen at Towne Cinema Centre but, unlike the audience sitting in the slanted rows, she watches from behind in a dim room. The 18-year-old has the unique job of projecting film. It’s a job which used to be common in movie houses, but is slowly being replaced with new technologies. The room Nelson works in – a.k.a “the booth” – is occupied with antique-like equipment. Giant disks turn clockwise, unreeling the tightly coiled film. The delicate material is then gently pulled to its next destination, like a string through a sewing machine. The line of static pictures are smoothly tugged at a constant speed by a quiet motor, making their way towards the light source in the projector. As the film passes the brilliant glow, the still images hit the screen in fluid motion. This process takes a mere five minutes to set up, Nelson said. She quickly adds the tricky part is lining up the projected images within the theatre’s screen. During her shift, Nelson does a variety of duties such as listening to sound checks, making sure the film has no scratches and checking to see if the cinema is clean. Nelson hopes to keep her position for as long as possible – and with a job that supplies her with free popcorn and pop, who would blame her.

what to wear

Holiday party time is about to begin, and the fashion options are endless. The little black dress is always a classic and elegant choice that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. It’s all in the accessories you select.

For the ultimate in glamour, try some chunky pearl-like jewelry. No one has to know it’s not the real thing.

RONALD ALLAN

But the season isn’t all about black. A splash of colour will help you stand out from the crowd, as long as you don’t overdo it. Pick a pretty pattern or a key accessory to highlight, and downplay the rest. And when it comes to what goes on underneath your holiday attire, you can go all out. Foundation garments these days come in everything from the laciest to the most practical, ical, helping you to feel your best.

A look to tie for: Make the right choice

B7

A few tips for the sharp-dressed man As much as a piece of jewelry or other accessory can be the finishing touch to a woman’s ensemble, a carefully chosen tie completes the look of a well-dressed man. Ties come in all different types of patterns and colours that can complement a gentleman’s wardrobe. It is easy to be creative or subdued with ties based on the variety offered. When it comes to the sizes of ties, however, there are a few things to consider to achieve wardrobe success. Ties vary in length and width. A man should match the tie to his body stature and suit style to get the best look. In terms of length, ties generally come in regular length and extra long. Most men can wear the regular length, which is about 57 inches. Men who are very tall or heavyset and have a large neck may need the extra-long length, which is about 62 inches. To determine whether a regularlength tie or a longer one is needed, a man should put on the tie and see where it falls. A tie of proper length should always hit at least to the top of the belt line. Remember, one can get away with a tie that is a little long. However, a tie that is too short looks foolish.

It is also important to match the tie width to the width of the jacket lapel. A thin lapel means a thin tie and vice versa. Another rule of thumb is to update ties regularly. It is unlikely that tie patterns will come back in fashion, so throw out those ties bought in 1983. A new tie is one of the easiest ways to freshen a suit that is already owned.

Decisions, decisions: Keep it or dump it?

When I spend time with my family at the lake, we plan our meals for the week and grocery shop accordingly for those meals. Even with our best attempts at limiting waste and making use of leftovers before we leave, we inevitably end up playing a game we like to call “Eat it or dump it?” The game is simple. We take each item out of the fridge, declare its contents and then decide whether to eat the rest of it or dump it out. It’s an amusing game and, sometimes, an all-out competition to get that last yummy item we somehow forgot about for a few days. The best part of playing the game is that we empty the fridge and don’t leave any expiring food items for the next guests. I think it’s safe to say that many of us could benefit from playing an adapted version of this game with our makeup collection. I’m not saying dump everything just for the sake of “cleaning house.” I’m saying you should have a healthy review of products that you haven’t worn for months or years, and products that are looking a little funny should definitely be considered for removal. Getting the best results from your makeup

Chrissy

Lambert Beyond Beauty can be attributed to a few things: applying your products using quality brushes and tools, and using makeup that has not surpassed its expiry date. As much as we’d like to think that the quality of our makeup products will be the same after six, 12, or 24 months, it’s just not true. For each product that we have crammed into a bathroom drawer or is sitting in a makeup bag, there is a due date that must be considered in order to continue getting great results. Cream- and liquid-based products – such as foundation, concealer, cream blush, cream eyeshadow and mascara – will be your easiest victims to fall prey to bacteria, discoloration and funny fragrance. Although you won’t be able to see the bacteria, the changing of colours and unusual odour are a little more obvious.

Mascaras are highly likely to contain bacteria, thus your mother’s warning to never share mascara, and my suggestion to use a mascara for no more than four to six months at a time. When you pull the wand out of the tube, the mascara should not be dry, flaky, or clumpy. If it is, do not add water or saliva to the wand to moisten it. Don’t take the risk of getting an eye infection from old products. Just dump them! Although some foundations will separate if they sit unused for a little while, they can still be shaken up and applied, but should never have an unpleasant smell. Once opened, you can expect a foundation to last up to 18 months, maximum. Make a point of keeping your fingers out of the bottle or, better yet, look for a foundation with a small pump. Powder-based products such as face powder, blush, bronzer and eyeshadow have a fairly long shelf life, but still don’t last forever. They can dry out and harden, making it difficult to blend the colours, or even get them out of the compact they are held in. Two years is a moderate guideline for

expiry on these types of products, but of course will also depend on the frequency in which you use them and the cleanliness of the brushes that you apply them with. Lipsticks and liners will generally last 18-24 months, but are susceptible to heat and cold so be aware of what you are exposing the products to, such as direct sunlight and freezing car temperatures. With any type of pencil liner, for the lips or the eyes, frequent sharpening will help to reduce bacterial growth. When all else fails, you can ask yourself a few questions about the products you have in your collection: “When did I purchase this?” or “When was the last time I wore it?” If you don’t know the answer to either question, it’s probably been too long. In which case, get rid of it. Give yourself some peace of mind knowing that you have freed space in your drawer or makeup bag and have also reduced your chances of breakout and infection. A win-win situation for all! Chrissy Lambert is a freelance makeup artist based in the Lower Mainland. She can be reached at Chrissy@ MakeupInfusion.com or www. Makeupinfusion.com

Holiday season: So many looks, so little time Buy a few key pieces, then mix and match them At this time of year, your calendar is likely filling up with countless social events. Knowing what to wear to each function can become challenging. While you don’t want to go out and buy a new wardrobe, you still want to make sure you look your best. It’s also likely you’ll want to be dressed appropriately, whether it’s for a business function, a formal event at a ballroom, a casual dinner at a restaurant, or a laid-back meal at a friend’s house. It’s best to buy a few key pieces that can be mixed and matched and dressed up or down, depending on the function. Here are some ideas on how to be the belle of the ball: 1. Evening separates designed in luxurious fabrics such as silks, satins or velvets are good choices. For example, a velvet mock turtleneck can be dressed up or down. For casual nights, it provides instant chic and creates a long, lean look over jeans and loafers. For more formal events, wear it with a long, flowing skirt and satin pumps,

GUIDE TO GLAMOUR Good skin is always in. The night before your event, gently exfoliate your skin to remove the dull and dead skin cells and unleash the fresh and radiant skin below. Follow up with a rich moisturizer and get some beauty sleep. Use a touch of iridescent shimmer to highlight your cheekbones and brow bone. Those with pale skin should use a cool silver or pink shimmer and those with olive or dark skin should stick to a gold shimmer. For extra “oomph” to your eyelashes, use a primer before your regular mascara. This will give you additional length and volume to create a dramatic look. Be sure to use at least two coats of mascara on top of the primer. Skip the summery lip gloss and reach for a lipstick in a rich plum or deep berry shade. To give the colour more staying power, fill in your entire lip area with a matching lip liner and th e n apply you r l ipstick.

Abby Middle kids to go book shopping

Surpreet Dhami from Rick Hansen Secondary spends the day in the Real Canadian Superstore bakery, where her mom works. She won a draw for a netbook computer during Take Our Kids to Work Day.

Recently, Abbotsford Middle School was adopted by the Coles at Seven Oaks Mall. Through Indigo’s AdoptA-School program, Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores across Canada “adopted” public schools in their communities. Over 141 public schools have been matched with stores across the country to raise funds for their libraries. Funding for Canada’s school libraries has been seriously cut over the years. A recent study reveals: Q 60 per cent of parents say their child brings home books from the school library once a week, but also reveals they think school libraries are inefficiently stocked. Q 72 per cent of parents say their schools actively fundraise to support their libraries, but more help is needed. Q 84 per cent of public school parents agreed that

Students go to work

Take Our Kids to Work is The Learning Partnership’s flagship initiative and one of its most popular programs. On Nov. 3, grade 9 students across Canada experienced a day in the life of an adult – at work. This annual, national program, enables the entire community – parents, teachers and employers to play an important role in the career development of young Canadians. This year saw the largest participation rate ever in the Abbotsford School District with approximately 1,000 grade 9 students represented from all

of the city’s secondary schools. Local employers have partnered with the school district to make this a meaningful exercise in career exploration. Students typically spend the day shadowing a parent, friend, or relative and experience first hand the many opportunities and challenges that each job entails. The local winner of the School District TOKWD Draw for an HP Netbook computer was Surpreet Dhami from Rick Hansen Secondary.

the private sector should do more to help public school libraries. On Nov. 26 at 9:30 a.m. the kids of Abbotsford Middle School are going shopping for some fresh new books for their library at their adoptive Coles. So far, they’ve attained 31 per cent of their target goal that will enable them to receive 170 books. They still have a chance to reach 100 per cent of their goal of 550 new books at loveofreading.org/adoptaschool where donations will be accepted for the remainder of the school year. With 42 per cent of Canadian adults lacking basic literacy skills, Indigo feels it is critical to impact childhood literacy by improving public school libraries and enhancing resources. Sharing stories about adoption

For people hoping to adopt a child, the process can be complex, expensive, and at times overwhelming. But the day they first hold their son or daughter in their arms, parents say all worth it. My Adopting Story, a non-profit foundation that harnesses the power of life stories to raise support and spread awareness about adoption, launched its new website, www.myadoptingstory.com, today. “November is Adoption Month, and we thought it was a perfect time to launch our foundation and website,” said Jenny Dryfhout, a member of My Adopting Story’s board of directors and mom of two little girls through adoption. “Many families wish to adopt, but find that

and her husband Matt adopted two daughters, Eden and Marloe. “I had wanted to adopt ever since I was little,” said Dryfhout. “It has been awesome. Every family bonds differently, but we

fell head over heels in love. It didn’t matter how sleep-deprived we were those first few months, they are our own, in every way.” The My Adopting Story website allows adoptive parents to post their family’s

ICBC Injury Claim? Don’t sell yourself short. If you have been injured in a car accident you likely face a number of challenges at once: recovering your health, and dealing with the accident’s effects on your work, your home life, your family and your friends. Understanding and then obtaining fair compensation for your injuries is also extremely important in helping you move forward. That’s where we can help. Our experienced team can evaluate your claim, and work together with you to obtain the compensation you deserve.

For every drive that’s taken, a $20 DONATION will be made by us, on your behalf, to the Abbotsford Food Bank . Our goal is to raise $6000, so we need 300 people to join us on this very important day!
