March 2012

BOARD MEETING MINUTES Members in Attendance –Elisa Trillianes, Peter Cuneo, Diana Rutz, Mike Garcia, Mike Gonzales ,Jennifer Greenwood, , Dick Rice, John Hofer, Garry Haruska Absent: Colleen Johnson Visitors: Philip Gilson, Shelly Cannaday, Lori Wichhart, Michelle Lutz, Keith Lutz

Secretary report: Diana is frustrated with the database. Even though she has worked hard to ensure the database is up to date the extracts are still not working properly. Also the internal battery on the laptop is critically low; the issues with the loose wires to the screen still have been an issue as well. Board discussed different options for either replacing the laptop or Diana assuming the use of the Education Committee’s laptop. Keith Lutz works at Intel and suggested that he speak with Rick McAlpin who is an access specialist. Rick may be able to lead us in the right direction to fix or replace the current database. Peter will be bringing the Education Computer to

Treasurer’s report – Dick is continually working on the newly created Financial Statements. Dick is working on a report to publish in the monthly cloudbouncer. Vice President’s report – Peter is again resuming his search for meeting space for our monthly meeting. Diana has spoken to the catering department at the Tamaya Resort. Our current contract with the Elegante is up in June. After much discussion Peter will be getting bids from the top choices and present to the club members to get their input before choosing a new location

Education – Crew Development – Crew D is sending a young man or young woman to the BFA junior balloonist camp in Iowa June 17-21 2012 or Michigan July 22-26. You can find a link to on the AAAA web site. Please contract crew development if you have any questions. Aug 18 is our next mini and CPR Nov 18. Community Relations –Jennifer had no issues to report this month.

Ways and Means: the roster is coming along. Last month’s Happy Hour was a lot of fun. Next Tuesday we are having another, April 3rd, Nexus Brewery at 6pm. Ken the owner will be donating 10% of what we order back to Quad A. Last month he rounded up and gave us a check for $50 plus the use of his private room. Pints are $3 and the food is delicious. We will have a raffle. Yearly Pins are on order, and they look great. Flying Events: March’s event was cancelled due to weather. The flying events committee has decided to cancel the R2C2 competition in Rio Rancho as it was not as successful as we had hoped.

There will be no door prizes at the March meeting as we have raffles and silent auction for the ways and means committee. New Business: Shelly Cannaday has requested a donation to Top Gun for the State Competition that is coming up on Memorial weekend. A motion was presented to donate the same amount as last year to top gun. Motion was seconded and passed by board vote All Guest were asked to leave the meeting so the board could have a private executive session.

Special Events – Dick went over the financial statements for the event. Elisa reported for Colleen that more pins are on order.

Old Business: Pins and Patches for the Membership packs are still not done we will look into using a different vendor in the future. Elisa will check with the current vendor as Dick mentioned he had been sent an invoice. New Business: Elisa received another inquiry about Liability insurance for the club. Motion was presented and approved to give Elisa authority to contact both insurance agencies to get quotes.

~~*~~ ANNONAY I'm Nancy Oakes, the French teacher at Rio Rancho HS. I spoke at an AAAA meeting last summer about the Annonay student exchange. I brought up the idea of an exchange of a pilot which had been discussed among my French friends, including André Linocier who brought the EtienneJoséphe balloon to the Fiesta in 2008.

I have received word from my colleague in the high school in Annonay that the ABA pilots (Annonay Berceau de l'AĂŠrostation) would like to know if an AAAA pilot would like to come to their festival during the first weekend of June. They offer room and board most likely in one of their homes. If a pilot could get to Lyon's train station or airport, I'm expect they would arrange to have someone meet him/her there. In many ways this would parallel our student exchange -- and we have an wonderful experience every time. Our student group will leave May 25 so we will also be there. Two American teachers of French available if needed, but I know pilots speak ballooning. Little or no French should not stop someone from taking ABA up on this invitation. Please contact me as soon as possible if there is even a strong temptation. I'll be happy to help with the communications with ABA. In the spirit of exchange, I would think an ABA pilot will want to come to ABQ for Fiesta next fall. The best solution for that would be a homestay with someone in the AAAA community. I'm happy to brainstorm anyone about this project.

Double Eagle AWOS Since the Double Eagle weather isn’t available by phone once the tower opens, I called them to see if it was possible to have it available both by aircraft radio and by phone after 6 am. The tower personnel told me the system is incompatible with having them both on, but if balloonists wanted to get weather by phone, they could call the tower at 3525595 and get a real- time weather update from them on current conditions at the airport.
