Creative Options FOR FURNITURE HANDLES

I

t is surely possible to obtain furniture handles in home décor stores, but wouldn’t it be so much more satisfying to make them yourself? Below are some ideas of how you can get creative with the handles in your interior!

HANDLES MADE FROM RUBBER TOYS: When the children grow up, toys become unnecessary objects in the home. Often, these are stuffed toys and small figurines of animals or superheroes. They can transform into unique furniture handles! Simply paint them in the desired colour and glue them in place of the handle.

HANDLES MADE FROM ROPE: If the interior of the room is in the naval style, then the furniture handles can be made of rope. The easiest and most stylish way that you can secure the rope is to drill a hole in the handle, pass the rope through and tie knots on either side. If you would rather avoid drilling the furniture, then you can wrap the rope (dipped in glue) around old or inconspicuous handles.

HANDLES MADE FROM OLD UTENSILS:

HANDLES MADE FROM LEATHER STRIPES OR BELTS:

Don’t have ideas of what to do with your old utensils? Turn them into handles! This will be effective if the forks and spoons are made of aluminum and are bendable. This option will be perfect for the kitchen cupboards.

Handles made from leather stripes look very stylish and are pleasant to the touch. Every handle made in this manner will require two bolts with a neat “hat.” You can slice your belt into stripes and attach either side to each bolt. Alternatively, you can wrap the stripes around the handle in the case that it is round. It is a good idea to stitch the edges to create a neater look.

HANDLES MADE FROM STONES: This option will work harmoniously with wooden furniture; it will have a natural and beautiful look. In order to create such handles, you will need a stone approximately the same size as the handle and that has at least one flat surface. The metal base for mounting the handle should be attached with strong glue.

HANDLES MADE FROM WINE CORKS: In order to create this type of handle, glue the cork to a metal base and secure it to the handle. This option will work effectively in just about any interior. You can even make these handles for the wine cellar!

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

HANDLES MADE FROM LARGE BUTTONS: Buttons will be a great replacement of handles on large cupboards in the kitchen or on drawers in the children’s room. You can get creative when choosing the colour and size of the buttons to make the overall effect more playful and interesting. Handles can be made from absolutely anything, even from materials that you considered garbage. So in the search for new furniture handles, start by taking a look around – you never know what you may find!

Tropical Style still. They are warm, pleasant and emphasize small joys of life and total relaxation. This style is for those who enjoy steel band rhythms; who have always been interested in the history and culture of the South Pacific; whose favourite cocktail is always decorated with an umbrella; who mark their calendar with special dates such as the Brazilian carnival; and who have no doubt that palms can grow in cold climates.

MOSQUITO NETTING

C

alm and natural, with a slightly exotic flair, the tropical décor style exudes warmth and beckons to a relaxing lifestyle. Lazy and carefree, this interesting style resembles a melting pot with ingredients such as elegance, simplicity, exotic motifs and unlimited sunlight. Tropical interiors are similar to an eternal vacation where time slows down and the crazy pace of modern life comes to a stand-

What can be more romantic than a bed encircled in white mosquito netting? Regardless of the fact that this lighter version of the canopy was born out of practical considerations, it creates a tropical mood even when there are no insects in your bedroom. Try this: Even if your bed does not look like a classic frame that calls for a weightless veil of a canopy, you can always create a simple canopy using lightweight fabric and affixing the centre of it to the ceiling over the centre of the bed and above the corners of the bed. Or just buy a ready-made canopy of mosquito netting.

VIVID PRINTS Mix a traditional floral pattern with wavy lines and stern stripes to obtain the craziest colour schemes. Choose large and well-defined prints like palm leaves or other such tropical designs. Try this: Create a balance of solid and patterned - use the brightest colours imaginable but keep the number of different colours down. The hues to mix in order to obtain your tropical cocktail may include dark green reminiscent of palm leaves, rich red recalling the brightness of fuchsia, the vivid yellow of tropical flowers, and the intense blue of the ocean surface. Mix your cocktail – but stop short of shaking it!

WEAVED TEXTURES The tropical style celebrates natural textures: jute, hemp, basketry, bamboo, etc. Choose woven and rattan furniture, boldly weaved rugs, and baskets of all shapes and sizes as accents. Instead of a painting or a

photograph, cover your walls with straw mats or a few straw hats that will emphasize the exotic atmosphere of the place. Try this: Avoid decorating your dwelling with woven textures from top to bottom. Start small. Create one accent wall papered in natural algae or made of straw rug panels.

TROPICAL PLANTS Luxurious wild vegetation is what makes tropics what they are. Populate your home with live potted tropical plants – just make sure it does not become an equivalent of the Amazon jungle. Try this: Good news! There is a long list of tropical plants that will survive outside of tropics, in your home. Among these are philodendrons, crotons, and a whole score of other plants. Just read the instructions carefully!

EXOTIC WOODS Brazilian nut, teak, and other tropical woods are ideal for your chosen decorating style. Try this: The whole beauty of the tropical wood is in its natural pattern – waves, stripes, veins, and spots, so do not interfere with all this variety and let it bloom in the décor of your home.

LIVING IN THE OPEN AIR In the tropics, the interior and exterior seamlessly converge. Of course, living in Canada, as we do, we cannot stay outside day and night all year round, but it is always reasonable to come up with a way to integrate the inside and outside themes in a room’s décor. Place your living room furniture in such a way as to create a feeling of a spacious patio where it is easy to enjoy the warm sun and keep cool with ice-cold drinks. Try this: There is no need to build an addition to your home to create a feeling of a tropical lanai. Stained paper, wooden shutters, and room dividers of natural fabric – these are the tools to help you define various sections in your living space. Now, are you ready to start on an exotic voyage without leaving your home?

THE INDUCTION COOKER: FIVE MYTHS

T

he induction cooker is a relatively new invention in the realm of kitchen appliances. It looks much like the ordinary glass-ceramic cooker, except that instead of having heating coils under the burner, it has coils that create an electromagnetic field. As a result, the cook top surface does not heat up – all of the warmth is transferred directly to the dishes. Despite the conveniences, induction cookers have, unfortunately, not yet received a mass recognition from consumers. This article presents several myths about these appliances.

Myth 1: THE INDUCTION COOKER HAS A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON ONE’S HEALTH This myth is based on the belief that the electromagnetic field negatively impacts health. To refute this claim, research companies provide the following data: the intensity of a magnetic field in a conventional hair dryer is 2000 mT while at the cooking surface it is only 22 mT. A plate with an electric field can only start to have a negative impact if you continuously interact with it at a distance of 10 cm above the surface. At a distance of 50 cm,

6

ALL ABOUT HOME

the field is insignificant. It also has no impact on the quality of the food.

Myth 2: YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE ALL DISHES FOR THE INDUCTION COOKER The dishes should truly be compatible with the induction heating technology; for this purpose, the bottom of pots and pans should have a material that has ferromagnetic properties. These properties are present in steel and cast iron, and even a layer of enamel will not become a hindrance. However, some types of stainless alloys may not be suitable. Test your dishes by bringing a magnet in contact with the bottom. If it sticks, then the dish is suitable. It turns out that you will not be able to use only glass and aluminum on the induction cooker; however, even in this case, there are options. You can buy special discs that are attached to the bottom and can make any dish suitable. If you prefer aluminum or ceramic pans, there are companies that make them with a thin magnetized layer. If you have the means and desire, you can obtain dishes made specifically for induction cookers. Such dishes have ideal thermal conductivity on the bottom and do not make noise when heated via induction.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Myth 3: IF YOU LEAVE ANY METALLIC OBJECT ON THE INDUCTION PLATE, IT WILL HEAT UP Even if you place an object with magnetic properties on the plate, it will not necessarily heat up. For example, if it is a fork instead of a pan, the induction plate will not react. The induction plates are programmed to recognize the diameter of objects. Every plate has slightly different diameters it recognizes; for some, the minimum is 8 cm, for others – 12 cm.

Myth 4: YOU CAN GET A BURN FROM AN INDUCTION PLATE Since the material that will get heated is not glass-ceramic panels, but the dishes, the only scenario where you can get a burn is from the dish or its contents. Although the dish transmits heat to the surface below it, the glass-ceramic material of the plate cools very quickly once the dish is removed.

Myth 5: AN INDUCTION PLATE IS VERY EXPENSIVE It makes sense to compare the price of the induction cooker to the conventional glassceramic heating coil. Although the price of the former is higher, it is not critical.

How to Live in Florida and Make Money When You Are Retired!

W

hat type of Real Estate Investment is suitable for seniors? How can you earn passive income after retirement? In the next 20 years the amount of people who reach the age of retirement will increase by 10,000 every day! Let us view a typical case: Meet Maria and Paul – they have been married for more than 40 years. In a couple of months, they retire and this scares them very much. They do not have any savings, except for the paid-off house in which they live in alone. When they both worked, their family income was more than $10,000 per month, which allowed them to pay for all of their expenses. Next year, their income will be in the form of a pension, which will be just over $1,000. This is much less than the usual income they are accustomed to. Yes, after the sale of the house they will have about $650,000 on hand, but with the expenses that they have, this money will not even be enough for 10 years. Plus, they will have to part with the comfort of a private home and move into a condo with a large maintenance fee. They still want to travel, and possibly spend more time in a warmer climate, but how they can afford it with their pension? How do they ensure a decent retirement after so many years of full time work? Real estate prices in the city where they live do not allow them to buy anything after they sell their house except for a condo or apartment. Even if they rent it out for $3,000 a month, after paying taxes and maintenance fees they are left with just over $1,000 a month. The question is, where do they live themselves? Looking at the local magazine, Maria and Paul come across an article about the secrets of real estate investing in the state of Florida, written by USA MARKET GROUP. After calling they set up an appointment with the company, which specializes in real estate investments with a passive income. They got all the information

regarding the procedure of buying a property, what type of investment suits them best, and why investing in Vacation Rentals is the most profitable in Florida. They chose the option they liked best, and after two months they became proud owners of two real estate properties in the sunny state of Florida. The first property, worth $65,000 USD, is a 2-room apartment at a 55+ community in the chic suburb of Miami near the ocean: Boca Raton. The complex offers a lot of amenities including swimming pools, fitness and golf club, tennis courts, restaurants, billiards, and a library. Expenses for the apartment – including maintenance and taxes – will be only $500 USD per month. The second property is a detached house with 3 bedrooms and a swimming pool in the popular tourist city of Fort Lauderdale worth $600,000. Within a month, USA MARKET GROUP prepared the house for earning income through the Vacation Rental business which included repairs, furniture, photos, and creating the listing. Their first clients appeared within in a week. Having reserved the house for one month, they

transferred $7,000 USD to the account of our couple. After paying property management fees, utilities and taxes, Maria and Paul are left with $5,000 USD. As the cost of servicing their apartment is only $500, this leaves them with $4,500 of personal income! All business activities and services including advertising and property management were taken over by USA MARKET GROUP. The cost of gas, cars, food and entertainment in Florida is also lower, which gives Maria and Paul the opportunity to save additional money plus their pension. Now they can go on cruises every two months worry-free, which they have dreamed of for a long time. Their house in Florida also grows in price around 5% per year, which in 5 years will give them an additional capital gain of $100,000 that they can obtain through refinancing. With this money they will buy a studio unit near the ocean, which will bring them $1,500 of extra income a month. If you also want to live your retirement in sunny Florida without thinking how to pay bills and with an income you deserve to enjoy your life, give us a call! If you plan to buy an investment property, or already have a property that doesn’t earn a similar income for you - don’t wait until you’re in retirement. Proven Styling Tips to Make a Lasting Impression

T

he trend of home staging has picked up momentum in recent years. As a Toronto interior stylist, I can certainly appreciate the basic principles behind a well-staged home, whether you’re planning to stay or sell the place. The #1 idea that you should always keep in mind is that you only have one chance to make a good first impression.

A neutral colour palette is easy to work with and has wide appeal. This applies to your walls and furniture - particularly the big, expensive items that won’t be frequently replaced. Then, incorporate colour through your accessories.

TIP: Artwork is a great way to incorporate colour without commitment! When planning where to place furnishings and accessories - like art - look for the

Here are some of my favourite styling tips to ensure you make a lasting impression, for all the right reasons. Step one is to view your home from the street. What’s the first thing you see? Bingo - the front door! The way your front door looks can either seem inviting to guests or cause them to run in the opposite direction! Choose a vibrant colour that sets your home apart from the rest, and ensure the hardware is bright and buffed. Finish the entry with colourful potted plants on either side, for the ultimate welcome. Next, assess everything you see inside the home, from the walls and furnishings to the accessories, because even the seemingly minor details matter.

room’s natural focal point, and focus attention on that area. A focal point is a place for the eye to rest. This could be a fireplace, a window or an interesting architectural feature. If your room doesn’t have one, make your own! Stand in the doorway, look into the space and see where your eyes naturally land. This is most likely your room’s focal point, and a good place to focus your furniture arrangement.

ered at a variety of heights - floor, tabletop, sconce and ceiling.

Now that you’ve identified the obvious attention-grabbers in your space, consider the background elements such as lighting and flooring.

Lastly, plan your accessories. Select only the pieces that make you smile, help tell your story, or inspire you in some way.

The most beautiful furnishings and artwork will be lost without proper lighting. A good lighting plan includes elements of ambient, task and accent lighting, lay-

For the floor, stylists like myself use rugs to highlight, increase visual impact, or to create division and definition within an open-concept layout. With that said, resist the urge to overuse rugs. They’ve certainly become a trendy piece, and are even appearing in layers, with one overlapping another.

A beautifully styled space is a careful balance between the big, obvious pieces and the small, subtle details. If you walk into a room and something seems “off,” explore the elements above and you’ll likely find the missing link. When all the elements in a space work together, a room becomes “home.”

One of my go-to tricks is to arrange accessories in odd numbers. There’s something visually pleasing about groupings of three or five. To add more interest, use books or stacked magazines to vary heights.

HOME-STAGING: The Secrets of Quick Sales

H

ello, I am Natalia Slobidker!

As part of the experiment, we went shopping at a store which people of any level of income can afford: Walmart.

I am a professional full-time realtor; I specialize in real estate pre-sales, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks at a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum benefit, in any real estate transaction. We have discussed the first and most important rule when preparing to sell the home: decluttering. We also mentioned the second rule of maximum depersonalization; making sure that your habits and lifestyle are not “readable” to strangers.

We bought a new set of accessories for the bathroom, personal and bath towels, and baskets of different sizes to organize objects. hastily abandoned by the owner in the morning before going to work. Inside the drawers are household chemicals and hygiene products.

We organized everything from the countertop on a functional basis into two boxes. The drawer’s contents were put into identical baskets, the hair dryer, towels, and clothes were hid in a drawer, and the trinket organizer found its new place on the inside of the door.

The third stage is preparing the space for an open house; that is, showcasing.

The intermediate step has been completed. Below is the result.

I always do this in two steps. To begin, we come up with a way to organize what is left of the clutter due to daily use but is not appropriate for display.

Please note – we left room inside the drawers for the boxes that are displayed on the counter in the picture.

This process is organized in such a way that within a few minutes it is possible to transform a regular living house into a model home. After the magazine’s release, I received many letters and among them many requests to show the entire process step-by-step.

After talking with my client, I learned that there is not much left to declutter since she uses everything on the counter top on a daily basis. Thus, we immediately started with the second stage. She kindly agreed to let me use her bath for our objectives and show each step of the process.

However, even if the buyers arrive and the hostess did not have time to place the box in the cupboard, the bathroom still has a neat appearance both on the outside and the inside. Yes, yes, people do look in the kitchen and bathroom drawers.

I decided to show this through an example of a bathroom because most of them are set up similarly and therefore, my recommendations will be helpful to a greater number of people. To illustrate my point, I will use the coincidental request of a client to prepare their bathroom for showcasing! This is how the bathroom looked like when I saw it in my client’s home for the first time. A chaotic display of a bunch of bottles, creams, and cosmetics; the hairdryer on the towel rail, door with hooks from which hung clothes and towels, and an organizer for small items on the opposite wall (you can see it in the mirror). Generally speaking, a normal household bathroom: Adjacent to the vanity is a bath, on top of which is a baby bath along with things

The second stage is the organization of everyday life in the period of a sale. Since an inexperienced person may make a mistake when choosing the color scheme for decorating, I decided to go for a win-win option: a combination of black and white.

a change, but you cannot pin-point it, email me at info@topdecor.ca or call at 416-333-7418 and I will do my best to answer as many questions as I can in the next issue.

Selling? Buying? Investing? Do not have time to seek out the experts? Everything that you may need at any point in the deal-making process: under one roof.

With a flick of the wrist, the bathroom turns spotless in seconds. You can be sure that such a room will not cause negative feelings in potential buyers.

Minimum chores, maximum profit.

NATALIA SLOBIDKER

Note the boxes, which stood on the table, are now hidden away. The scented candles on a silver tray exude a discreet flavor and serve as a color accent. Please note that for bathroom areas with more a pronounced character, this blackand-white color scheme may not work, so be careful.

HELPERS IN THE KITCHEN

– THE BUILT-IN OVEN

T

he kitchen oven is a true modern embodiment of the home hearth, and one should pay careful attention when obtaining one. A comfortable oven helps prepare delicious dishes and pastries; it becomes an irreplaceable appliance in any home. There is astonishing amount of variations of built-in ovens in terms of style, colour and originality. The modern electric and gas built-in ovens have specific technical and design features as well as a wide range of functions which are very important to pay attention to when choosing the appliance.

THE OVEN DOOR: The amount of glass on the oven door is an indicator to how strongly the exterior of the oven and the air in the interior will heat up. Often, ovens are equipped with two or three layers of glass; some models have four. The more glass on the door, the higher the price of the appliance and the safer the appliance is to use. If the oven is built-in into the central part of the column cabinet, the amount of glass and the presence of a cooling fan are of upmost importance. These are the factors that will protect the furniture from excess heat or deformations. The material of the door and switches affects the longev-

14

ALL ABOUT HOME

ity of the appliance and the comfort of use. For example, some models have handles that look metallic but in reality are made of plastic. On one hand, this is comfortable because the handle does not get excessively hot and hence, you are safe from burns. On the other hand, if constantly exposed to high temperatures, the plastic will not last very long. The material of the door itself depends more on aesthetic factors; it can be fully glass or metal with a glass insertion.

GUIDE RAILS AND TRAYS: It is most convenient to use grills and baking trays on telescopic rails; they are easily and safely retractable, giving you the opportunity to check the readiness of the dish or add ingredients. Some models of built-in ovens are equipped with rails on multiple levels, whereas others only have rails on one or two levels. Furthermore, in different models the telescopic guide rails extend to different lengths – either completely or partly. In ovens without telescopic rails, a more progressive option is the presence of special metal holders on the side walls that allow the easy and convenient movement of trays and grates. The most uncomfortable option is when there are grooves at different levels on the walls. It becomes quite difficult to move baking sheets as there are jams and an increased likelihood of dropping the tray.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

THE AMOUNT OF HEATING MODES: It is considered that the more heating options there are in an oven, the easier it is to cook in it. However, having too many options is a simple marketing tactic used by producers. The standard amount of heating options is present in any modern model; the presence or absence of extras can be viewed philosophically. The presence of convection can be easily determined visually; at the back wall of some ovens there is a built-in ventilator that evenly distributes hot air throughout the oven. This provides a more even and quick preparation of any dish.

THE TIMER: This comfortable function is present in the majority of ovens. However, the type of timer and the principles behind its function vary in different models. There are sound timers that only give the signal but in no way affect the regime of cooking. There are also timers that can be shutdown (with or without sound) that can be programmed to turn off the heating of the oven. Every option has advantages and disadvantages; thus, the decision depends on the type of user and personal preferences.

LIGHT YOUR WAY THIS SUMMER by Linda Mazur

W

arm outdoor weather is finally here and you can once again enjoy spending time in the backyard! All of the efforts you put into creating your backyard oasis are now rewarding you with lush gardens and a space you can enjoy; however, an outdoor space cannot be truly complete without proper lighting.

When planned properly, exterior entryway lights can highlight architecture features, whether at the front or rear of your home. There are a multitude of styles and lighting options available from contemporary to traditional pieces. First, de-

cide which styles are best suited for your home’s architecture and then consider the placement options for your lighting. Wall sconces may be the most suitable or perhaps ceiling mounted fixtures, or a combination of both. Recessed soffit

As a designer, I find there’s always a lure to working outdoors! A great outdoor living space not only adds value to your home, but it also brings enjoyment and value to your life. Our time outdoors in the summer is so short-lived; however, with the addition of proper lighting you can extend your stay to really soak in the relaxation and pleasures that the summer months offer. Proper illumination is vital for obvious reasons such as safety and ease of mobility. Whether it’s an entryway, pathway lighting, recessed deck lighting, a security light or beautiful sconces outside your doorway, we require basic lighting to assist us in the dark. However, good outdoor lighting also carries an aesthetic value.

lights may be another option and are a great way to “wall-wash” your house, casting a warm glow and highlighting the architectural details of your home. Accent lighting is also important when planning the illumination of your outdoor space and is usually used to highlight a particular feature. In the case of outdoor lighting, consider adding lighting your garden beds, trees, architectural features like pergolas, a wall feature or water feature. Your pool is also a place to consider adding accent lighting to create a show piece once the sun has set. When you’ve added lighting to all of your key areas don’t forget the small finishing touches of decorative lighting to accessorize. This could be a grouping of multilevel lanterns or torches. The addition of a beautiful and trendy outdoor gas fireplace from companies like Kastle Fireplaces and a vintage chandelier that you could hang in your pergola or gazebo could be just the thing to complete the look.

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND: - Remember pathway lighting needs to be staggered and well balanced to avoid the “landing strip” effect.

- For narrow stairs, one step light centered in each riser may be sufficient; for wider steps you may require a series of lights along each riser. - Outdoor illumination is important but don’t forget to consider the view from inside when planning. - Outdoor lights can be solar or put on timers to avoid over usage - Control your lights from any location with the easy-to-use smart home automation system Control4. You will be able to turn on all of your lights with a single touch. You can also add more technology to your outdoors in the future such as cameras or an irrigation system. - Lighting can seem like a daunting task so consider hiring a professional designer like myself or an entire landscape firm like TriMatrix to help you “light the way.”
