about I am Aadi Nandan Sagar, a third year architecture student at California Polytechnic Sate University in San Luis Obispo, California. I was born and brought up in Bangalore, India, where I still live for some part of the year. I have a strong passion for culture and languages, that feeds my desire to travel and explore. Along with this, I love anything to do with soccer, sneakers, and all things design.

the algae house Group Project: Redesigning an existing building into a house for our client and his extended family Cambria, California

Our client shared his profound love for algae with us, forcing us to dig deeper and really research about the topic. After understanding his basic needs and the family’s lifestyle we looked for inspiration in diatoms, a form of plankton. They control the amount of light which enters their cell through a membrane made of glass pulled from water in the form of silica. Looking at this, we decided to incorporate a focus on light and creating spaces that were ambiently lit up to create specific feelings. In order to this, we designed the house to surround a large swimming pool that reflects light into the spaces around it. In the bedroom, lighting is very minimal and only from a clerestory placed above. This aims to push users out into public spaces and interact more with the family. Similarly, the dining space is lit from 3 sides, creating the effect of a halo around the dining table. From our understanding of the family, we gathered that eating meals together was an essential part of their livelihood and so a focus on creating an endearing, warm and really inspiring dining space was important.

noaa research center

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Research Center: Avila Bay, California This project was challenging in the way that in entailed the creation of the form first and then adaptation of the form to fit the site and program. We were given guidelines for the creation of a wooden model with bays that were spaced equally and placed on a cast rockite base. We had a lot of freedom in terms of deciding the design process we wanted to follow. I decided to implement a method of using a word and an associated image to come up with a form and then chose one to model physically:

Chumash and Salinan people. Chumash remains continue to be found in the area. The name Avila commemorates Miguel Ávila, who was granted Rancho San Miguelito in 1842. The town was established in the latter half of the 19th century, when it served as the main shipping port for San Luis Obispo. In the late 1990s, Unocal began the cleanup of decades old oil seepage discovered years earlier from corroding pipes under the township, and which had caused a massive oil spill under the town.Over 6,750 truckloads of contaminated

marine algae

replaced with clean Guadalupe Dunes sand. Many of the town’s homes and businesses, including several blocks of Front Street, were razed as a result of the quarter-mile-wide excavation. New buildings, homes, businesses, modern walkways and sea motif walls and benches have been constructed Although Avila Beach still has a working commercial

AVILA BEACH CLIFF LANDING SITE Avila Beach faces south and the 600 foot elevation of Point San Luis breaks the prevailing northwesterly winds. It is therefore usually warmer than the other beaches on the Central Coast. Most of Avila Beach is undeveloped, except for a few blocks adjacent to the beach with homes, hotels, and small businesses, and a few upscale housing developments inland near a golf

course. Diablo Canyon Power Plant is located is about 6 miles northwest of the beach itself. Avila Beach is also known for its hot springs. U.S. Route 101 and State Highway 1 bypass this part of the coastline to the east in favor of a more direct route from Pismo Beach north to San Luis Obispo. Average temperatures vary little during the year. Average

annual rainfall is 15 inches. Along with much of the California coast, winter is the wet season with more than 70% of the yearly rain falling from December through March. topography lines delineate a 10’ elevation change

windmills of your mind - bench Internship at Total Environment Building Systems, Bangalore, India As an intern at Total Environment, I was first given the job of drafting drawings to learn their design vocabulary. Later, I had to design a bench that would respond well to the Indian context and fit into one of their projects. My design solution addressed the pre-existing problem of older people not having places to sit within the project. So, I made sure to have a comfortable backrest and arm rests, with the bench as a whole not being too low.
