results see committee report in the Cloudbouncer. The next AAAA flying event will be July 10th at the balloon fiesta field. Check in 5:30am. The next Flying Event committee meeting will be July 1 at Applebee’s on San Mateo.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Crew D – Mike Garcia. The committee will be holding a fan safety mini seminar after the July flying event. There will also be an ice cream social.

I was discussing membership and meeting attendance with another Board member this past month and was told that June is typically our lowest attended meeting of the year. I don’t know the exact numbers, but it appears to me that overall attendance for club meetings has gone down in the last few years. It begs the questions of why? What is causing this drop in attendance and overall club membership? What can your club do better to serve you the member? The only way to answer these questions is with input from you the club member. Visit the website www.hotairballooning.org and click Officers & Board on the left hand side to send a note with any suggestions or ideas you might have.

VP Report – Beth Wright-Smith. The July speaker will be the new Balloon Fiesta Event Director Don Edwards. Ways and Means – Debbie Reynolds. The 2010 membership roster is available at the back of the room. Local members need to come to a meeting to get, so come to the July meeting. They are taking orders for AAAA logo t-shirts. They will have them in black or in teal with the AAAA logo on the front. Price is $15.00. They are starting to gear up for the September raffle and silent auction. If you have anything you would like to donate for the raffle see Debbie. They are also looking for pilots who would be willing to give rides to our corporate sponsors. If you would be willing to do this please contact Debbie.

In the meantime sign up for the Fiesta Safety seminar, take your crew to the mini fan safety seminar in July or the August crew seminar, check out the new AAAA t-shirts and pins, attend the monthly flying event and try out the new R2C2 competition, volunteer to help out with one of our many community requests, attend the meetings and enjoy our wonderful lineup of guest speakers, last but not least enjoy the pilot tent at Fiesta and the amazing job your club does keeping the pilots and crew fed and ready to fly.

Community Relations – Bud Hebrlee. Bud donated a tether for Camp Enchantment and summer camp for children suffering with cancer. Ray Bair and Lori Pitman flew for the American Diabetes Bikeathon. And on June 12th, 8 pilots attempted to tether for the Prostate Cancer run. Joe Diaz sent a nice thank you e-mail for the attempt.

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by Elisa Trillanes.

Our speaker for the night was Jenny Early. She spoke to us about railroad safety. She made sure we understood why we should not be landing and deflating our balloons near railroad tracks. The railroad owns the land 50’ on either side of the tracks and we could be cited for trespassing if an officer thought there was a problem. Don’t stop on tracks; if you car stalls on tracks, get out of the car and call 911.

New Pilots – Charity Blanchard Crawford Elisa Bustamante talked about the balloon rally held down in Chihuahua, Mexico. Shawn Burns will be taking over organizing the rally and trying to smooth out the problems they had last year. If you are interested in going down for the rally please get with Elisa Bustamante.

BFA – Troy Bradley is the new BFA President since Don Edwards stepped down to take the Balloon Fiesta Event Director position. Ray Bair mentioned that Blair Kaufman is running for a BFA Board Position and asked BFA members to vote for Blair.

Committee Reports: Education – Tom Fisher. You can sign up for the Balloon Fiesta Safety Seminar on the AAAA website or there should be a registration form in next month’s Cloudbouncer. Next education meeting will be July 12.

Balloon Museum Foundation – Toni mentioned that the museum had their 70,000th visitor on June 21st, that made it a 88% increase in visits in 4 years. They will be starting a concert series on Tuesday nights in July. The first band will be the Watermelon Mountain Jug Band, cost will be $8.00/person. They

Flying Events – John Hofer. The last AAAA event had 33 pilots signed up, 11 scored on the AAAA target and 3 managed to get to the R2C2 target. For

you to J. D. Huss from the Albuquerque FAA for coordinating this flight with the Sunport tower. Saturday, June 12, 2010: Sincere thanks are in order to the following for volunteering for the “Walk for Your Man” fundraiser for Prostate cancer awareness event held at the Fiesta Balloon Park. Dr. Dan Meyers, Lori Pitman, Blair K a u f m a n , M u r r a y C o n r a d , D o n B o y e r, A l Lowenstein, Bud Hebrlee and Pat Chando. Due to winds not being so favorable, several pilots elected to candle glow, one streamered, one partially inflated and Mr. Al Lowenstein inflated.

The drawing was held and the meeting was adjourned at 7:55pm. The next general meeting is at 6:30pm on July27th. Submitted by Debbie Reynolds

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Joe Diaz sent a thank you message at 5:36pm June 12, 2010:

COMMUNITY RELATIONS Monday, May 31, 2010 : Memorial Day was a day to remember for about seventy children from seven to seventeen who were attending “Camp Enchantment,” sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Thanks to the Quad-A club for showing up for the “Walk for Your Man” event this morning. 1) You pilots were out there in force and it warms my heart that you were so enthusiastic about this important awareness event.

Bud Hebrlee, wife, and “Crew Chief” Judith and their neighborhood crew arrived around 5:30pm to join the children, staff and Doctors for a nice dinner. After dinner, everyone assembled at the soccer field for questions and answers from the pilot. All the important questions were asked and answered. Everyone lined up while Capt. Bud cold air inflated so all the children could touch the balloon fabric. Once the children returned to their seats, Capt. Bud stood up the balloon for about ten minutes as the wind started to pick up. After deflating the balloon, each child was handed a balloon card of “Aerloon.”

2) You never got “frazzled” about the wind. It is what it is.. and you just rolled with it. 3) When I asked you to move toward the camera you did. That showed some activity at the field. We were going live from 6 to 9am every 7-minutes so it showed us “what was happening” at the event at the time. 4) When one balloon was able to inflate for a time. We framed our shot to show that all the time. Never during Balloon Fiesta do you hear the Quad-A Club getting a plug on the air. But I mentioned your association several times this week on the news and several times this morning.

One young man advised he had a friend who wasn’t feeling very well and couldn’t join the other children to receive his balloon card. Capt. Bud and his new found friend, hand delivered his friends “Aerloon” balloon card. To see the joy in this young child’s eyes was well worth the effort. One of the Doctors motioned Capt. Bud within whisper distance and commented, “This means more to these children than you realize.”

Your organization is really “plugged in” to Albuquerque, with a heart to help important causes. I really hope you walk away from this experience with the thinking that it was worth it to get up and drive to the Park this morning.

Saturday, June 5, 2010: Ray Bair and Lori Pitman launched their balloons from the Embassy Suites parking lot promptly at 6:20am during the National Anthem. The occasion was for the American Diabetes Association fundraiser where over 1,000 to 1,300 bicycles from all over the country participated. Ray and Lori experienced winds aloft that were light and variable. Their flight path was towards the northwest. A special thank you to you both for your effort and our thank

Personally it warms my heart that you were so willing to participate and so patient, yet still exuberant, when the weather was not as calm as we hoped. Your organization is a class act. Thank you! Joe FLYING EVENTS Once again the Rio Rancho Balloon Field provided us with a challenging flying event. After watching

our hare balloon, Mike Garcia, struggle to launch and then go zipping across the field none of us thought that we’d see any balloons launch let alone make it to the targets.

from 9-12pm; see the registration form in this issue of the Cloudbouncer. More details to follow. We are always open to suggestions on what you would like to see from crew development. Is there an area that you would like to see covered or have an idea? Please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me.

Sunday 33 pilots registered for the Flying Event. 11 pilots scored on the AAAA target. 1st place went to Ray Bair (our July Balloon Meister) with a distance of 24ft 11in. 2nd place went to Richard Gruette (our July Weather Guy) with a distance of 27ft 7in. 3rd place went to Neil Jackson with a distance of 31ft 2in.

SHORT BLASTS Our deepest sympathy goes out to Tonya and Jeff Griego for the loss of their son Justin who passed away Thursday June 26th.

Three pilots scored on the R2C2 target. 1st place Tom Schroeder had a total score of 62 ft 7.5 in. Tom scored on the AAAA target by flying in from the south east. You got-to love that field. 2nd place Gerry Graff had a total score of 208 ft 6 in. 3rd place Steve Coffing had a total score of 363 ft 10 in.

To all members - After you receive your new membership roster, if you find a mistake in your information, please either fill out the correction form at the back of the roster or e-mail your changes to secretary@hotairballooning.org.

We collected $76.00 and LOTS of canned goods. Thank you all for the donations. I’d like to thank the following people for helping at the June event. Mike Garcia, our R2 C2 Hare, Pat Chando the Balloon Meister, Blair Kaufman our weather guy, Lisa Mulder, Tom Goettsche, Evelyn Brickner, Sam Bradshaw, Mathew Ingraham, Linda Bonney, and Bethany Hofer (my niece was visiting from Wisconsin). I would also like to thank all the pilots for launching their balloons off field even if they were not competing. It helped things run more smoothly and kept everybody's stress levels down. Our next event will be Saturday July 10th at Balloon Fiesta Park. Pilot registration starts at 5:30am. Briefing starts at 6:00am. The next Flying Events Committee meeting will be Thursday, July 1, 6:00pm, at Applebee’s, located on north San Mateo. CREW D For July’s Flying Event we will be bringing back the Ice Cream Social. We will also be having a “mini” refresher on Fan Safety; it will be about 30 minutes long at Balloon Fiesta Park after flying. Come by and check your knowledge and eat ice cream while we discuss and show different fan issues and safety concerns! Hey and you never know, there could be a raffle too!! Make sure that you are there! The crew development committee has met and has decided to put on a crew seminar for August 28th
