ARTISAN MARKETPLACE

Matakana has a cinema, boutique shops and excellent restaurants. The village boasts many vineyards and wineries, which are mainly boutiquestyle businesses with a firm focus on quality. Although this region has traditionally been associated with reds, several white wines have gained prominence in recent times. To complement the area’s outstanding wine, the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday from 8am to 1pm

on Matakana Valley Rd. If the likes of mussel fritters, organic blueberry ice cream, locally made olive oil and cheeses, artisan baking and freshly brewed coffee have your mouth watering, you’ll want to include a visit in your schedule. Matakana also has a flourishing art and craft scene, most notably the Morris and James Pottery & Tileworks showroom, which was one of the first cottage industries in the area. For some family fun – from horse and carriage rides to a miniature ride-on train – head to The Matakana Country Park.

seaside resorts of Omaha, Leigh and Pakiri Beach. Here you can play golf, admire the giant kauri trees at the Parry Kauri Park, visit the Tawharanui, Mahurangi and Scandrett regional parks, or just wander around the local cafés and shops.
