I believe I speak for most of us when I say the recent accident in Texas has left us with a lot of unanswered questions. Shortly after the accident, the AAAA Board began receiving requests from the media for information and interviews. With Paul Smith's assistance, we created a statement for our Board members to use in response to any requests. As a Board, we agreed it was improper for us to make any statements until the NTSB and FAA have completed their investigation into the accident. I'm interested in seeing their findings and am confident our AAAA Education committee will look for insights gained from the investigation to help educate our membership to make us better and safer pilots and crew. I have received several official calls from the FAA with questions regarding balloons and ballooning. I have been invited to participate in a meeting next Friday with the Director of Flight Standards in Washington, D. C. As President of the largest balloon club, I feel an obligation to represent you, our membership, as the FAA works to understand the nature of balloons and our sport. I will update our membership at the August General Meeting and my September column. Elisa Trillianes

Clarification on New Procedures for Student Pilot Certificates By now many balloonists know that the FAA is no longer issuing the paper student pilot certificates that a Designated Pilot Examiner or FAA personnel could issue on-the-spot. An application must be filled out and then verified by one of those same people before it can go to the FAA in Oklahoma City. There is no paper temporary pilot certificate, but a plastic student pilot certificate will then be issued in a month or so. It looks just like a private or commercial certificate. It is a common misconception that a commercial balloon pilot can do the verification since flight instructors have now been added to those who can verify the information and send a student application to the FAA. This is not the case, however, since a commercial balloon pilot is not a Certified Flight Instructor. Since that is a separate rating not available to balloonists, the same people as before are the only ones who can send in student pilot applications; DPEs or FAA inspectors. Since there are 2 DPEs in Albuquerque, either Ray Bair or I can help those wishing to get a student pilot certificate. The other option is for applicants to make an appointment and go to the FAA FSDO office near the Albuquerque International Airport. Elizabeth Wright-Smith
