AAAA General Meeting Minutes July 24, 2012 Meeting called to order at 6:30 by Mike Garcia

Guests: Tonya Hale of Albuquerque and Pam from Alamogordo.

questionable weather. On days that the weather is questionable the companies send representatives to the council. If the council decides the weather is too bad all flights are cancelled. Communication can also be an issue between pilots and passengers as the pilots may speak one language and the passengers usually speak another so the language barrier could be really detrimental in communicating during a flight if issues arise during the flight. If you would like more information on flying in Cappadocia please contact Troy Bradley.

Ballooning in the Community: Eichhorn flew Air force Academy cadets on July 21, 2012 Guest Speaker: Troy Bradley: Cappadocia Turkey

Secretary report

Troy showed a slide show of pictures of flying in Cappadocia Turkey. Cappadocia is by far has the largest number of balloon rides in the world. The weather conditions in Cappadocia area is similar to Albuquerque; there are about 300 flying days a year about 50 of those days are questionable as it is here. Troy described the landscape in the area as similar to Gallup’s landscape. There is a lot of growth in the ride companies in Cappadocia. There is so much growth that they are in need of pilots. The Turkish CAA has the same laws or similar laws as the FAA. However, the ride companies have had issues with tour guides not understanding the risk of questionable weather and the safety issue that arise in bad weather. The companies have created a council among all the flight companies in Cappadocia to monitor

BFA – The southwest BFA director recently resigned. The newly appointed southwest director is Blair Kaufman. It is nice to have to more BFA reps in Albuquerque. Several things are coming up; elections and new bylaws or changes to bylaws are coming up as well as new or changes to by laws. New program recognizes master balloonist who have been in the field for 40 years. Currently the Nationals are underway in Longview Texas. FAA – I have a challenge for all of you, please bring guest to the meeting. The museum gets to use us as part of their count for attendance and more attendance gets the museum more funding. John Dewitt was introduced to the club; he works at the FAA here in Albuquerque and has helped in with the revisions to the flying events waiver. Fiesta - 73 days eleven hours! Surveys just went out to registered pilots with basic questions. We are trying to accommodate pilots as best we can; we are working on an overnight trailer parking area at the Balloon Fiesta Park. This creates logistical problems; however we are having a meeting tomorrow to discuss more details to come. Pilot tent will be open in the evening for seven nights. Don is working with the Cooperage for meals and drinks that are reasonably priced at the tent.

Do you have a balloon basket in good shape that you won’t be using during Balloon Fiesta? If so, would you consider letting a Balloon Fiesta Sponsor use it? Although some AAAA members have express concerns about the conditions at the Rio Rancho field, others have expressed that they would not typically fly if all events were at Balloon Fiesta Park. After consideration, the Flying Events Committee is not planning to propose any changes to the alternating location format for 2013. We need scorers for upcoming events, and welcome additional committee members.

MembershipWhere or where has the summer gone? I can’t believe that the 2012 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® is about 60 days away…. WOW! Before, balloon fiesta starts, we of course have kids of all ages headed back to school. Which reminds me that AAAA’s Education Committee is putting on the Safety Seminar during this Balloon Fiesta, information is on our website. Crew Development is having a Seminar in August, covering the basics of crewing. Looks like we have plenty of learning opportunities headed our way. We had our first meeting at the new location, the Balloon Museum, we had 99 people attend. Yes, we took count! It helps the museum keep track of the attendance. Troy had a great presentation, as usual, about flying in Turkey and some of the obstacles that he has seen from the pilots and owners there in Turkey. We wish him safe flights upon his return to Turkey. I must let you know that in the last few days, with great sadness that Dr. William Bird, passed from pancreatic cancer on July 18th , 2012. He was surrounded by loved ones; we send our condolences to the family and dear friends. We have also lost another great member of our club and ballooning community, Evelyn Byrd, she had some recent medical procedures and had been recovering when she passed away on July 31st , 2012, in a local rehab facility, friends that had visited her said she still had her smile and was in good spirits. Our thoughts are with both families in this time. It is approaching the time of nominations…. No not those types of nominations, just yet! Can’t get rid of me that easy! Please nominate a person that you feel is an outstanding member of the ballooning community. Below is the detail and requirements to be considered in the nomination. The deadline is August 31st 2012, you can give them to any board member, or can email them to me at president@hotairballooning.org, if you so please you can even hand deliver to me at the general meeting. You can view the all recent recipients on the AAAA website, just in case you want to double check to see who has been honored already.

The Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association (AAAA) is now taking nominations for the Sid Cutter Award. First awarded in 1975, this Award is presented annually in Sid Cutter’s name by the AAAAA to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of hot air ballooning. The nominee should be an individual whose extraordinary dedication has benefited the hot air ballooning community as a whole and is someone whose actions and efforts are not otherwise widely or publicly recognized. Recipients of the Sid Cutter Award are automatically awarded an honorary membership in AAAA. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting… we are trying new things, and need your input about setup for our new location… if you attended July’s meeting, please let me know what you thought. Remember it takes time to work out the kinks, yet we want everyone to come and enjoy being a part of one of the largest hot air balloon clubs.

This one should have been common sense, but since it actually happened, the Homeowners Association representative has asked for chase vehicle access to be clarified: Please do not drive chase vehicles onto the grass park (Los Pablanos Orchards) in the middle of the houses to the west of the Los Pablanos Open Space. (North of Montano & east of Rio Grande) Except for a small section next to a vacant lot, the park is totally fenced and barricaded to vehicle traffic. Next to the vacant lot you still have to drive across the landscaping and sprinkler heads to get into the grass park area. If you do land in the park, which is discouraged but not completely banned, you will need to walk your equipment out. As a reminder, do not drive vehicles anyplace in Albuquerque that has grass, except sometimes Fiesta Park. There is even a city ordinance against it. Grass or anything that grows a nice green color is Too hard to grow here and shouldn’t have vehicle traffic.

July's Top Gun flying event was cancelled due to BFA National Balloon Competition taking place in Longview, Texas. Congratulations to our own Keith Takach and Mark Sullivan for participating. Thank You to the large support group that Keith had in Texas with him, Bob Mass, Mark Trillanes, Jason Buckner, Fred Peek, Bill Kennedy. Each participant of the National Competition was among some very competitive pilots with being able to come back to New Mexico with knowledgeable information. More information will be in the Top Gun Observer.

Landowner Relations Notice

Top Gun wishes safe travels to our Top Gun Members that are traveling to Michigan beginning August 17th for the BFA World Balloon Championships. Mark Trillanes, Dave Bagley and. Bill Kennedy

The August Top Gun flying event will be Sunday, August 19, 2012 meeting at AIBF offices. Registration will be at 5:45am and Pilot Briefing at 6:15am.

p?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper &Itemid=67 BALLOON EXPLORIUM YARD SALE Balloon Explorium Inc is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to lighter-than-air education for children of all ages. Explorium conducts tissue paper balloon workshops in schools in the Albuquerque area, as well as in Roswell and Alamogordo. During Fiesta, Explorium operates the hands-on area of the Balloon Museum. The largest event of the year is the celebration of Montgolfier Day. Each year, in November, Explorium partners with the Balloon Museum to build and fly tissue paper balloons with fifth grade classes from around the Albuquerque Metro area. Explorium provides all the materials for 1,200 children to build the balloons and, with assistance from the Museum Foundation, pays for the transportation from the schools to the museum to fly the balloons. In 2011, sponsors of this event included Rainbow Riders, Friends of Smokey Bear Balloon, Rocky Mountain RV and Marine and several individuals. On September 7 and 8, 2012, Explorium will be holding a yard sale to raise funds for these events. The sale will be held at the home of Deb Bains. Details will be announced in the near future. Explorium is looking for items to include in the sale. Everything will be accepted but we are looking for balloon related items, so clean out those closets, garages and t-shirt drawers. Explorium volunteers will pick up the items anytime so call when you have something to donate. You can contact Karen Brown at (505)980-1922 or Bill Taylor at (505)2596028.

Balloon Museum Membership The Balloon Museum encourages all Fiesta participants and Albuquerque balloonists to become members of the Museum. Memberships, beginning at $15, entitle you to special discounts and perks. For details and online sign-up, see http://www.balloonmuseum.com/index.ph

JDRF walk ,ov 3rd We are starting our scheduling for the 2012 Walk to Cure Diabetes. Date this year will be Saturday, November 3rd at Balloon Fiesta Park. Would you be able to volunteer or help us get the word out that we need balloonists? Thank you so much for helping us out with this each year!!!

HDARC The HDARC has been approached by NM-TF1 to conduct another Tech License class. The weekend of August 25-26? please contact Fred Lete letefred@aol.com to inquire

VISTA DEL NORTE P&R has fenced the Vista del Norte property to control access. Questions have come up about access for balloon landing/ launching and possible neighborhood access. To allow landings and launchings we are going to use a similar locking approach as during the Balloon Fiesta. P&R will install combination locks with the code set to 2012. Please let the balloon community know about this. Also, please remind them to lock the gate after using the area....

Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association AAAA Education Foundation Treasurer’s Report June 30, 2012 COMMENTS: One month down, eleven to go. It is very difficult to comment on one month. Expenses exceeded revenues in the Education Foundation as well as the Club. I have prepared Pie Charts for June but they don’t show much and what they do show is misleading since we had so few transactions in a very slow month. As you know our major sources of revenue occur later in the year, and I’m confident we will see better results as we progress into the year. CASH: Cash on hand in the Education Foundation was $43,979, $285 less than it was June 30, 2011, the end of our last fiscal year, and The AAAA Club cash was $16,698, $1,377 less than it was June 30, 2011. INCOME STATEMENT: At the end of June we were showing an excess of expenses over revenues of $348 in the Education Foundation an approximate reduction over the year ended June 30, 2011 of $1,076. Excess expenses over revenues in the AAAA club were $-544, an approximate reduction of $147 over the same period. Closing Comments: You will find in this issue of the CloudBouncer a one page summary of both the Education Foundation and the AAAA Club Statement of Receipts and Disbursements with Budget Comparison along with illustrative Pie Charts, which I hope you will take the time to review. I welcome any questions, comments, or thoughts for improvement. Dick Rice Treasurer Treasurer@hotairballooning.org
