the earliest settlements being in Howick. The Howick Historical Village, located in adjacent Pakuranga, is a collection of restored buildings from the mid-1800s. Every third Sunday of the month (excluding December) is a themed Live Day with costumed

villagers re-enacting events. In east Manukau lies the beautiful countryside and coastline around Whitford, Pine Harbour, Maraetai, Clevedon and Orere Point. This alternative route to the Coromandel is worth the detour to see scenic Kawakawa Bay and the markets at

The Gondwana Arboretum has plant species from various southern hemisphere locations while the Edible Garden focuses on fruit, veges and nuts. The Peace Garden commemorates Hiroshima bombing victims and the New Zealand women’s suffrage movement is also honoured with its own

garden. Lakes, streams and ponds, as well as a café, feature within the botanic gardens’ surrounds. During the year several events are held at the site; among the highlights are guided walks, children’s amusements, musical entertainment, market stalls and the popular Sculpture in the Gardens.

FAMILY FUN IN SOUTH AUCKLAND New Zealand’s premier theme park, Rainbow’s End boasts many wild rides, including Stratosfear, Corkscrew Coaster, Fear Fall, Power Surge and the Invader. Dodgem cars and bumper boats add to the excitement, while minigolf, the log flume, an indoor games area, cinema and family karts provide versatility.

Pine Harbour (first Saturday of the month from 8am) and Clevedon, (Sundays from 8.30am). Many large attractions, such as the Auckland Botanic Gardens, Rainbow’s End, Villa Maria Winery, the Otara markets and Butterfly Creek are in the central Manukau area.

Continuing the family-friendly appeal, head along to Butterfly Creek. Close to Auckland International Airport, it features a Kiwi Forest, huge life-like dinosaurs, a train ride, friendly farm animals and a butterfly house with more than 700 free-flying exotic butterflies.
