PUBLIC LIBRARY

THARANGAMBADI, TAMIL NADU

In this project the concept is derived from the site, taking into account the shape of the same and its proximity to the sea. The size constraint of the plot is also taken into consideration.

SITE ANALYSIS

DESIGN ANALYSIS

The site measures as given in the diagram. There are 2 access roads - on the east and south sides. The other 2 sides are occupied by buildings. The place is very close to the sea and hence any building here should be of a limited height. On the one hand, the sea breeze coming from the east ensures a cool atmosphere. But the minerals and salts present in the wind increase the chances for corrossion of metals.

This project was given since the current library in Tharangambadi is in ruins. The main reason for the dilapidated state was the choice of materials they used - cement and RCC - which got exposed to the sea breeze and was corroded. The public library is of 10,000 books capacity. Along with the reading spaces, a cafe is also provided for tourists since the plot is next to the beach.

BUILDING FORM The building form was generated according to the shape of the site. It consists of 2 cuboid blocks with one having a void.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN 1. Use of courtyards to facilitate stack effect 2. Use of clerestory lighting. The openings for the same were shaded by extruding the surrounding brickwork and using creeper plants. This extrusion also acts as shading device for the window beneath 3. Use of white reflective ceiling paint inorder to reflect direct radiation. 4. Materials like sandstone and brickwork are used and any kind of metal work is avoided
