July Flying Event will be held at Balloon Fiesta Park July 10, 2016 – 5:30am registration - 6am briefing I have been asked to look around for a possible alternative launch location to the Rio Rancho field we launch from. I would very much appreciate any suggestions or insight that can be provided. Please email those to flying-events@hotairballooning.org.

Crew D – Crew Development is putting on the annual Crew D Tailgate Cook Off on July 10th at Fiesta Field. Registrations will be accepted after pilots brief. Complete rules and guidelines for cookoff will be available there. If you would like a copy of the rules and regulation before the morning of July 10th, you can contact Larry Kaibetoney at crew-dev@hotairballooning.org or call him at 505453-6606. Crew Development is also planning to provide a free mini crew safety session after the August flying event. There is no need to register prior to the session. The mini crew safety session will be a short 15 minute class on fan safety. Balloon crew who do attend the mini session will be awarded points for participation. Class will be informal so come on over with your drink and learn something new or something you already know! Do not forget to sign in to get your Crew Development points. Crew PreFiesta Safety Seminar will be conducted on September 11th on Fiesta Field. We will meet at the safety building. More information will be available on the AAAA website soon. The Crew Development section on the AAAA website will be undergoing changes from July 5 to July 9. Old information will be removed and new information will be added and updated on a regular basis.

Happy flying and safe landings.

They will block off a "no traffic" area for the balloon based on the pilot's suggestions. The pilot will be compensated for time and propane. I have one new request for this month. Contact: Pam Russom, Goodwill 5000 San Mateo Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109 505-881-6401 x1879 voice 505-314-1919 fax Requesting tether rides at Goodwill on 3401 NMHWY 528, (Alameda at the old Golden Corral in Saver's parking lot) on Saturday, August 13th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Other news. Ideas have been brought up by the AAAA Board and will be implemented in the near future. 1. We are going to have a form that a person/group requesting a ride, tether etc. will be available to fill out online. Instead of having the money go directly to the commercial pilot - we are asking that the money be donated to AAAA - in return a propane voucher will be issued to the pilot. That being said, both commercial and private pilots can be involved in this process of giving rides/tethers etc. and will receive a propane voucher.

2. It was also brought up at the board meeting that we should have a photo caption contest in the monthly Cloud Bouncer.

Education The second Private Pilot Ground School was held June 3-5, 2016 with 24 students. 2 students canceled at the last minute. We discussed a cancellation policy. After much discussion it was decided that there will be no refunds after the Late Fee Date, with the understanding this is on a case by case basis if necessary. We are researching both a new laptop and a PA system for classroom presentations. We feel these are necessary in order to continue to provide quality presentations, grouond schools and programs and to save Beth’s voice (she is under Dr’s advisement to stop raising her voice). [the preceding about Beth is not for public dissemination.] We have started planning for the AAAA / AIBF Safety Seminar. It will be held in the Sid Cutter Pilot Pavilion on Tuesday October 4. The city will not be providing black out curtains so we need to see what we can do to darken the room for the projector. Several possible presenters were discussed. We are open to suggestions on what subjects and presenters folks would like us to include

A moment of silence followed in honor of Blaine Sant, an active member of AAAA since 1983, who passed away in May. At this time the meeting was turned over to Blair to introduce the evening’s speaker, Nathan Gordon, Albuquerque’s new FAA FSDO representative. Nathan gave a short introduction about himself and reiterated the role of the FSDO in the community of Aviation Safety. Nathan then introduced John DeWitt of the FAA who described his position as that of Safety Outreach. With this in mind, he reminded us that a qualified Safety Seminar will count toward the ground portion of an upcoming Flight Review. John then concluded with various web sites relating to safety, updated regulations, and Flight Standards required for the various systems.

Clarification on New Procedures for Student Pilot Certificates By now many balloonists know that the FAA is no longer issuing the paper student pilot certificates that a Designated Pilot Examiner or FAA personnel could issue on-the-spot. An application must be filled out and then verified by one of those same people before it can go to the FAA in Oklahoma City. There is no paper temporary pilot certificate, but a plastic student pilot certificate will then be issued in a month or so. It looks just like a private or commercial certificate. It is a common misconception that a commercial balloon pilot can do the verification since flight instructors have now been added to those who can verify the information and send a student application to the FAA. This is not the case, however, since a commercial balloon pilot is not a Certified Flight Instructor. Since that is a separate rating not available to balloonists, the same people as before are the only ones who can send in student pilot applications; DPEs or FAA inspectors. Since there are 2 DPEs in Albuquerque, either Ray Bair or I can help those wishing to get a student pilot certificate. The other option is for applicants to make an appointment and go to the FAA FSDO office near the Albuquerque International Airport. Elizabeth Wright-Smith
