A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Tonight we celebrate the winners of the 2016 American Advertising Federation of Toledo’s ADDY Awards. The theme “All Rise” was created by HART to describe the candor and boldness with which we approach our industry and our work, and the pride we take in its completion. Toledo is home to some of the country’s best advertising, marketing and public relations and we believe it is important to honor those achievements. Once again, we’ve returned to the beautiful, historic Valentine Theatre. The Valentine is a Toledo institution, given the history surrounding it and its prominent place in the city. It’s a beautiful building, built with passion and creativity, and deserves to be on display. Just like the passionate and creative marketing we displayed tonight. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2016 ADDY Awards! This was their night to shine after putting their creative efforts up against 172 entries. The desire to achieve and to win are what makes Toledo so great, and your continuing support of this event is evidence of that. As President of AAF Toledo this year, I am delighted to showcase the very best of what you do. I hope you enjoyed the show tonight. I would like to thank everyone who is a part of it – the AAF team, the talented people who submitted their work and, of course, our generous sponsors. To become part of the ADDY Awards, or to become more involved with AAF Toledo, go to www.aaftoledo.org or call 419-866-4199. Patrick Bruen 2015-2016 AAF Toledo President

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

ABOUT THE AWARD The American Advertising Awards (ADDYs) is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting over 40,000 entries every year in local AAF Club competitions. The mission of the American Advertising Awards competition is to recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising. Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the local club phase is the first of a three-tier, national competition. Concurrently, all across the country, local entrants vie to win ADDY Awards – recognition as the very best in their markets. At the second tier, local ADDY winners compete against winners from other local clubs in one of 15 district competitions. District ADDY winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national stage of the American Advertising Awards. Entry in your local club competition is the first step toward winning a national ADDY. Entering the American Advertising Awards supports the entire advertising industry, because the AAF and its local and district affiliates use the proceeds to enhance advertising through programs such as public service, internships, advocacy groups, advertising education and consumer awareness. Selection of the most creative entry in a category is affected by a scoring process in which a panel of judges evaluates all creative dimensions of every entry. A gold ADDY is recognition of the highest level of creative excellence and is judged to be superior to all other entries.

ABOUT THE AWARD

Silver Medal Award The American Advertising Federation’s Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Annually, AAF member clubs bestow this honor upon outstanding members of the local advertising community. For many local clubs, awarding the AAF Silver Medal is the highlight of their year. It enhances the image of advertising by recognizing a locally well-known person for his/her advertising and community involvement. Candidates are nominated by AAF Toledo members and the recipient is selected by a panel of judges (three previous winners).

SILVER MEDAL AWARD

Jim Rohman Jim Rohman has been serving the Toledo advertising community with award-winning photography for 40 years. His career path to photography was not typical. A TU graduate with a degree in business administration, Jim never had any training in photography or art. He bought his first camera when he was 21, and learned his trade by studying great photos in Photographis Annual, analyzing lighting, composition and concepts. Jim’s first studio was in his parent’s basement, where creative directors, designers and ad agency owners passed through the living room, saying “Hi” to his parents along the way downstairs. From this small start and his big desire to do great photography, Jim has crafted a lasting career built on award-winning photography, trust and creative collaboration that has touched nearly every large corporation, ad agency and design firm in the Toledo area over the past four decades. Jim’s work regularly wins awards locally and nationally for annual reports, brochures, ads, books and posters. He has been published in Communication Arts magazine, Photographis Annual, the New York Art Directors Annual and the Mead Annual Report Annual. And his “Faces of the Museum” exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art – featuring more than 450 larger-than-life portraits hung floor to ceiling – received national recognition. Involved with many charitable projects, Jim donates his time and talents to the Cherry Street Mission, Epilepsy Center, Make-A-Wish, Arthritis Foundation, The Toledo Ballet and Christian radio. Jim has been blessed with some great assistants over the decades. One of the best, Giles Cooper, has been with him for 20 years, and a big thank you goes to Giles for all his hard work and sacrifices during that time. Throughout his career, Jim has been able to work with the best art directors and designers in Toledo, and he extends his sincere thanks to all for their trust in him and the opportunities to collaborate on their many projects.

REVIEWING JUDGES JACIE SCHULTZ

ART DIRECTOR, WYSE ADVERTISING

Jacie has come a long way since winning a Litterbug coloring contest in the second grade at Thomas Jefferson Elementary. After graduating from Columbus College of Art and Design, she has spent more than a decade at Wyse crafting breakthrough design for leading brands like Marathon Petroleum, Hungry Jack, Moen and Smucker’s. And she’s still racking up awards, including Local and District ADDYs. Directing photo shoots from a helicopter. Snorkeling the Alaskan coast. She shows no fear. Just don’t bring up her somewhat irrational phobia of being caught doing something stupid by a surveillance camera and having it go viral.

BRENT PLESMID

CREATIVE DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT, COOL POP DESIGN, INC.

As Director of Interface Design at Fathom Interactive Solutions, Brent was responsible for the design of award-winning applications across various types of media including web, CD/ROM and touch screen-based delivery methods. After nearly 20 years of extensive experience in interface design and usability, Brent recently created Cool Pop Design. This new venture allows him to explore newer and more exciting varieties of media and delivery methods. Now wearing many hats, he is focused on creating creative marketing strategies that are carried across web, social media, blog and email campaigns. Using these platforms cohesively allows businesses not only to reach a broader customer base, but create a consistent message which can be targeted to various audiences.

TIM WINTERS

CREATIVE DIRECTOR, MRM McCann Detroit

Tim Winters is a self-taught Creative Director from MRM McCann in Detroit. Having been in the industry for over 20 years, Tim has worked on brands like Ford, GM and Coke in a variety of capacities including print, broadcast and digital.
