Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Busy Bees Hurriedly they buzz from flower to flower Poking their heads into each place they stop. Not pausing a second, a minute, an hour In their toil to gather their essential crop Of pollen to build up the walls of their home. And, in serving, taking greatest care of their queen, They push themselves harder, each worker alone Slowly burning themselves out, just to be seen As a successful creature given this life To collect all they can. Being seduced Into valuing their relentless push against strife, Not realizing its nothing that they've produced. Life's hurried futility for those busy bees; When choosing our paths, do we become one of these?

A Hollow Image Outside Life falls into order: Education and opportunity unfolds itself, Training and employment reinforces its security, Stress and restraint are cast off for freedom. Each of these form up A broadening of shoulders, A raising of chin, A brightening of eyes. All signets of confidence and security Come to rest upon the visage and being, On the outside. But this is only a hollow image. While outside grows strong and secure Within lies emptiness. An empty chamber collects its dust As the structure about it Is polished and purified, Transformed into pristine preparation. Even as every detail is fashioned well And well cared for, The one missing piece, The piece that will fill this emptiness And make the person truly whole Remains untouched and unreceived. 12

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

So the emptiness remains. And I remain ever A hollow image.

13

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Finches gathering up the twigs, Hopping all about the ground, Seeking through grass and under bushes For those factors and components they will combine To finally build their home. Some leaves fallen under a tree Make for a sturdier wall; Bits of string to tie and wrap, Stronger supporting sticks for structure; Broken bark brought in too. All the pieces together Hoping to form the complete home. But even with these pieces gathered, The finch continues its relentless pursuit, Still scurrying about In search of those essential missing factors, Those oh-so-vital pieces still needed To make its true home Complete and whole.

14

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love Just as the finches hurry and scurry, Seeking their homestead parts, Our home to form is coming together; Parts and pieces uniting in their proper order and frame, All in one forming the foundation Of what will be our home. For transport from place to place A vehicle comes to own; Sound employ for a steady flow Allows for progress to make secure. Housing itself also comes, Sheltered sanctuary created for us, A lone protection from the storm. Yet while these factors have formed for us, I find myself in ongoing search, Seeking the single factor missing, That oh-so-vital piece still needed To make our true home Complete and whole. Already found, but still waiting, That single missing factor Is you.

Glints of Joy Every day is a set of moments, Times temporary, Collections of now. Into each we step to Vantage points of decision, Points of turning right or left, Stepping forward or back, Each a challenge of our choice. Captured with these moments Are feelings flowering: Often in pain or grief, Sorrow and sadness; Sometimes in pleasure and peace. But rarely, And when you least expect it, These moments reach out to us With flashes of light, Glints of joy, Making all the other moments worthwhile.

16

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Second Thoughts Things used to be so very clear. All of the pieces used to be in place, Each line lining up, Every tone and hue blending Into perfect harmony; It all used to be so easy to see. But now I find growing within Questions and doubts; So many second thoughts Creeping in upon me. Just one new factor inserted Sends the whole world spinning And shatters the picture Into a thousand pieces. If only one new point Can cause so much calamity, Then how secure was the picture In the first place? I just hope These second thoughts Aren't so strong To wipe away all we've assembled. But then again...

17

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Path Mistaken Passing through days and weeks We continue to step along, Moving forward To somewhere. But pausing, looking back To where we came from, We find the path we've taken Not that path we'd wanted. We'd turned left when it should be right, We'd detoured far too often. The path mistaken may lead us forward, Yet not to the desired destination. The paths we take form out our steps, They take us to a point, But it is the path we tread that fills up The depths of our being, That make us into what we are. Which path we take may lead to a target Not necessarily the one wanted. So it is the path itself that gives us value, The journey that molds our person; It is the path that is important.

18

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love Seeing us on the path mistaken By looking to our past, We find we can leap to the side, To the neighboring path Again and again Until we finally are on that one path We sought out in our past. Ever correcting our step this way, We must take care for the paths we take. For the path mistaken will surely us Into our desired person fail to make.

Silverfish Silverfish found behind a fridge, Crawling in darkness As through youth they pass, Scrounging for food and safety, Learning the ways of life. In time they will crawl out And look up to the light And finally learn to fly, Being merely silverfish No more.

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Starlight Wandering thoughts and wandering feet Would often take me to where we meet Standing beneath the stars, Viewing their distant frequent flash. But instead, they all turned to ash The dreams once held as ours, Now as distant as those skyspots we view. We'd once hope to hike at night, Eyesight guided only with starlight And glowing of the moon. But now I'm left to hike alone, Stumbling 'neath the light I'm shone Left to realize soon I'd live the loneliness I'd hoped I never knew. Yet stars still shine their reaching beams, Declaring to me that when it seems Only darkness is left in life Still the chance for joy may be Offered, granted, given me To help overcome the strife I face, and lead me on to that blessed starlight, too.

Ups and Downs Each day of living seems like a road Stretching out to the horizon Twisting and turning, Shifting and shaking As it forms itself to the Topography it traverses. Throughout its reach The person riding across the road Finds it filled with More than the curves Coming with life's adventures; It also forces the traveler Into sudden ups and downs, Periods of height and joy As well as wallows in sorrow. And the traveler is caught up In each rise and fall, Strongly feeling their effects With each movement. But as excited with anticipation Or diminished with depression

22

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love The traveler becomes, As queasy as the many movements Make the motor's master, Seeing the larger view, The picture of the entire road, Reveals each rise and fall As but minor movements Along the road's journey; Only this understanding Makes the traveling Bearable.

The Prize of Life There's far too much going on All at once, al thrust upon Us to occupy our time. We've too many things we have to do, Things forgotten and things we knew; The obvious and sublime. We take on so much responsibility That we remove from us all possibility Of ever getting rest. Through all of this bustle and hurry, This obsessive-compulsive fret and worry, We miss out on the best And amazing things life has to offer. Be we all seem content to suffer, Placing torture in our lives. In we focus only on being busy, It'll only make us tired and dizzy, And we'll miss the greatest prize Of life.

Lessons

26

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Single Learning Oh ye single soul who'd strayed Apart from Shepherd's flock: The thoughts and doctrines you've betrayed, Those that you quickly mock. Such sacred things and great-priced pearl You've simply thrown aside; E'en our unity against the world You clearly do deride. So while we all together move As one for the true light, Your rebellion will come to prove The certainty of your plight. Oh ye single soul who'd strayed Apart from Shepherd's flock: Fears of your consequence you've allayed; You've never taken stock Of the menagerie you've now jumped in, Leaving you to wrest With demons to help embrace the sin You seem to like the best. Your claim for leave was so to break From supposed thoughtless following For to individual enlightenment take; A claim that takes some swallowing.

27

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Oh ye single soul who'd strayed Apart from Shepherd's flock: Toward single learning we're dismayed, Being founded on a rock Of solid-foundationed uniformity thought; We know the truth of life And of the painful purchase bought. We do not need the strife Of looking through the darkened mist To find the brightened way, We need only follow our leader's list To eventually have our day. Oh ye single soul who'd strayed Apart from Shepherd's flock: Alone your learning you have made, Studying the Maker's clock, Yet happier in life you seem to be, Now knowing who you are; Maybe not sheep, but lemmings we, Since you travel twice as far Than group-thought blindness leads us out, Almost as if you knew Seeing you learn single would make us shout: We want to learn single too! Oh ye single soul who'd strayed Apart from shepherd's flock: We've become sorry that we stayed In the mindless group and stuck To dogmas we'd never understood,

28

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love Just followed, without a care Of whether they were truly good. We moved not knowing where Our group's scurrying would lead us to, And what our end would be. But you single learning ever knew, And that knowing made you free.

29

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Flights of Fancy Flights of fancy, nevermind; Just moments of regret. Dreams collected, left behind For things not happened yet. Wishes made upon a star Now fallen from the sky; How degraded, fallen far From Heaven's gate am I. Lost in trudgery and chaff Which clouds here all our eyes From things meant to be a staff Support through all the lies. Yet it is within our dreams That we may take our flight; When we stretch, expand our seams And reach beyond our sight Then it is we truly live. Our time is not a waste Climbing for what none can give To drink what none can taste. Let us leave it up to them To spend their days less chancy; I will dream. None can condemn Nor cease my flights of fancy.

30

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Messages Lost Stories and tales Given for instruction Far too often are taken For more: Characters made For archetypal rule Are falsely given life. So before The stories and thoughts Can come to awareness They're pushed out by "history" And lost; Those meant to receive The message subtext Choose instead to praise people. The cost Making the men More than the message In importance to view As one, Leading the learner To lose the learning; And the opportunity to grow Is gone.

31

Intimidations Age, height, sex, race; Hair, eyes nose, face. Arms, legs, chest, body; Job, house, interests, hobby. So many things stopping us, So much fear holding us, Keeping us away. Many factors from which to choose, Numberless excuses we can use, All to prevent the day We could discover what it is That truly intimidates us: Peace, truth, joy, love; The possibility that above Someone one might want to see Us together, so that we May become our potential. Instead we direct our will To seek an escape From that we see as unknown, When we are so clearly shown Not merely a drape, But true essence of love's desire. Yet we stamp out that fire.

32

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Rejection, confusion, worry, grief, Lonely, no chance for relief. Fear of these' possibility Hamper our capability To overcome our many Intimidations. So any Chance of growing We remove from ourselves. But if we venture new delves Deep into knowing These intimidations are empty, Then we together can reach for happiness.

33

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Florescent Lighting Florescent lighting isn't real, A figment for our view. Empty, it sucks away our will, Removes skin pigment's hue. It takes away color's true look, Askew reflections left Distorted; flawed truth mistook As acceptance, bereft Of accurate foundations; just a lie. People, too, are paled By falsified light to human eye, Their life's view assailed And removed to show a walking corpse Where living man should be. This is how such lighting warps The view of what we see. Florescent lighting isn't real, The truth it's always fighting. Out from our lives we should steal And remove our florescent lighting.

34

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Vicarious Viewing The magic screen offers escape From the troubles of your world; A brief respite from all the pressures facing you Day by day, Hour by hour. Through the screen you enter lives Living beyond your own; Lives of excitement and adventure, Lives of joy and romance, Lives of the fiction Flickering in front of you As their sounds surround Your sittingplace, Pushing themselves into your soul. By living these viewed lives You finally find the joy you seek, Finally find the fulfillment you crave. But, as you sit there to live these lives You sit there by yourself, Alone; So the lives lived in vicarious viewing Become as empty As the one you sought to escape.

Moments of Peace In the day-to-day hustle of the crowd, All of us scurrying to get things done, I'm most grateful for those times When nothing is done. Those times when all things become Still, Frozen, Suspended in space And activity. These times are the scattered Moments of peace, The times when we can finally Pause, Take a breath, And actively think. In these moments We can become who we should be. For it is in these moments That we see who we truly are.

Talking to Your Picture I tell you all my problems. I tell you all my dreams. I tell you all my failures. I tell you all my schemes. I tell you all my everything, Up from the least desire To how your very image Makes my heart stir up with fire. And you listen politely to my words, Receive them with a smile; Not that you have a choice, For it turns out all the while I'm only talking to your picture, Speaking to deaf ears. My words drift into silence, And I'm the only one who hears.

39

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

At Least You Are Free Held here in pain, I remain your captive. You had seized my heart And drawn it close And given it warmth, But now you shun it, Hold it away And treat it with all despising. Yet even in this I remain your captive. At least you are free To flitter about In frivolous pleasantries. At least you can see What you've chosen to view In your many watching places. At least you've the liberty To enjoy all your life Unrestricted by emotion's tie. At least you are free. 40

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

But I remain a captive, Held in the pains Of true love discarded. Retained in the chains Of boundless affection That I myself could not loose. Unable to move From my solidified place Given for joy's fulfilling, I remain a captive. Held here in pain I remain your captive. You once seized my heart; Now it cannot let go From its perpetually-offered care. But holding so tight Tears through my being With agonies I must ever endure. Yet even in this I remain your captive. But at least you are free.

41

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

In My Dreams As within this daily trudge of life I walk alone, pressing on my way Through the many toils and the strife Placed upon me throughout the day. Through scholastic studies perplexing grip And employ's trudgery I must push on By myself, careful I don't slip Into lost and wasted, time just gone. I'm busy alone, here without a help Through the trouble that I may face; No one here the hear my cries or yelp For assistance in my place. Day by day I struggle all alone, For friend and companion I have none. But when I sleep at night and dream, I find you there, waiting up for me; And all the loneliness that may seem To plague me vanishes. I can see My love returned to me at last, Together again after so long. So we dance and sing and pray and fast As one, right where we belong. We kiss and cuddle and share our joy That from so long we have held back 42

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love Ourselves; self-restraint held to employ The more appropriate way to act. But now we are free, and here with ease Act so to receive our everlasting peace. While dreaming, we do fully share our love That we so much have longed to share. Accepting our true endorsement from above, To let us display how much we care. We enjoy our family in our proper way, Our children growing happier as they see Our love together growing every day; We finally living life that way it should be. Then, when alone, our love does all increase, Putting off the difficulties of the past All other cares of the world seem to cease, And we become united, one at last. In this we find our pathway is secure; Our love is fulfilled holy, clean and pure. Still, in the morn, when I begin to wake I look beside me to find you sleeping there In peace. The expression displayed surely seems As I stroke your hair and kiss your face You're truly laying here with me, and you care. But I know this happens only in my dreams. Perhaps one day my dreams will become reality.

Only the Friend Other people in her life Enter in And depart with frequency, But you remain ever present. While others get to catch her eye, Draw out her passing interest, You are there, A constant figure For her life, But you are only the friend. You discuss and share your innermost thoughts; You cry and laugh at your most harrowing troubles; You struggle together through your ongoing plights; And you find relief as one in reflection. But others get her affection; Others get to hold her for comfort and warmth; Others get to feel the passion in her kiss; Others get to receive her love; But not you.

44

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love You are only the friend. You must watch her Struggle with the less loving, The more manipulating and using, The predators out for their own glory Preying on her innocence and compassion; And you cry in pain every time You see another begin to pounce on their prey. But you cannot intervene, You cannot step in for her defense Because to do so would step in her life Beyond that much you are allowed. So you're held in your place. And you watch from afar. And you love her in quiet submission. For you are only the friend, Nothing more.

45

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

In That Day In that day When eyes finally open And the mind accepts, Then will roadblocks remove; Then will promised blessings of joy Reach our hearts and touch our souls. In that day When stubbornness fails And love is allowed, Then will pathways open up; Then will opportunities for growth eternal Extend to our inclusion and participation. In that day When pride at last falls And humility abounds, Then will peace come to rest; Then will companionship and unity transform us Into the greatest of families. In that day We will be together Once again.

46

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Venture of Love My hand into yours And yours into mine, Once twain were our hearts Now led to entwine For the first step of life To grow to divine As joy comes within our grasp. United in strength, Through struggle of life Together we'll o'ercome What pains and what strife We will become used to; In our world it'll be rife. But ours is of the strongest clasp. Our fingers together Interlaced all in one, A symbol of the joy That is certain to come. Through this new advent We'll gain greater sum, No longer withheld by any hasp, But loosed unto us from palace above Leading us now, together, in this venture of love.

47

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love

Watching You Drift into Sleep Watching you drift into sleep Is an experience that never could be equaled In peace and beauty. First you struggle against your weariness, Working in your might to remain attentive and aware. But tired's trembling blanket Continues to draw itself across your being, Multiplying the challenge Manifesting into a focused tension mask Molding your expression. This struggle intensifies As unconquerable unconsciousness Grows even stronger, Ever harder to resist, Until all at once You finally release; Your mask melts away Into a face of relaxation; You drift away, Allowing a new mask of calm To cover your whole being, Transforming your hands, Your look, Your very person Into the embodiment of peace.

48

Spot’s Finally Finished with Life, Lessons, and Love All that you are finally shows your release Of all the worries, All the burdens, All the responsibilities That weigh down in your life. All are released Until, Finally unburdened, Your true being is revealed, Displaying the truly wondrous beauty You are.
