Sensible people often find interiors in Pop Art style shocking. The style that was on the crest of its popularity in the 1960s is now experiencing a revival offering a glimpse into the world of popular art and mass production. This style is characterized by the use of replication techniques, pronounced unconcern, , and even spiritual atrophy, by copying the style of glossy magazines that promote consumerism. Home interiors decorated in Pop Art style carry glossy shine, flamboyant details, and flashy colours. Such a dwelling is not for everyone. To avoid psychological discomfort of constantly experiencing this slightly crazy atmosphere, one needs to be either a veritable aesthete or a conscious adept of such a lifestyle.

Changing your home decor to Pop Art style requires huge efforts. One of the main purposes is to convey the very spirit of Pop Art through colour solutions and proper selection of materials and accessories. Use vibrant acid colours and don’t worry about their compatibility. Pop Art style does not care about traditional such trivialities as the concept of harmony. A popular way to decorate walls is to paint them in different colours: one wall has to be a neutral light colour playing a calming role in the midst of the colour orgy. Other walls are done in much brighter hues. Ideally, one wall should become a gallery of popular art by being decorated with a replicated design based on a popular object, anything from Coke bottles to US dollar bills.

or glass add to the general mood. Because the Pop Art ideas are incompatible with our traditional concepts of living space organization, one needs to revise his ideas of classic sets of furnishings. Pop Art rejects all those bourgeois cabinets and chests preferring various niches and built-in cabinets, usually with no doors. Pop Art furniture has to be bizarre yet of simple shapes. The process of selecting gaudy plastic chairs and tables, round sofas and armchairs in contrasting colours, low ottomans, shelving, and coffee tables requires careful approach because no traditional furniture can fit into the atmosphere of Pop Art.

It goes without saying that the preferable material for Pop Art style is plastic that does not even try to disguise itself as a nobler substance. Artificial materials are the best to convey the style spirit. Therefore, the more pronounced its artificiality is the better. Neon night lighting fixtures of unusual shapes with shades made of plastic, paper,

On the other hand, there are neither limitations nor firm rules where Pop Art space planning solutions and decorative objects are concerned. This fact allows for utmost creativity in fashioning your home decor. The cornerstones of Pop Art style are freedom of expression, the tongue-in-cheek approach, and the desire to shock and astonish. If you possess such qualities, they will help you create an unusual and unforgettable living space.

of time. For those who prefer gradual transition from one strip to the next, the edges can be concealed with wood railings. Such a decor element will create an impression of an Oriental bamboo hut. What can be better than this unusual, fine-looking, practical, and breathing material!

Bamboo has been a popular interior design material for quite a long time as part of the penetration of Eastern philosophies and lifestyles into the Western life. Baskets, pictures frames, lampshades, furniture, as well as floor coverings, rugs, and window

shades, objects made of bamboo have become an integral part of furniture showrooms, building materials warehouses, and home accessories stores. Because bamboo is an extremely fast growing plant its wood does not accumulate harmful substances. Great decorative features as well as its ecological qualities justify the recognition and popularity of bamboo in interior design. Bamboo floors last for years due to their durability and thickness. Besides, bamboo wood is resistant to temperature changes, liquids, and time. It does not need special chemicals for its upkeep – because of its uniform structure all it needs is dusting. Another common decorative item is bamboo wallpaper. Due to its natural origins, bamboo wallpaper comes in various thicknesses, depending on the thickness of the fibre, and contains a number of hues. Such wallpaper will not fade even when exposed to strong sunlight for longer periods

Bamboo fibres are also used in textile making. The soft and thin air-light natural fabric is comparable in its characteristics to silk and, the same way as the latter, is successfully used for bed linens. Such linens are breathable, moisture absorbing, and keep both their appearance and their bactericide qualities, no matter how many times they are laundered. Even here, we cannot end the enumeration of bamboo uses. Fishing enthusiasts know how great lightweight and long-lasting bamboo rods are. Bamboo has also been widely used in furniture manufacturing. You have often seen bamboo tables, sofas, armchairs, shelves, and whatnots. Room dividers, curtains, rugs, baskets, placemats, trays, dishes, lampshades made of bamboo add coziness and exotic flair to home decor. Women have greatly appreciated lovely bamboo earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, and for the high technology enthusiasts the market offers such unexpected items as bamboo computer and cell phone cases. Bamboo is a material so unique and universal that it can be used in any field. Try to find the place for it in your own home and see for yourself how stylish, handsome and trendy it looks.

For a contemporary look use glass and metal or select kitchen furniture in vivid colours – this will improve your mood and… your appetite as well!

Children’s World

Small does not need to be uncomfortable. Sometimes we live a happy life in a tiny apartment and can be dissatisfied in a sprawling house. If your living space happens to be small, you can make it more comfortable and good looking by following a few design rules regarding the main living zones.

How to Add Space to a Small Living Room A podium in a room changes its appearance. Use it as a relaxation zone, with a seating furniture arrangement, a bracketmounted TV set, and a few bookshelves. Throw a colourful blanket and a few brightly coloured cushions on the sofa. Build the podium with drawers that will be hiding underneath. A wall sconce or a floor lamp will make this area especially cozy and romantic. If low ceilings feel depressing, correct this impression with vertically striped wallpaper.

Even in the smallest apartment with a little effort on your part your child can have her own little world. Buy furniture that creates a “house” for the young one by combining a “bedroom” on the “second floor” with a desk or play space underneath.

Transforming a Tiny Kitchen The most important space in the kitchen is its so-called working triangle: the stove, the sink, and the fridge. Placed in the correct order, they will add comfort to a tiniest kitchen. If complete remodeling of your kitchen is out of the question, try the next best step: avoid wall cabinets - they create a stifling feeling. Instead, hang open shelves that will show your beautiful dishes to advantage and display accessories that add individuality. Furnish the lower cabinets with sliding-out sections that promote the maximal use of the space.

Use a table to create a “house” for the child. This is easy – just hang pieces of fabric from the table top to the floor on all four sides. It will serve as a toy storage if you put a couple of colourful boxes for your kid’s little treasures or as a haven– just drawing the “curtain” closed will be enough if the child want to be alone for a while.

Little Tricks for a Little Bathroom If the look of your bathroom makes you sad, try to “colour” it with the help of regular ceramic tiles laid in a chessboard pattern. The ceiling fixture will add shine to the glass mosaic that you may use in the seams. Just a little magic – and you are happy and relaxed in your tiny space.

Thinking of managing your energy costs? Tired of receiving an ever higher hydro bill month by month? If you answered yes to either question, look no further! In 2005, the provincial government introduced net metering regulations that allow Ontario homeowners to send electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar energy to the province’s grid for a credit towards their hydro costs. The more electricity your system produces the more savings you receive! Electricity companies frequently argue that participating in netmetering programs can affect the customer’s bottom line because such participants do not generate or pay enough to maintain the cost of the grid. However, other reports show that net metering is actually beneficial to utility companies. Through net metering, utility companies avoid high energy costs and line losses as well as capacity upgrades and transmission costs.

charges such as delivery charge, regulatory charge, and debt-retirement charge apply only to your net consumption. Logitest Solar offers a variety of solar panels so that any rooftop can be used for the net metering solar PV project. Our team of specialists will design a solar PV system best fitted into the available roof space for the maximum production and an appealing look. We will make sure that your solar PV system meets all the requirements of your local distribution company (LDC), the electrical safety authority (ESA), and the local municipality.

In the United States, as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, all public electric utilities are now required to make net metering available to their customers upon request. In Canada, seven provinces offer net metering programs. They are Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. With net metering your hydro bill will show the difference between the amounts of energy your solar PV system exported and the amount of energy your household consumed. All of the regulated

is one of the main tools of lighting design can be used to correct drawbacks of natural lighting.

Lighting design is one of the newest fields in interior design that allows to achieve the best visual result with the help of various lighting solutions. Lighting design is based on the whole slew of optical characteristics including optimal brightness, correct colour rendering, skilled distribution of illumination, and shadow creation. Of course, the principal tool of lighting design is light itself that generates a certain impression of the space, colour scheme, shape, and texture of every object. Lighting design has yet another purpose and that is solving not just esthetic but functional issues as well in regards of the room’s purpose. Artificial lighting that

Correct lighting is very important when designing spaces because it can produce certain moods (for example, relaxing – for living spaces or mobilizing – for working rooms), visually change dimensions and proportions of the space, create necessary accents in the interior style by emphasizing its advantages and hiding disadvantages. Look, for example, at the famous chiaroscuro, or the harmony of light and shadow. Various types of lighting differently affect the way humans perceive colour and its shades. Incandescent and halogen bulbs intensify warm colours and conceal or even, sometimes, distort cool ones making blues look greenish. Daylight bulbs, on the contrary, intensify cool shades and diminish perception of warm colours. As a general rule, interiors in light and warm tones do not require too much lighting while darker and cooler shades in room design call for strong illumination. A skilled play of coloured lighting can create special effects. Various shades of red lighting in the room generate romantic mood, orange has a reviving effect, pink

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

hues makes faces look healthier and fresher, while blues and greens have a calming result. One needs to remember though that coloured lighting is wrong for rooms whose function requires utmost natural lighting, like, for example, bathrooms, the kitchen work zone, or the den. Some lighting design tricks serve to play with the visual characteristics of space. For example, it is possible to visually modify the dimensions of a narrow and long room by directing bright light upon its furthest wall while illuminating the other three walls uniformly. A small square room will look elongated with only one wall illuminated. A long narrow hallway can be “made” wider with the help of longitudinal illumination along the whole perimeter. A low ceiling will look higher if you place lighting all around the room and hide it behind a false panel – thus reflected lighting will visually raise the ceiling. On the other hand, if you want to visually diminish the height of the room, direct its lighting downward and towards the walls. Changing the angle of illumination you can create and illusion of a slanted ceiling. To draw attention to a certain element of decor, place it in the limelight of a focused beam.

Decorative porcelain elephant families, exquisite figurines, and whimsical bud vases used to be a staple in every house and apartment not so long ago but soon they have all but gone out of style. Lately, though, they have been coming back with a vengeance. The first clay ornaments in the shape of humans and animals appeared during the Stone Age in what is now Europe. Ancient Greeks started decorating figurines with gold and colour paints back in the 5th to 4th centuries BC. Such ornaments pleased to the eye and had a sacral meaning embodying various gods of the Olympus. The 6th and 7th centuries saw the invention of porcelain in China. The new material was used to create real porcelain figurines. During the ten plus centuries that followed,

Europeans simply made copies of the exquisite dolls delivered from the Orient. They were made of soft porcelain invented during the Medici rule in 1575. Nevertheless, these figurines did not gain great popularity because of their yellowish tint. Only in 1735, Meissen factory in Germany manufactured the first real figurines made in Europe. These statuettes were expensive and as such became yet another status symbol. The more porcelain human and animal figurines the host placed on his dinner table during a feast, the more prominent the reception was considered. A collection comprising 137 figurines received by British ambassador in Poland Sir Charles Williams from King Augustus the Third of Poland in 1748 is the largest known set of porcelain statuettes.

Nowadays, the art of statuettes and whole scenes in porcelain has become popular once again. The artists’ skills are so high that the figurines look alive. Of course, in the century of advanced technologies and preferences for such minimalistic styles as hi-tech, a depiction of a cute shepherdess or a lithe ballerina seems grotesque sitting among modern gadgets on a computer table or the top of a plasma TV set. Yet, for those who prefer warmth and calm of the times long gone such a touching accessory is just what is needed. The most famous artworks in porcelain adorn numerous collections of the best museums in the world. So why shouldn’t you use an exquisite and elegant figurine to adorn your personal living space?

Our product selection includes turn-key design, production and installation of stretch ceilings, decorative suspended and 3D panels, boxes for walls, wide format prints on walls or ceilings and stretch ceiling accessories in different shapes and formats. Stretch ceilings are considered a new technology in the construction, decoration and renovation industry as the ultimate ceiling solution and were created mainly as a solution for damaged ceilings. Today, it is the most versatile, practical and stunning product for interior design. It saves energy by acting as insulation for heat or cold, prevents condensation by creating an air lock buffer within the structure and, of course, there is no need to paint the ceiling ever again. It is the fastest way to furnish any room without prior preparation of the ceiling’s main surface. It is an energy-saving, noise-reducing and ings can hold up to 100 lbs. of water per square meter (in the event of leakage from above), and

Once installed, you won’t have to worry about mold, dust or moisture accumulating on your ceiling. Additionally, it repels odours and bacteria which is a really important consideration when choosing the product for your kitchen or kids’ rooms. Furthermore, our clients always achieve unimaginable decor results, because we also print images directly onto the material. Supported by lighting integrated with most of our projects, the stretch ceiling in your home becomes a masterpiece! Even though the technology is very helpful and useful in avoiding “common ceiling problems”, it is so advanced, that it can be granted the title of “The Ceiling of the Future”, without even mentioning its advantages in solving all of the uncommon ceiling problems. Drywall or pair, the paint fades, it peels and is messy during renovation because of the dust it creates. Many older homes were originally insulated with horsehair or newspaper and may also have vermiculite insulation that sometimes contains asbestos. In most cases, an investment is needed to remove the old insulation and properly insulate the walls, attic, and the roof.

INTERIOR Fixtures, Decorative trim, and Furniture

Merging the Past and the Present

Interior design for a heritage property can be very detailed, and its important to decide which characteristics contribute to the value of the home. The interior trim – such as door stiles and rails, wainscoting and any decorative motifs – can be valuable and worth preserving or restoring to its original state.

The Journey of Restoring a Heritage Home Transforming a heritage home into a real estate jewel through a renovation or restoration requires a commitment to the architectural character and willingness to meet the challenge of unexpected occurrences along the way. If you are the lucky owner of a heritage property or are considering purchasing one, here are five broad categories that you will want to investigate.

HISTORY Age, Condition, and Architectural Style First, you will want to learn as much as possible about the history of the property and building. The historical society in your area can be a good resource. A quick visit to the building department will yield information regarding old permits. Many architectural styles have played a role in our history – from Queen Anne and Victorian to Colonial Revival. It is worth documenting the details of your home and checking books at your local library (or on the Internet) to determine its exact style. By learning the age of your home, of its former occupants and its architectural style, you will be able to piece together the historical puzzle. As far as the home condition goes, it’s worth investing in the services of a home inspector knowledgeable in the area of historic architecture. He or she will be able to create a report that will identify potential problems

and suggest viable, cost effective solutions.

INFRASTRUCTURE Structure/Foundation, Electrical, Plumbing, and Heating and Cooling Problems with infrastructure can range from knob and tube wiring to clay pipes in plumbing. Foundations can be problematic as well, as old concrete can settle and crack causing the building to shift; a round marble placed on the floor may well give you a heads-up.

The landscaping of your historic property can’t be overlooked. Many of our forebears have brought their gardening skills with them from England, Italy, or France, where gardens were outdoor living spaces. While it may be difficult to determine from an initial observation what the garden may have once looked like, old photos can provide valuable clues.

Most old homes didn’t have drainage that kept groundwater and rainwater away from their basements, so excavation around the exterior perimeter of the house may be necessary for installing a well-rounded waterproofing and drainage system prior to finishing the interior. Buried oil tanks can be a significant issue in northern climates, and if found on the property, should be removed.

ENVELOPE Roof, Insulation, Walls, Windows and Doors Before changing any of the elements that make up the envelope of the building, ensure that replacements or repairs will maintain the architectural character. The types of siding, roofing material, and door and window styles are the key components of the historical character. The most visible elements of your heritage home should be matched as closely as possible when repairing or replacing.

This January, the Metro Toronto Convention Center hosted one of North America’s major International events - the Interior Design Show (IDS13). “The IKEA booth showed that even a so-called ‘larger’ company can indeed display a level of care and craft to the interior environment.” says judge, Donald Chong. “The design of the booth was memorable for the fact that it had the intent of creating a space both monumental and domestic in scale - something that registered well for a design show, but also that registered well with a more discerning public interested in spaces that have good value, performance and, still, a good feel.” “Scandinavian design is at the forefront right now and it only makes sense for IKEA to own this expression.” Says Madeleine LöwenborgFrick, Public Relations Manager, IKEA Canada. “Our design showcased the rustic, industrial side of Scandinavian design reminiscent of the converted warehouse spaces in Copenhagen that are so trendy right now; rather than focusing on a predictable midcentury modern expression.”

A TRENDY DOOR – IS IT POSSIBLE? Interior doors are a very important decor element. A correctly chosen door that matches the general style of the house can become a dramatic manifestation of the design idea. No element is unimportant in the matter of creating a correct decorative atmosphere, be it the colour, texture, the door style, or – especially – the finish. Interior doors should conform to the general tone of the space. Light tones look great in spacious rooms with few decorative elements. White doors are ideal for classic interiors but they can be successfully used in bolder decorative

styles as well. White interior doors help to create the feeling of ease and freedom. They enhance the space visually thus becoming ideal for smaller rooms. White doors are perfect for design compositions with a well-defined focus. This is the case when the designer needs to draw attention to the main decor element turning it into the principle accent of the room. In this situation, white interior doors will not distract from this detail but rather will create a background for it. White is also the most customary colour for bathroom and kitchen doors. Colours of natural premium woods used for furniture and door finishing look great in classic interior styles. Golden oak and mahogany, beech and walnut all have rich and deep colouring and interesting patterns. Interior doors finished in these woods add to exquisite decor. Depending on the designer’s vision, interior doors made of hardwood can come in either classic or modern style. Their rich colour palette allows for a wide choice of hues from which it is easy to select the one that would perfectly match the colour scheme of the decor. Experienced designers insist that the best way to reach your decorative harmony is to choose a door material that matches the colour of the furniture in the room. Nevertheless, sometimes contrasting colours may lead to a unique and striking result. Interior doors in dark rich tones serve as a welcome addition to luxurious baroque interiors. This requires special attention to matching elements to one another both colour wise and style wise. The contemporary approach to interior design allows most unusual combinations of styles and tones, encourages creativity and offers a wide choice of interior doors to select the ones to your liking.

Problems with maintaining a normal home existence for pets that some people experience often result from the lack of correct organization of their space. It is especially complicated when the pet is very young – this is when you find runs on your sheers and loose threads sticking out of your upholstery or risk to step on the tail or the paw of the new inhabitant of your dwelling. These are just a few of the problems of the lives of urban apartment pets and their owners. The problem is avoidable. You can set up your little friend with care and comfort and save the integrity of your decor with the help of a pet house. The majority of apartment pets are either cats or small and medium size dogs. Pet shops and department stores carry all kinds of objects that improve the life of a pet who stays inside the apartment; among them are pet houses, play places, and nurseries for mommies and their newborns. Larger dogs need a separate room but if this is impossible, they will do with a sleeping cushion in the general style of the home decor so that it becomes a design element. Pets of smaller sizes – or rather their design-conscious owners - are luckier because the variety of items offered as their dwelling or playground is much wider and allows the owner to choose the one that matches the style of the rest of the apartment and becomes a decorative object.

SMALL changes can make a BIG difference! This couple had a nice starting point - a beautiful table. They thought it would be enough to “make” the room. However, the room still felt empty and non-effective... We transformed it by adding a darker wall colour for more depth, a wicked accent wallpaper feature, a beautiful mirror, chrome accents, lighting, an earth-tone buffet and rug, and silk drapes - and voilà ... this dining room is now a stunning eclectic mix of organic elements and modern accents within a neutral classy and chic environment.
