TWIZEL WAS BUILT IN 1968 AS THE BASE FOR THE UPPER WAITAKI POWER DEVELOPMENT, ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER SCHEMES IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.

T

he plan was to bulldoze Twizel’s dwellings after completion of the hydroelectric construction work, but the inhabitants campaigned to save the town, creating a vibrant centre with cafés and bars. Skiers who make Twizel their base have the choice of four nearby ski fields – Ohau, Dobson, Fox Peak and Round Hill. Twizel’s summer activities include fishing and boating on Lake Ruataniwha, black stilt tours and tramping.
