Influence is Everything Dr. Randy Willison, President, Arkansas ASCD Teachers and administrators in public schools throughout Arkansas spend an ever increasing amount of time, energy, and resources meeting the requirements of No Child Left Behind, Arkansas State laws, and Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) rules and regulations. It’s a challenge that we all readily accept, with minimal whining, but as professional educators in the trenches, we must continue to make our voices heard by key decision-makers at every level. ASCD International and Arkansas ASCD take the business of influence very seriously. It is essential teachers and administrators throughout Arkansas have input into laws, regulation, policies, and procedures that affect students and learning. Through a collaborative influence effort, ASCD International and Arkansas ASCD Board members represent you to national and state legislators and other key officials. Learning to be Influential

LEAP Institute

ASCD hosted its first annual Leadership for Effective Advocacy and Practice Institute (LEAP) in Washington DC, September 17-20, 2005. “This institute marks an important step in ASCD’s growing role in influence and advocacy”, said President Mary Ellen Freeley in her letter to the delegates. The Arkansas delegates were part of an international learning community as they gained expertise in communicating with policy makers. On the final day of the Institute, delegates had a chance to practice newly acquired advocacy skills by visiting with their senators and legislators on Capitol Hill. The Arkansas ASCD affiliate was well represented at this Institute by Mary Gunter, Executive Director, Randy Willison, President, Marsha Jones, President-Elect, Frank Holman, Legislative Liaison to the Arkansas Legislature and Arthur Tucker, International ASCD principal mentor. The attendees heard from prominent speakers such as Deborah Meier, Richard Rothstein, and Ron Ferguson who are important educational researchers and activists. These educational leaders shared their perspectives on education issues related to four International ASCD policy positions: the whole child initiative, health in education, high stakes testing and closing the achievement gap.

When I first introduced this book to graduate students, it had not made the non-fiction best seller list. However, students were intrigued with the titles of chapters such as: “What do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common?” and, “Why do Drug Dealers Still Live with their Moms?” This book has been number one on the non-fiction list. If you are a fan of Maclom Gladwell’s Tipping Point and Blink, you will enjoy this work. Levitt presented his ideas to the Society of Fellows, Harvard’s intellectual think tank. When questions were asked about the theme of his work, he had no idea of an underlying theme. One fellow responded, “Heí‘s twentysix years old. Why does he need to have a unifying theme? Maybe he’s going to be one of those people who’s so talented he doesn’t need one. He’ll take a question and he’ll just answer it, and it’ll be fine.” Levitt causes us to consider, that within the obvious or not so obvious answer to our question, is “The Hidden Side of Everything”.

Outstanding Young Educator Award Finalist

Heather Russell First Grade Teacher Lee Elementary School Springdale School District

Mrs. Heather Russell, a first-grade teacher at Lee Elementary School in Springdale, was selected as one of four national finalists for the Outstanding Young Educator Award (OYEA) presented by ASCD. More than 100 nominations for the award were submitted from across the nation. OYEA is the association’s way of recognizing an emerging educational leader and sharing his or her exemplary practices with the education community. Principal Regina Stewman, who nominated Mrs. Russell, reports that, “The ASCD OYEA is an educational professional, 40 years of age or younger, who demonstrates exemplary commitment

and exceptional contribution to the profession. This person’s creative and innovative accomplishments within the classroom, school, district, state or region have had a significant impact on student performance and achievement over time and provide an ongoing model of excellence in encouraging all learners to succeed. ASCD was particularly impressed with Heather’s energy, passion, and her dedication to both the children she educates and her own lifelong learning.” Arkansas ASCD congratulates Heather for this recognition of her service to the children and educators of our state.

Dr. Douglas Reeves will be one of the featured presenters speaking on the topic, Learning and Loving It: Engaging Every Student for Improved Achievement. “Standards are not enough,” declares Dr. Reeves in this provocative new keynote address. “We can write standards and give high-stakes tests all day, but without meaningful student engagement, teachers and students become adversaries rather than partners in the enterprise of learning.”

60 hours of Professional Development

Harrison School District has embraced ACT 83 and provided meaningful professional development for both classified and certified personnel in accordance with ADE’s rules for professional development and to meet the needs of the district. The process began with needs surveys and a review of evaluations. The cry was loud and clear: folks wanted smaller groups, shorter sessions, and more classroom and building time to work with discipline or grade level colleagues. Freedom of choice, the opportunity to guide one’s own learning to improve student achievement, was the greatest need expressed. The 05-06 calendar affords teachers three flex days. Throughout the summer teachers attended approved professional development activities of their choice at the local CO-OP and across the state. Curriculum training was provided by the district’s 30 department chairs in May and they facilitated different study groups during the summer.

Dr. Angela Olsen Harrison School District ,Curriculum Coordinator Study groups offered the 12 hours of planning and preparation allowed by ACT 1185. This also provided targeted areas such as music, art, and gifted and talented time to focus on content specific to their needs. Some study groups ventured into topics such as student-led conferences. Seven days (42 hours) of professional development was offered at the district’s Back to School Certified Conference that included a conference program outlining presenters, time frames and locations, ADE’s requirements, and the credit to be received for attending. The choice offered was well received, but choice equals a lot of hard work and manpower from behind the scenes. Seeing a staff so professionally engaged so deeply and eager for more, though, is well worth the effort. The Harrison School District is living proof that 60 hours of professional development, and then some, is needed and can be provided.

The theme for the AASCD Educational Leadership Grant is

“Quality Professional Development”

Call for Proposals

  Focus, the AASCD Journal of Research and Best Practice, will provide practitioners with information  concerning current  practice that moves research and theory into action. An essential attribute of a successful  professional learning community is to  share best practice and current research with colleagues. To achieve this goal, the AASCD editorial panel invites submission of  manuscripts with a focus on concepts, content, and practices addressing P-18 educational issues that ultimately impact student  learning. The target audience for Focus is broad in scope; members will include teachers, administrators, researchers, university  professors, undergraduate and graduate students, and policy-makers.   

“Reach Them All ~ Teach Them All Through Partnerships” Arkansas ASCD has selected the theme “Reach Them All - Teach Them All Through Partnerships” for the 2006 Summer Conference. Arkansas ASCD invites you to share your expertise and knowledge about assessment and instruction during this conference. As a professional non-profit organization, the association is unable to pay an honorarium or reimburse program participants for travel, hotel expenses or registration. Program participants who attend the conference must register and pay regular conference fees. These 75-minute presentations may be presented twice. The presentations will be held on June 19th or 20th.

Submission Guidelines Number of Copies: Submit four (4) copies of the manuscript and one manuscript copy on a CD using a Microsoft Word, PC compatible format.

Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining written permission for any copyrighted material and /or photos, drawings, data, etc. that may be used in the manuscript. A copy of the release should be included with the manuscript, with the original retained by the author(s).

Editorial Style All manuscripts must follow American Psychological Association (APA) 5th edition guidelines. The suggested length for the manuscript is between 10 to 15 pages in length. Each typed or word-processed page must be double-spaced. A 10 point font such as Times New Roman, or a similar font, should be used. Margins should be one-inch in width on all sides.

Format

Procedures for Review Selection Process: All manuscripts will receive a “blind” review by a panel of reviewers. In order to ensure a fair and anonymous review, careful effort should be made not to refer to the author(s) in the manuscript, only the cover letter, the cover page and the biographical page should have the author(s) name. Accepted Manuscripts: Once the selection process has been completed authors will be contacted. Editors of the AASCD Journal reserve the right to make editorial revisions. Due to the review process, E-mailed copies cannot be accepted for consideration.
