‘GARDEN CITY’ TITLE.

INNOVATIVE CITY Our Garden City, Christchurch, gateway to the South Island, is endlessly adjusting to change, but always embracing its distinctive heritage and new, contemporary urbanity. Feel the spirit and energy of this city as the rebuild progresses, enjoy the meandering

Avon River, historic churches and buildings, museums, galleries, parks and gardens. Christchurch residents have embraced change and one of the exciting things about visiting the city is the positive energy that abounds. The iconic tram is a welcome sight and the new businesses

complement the many attractions that have operated for many years. Various ‘pop up’ facilities remain, such as retail precincts and art spaces, which means there’s always something new to look at. hristchurch’s floral wonders are a source of great pride and the city has thoroughly earned its internationally recognised ‘Garden City’ title.

Covering 165ha, Hagley Park commands plenty of attention. It’s just minutes from the CBD, and its beauty is particularly impressive when spring arrives. Hagley Park is used for events such as Christmas In The Park and sports games,

including golf, rugby and cricket in the new international standard Hagley Oval. The Botanic Gardens have an impressive collection of trees, flowers and other flora from throughout the world and the 21ha surrounds allow you to ‘lose yourself’ and become immersed in the peaceful atmosphere. The Visitor Centre here, which opened in 2014, is an incredibly beautiful, architecturally designed building with a function space and dedicated gallery with displays exploring the world of plants. There’s also a great café and gift shop selling botanically themed gifts. INSET LEFT: Spring flowers in Victoria Square, Christchurch © davidwallphoto.com
