Employing over 80 members of staff, with a large percentage of them being with the company for many years. Support of United Aftermarket Network “The organisation’s membership of the United Aftermarket Network (UAN) since 2008 as a major factor behind the business success. Our UAN membership has connected us with new and innovative suppliers and allowed us to improve our product availability as a result,” said Jack. “We have always worked very closely with our suppliers but with the help of the UAN, we have advanced these even further.” In addition, Partic Motor Spares regularly receive both digital and print marketing materials from the UAN, which showcases new-to-range products and promotions. This essential insight into the latest and greatest that the commercial vehicle sector has to offer helps the team to offer the best advice and components to their customers. “The increasing number of products

and suppliers available through CV LOGIX has been very advantageous for us in terms of stock availability, in an ever-changing aftermarket industry,” said Jack. “It has allowed us to develop and structure the way we purchase certain products, whilst maintaining a competitive service and price, which we can then pass onto our customers.” Jack and the team benefit from regular contact with the team at UAN and CV LOGIX. “We work closely with Rod Edwards and Phil Dodd from the Alliance Automotive Group. We have quarterly meetings which are structured and very worthwhile. Regular contact is key for us and that is never a problem, as the UAN are easy to get a hold of. Our queries are always sorted out quickly and efficiently.” Acquisition of Advanced Trucks Earlier this year Partic acquired Advance Truck Components increasing their branch outlets to 10 locations including Scunthorpe, Hull and Immingham. Jack Beard commented “Advance Truck were a family owned business with the same morals/ ethics as Partic and strategically & biologically suited our needs and aspirations. Like Partic, Advance have some very knowledgeable, dedicated and long serving staff who have been part of getting Advance to where it has got to today. With the added access to more and more products and brands through our supplier routes”.

Trade Evening Partic held a trade evening on Thursday 26 September for over 400 Partic customers and their families. Delegates enjoyed a hog roast and drinks throughout the evening. Supported by 50+ key suppliers including; Knorr Bremse, Wabco, Automint, J4 UK, Winnards, Fleetguard, Febi, Brigade, Guardian, Haldex, Bosch, Sachs and Top Truck to name a few. In addition, a dedicated garage equipment and tooling area to demonstrate to customers the wide range on offer from Partic. Special offers and a selection of demo’s were available to customers on the night along with a raffle held with 50+ prizes - First prize an iPad sponsored by UAN. A race car simulator competition featured and was by Ben Hamilton. Ben won a Samsung smart watch with a time of 97.74 Congrats to Ben. Partic sponsor two race truck teams ‘Smith Trucksport’ and ‘Taylors Trucksport’ both Ryan Smith and Mark Taylor were in attendance along with the race trucks for the evening.

Jack added: “The evening was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. It was a chance to showcase the products and services available through the Partic and Advance Truck Components network. We also wanted to thank all our loyal customers and was a great opportunity for them to enjoy the evening, meet staff and suppliers alike.” CV Member of the year 2019 For the third successive year Partic Motor Spares has received the groups most prestigious award ‘CV Member of the year’ it’s impressive to receive the award two years running but three years is a tremendous achievement. We asked Jack what this meant to the business and the team at Partic: “It’s a very competitive Commercial Vehicle market today and there has been a lot of change over the past year within the industry. It’s a huge honour and the first time that this has been achieved three years in succession. We work very closely with the UAN and thanks Phil, Rod and Maureen for their help. A big thank you to all our staff for their hard work, dedication and continued loyalty. R B TRUCKS LTD NAMED TOP TRUCK WORKSHOP OF THE YEAR 2019 Norfolk based TOP TRUCK workshop R B Trucks are leading the way with the latest technical advanced equipment and training for technicians. Company Director, Ray Brammer, started his commercial vehicle repair business in 1987 as ‘Ray Brammer Vehicle repairs’. In the early days Ray worked alone repairing vehicles from the back of his van, in addition Ray spent several years working from customers yards until the early 90’s when his business had out grown him and Ray bought his own workshop in Stow Bridge, near Downham Market instantly employing two technicians to cope with the demand. In 2007 the business saw further changes with the business rebranding as R B Truck Ltd. Ray, still heavily involved in the company today, less so on a technical basis and more driving the business forward with daughter in-law Simone and Scott Gilham becoming directors of the company in more recent years. R B Trucks Ltd has grown immensely over the years, now employing 16 staff including a strong, experienced team of 13 technicians. For the business to accommodate the amount of work that is turned over the business implemented a shift system

covering 7am until midnight - five days per week. This also benefited customers allowing them to reduce down-time for vehicles on the road. R B Trucks Ltd service vehicles for many long-established local hauliers, as well as assisting local authorities such as the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk and Prison Services with their vehicles. Key services offered by the business include; HGV servicing, repairs, MoTs, road-side assistance and recoveries. With the recent addition of an ATF and Tacho bay. R B Trucks strive to go one step further than their competitors to achieve customer satisfaction. Stocking a large range of parts and diagnostics for all vehicles allows the business to put vehicles back on the road with bare minimum down-time. Staff at R B Trucks are trained and experienced in different vehicle manufacturers, and different aspects of HGV repair, including electricians and fabricators enabling a faster diagnosis for customers. Experienced Technicians With experienced technicians the team can carry out inspections, servicing, maintenance and repairs on all makes of HGV, PSV and

light commercial. Also offering air conditioning system servicing, brake testing and tail lift/LOLER certification. Roadside Assistance & Recovery With four recovery vehicles and three fully equipped service vans experienced technicians are on call 24 hours a day. Even out of hours R B Trucks aim to be with the customers vehicle within 90 minutes. All service vans are equipped with welders and carry a good range of spare parts. In addition, service vans also offer roadside or on-site repair service for tail lift faults. When it’s simply not possible to get a vehicle back on the road R B Trucks will recover vehicles by taking them to the workshop or returning them to the customers yard. Covering Norfolk and regularly attending breakdowns in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Investing for the future R B Trucks is continually investing in the future with staff training and new equipment. Opening their new ATF lane in 2017, equipped to carry out all tests from Class 4 and Class 5 to Class 7, which includes cars, mini-buses, campers, light goods vehicles, American RVs, HGV’s, trailers

(including double-decks) and PSVs. The lane is also equipped to carry out brake tests, headlight checks and emission testing. The plan being, that customers will get all the services they need under one roof. In the last 12 months R B Trucks have increased their offering to include Tacho facilities allowing them to carry out tacho calibrations and repairs. Heavy Goods Vehicle Hire Always striving to go the extra mile, R B Trucks have a fleet of vehicles available to hire to ensure customers business isn’t affected should vehicles be off the road or simply workload demands have increased, and additional vehicles are needed. MODERN HCV BATTERIES FOR MODERN HCV’S eavy Goods Vehicles Are Changing Heavy Goods Vehicles are increasingly power hungry 0- in the last 10 years, the number of electrical consumers and energy demands placed on commercial vehicles are on the up. The cabin of many new trucks is used as an office away from home or a hotel on wheels - sometimes up to seven nights per week! In addition, the number of devices being plugged in whilst the vehicle is parked up, is far more than ever before, often a smart phone, tablet, laptop or other screen is plugged in overnight. A recent study found the habits of many younger drivers doing long haul trips are changing; they are more likely to spend time in the cabin streaming TV shows and films as opposed to recreational activities. This places an increasingly high energy drain on batteries. Parking Coolers (air conditioning units that function when the vehicle is parked for long periods of time) are also more commonplace on new trucks, making the energy requirements higher than ever. In the past there was not much more than the ignition, the lighting, and a heater. These days, batteries have to supply a large number of electrical components even when the truck is not moving. As a result of developments in vehicle technology, demands have greatly increased in all commercial vehicles - from trucks and buses to construction vehicles. Along with batteries being end of frame mounted and high vibration challenges, modern day HCV batteries are having to change to

accommodate HCV’s electrical demands, stringent environmental guidelines and emission restrictions. VARTA Range is Changing Too To answer these innovative changes in the commercial vehicle segment, VARTA is making changes to its ProMotive HCV range. Rather than a good, better, best approach, the range is now application driven, with certain technology types recommended for specific types of vehicle. The recently launched VARTA ProMotive AGM truck battery (the first original Truck Absorbent Glass Mat battery) which has been developed in collaboration with the leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, is the flagship battery in terms of coping with electrical demands. If a truck is being used as a hotel function for 5 nights a week or more, or it has a parking cooler, then the AGM technology is the right battery to fit. If a truck is used occasionally for overnight stays and has lots of electrical requirements but does not have a parking cooler, the ProMotive EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) would be the correct technology to fit. Traditional flooded batteries come in the Heavy Duty and Super HeavyDuty ranges. The Heavy-Duty range (in black casing) is recommended as a starter battery for agricultural and construction applications, and the Super Heavy Duty range (in silver casing) is recommended for delivery vehicles and trucks that are not used for overnights (such as removal vehicles).

Getting the Most Out Of Your Battery To get the best performance out of a vehicle’s battery, VARTA recommend routine preventative maintenance. To avoid premature failure, visual and voltage checks can determine if any recharging is required. Best practice maintenance: • Check battery voltage at least every 4 weeks • Recharge immediately if <12.5V • Keep record of battery maintenance history to ensure maintenance intervals are not missed • Check battery voltage after extraordinary events that might have caused a long-standing time • Always charge or replace batteries as a pair, ideally from the same production batch - this helps balance the charge • Clean battery terminals - if damaged, replace the pair of batteries • Always fit the correct technology - Use the VARTA Truck Portal to correctly identify the right battery

Total Cost of Ownership calculator The TCO calculator will help to understand the TCO saving potential of choosing the right battery technology. It shows the advantages of picking that technology by showing the cost benefits of owning a VARTA ProMotive battery. Using the same vehicle example as above, the TCO calculator asks for mileage information, if your fleet experiences regular breakdowns due to battery failure and any other likely costs for the vehicle breaking down. Based on this, it shows results of installing the correct VARTA battery verses downtime caused by vehicle not running, so a fleet manager can easily see the benefit of installing the right battery first time.

ENSURE COST-EFFECTIVE EURO VI COMPLIANCE WITH EMINOX DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTERS he need to improve air quality and safeguard public health by reducing vehicle emissions is driving greater regulation across the UK. A growing number of cities are introducing low emission zones (LEZs), ultra-low emission zones (ULEZs, as in London), and clean air zones (CAZs). All of these mandate that vehicles comply with Euro VI emissions regulations - or face daily charges to enter the zones. A fully functioning diesel particulate filter (DPF) is essential to meeting Euro VI standards. DPFs ensure compliance by trapping carcinogenic particles so they don’t enter the atmosphere and reduce air quality. However, DPFs can block if not serviced correctly, which will cause internal damage and add to time and cost off-road. A non-functioning DPF means a vehicle isn’t Euro VI compliant, which puts the operator in breach of LEZ, ULEZ and CAZ regulations.

As with all safety-critical parts, fitting a non-type-approved replacement DPF or removing a DPF is illegal. Previously, this meant motor factors and their customers could only replace DPFs with expensive type-approved OEM parts - but they now have a cost-effective alternative from Eminox Aftermarket. IS YOUR FLEET READY FOR DIRECT VISION STANDARD? ith only a couple of months to go before Direct Vision Standard comes into effect in Central London, Emily Hardy, a road safety expert at Brigade Electronics UK and one of the consultants on the new regulations, discusses how fleet managers can ensure they are fully prepared for the new legislation As October approaches, fleet managers will be turning their attention to the implementation of the first stage of Direct Vision Standard (DVS), when permits become available from the beginning of the month. DVS, which was passed by Transport for London earlier this year after a consultation process with road safety charities, companies and manufacturers, will apply to HGVs weighing more than 12 tonnes GVW that enter or operate in Greater London. It is hoped that through implementation of this safety initiative, deaths and serious injuries from road collisions will be eliminated from London’s streets by 2041. Fleet operators might be wondering what this means for them, and what they need to do to ensure their vehicles comply with the new standard. Vehicle manufacturers will issue a star rating in accordance with the DVS System - a series of approved technical protocols, which will be applied to HGVs to make an objective assessment of visibility from the driver’s position. Initially, it will be the fleet operator’s responsibility to apply for the necessary permit by confirming their vehicles’ star ratings with the vehicle manufacturers. Fleet operators will need to contact vehicle manufacturers to confirm these ratings. If a vehicle is rated one or above, it will automatically be eligible for a permit. However,

operators of vehicles that automatically qualify for a permit will still be encouraged to review and enhance their vehicles’ safety features. In the event a vehicle has a zero-star visibility rating, or has no rating, it will need to meet the requirements of the Safe System - a series of vehicle safety measures designed to improve visibility and reduce the risk of collisions with vulnerable road users. To help simplify the process for fleet operators, Brigade Electronics has produced an easy-tofollow infographic outlining

the main points of DVS and the equipment fleet operators will need to fit to zero-rated vehicles to ensure they meet the Safe System standards. For vehicles rated at one star or above, it is recommended that fleet operators review vehicle safety systems and fit supplementary safety features as soon as possible. Fleet operators should be aware that one- and two-star vehicles will need to comply with the Safe System standards by October 2024, when permits for these, and zero-rated vehicles, will expire. Permits for star ratings of three and above will be valid for 10 years. All permits will be provided free of charge. It is possible that an inexperienced engineer or professional fitting the ECU could assume it is OK to send out without programming the ECU as it arrived already programmed and no warning light illuminated after installation. Haldex would like to inform you that the correct reference for all aftermarket purposes is identifiable as Haldex part number(s) 950 823 008 or 950 823 034. These units are manufactured and supplied in such a way as to ensure that if no programming is carried out, the EBS warning lamp will appear illuminated. A genuine aftermarket unit also contains a warning label printed on the side of the valve which warns that the unit needs to be programmed. Any OE 823 XXX XXX valves fitted to a trailer outside of production will not have any warranty honoured. There are some simple visual checks you can carry out to check that you are being supplied with a genuine aftermarket unit: •W  hite box delivery. Sachs an original equipment (OE) brand of ZF - engineers its heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) clutches and truck clutch parts to provide the performance, endurance and reliability necessary to meet these demands. This is not just the case when the vehicle rolls off the production line but throughout its life, with Sachs replacement parts for the aftermarket exactly matching the design and quality of the original equipment fitted at the factory. At the design stage, Sachs HCV clutches are tailored to the requirements of individual vehicle manufacturers to deliver

optimum transmission of engine power to the road, allowing the performance of the vehicle to be fully utilised. All Sachs clutches and clutch parts for commercial vehicles are manufactured using premium materials to ensure durability, even to the extent that provision is made for future remanufacturing of the product. Component kits improve workshop throughput For aftermarket workshops, Sachs offers individual HCV clutch components ranging from driven plates and concentric slave cylinders to release bearings. To simplify sourcing and save time, the most commonly replaced parts can be supplied in kit form. For example, the clutch release fork, which transmits the release force from the clutch booster to the release bearing, is naturally vulnerable to wear as

it is permanently under load. The Sachs clutch release fork is therefore available in a practical assembly kit that includes all necessary components for installation, such as shafts, seals and screws. Similarly, clutch kits comprise clutch cover, driven plate, release bearing, fasteners and grease, bringing together all of the replacement parts needed for a clutch overhaul.

Environmentally-friendly clutch facings prolong clutch life Sachs commercial vehicle clutches meet the latest environmental standards. Friction materials used for clutch facings are free from asbestos and lead, produced without the use of solvents, and comply with the European Unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation. A special facing that is particularly strong and thermally stable is used for Sachs clutch discs of 362mm, 395mm, 400mm and 430mm diameter. This innovative clutch facing protects the friction surface of the flywheel and significantly decreases wear and tear, reducing repair downtime. Remanufactured clutches perform like new With the increasing scarcity and thus cost of raw materials, remanufacturing clutches brings a measure of stability to spare parts prices. A significant contribution to protecting the environment is also achieved by reusing components, with energy consumption and CO2 emissions reduced by up to 90 per cent compared to new clutch manufacture. Sachs is a leading remanufacturer of commercial vehicle clutches. To guarantee original equipment quality, only Sachs core enters the remanufacturing process, as core from other product brands may not comply with the required quality criteria. Drawing on its experience and expertise as an OE manufacturer, Sachs can not only rework the used clutch but also incorporate the latest product upgrades to deliver an item with the performance, reliability and expected life of a new clutch. For remanufactured Sachs products, the same warranty duration and terms apply as for new parts. The remanufacturing process starts with ZF factory-trained engineers stripping the worn product to component level and washing, measuring and testing the individual parts to assess their ability to complete another lifecycle. Those meeting the necessary criteria

are remanufactured to within the original tolerances and placed into stock, while any part at or approaching the wear limit is discarded. Certain parts such as friction linings, fulcrum rings and tangential springs are always replaced with new OE items as a matter of course. The unit is then rebuilt according to the most recent specifications for the particular product, undergoing the same strict processes, measurements and inspections as volume production products. This includes compliance with the latest quality and environmental standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 as well as customer specified requirements such as ISO/TS 16949. The remanufacturing process concludes with functional testing on the test bench before the released product can be reintroduced to the market. Remanufacturing versus reconditioning In such a competitive and price-conscious market place, it is worth noting the distinction between a true remanufacturing process as described above and basic reconditioning services offered by some third-party suppliers, as the terms are often confused and misused. A reconditioned clutch may only have the worn friction material removed from the driven plate before new friction linings - not necessarily of OE quality - are riveted in place. A coat of paint may then be applied to the steel parts before the product is boxed and supplied to the retail market. A Sachs OE remanufactured clutch is clearly in a class of its own compared to a reconditioned product. Surcharge-free programme for Sachs HCV clutches across Europe Since June 2018, no surcharge has been applied to the sale of Sachs HCV clutches. A single consolidated range of HCV clutches is now offered to all European markets, which simplifies ordering, stock control and core handling for customers. The programme is designed to align more closely with market requirements, increasing product availability and improving cashflow for distributors, who no longer have funds tied up in surcharge fees. NRF GUARANTEES HIGH QUALITY DUE TO EXTENSIVE VALIDATION AND TEST PROCEDURES. THE FUNCTION A FAN CLUTCH The fan clutch is an essential part of the cooling system, turning the engine fan on and off when needed. The attached fan helps to keep engines within the set operating temperature. The end result is lower fuel consumption, faster response at upper and lower temperature

thresholds, lower engine noise level and improved A/C efficiency. ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED FAN CLUTCHES Electronically controlled viscous clutches are more and more used for truck applications. This kind of fan clutch is operated by controlled silicon oil between the rotors. The amount of oil flow through the intake port is controlled by a solenoid valve, operated by Pulse Width Modulated signal (PWM). Additionally, this type of clutch controlling itself rotation by Hall effect sensor. The fan is controlled by various information: • Engine coolant temperature • Engine oil temperature • A/C refrigerant pressure • Ambient air temperature • Vehicle speed • Signal from Hall sensor (fan rotation) Because the fan clutch is such an advanced part, it needs to be correctly validated before sales. For this reason NRF expanded their test facility with a fan clutch test bench. It’s exactly the same as truck producers are using.

NEW TEST EQUIPMENT - FAN CLUTCH TEST BENCH NRF invested in a specialized fan clutch test bench. The fan clutch test bench is used to validate new-to-range parts to ensure matching quality and performance. Furthermore, the equipment will be used to invest fan clutches in case of warranty returns. NRF can do quick function tests, but also long performance tests, simulating truck driving at different road conditions. NRF is testing the fan clutches at three different criteria: • Temperature • Engine RPM • Fan RPM These criteria are tested in different stages: • Startup phase • Regulation phase • Decoupling phase • Coupling phase UNIQUE TEST REPORT PER FAN CLUTCH Each test results in a detailed test report. On this test report a unique test chart is included. Furthermore, NRF shows if each phase has been successfully completed. All this is summarized in a total functionality check.
