Congratulations to the 2018 AAF Toledo ADDY Award winners! We are honored to recognize and showcase Northwest Ohio’s best creative talent in a wide variety of advertising, marketing and public relations categories at the historic Valentine Theatre. The AAF Toledo ADDY Awards are the first phase of a three-tier, national competition. Tonight’s Gold winning entries will compete in one of fifteen district competitions and district ADDY winners will move on to the third tier, the national stage of the American Advertising Awards. A special thank you to Hanson for delivering the theme for this year’s AAF Toledo ADDY Awards. Their bold design uses the symbolism of control and chaos to draw a parallel between process, craft, and dedication required of creatives and the nontangible feeling of creativity as it unfolds. The colors are inspired by a clean, crisp aesthetic for method, and an explosive, vibrant marbling for madness. Nearly 200 professional and student entries were received from agencies, businesses, and individuals in the Toledo area market. A four-member judging panel of advertising experts selected the award winners that will be featured tonight. The most prestigious award of the evening, the Silver Medal Award, recognizes the outstanding contributions of one nominee who has been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Congratulations to all of tonight’s winners and best of luck to those that will go on to represent AAF Toledo in the district competition. Indeed, it does matter where you make it.

At the tender age of 4, the future Judy McFarland hopped on her tricycle and pedaled off to join the circus. Today, though her vehicle has changed, her firm conviction that new adventures await around every corner has not. From breaking barriers as a corporate female photographer in the early 80s, to leading the original ProMedica brand team, to building the first hybrid agency in the region, Judy thrives on new challenges. As the President and CEO of Thread Inc., the hybrid agency that includes Thread Marketing Group, FLS Group, eMerge Document Management, VIS Alliance, and Altcoin Science, Judy brings the insights of a diverse career to a team she showers with support and encouragement. “I believe that by taking good care of our people—by recognizing each member of our team as a human being with families, hardships and joys—by coming alongside them to support and encourage in very practical ways, we can better serve our clients,” she says. “Aside from being the right way to treat people, it’s best for everyone involved.” Clients, including Henry Ford Health System, St. Luke’s Hospital, The Toledo Clinic, and Lourdes University agree. Judy’s way of leading has resulted in not just great work, but in work that gets measurable results. She has built a career with a reputation for being involved and engaged in the pursuit of the absolute best solution to any marketing communications challenge, whether that includes branding, digital advertising, public relations, or something else entirely. Equally important to Judy is a vibrant and healthy community. She leads the charge in working with social service agencies and in serving on boards (past and current) like the Advertising Club of Toledo, Junior Achievement of Northwest Ohio, Humane Ohio and the Toledo Area Humane Society. In addition, she has served as ambassador for Lourdes Luminations and The Valentine Theatre. At

Thread, she and her team support Good Grief of Northwest Ohio, Connecting Kids to Meals, CASA and Goodwill Industries. With her trademark humor and curiosity, Judy continues to rewrite the definition of leadership just by being uniquely herself: generous, sincere, and with tricycle at the ready.

RUSS GRYCZA The AAF Toledo Board of Governors and membership are honored to present the 2018 Honorary ADDY for Community Partnership to Russ Grycza, Instructor at Penta Career Center. Since 2011, Russ has directed the American Advertising Awards show in Toledo. Each year he guides several of his students through the production of the show. From creating the presentation, to running the control booth, Russ and his team of gifted Penta students never fail to make sure the show is memorable, on time, and flawless. His commitment to these rising stars, the community, and AAF Toledo are to be commended. As an educator, we thank him for preparing hundreds of passionate, knowledgeable students to join our industry. As a professional, we thank him for being a master of his craft. As a friend, we thank him for being a valued partner of AAF Toledo. Please join us in congratulating Russ with this recognition. Bravo!

Kacha Azéma E XECUTIVE CR E ATIVE D IR ECTO R , S KID M O R E STU D I O

As Skidmore Studio’s executive creative director, Kacha keeps everyone on track – both internally and externally. With oversight throughout research, ideation, and iteration, he maintains the strategic vision for Skidmore’s clients. While strategy can be purely functional, Kacha makes it personal. His greatest strength is in his ability to truly empathize with the customer and quickly identify that “one thing” that can create an emotional connection. By challenging convention with his bold and unapologetic style, he has helped bring the strategic vision to life for non-profits and big name brands alike, including Dave & Buster’s, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Expedia, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Universal Orlando, American Express, Visa, Ford, Chrysler, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. His work includes everything from brands and messaging, to apps and environmental graphics, to national product launches and experiential displays.

Roger Frank MANAG IN G PARTN E R /CR E ATIVE D IR ECTO R , LIT TLE JACKE T

A writer by trade, Roger’s passion is translating strategic insight into compelling creative. For nearly three decades, his creative leadership and attention to craft has helped define the voices of brands big and small. Currently, he is managing partner/creative director at Little Jacket, a design firm with offices in Cleveland, Ohio and Brooklyn, New York. He’s won some awards and collected a few honors over the years including One Show Pencils, national, regional and local ADDYs. His work has been featured in Communication Arts, Adweek, Archive, Creativity, How, and Print magazines. All of which is lovely, but not as important as being a good person.

JUDGE’S CHOICE SALES & MARKETING

“I selected the Libbey Artistry Collection catalog for my Judge’s Choice. There were a number of things that really captured my attention with this piece. I was initially drawn in by the cover design and the paper selection. I loved the variation in the layout, the great photography, the typography, and the great use of the white of the paper to showcase each product. Just as a watercolor artist would use the white of the paper to make a painting really shine. The textures, little hand‑drawn sketches and hand‑written notes added that extra little bit to carry it over the top. I found it to be a simple, effective, and beautiful piece, and that’s what good design/advertising is all about. Congratulations, Libbey!”

“LifeFormation’s work is pretty attention grabbing on its own – it’s fun, whimsical and unexpected. Their website, however, is incredibly simple, and I think the choice to maintain that simplicity is what makes it successful. Messaging, image treatment, color, type… it all compliments and highlights this client’s ability to create without overshadowing or convoluting it. It’s straightforward, yet delightful, and I’d imagine that’s exactly the brand experience that LifeFormations was looking to convey.”

JUDGE’S CHOICE FILM, VIDEO & SOUND

“Shock and awe. As in, shockingly awful—but in the most memorable, charmingly delightful, WTF kind of way. That’s how I describe what I surprisingly found to be my Judge’s Choice. I chose the Toledo Ticket Co Gumby’s Adventure video not because it was exemplary, high-quality work, but because it absolutely captivated me—better than anything else in the show! And isn’t that exactly what good work is supposed to do? Our clients come to us with some version of, ‘Help me communicate my brand.’ And we race off to create the same old amazing, award-winning work that checks the all typical boxes for sound strategy, innovative design, clever messaging, etc, etc, etc…yawn. At the end of the day, have we truly captivated anyone? Have we stopped them in their tracks, shown them something they can’t tear themselves away from, and given them something unforgettable to talk about? Thank you, creators of the Gumby’s Adventure video, for reminding us that it’s the simple, honest and truly unique things of this world that confound the ‘wise.’”

“We selected the Purdue - A Great Adventure video as the Best of Show. We found this piece to be intriguing, well thought out, and beautifully executed. The sound design really rounded out the video. As a child of the 80s, I really connected with the “Goonie-esque” outdoor exploration and imagination. The child actor casting was superb. It was fun, effective, and had quality postproduction. Congrats on your big win!”

Andy Kittles S E N I O R ART D IR ECTO R , TH E O H LMAN N G RO U P

“It wasn’t rocket science to give Purdue’s “A Great Adventure” the Best of Show award because it so clearly demonstrated care and quality in the craft of all the disciplines—writing, directing, editing, etc. But the thing that made it truly stand out was the sound design. This video’s soundscape was lush, reminiscent and emotional. The video punched way above its weight because the sound created a touching moment that the viewer couldn’t ignore. My hat’s off to the sound designers for doing things through my ears that could never be communicated through my eyes!”

“This is a big idea. To execute something so big so well deserves recognition. It left me feeling inspired not just about the possibilities of education, but also about the possibilities within our industry, and about what creatives can accomplish when they are as engaged and committed to a concept as this team must have been. Great job!”
