First awarded in 1975, is presented annually by AAAA to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of hot air ballooning. The award honors an individual whose extraordinary dedication has benefited the hot air ballooning community as a whole, not just AAAA, yet whose actions and efforts are not otherwise widely or publicly recognized. This year’s honoree began ballooning as a scorer at the 1975 world championships. He must have really enjoyed ballooning because he returned the following year for the 1976 world championships. Soon after
he got his pilot’s license and his first balloon, not necessarily in that order. In 1977, he joined the Board of Directors for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta as treasurer where he sat until 1983 when he became President of the Board. In 1985 he decided to take some time away from the Board of Directors, but returned in 2001, where he was promptly voted as treasurer again and has remained since. In addition to Balloon Fiesta, this person has also served AAAA. Not long ago, in a time of need, the club reached out to him for assistance as treasurer. He graciously agreed to step into the position and then ran for the seat at election time where he was elected by the general membership and continues to serve that role today. As if that’s not enough, this individual volunteers at the local Air Force Base assisting military personnel with their taxes and has volunteered countless more hours to multiple organizations around the city of Albuquerque, far too many to list. He is the unsung hero of financial longevity of Albuquerque ballooning organizations, assisting in more ways than just the books. So please join me in recognizing and thanking this year’s recipient of the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association Sid Cutter Award, the treasurer with a sense of humor, Dick Rice.
