ABOUT

THE SUPER Y LEAGUE The Super Y League, the country’s longest-running national youth league, provides approximately 500 teams and 10,000 players an unparalleled experience through its advanced player tracking, strong development resources and college soccer connections. Focusing on the important development ages of 10-18 for both boys and girls, the Super Y League features a summer platform, followed by an annual North American Championship in December. Over the past 17 years, the Super Y League has served as an established pathway to college and professional soccer as players are evaluated during the league’s Regional Scouting Series. A select group is also chosen for the highly-touted annual USL Experience, a multi-day residential event that follows a professional training format and an environment exclusively alongside one of the USL’s established organizations.

Q & A WITH U-17 HEAD COACH JOHN HACKWORTH John Hackworth, U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team Head Coach John Hackworth is the current Head Coach of the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team after having coached at Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union from 2012-14. Hackworth, a graduate of Wake Forest University, began his coaching career at his alma mater before being hired as the Head Coach of the University of South Florida. In 2002, he became an assistant coach for the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team, and he led the team as the Head Coach in the 2005 and 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Cups. Hackworth is currently preparing for the 2017 U-17 World Cup in India.

Super Y League: As the Head Coach of the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team, what advice in regards to personal development would you give to the more than 2,000 players taking part in the Super Y League Finals? John Hackworth: I would always advise them to play with a ball and work on the specific skills that they feel are important to their position. However, the two most important factors in their own development will be: (1) their ability to read the game – decisions – and (2) personal responsibility. Those two factors have wide-ranging possibilities, but it basically comes down to a young player learning and applying good individual habits that allow he, she to reach their full potential. An easy way to improve these two factors is to play pick-up games. This freedom to explore the game outside of a coach’s watchful eye is invaluable. With all your soccer experience, what messaging do you have for Super Y League coaches as they try to mold their players in a critical stage of their development? For training, create sessions with a specific objective in mind, but make sure that “the game” is always the center piece of any good training activity. I watch so many training sessions that are filled with drills, but the best way for players to learn is to play. That can be small-sided games to multiple small goals or simply to goal. Either way, teach them the objective you have in mind through more match-related activities. For games, I would encourage coaches to have a plan going into each game, both for the team and individual players. This way, it is much easier to manage an individual player’s minutes per match. Also, the sideline behavior of a coach is really important in terms of player development. Try not to joy stick them through every play or shout the obvious mistake. Young players will feed off a coach’s leadership, so the more confident and controlled you can be on the sidelines, the better. In order to be successful on the field, what aspect of the game do you think is the most important to master? Two aspects that go hand in hand: (1) ball control and (2) decision-making.

How would you recommend training this aspect? Through small-sided games. Among the Super Y League Finals participants in 2015 was DDYSC Wolves standout Lagos Kunga, who recently signed for Atlanta United FC Academy. With you being in Bradenton, are you looking among the contingent regarding the possibility of youth national team inclusions? We have an excellent scouting network that often goes unnoticed at times, but these scouts do a comprehensive job of providing our staff with weekly updates. Every time our staff watches a match, we look to see if there is a player with the key qualities that will allow them to be successful at the national team level. What are you looking for? That depends on the position. We have specific qualities that are required for various positions. From a basic viewpoint, we look for players that are skillful, intelligent and determined. At the U-17 level, what system or structure do you implement to best prepare your players for the college and professional level? Our primary objective at the U-17 level is player development, so it is much less about the system and much more about teaching the players the key principles of play that will allow them to be successful at the next level. That being said, our fundamental formation is a 4-3-3, but we switch it up – i.e. three in the back, two forwards, etc. – at various times. It depends on our tactical objectives for a specific amount of training time or an upcoming opponent. What is the structure of a U.S. U-17 camp? What training exercises do you focus on? We create a periodization plan both from a tactical and physical standpoint for each camp. We plan each training session and schedule matches to develop our style of play, while also allowing our staff the opportunity to evaluate each player thoroughly. Our training exercises are all related to the specific objective of that session and are set up mostly in match-related activities.

ABOUT REGIONAL SCOUTING SERIES

What? The Super Y League is thrilled to announce that the Regional Scouting Series will run for its third consecutive year in the summer of 2017. The event is the Super Y League’s unique and comprehensive soccer experience. Our programming is designed to facilitate the development of two distinct age groups: 10-12 and 13-16. Over the course of two days, SYL players will compete in a variety of game-related competitions and learn from some of the most experienced coaches in the youth, college and professional game.

Who? Regional Scouting Series is designed to facilitate the development of all Super Y players within the following two age divisions: 10-12 and 13-16. For both age groups, the event represents the first step in the Super Y League Elite Player Pathway. Players in the 10-12 age group learn and compete within Rene Meulensteen’s Technical Testing Program, with the highest-scoring players moving on to compete in the U.S. Technical Championships. For the 13-16 age group, the event presents a weekend full of individual attention and evaluation from college coaches. In addition to the college scouting opportunities available, players are evaluated for inclusion into the SYL National Player Pool and, potentially, USL Experience. In order to properly educate and evaluate our SYL players, we utilize coaches from successful college soccer programs, highly-qualified SYL directors, the national directors of Meulensteen North America and the directors of Soccer Genius metric technical testing.

Why? The Super Y League maintains a goal of providing clubs an unparalleled experience in youth soccer. The current U.S. youth soccer landscape provides that unparalleled experience for only a select few within the structure. As a result, the Super Y League decided to utilize its unique programming to provide that experience to all players within the league. The mission of the Super Y League Regional Scouting Series: putting our players in control of their careers. In order to carry out this mission, the SYL vision is to create a camp that provides every Super Y League player, regardless of development level, premier opportunities for education, evaluation and competition.

See what the Regional Scouting Series is all about!

When? The Regional Scouting Series will take place on the following dates:

Region I July 15-16

Region II July 29-30

Region III July 22-23

Locations will be announced soon. Learn more about the Regional Scouting Series at our table in the Player Village!

ABOUT THE USL EXPERIENCE

Since debuting in 2016, the USL Experience has served as a unique and elite multi-day residential event, providing an unprecedented look into the professional ranks while also connecting the Super Y League’s top young players to the professional level. FC Cincinnati hosted the inaugural USL Experience in April of 2016, delivering a comprehensive experience that included competitive match play, access to players and staff, additional educational programming, a stadium and facility tour, meals, lodging, training gear and much more. San Antonio FC will host the second edition of the USL Experience in April of 2017. Only the SYL’s elite individual performers identified and selected from the Regional Scouting Series events and SYL North American Finals will be able to take part in the USL Experience. Seventy players – 35 girls and 35 boys – were selected to attend the first USL Experience, which is sanctioned through the U.S. Olympic Committee and scouted by U.S. Soccer. Learn more about the USL Experience at the Super Y League booth in the Player Village!

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS FAIR NORTH AMERICAN FINALS PLAYER VILLAGE - FREE ADMISSION Over the years, the Super Y League has noticed a large disconnect between understanding a college soccer program and the university, itself. In order to further provide educational opportunities for our SYL families, we will be hosting our first North American Finals College Admissions Fair this year! The newest addition to the North American Finals offers players and families a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the institutions whose scouts attend our games. Located directly in our Player Village, our college admission fair will take place throughout the day for families to attend before, during and after matches. Come engage with the admissions representatives of universities you know (and don’t know)! Ask questions, take booklets, watch videos and make relationships with colleges that could eventually become YOUR school.

EVENT SCHEDULE SUNDAY, DEC. 11 | 7:30 P.M.

JASON RILEY:

PROFESSIONAL NUTRITIONIST AND STRENGTH/CONDITIONING COACH

IMG ACADEMY CLUBHOUSE - $25 Purchase Tickets Here If you are looking to learn a little bit more about how you should treat your body off the soccer field, you will not want to miss this seminar from Professional Nutritionist and Strength/Conditioning coach Jason Riley. Riley has trained many professional athletes, including Derek Jeter, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, and the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team. Riley earned an exercise science degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and served as the school’s athletic trainer for two years. In 2000, he moved to Bradenton, Florida, to take up residence at the IMG Academy as the associate director of performance at its International Performance Institute. “Foundations of Athletic Excellence” by Jason Riley CSCS, USAW, PES Today’s high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with proper athletic development. When we focus on the result rather than the process, we may never get the result that we want. We must develop a successful foundation in order to withstand the trials and tribulations that every athlete will face: losing, injuries, burnout and peer pressure. Do you want to be good, or do you want to be great? If you want to be great, we must develop the roadmap for success. The roadmap to success requires athletes to develop habits in discipline, preparation and hard work. We must develop a holistic view of athletic success as it relates to motivation, physical preparedness, nutritional habits and overall health and well-being. Some of the most successful athletes are like CEO’s of a large corporation, they view every facet of their job as an opportunity to grow and develop their craft to become the best they can be. This presentation will uncover some of the key principles of becoming a successful soccer player, athlete and teammate. We will look at the foundations of education in a variety of topics: • • •

Speed Development: We all know that speed kills, but how do we get faster? We will uncover the secrets to developing explosive speed on the field of play. Nutrition: What nutritional principles are you relying on in order to maximize your performance? Is it one of convenience? We will explore the principles of developing a strong foundation of consuming the correct nutrition to fuel your performance. Health and Well-Being: There are so many things that we do on a daily basis that may be robbing our bodies of proper recovery, health and well-being. We will explore a training monitor that will help keep you accountable to developing success on and off the field.

These are the same principles that Riley has used to develop Golden Glove Winners, Con Smythe Trophy recipients, NFL and MLB Hall of Famers and MLS All-Stars. What are you willing to sacrifice for long term success?
