The AAA Approved Auto Repair Program

AAA INTRODUCES NEW NO COST IDENTITY THEFT PROGRAM
October is Fall Car Care Month and AAA has identified a network of approved repair facilities that include new car dealerships and independent garages. These shops all meet AAA’s strict quality standards and display the AAA logo. When you see the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign, you’ll find highly trained technicians, a wide range of professional repair services and guaranteed workmanship. And while hundreds of repair facilities apply for the AAR rating each year, only about one-third are able to meet AAA’s rigid criteria. AAA ensures the repair facility has the right tools and equipment to provide a wide range of repairs. They must also adopt staff training qualifications and insurance guidelines. Finally, AAA surveys customers about their satisfaction with the facility. The AAR program protects members against repair failure, because all repairs, parts, labor, and components are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles under normal operating conditions. In addition, AAR shops have agreed to allow AAA to investigate repair service transactions that have been disputed by members and to abide by AAA’s resolution. See page 8 for a list of AAR garages in your area.

By Edward Scala President, Beaver/Lawrence Region dentity theft is a crime that victimizes people of all ages and from all walks of life. It not only robs you of your money, but of your privacy and your personal information. One of America’s fastest-growing crimes, identity theft has ranked number one on the Federal Trade Commission’s list of complaints for 13 years in a row. According to a study by Javelin Strategy & Research, in 2012 identity fraud incidents increased by more than one million victims. The study pinpointed 12.6 million identity theft victims in the U.S., or one every 3 seconds. In all, criminals stole more than $21 billion. Identity thieves are relentless in their pursuit of your most private information but now, AAA East Central members have a new tool to protect themselves. It’s a new, no cost benefit that enhances AAA’s mission of providing safety, security and peace of mind. Available exclusively for AAA members ProtectMyID® helps you go beyond what you could ever do on your own for effective identity theft protection. New AAA Top Destinations Guides
t’s now easier than ever for AAA members to plan memorable travel experiences and activities, thanks to AAA’s new Top Destinations digital travel guides. Available via a recent update to the iPad version of the free AAA Mobile App, the guides give travelers a fast, fun way to plan their visits to popular destinations. “These informative, interactive guides provide valuable time- and vacation-saving insight from AAA’s travel experts,” said Jim Lehman, president, AAA East Central. “They pinpoint the very best things to see and do at member-preferred destinations and enable users to make the most of their visits to these locations.” The guides also make the most of AAA’s mapping expertise, allowing users to switch back and forth from pages to map views. Avoiding common and costly life insurance mistakes Changes in relationships can impact the status of your beneficiary
ife insurance is one of the best sources of financial security for loved ones left behind after a death. One of the most important details of any life insurance policy is naming the beneficiary/beneficiaries for the policy. The beneficiary is the person(s) you wish to receive the proceeds from the policy upon your death. Believe it or not, there are some people that purchase their life insurance policy and neglect to select a beneficiary or never revisit the policy as life changes. You can save your loved ones a lot of time, money, and trouble by carefully selecting a beneficiary for your life insurance policy and making sure that information is kept applicable to your present situation. Most people don’t like to have conversations about anything involving death, but a possibly awkward conversation now can save your beneficiary the frustration and time of hunting down the information during what will already be a very difficult time for them. Here are three things you can do to avoid some of the most common and costly beneficiary mistakes:
Revisit the policy
Life is constantly in motion. Sometimes this motion doesn’t affect the relationships a person has, but more often than not it does. If relationship changes have an impact on
a hard decision, conflict, or the need to revisit the policy can result in confusion and legal challenges that can tie up the money or cause the omission of someone you wanted included. You want to be specific when naming a beneficiary. So, use the given name and not generic terms like child, parent, wife, or sibling.
Some people name themselves or their estate as the beneficiary. This means that the life insurance benefit will go directly to their estate. However, naming yourself or your estate can leave the benefit subject to taxation and enable creditors to seize it for unpaid bills. Remember, if you have any questions, concerns, or doubts about your beneficiary designation, then you can always consult your tax advisor or attorney.
STICK WITH THE PLAN — People often forget to revisit their insurance policies as life changes. the beneficiary you’ve selected, then the life insurance must be updated accordingly. And, we aren’t just talking about obvious deaths, divorces, births, or marriages. For example, if your children were underage when you first obtained your life insurance policy, then you might have established a guardian or trust. Once the children reach adulthood, it might make better
sense to name them directly as beneficiaries. Another example would be if a beneficiary is now elderly or no longer mentally competent. In such cases, it might make better sense to name an alternative beneficiary and make the appropriate provisions in your will to care for the previous beneficiary.
Being vague in an attempt to avoid

HISTORY & TIMELESS BEAUTY WHEREVER YOU LOOK...
13 days, 21 meals, 4 “moments,” 1 amazing rate!
Italian Vistas Ciao, Italia! There’s time to practice your “Hello, Italy!” before embarking on this 13-day vacation that has everything you’d ever want in a trip to this enchanting land — and then some, namely an exclusive AAA experience called “Dine with the Tenors” and exclusive AAA member savings of up to $650.00 per room. (But, be warned: There’s much less time to lock in these great savings!) Once you’re in Italy, you’ll find yourself saying ciao to a variety of memorable vistas — urban and rural, ancient and modern, simple and sophisticated, sacred and secular... and all uniquely Italian in flavor, style and attitude. After seeing everything there is to see on this amazingly comprehensive escorted tour, you’ll understand exactly why it’s called “Italian Vistas.” With time-limited member-only savings of up to $650.00 per room (see call-out below), you’ll see lots more for lots less! We’ve taken a very popular tried-&-true itinerary and “amped it up” to include 4 extraspecial travel “moments” that you’d have to research and add on at your own expense and effort. Among them are guided visits to St Peter’s Basilica and Vatican City’s museums, which house not only one of the world’s greatest art collections but also the incomparable Sistine Chapel. Follow a local expert on an in-depth 3-hour tour (admissions & headphones included!). AAA Exclusive: Indulge in a hearty traditional 4-course dinner complete with wine at a very popular restaurant in Rome. As you enjoy the delicious tastes of Italy, you’ll be serenaded with favorite arias from the best-loved operas. It’s a lively, funfilled

evening and an engaging immersion into Italian culture. After dinner (gratuities included!), embark on an enchanting “Rome by Night” tour. The Eternal City’s famous landmarks (Colosseum, Forum, Emannuel Monument and others) illuminated against the night sky are an unforgettable sight! But, to assist your memory, you’ll receive a souvenir opera CD (1 per couple & 1 per single). Near stunning Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast, seek out a charming little town blessed by mountain breezes and sea air to visit a dried-pasta factory. Learn about the art of pasta making and then savor a dinner featuring this delicous culinary treasure in the factory’s very own restaurant. Buon appetito! Yet another unforgettable “moment” awaits in a tiny town atop one of the picturesque hills surrounding Florence. Enjoy an after-hours visit to a 14th-century monastery before sitting down to a family-style feast of traditional Tuscan dishes and local wines (live entertainment & service gratuities included!). Last but not least among the 4 travel “moments” is a serenaded gondola cruise in Venice! Partake in one of the world’s most famous travel experiences — la serinìssima. Board this elegant watercraft and sip a flute of Prosecco, enjoying the melodic voice of your gondolier as he navigates along the Venetian canals. “Italian Vistas” features relaxing multiple-night stays in Rome (3), Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast (2), Florence (2), Venice (2) and Stresa in the Lakes District (2). After a welcome dinner in Rome the first night, discover the city‘s Classical and Christian treasures on a locally guided tour. Enjoy an in-depth visit of the Colosseum. manager will be available to offer suggestions. Journey south to the brilliant Bay of Naples. Soak in 2,000 years of history during your exploration of the excavated ruins of Pompeii. In the resort town of Sorrento, see a demonstration of wood inlaying by local artisans. A very scenic boat ride takes you to the enchanting, stylish and dramatic isle of Capri. Take a panoramic ride to its highest town, then enjoy Capri town's chic boutiques, lush vegetation and outdoor cafes before returning to the mainland for your dinner experience at a pasta-making facility. Traverse Tuscany’s picturesque vineyards and olive groves on the way to Florence, “Cradle of the Italian Renaissance,” to see Michelangelo’s magnificent “David” at the Academy Gallery. Enjoy a Diner’s Choice night — an included dinner of your choice from a “menu” of great restaurants. Visit a family-owned leather shop to learn traditional techniques in leather making and a gold shop for an informative explanation of Florentine gold. Tour the city’s architectural landmarks, including the Piazza del Duomo. In the ancient maritime Republic of Pisa you might choose, as most visitors do, to stage a photo of yourself holding up the famous Leaning Tower! Sure, it’s corny and cliché, but it’s almost irresistible...and fun! A special stop is made at a Tuscan winery & farm for a lunch of local specialties and wines. Then cross the Appenine Mountains to Venice. Cruise to Murano Island for a glass-blowing demonstration before returning to St Mark’s Square for a tour of the Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Bridge of Sighs. In Verona, stroll the streets that served as the backdrop for Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. At Stresa, in the breathtaking Lakes District, admire the gorgeous views of Lago Maggiore. Cross over the border into Switzerland
to the picturesque lakeside resort of Locarno for its views, shopping and cafes. Cruise to Isola dei Pescatori, one of the scenic Borromean Islands, for a farewell dinner surrounded by beautiful scenery. This magnificent adventure features visits to 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Pisa, Venice and Verona! Because this is such a popular package, we’re offering 2 departures:

Let Cancun be your place in the sun An oasis of flawless beaches and fabulous attractions
ancun could best be described as a beach with an island in the middle. Centuries ago, Mayan emperors traveled here to get some R&R. Today, this cosmopolitan resort perched on the limestone shelf of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is among the premier vacation spots on the planet. Luxury hotels line the Hotel Zone, a seahorse-shaped oasis connected by two causeways and flanked by the tranquil Nichupte Lagoon and the restless Caribbean Sea. People watchers can take a stroll on the Malecón Américas a palm-fringed promenade hugging the shoreline. Cancun’s twelve miles of beach are celebrated for their turquoise waters and powdery white sand. All are open to the public and anyone with the inclination can walk from one end to the other. You can either hike along the northern shore by the calm waters of Bahia de Mujeres, or follow the Caribbean Sea on the eastern shore. The sand here is like talcum powder and surprisingly cool, thanks to a limestone composition that doesn’t hold the heat. Playa Ballenas is the magnificent white beach that established Cancun’s reputation as a resort, while Playa Las Perlas is a favorite with boogie boarders because of the great wave action and

Playa Linda is the main departure point to Isla Mujeres and for the submarine and dive excursions. Cancun’s waters are legendary for their clarity with schools of dazzling blue neons hovering among the rocks and piers. The otherworldly Underwater Museum, which opened in 2010, features more 400 life-size figures by English artist Jason deCaires Taylor, displayed in less than 10 feet of water.
Shoppers can bargain for authentic Mexican handicrafts, silver, Mayainspired art and designer clothing. The majority of open-air markets are located in El Centro, the downtown area, while the mercados on Tulum Avenue are a great place to practice your bargaining skills. Party animals will want to take full advantage of Cancun’s legendary nightlife at clubs like Dady Rock, Señor Frog’s and Coco Bongo, a multilevel mad-
house full of mammoth video screens, brilliantly costumed dancers, Cirque du Soleil-style acrobats, celebrity impersonators, conga lines, confetti canons and balloons. Cancun is close to several Mayan archeological sites including Tulum, located about 80-miles south of the city. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of all Mayan sites, Tulum is the only Mayan city built next to the sea, which provides a spectacular backdrop for its well-preserved ruins. Chichen-Itza, located about 2-hours from Cancun, was the political and economic center of the Mayan civilization. The expansive ruins cover about six square miles, and are dominated by the 75-foot-tall Kulkulkan pyramid, which functions as a giant solar calendar. During the equinox, the sunlight sends an image of a serpent undulating down the temple walls. IF YOU GO

Whether it’s the hottest headliner, or a trendy nightclub, there’s always something going on in the Entertainment Capital of the World. Set in 1987, it’s the story of a young couple chasing their dreams of stardom on the Sunset Strip. Patrons can hold up battery-operated “lighters” and sing along with arena rock favorites like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and “Don’t Stop Believin.” Country Music’s first couple — Tim McGraw and Faith Hill — have extended their limited engagement Soul2Soul tour at the intimate 1,815seat Venetian Theatre. Newly revamped cruise ship lets the Sunshine in Carnival Destiny changes everything — including the name
ruise lines need to continually update their fleets to ensure existing ships match the stateof-the-art standards of their newer siblings. Sometimes these changes amount to little more than new carpet and drapes, or a refresh around the pool area. In the case of Carnival Destiny they decided to change everything, including the name. Launched in 1995, the world’s first 100,000-plus-ton cruise ship was a forerunner of a new class of grand-scale vessels. Now Destiny has a whole new destiny so to speak. The 3,006-passenger ship recently underwent a $155 million makeover morphing Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine during a 49-day dry dock in Italy. The refit includes a radically reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck, the expansion of two other decks and 182 new cabins. Sunshine emerged in May with all of the elements of Carnival’s ground breaking Fun Ship 2.0 program, and several exciting new features all her own. Top-deck amenities include Serenity, a spectacular three-level adults-only retreat — the largest in the Carnival fleet — featuring a pool, waterfall, and magnificent sea views. WaterWorks is an all-new water park where you can zip down five different slides and have a splash-tastic time with 40 different interactive water fea-

Speedway Splash lets you slip slide away in dual, side-by-side 235-foot-long slides with racers’ times displayed on a scoreboard and special lighting effects that add to the adventure. The enclosed 334-foot-long Twister — Carnival’s longest slide — features a crystal clear turn that extends out over the edge of the ship. Diners will discover a tantalizing array of culinary choices. Ji Ji Asian Kitchen serves a diverse menu of deli-
cacies from the Far East, while Food Network star Guy Fieri grills his amazing hand-crafted burgers and fresh-cut fries at Guy’s Burger Joint. Fahrenheit 555 is a classic American steakhouse with all the ambiance of a pre-war supper club. The Havana Bar pays homage to Cuba’s storied nightlife with palm trees, elegant archways, and vibrant tile work, along with floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic ocean vistas. By day, a casual gathering spot, at night, it transforms into a Cuban-inspired club with a cool Latin vibe.
Alchemy Bar is a vintage-themed cocktail “pharmacy.” Professional mixologists will “prescribe” concoctions from different elixirs and ingredients, or guests’ can create their own custom cocktails. Carnival Sunshine’s Limelight Lounge is home to the Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez. A lineup of established and up-and-coming comic talent is showcased in partnership with the popular TV personality who serves as Carnival’s “curator of comedy” In November, Carnival Sunshine will reposition from the Mediterranean to New Orleans, for a winter schedule of seven-day Caribbean cruises from the Big Easy through April 2014. Carnival Sunshine will then shift to Port Canaveral, Florida, for year-round five- to eight-day Caribbean departures beginning in April 2014.
Carnival’s Seaside Theatre features a poolside 270-square-foot high-tech LED screen offering nightly “Dive In Movies” along with a variety of concerts, and sporting events in the fresh sea air. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Travel insurance travels with you
hether your idea of a vacation is sipping a cocktail by the pool, or skiing a double black diamond, travel insurance can provide valuable assistance and financial protection. There are three types of insurance you should consider if you are planning an international trip: Trip Cancellation Insurance — This covers your financial investment should you have to cancel a trip due to sickness, a death in the family, bad weather, delayed luggage or another disaster listed in the policy. In addition, if you or an immediate family member become seriously ill or are injured during the trip some travel insurance policies will reimburse you for the unused portion of the vacation. There may be exclusions for pre-existing conditions, so check your policy carefully. Depending on the policy, trip cancellation insurance might not cover any medical care overseas, so you may need a separate travel health insurance policy. Travel Health Insurance — If you need medical treatment overseas, you will probably be asked to pay out-of-pocket, which could be very expensive. Before you go, consider your insurance options in case you need care while
you’re abroad, especially if you have existing health conditions, or will be away from home for a long time. If you have health insurance, find out if it will cover emergencies that happen abroad. Ask if your policy has any exclusions, such as for preexisting conditions or adventure activities. If your health insurance coverage is not adequate, consider buying a short-term supplemental policy. Look for a policy that will make payments to hospitals directly. Medical Evacuation Insurance — If the health care at your destination is not up to U.S. standards, consider buying medical evacuation insurance. This can be purchased separately or as part of your travel health insurance policy. This insurance will pay for emergency transportation from a remote or poor area to a high-quality hospital. Make sure that the policy provides a 24-hour physician support center. Having the right insurance will help you prepare for the unexpected. If foreign travel is in your plans speak with your AAA travel or insurance representative about travel insurance coverage that you can take with you wherever you go. Call 800.354.8761 or visit AAA. com/travelinsurance to purchase travel medical insurance online.

Springfield now open at Universal Orlando Resort! Hometown of the Simpsons comes magically to life
sending the coaster into “Happy Little Elves in Panda Land” and “Captain Dinosaur’s Pirate Rip-Off.” Despite the spectacular freefalls and mid-air collisions, and Homer’s reassurance that “theme parks wouldn’t kill you as long as there’s a dime left in your pocket,” the motion simulator ride vehicles never actually move more than a few inches. There’s also a gift shop modeled after the Kwik-E-Mart. Springfield’s topography has included coastlines, deserts, farmland, and tall mountains. The state in which it is located has never been made clear and the name “Springfield” was chosen because it is so common, appearing in more than thirty states.
oo Hoo! Springfield is now open at Universal Orlando Resort. The hometown of America’s favorite animated family is anchored by the mega-attraction, The Simpsons Ride, and a brand new attraction — Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl. For the first time ever, anywhere, fans will be able to live and breathe the places that helped Springfield stake its claim as “Shelbyville by the Sea.” On Fast Food Boulevard diners can chow down on a Krusty Burger, go nuts for donuts at Lard Lad, or belly up to the bar at Moe’s Tavern. And yes — there’s Duff Beer, brewed exclusively for Universal Orlando. Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl takes “foolish humans” on an intergalactic spin designed to send them into orbit. Or browse the latest edition of Radioactive Man in Comic Book Guy’s Android’s Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop. Meet Krusty the Clown and Sideshow Bob — Universal’s two newest walkaround Simpsons characters. You may even run into Chief Wiggum, if he doesn’t run into you first. “This is a must-see experience for Simpsons fans,” said Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Creative. “For the first time ever, they’re going to be able to enter a world that they’ve only seen on television — and we’re really excited to bring that world to life.”

KEEP TWIRLING — Foolish earthlings will be totally unprepared for the effects of time travel on Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl. The longest running scripted show in television history, The Simpsons exploded into a cultural phenomenon in 1990 and has remained one of the most groundbreaking and innovative entertainment franchises. Created by Matt Groening, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie have won 27 Emmy awards are currently in their 25th season. The Simpsons Ride, which opened at Universal Orlando in 2008, was
designed to duplicate the Simpsons home-viewing experience, only at high speed and with lots of screaming. Patrons are introduced to a low budget theme park called Krustyland and the “Thrilltacular: Upsy-Downsy SpinsAroundsy Teen-Operated Thrillride,” the most extreme ride at the park. Sideshow Bob, however, has escaped from prison and vowing revenge on Krusty and the Simpson family, smashes the track,

intersections and downhill stop signs. Acceleration can be affected, too. Even when dry, leaves present a challenge — obscuring potholes, curbs and road markings. This is also the time of year when the sun sits much lower in the horizon and glare from the sunlight can temporarily blind you or drivers around you. Keep your windshield clean and streak free to minimize dazzle and use your sun visor to block reflected light. Cooler weather causes rubber to harden reducing traction, affecting your tire’s cornering and braking ability. Black ice may linger on roads in shaded areas or particularly on bridges. As warm weather fades, road hazards such as wet leaves, frost, and glare from sunlight during morning and evening rush hours can make driving more hazardous. AAA and PennDOT offer the following fall driving tips: • Increase your following distance in severe weather, at dusk and dawn and when in an area with wet leaves. • Check your vehicle’s headlights, taillights and turn signals to ensure they are working properly. • Have your vehicle’s heating and wiper systems checked to ensure they are working properly. Under Pennsylvania law, when your wipers are on, your headlights must also be on. • Be sure your tires have sufficient tread depth in case of an early season snow.
