PRESIDENT’S CORNER By Debbie Fowler

3rd Prize: Dinner at a local Restaurant and a Single Balloon Museum Membership.

Hi Everybody,

The existing member that brings in the most new and renewals wins first prize, second most, 2nd prize, third most 3rd prize. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact myself or one of your Board Members.

The summer flying season is in full swing. Folks are traveling to rallies not only here, but all over the southwest. Thank goodness fuel prices are a bit lower than they were last year!! I don't know about you but I'm looking at trips and measuring the number of tanks it takes to get there. (that's a new part of pre flight planning)

Finally, a question. When did you last read the ByLaws for AAAA? The last time they were revised was 2006. Is there an item that might need revisited in the future? If there is something you think needs discussion, please contact myself of one of your Board Members.

But, you know it's really about taking the time to enjoy the sport we all love. May have to prioritize a bit, but by golly we're gonna get in the air at some point each month!

Fly Safe, Have Fun and Happy 4th of July! Deb Fowler

July is also time for the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association (AAAA) to open nominations for the 2009 Sid Cutter Award.

BOARD MEETING MINUTES

First awarded in 1975, this award is presented annually in Sid Cutter's name by the AAAA to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of hot air ballooning. The nominee should be an individual whose extraordinary dedication has benefitted the hot air ballooning community as a whole and is someone whose actions and efforts are not otherwise widely or publicly recognized. Recipients of the Sid Cutter Award are automatically granted an honorary membership in AAAA.

June 15, 2009

Written nominations must be submitted to the AAAA Board of Directors prior to the last day of August. Send nominations to: AAAA Board of Directors: PO Box 90160, Albuquerque, NM 87199-0169.

The Minutes from the May meeting were read, motion to accept. Passed

Here's and update on the AAAA Membership drive that has been running from June 1st 2009 through July 31st. The goal is to increase our membership by inviting folks back to the club that have been previous members, and to add new members. We will do this by not only offering the reduced rate, but waiving the initiation fee. SO, for a regular member, for the remainder of 2009 the membership fee is $12.50, and $2.50 per family member. For this time period only, the initiation fee of $10.00 is waived. YOU can save as much as $22.50.

Secretary: 2 new members and 3 renewals. Presented regular member and family member count to the board. Treasurer: Lyn passed out printed copies of current revenues and expense statements, this was read and Lyn answered all questions. Motion to accept. Passed. Paperwork to add Tonya Griego to the checking account was completed. Vice President: The agenda for June’s General meeting may be amended to allow Beth to talk about the “Up” tour (as requested by the board). Tommy Thompson’s blooper would be moved to the August meeting and the July General Meeting will feature

1st Prize: Dinner at a local Restaurant, 2 tickets to Cliffs, and a Family Balloon Museum Membership for a total value of $160.00.

would keep the info on a flash drive to be updated as needed, accepted, passed. Much discussion of increasing membership for 2010 – motion was submitted to increase Regular Membership to $30, Family Members to $10, and Junior Members will stay at no fee.

Flying Events: Lichele reported that the June flying event had a great turnout even though the weather was “interesting.” Flights were approximately 45 minutes long. 24 pilots were registered with 10 pilots scoring. 1st Place went to Jerry Garcia! YEAH! Scores will be posted in the next Cloudbouncer as well as on the website. Thirty dollars worth of can goods was collected. Please remember that the $5 charge for lost baggies is being enforced; DON’T LOSE YOUR BAGGIE. Lichele received a thank you letter from the Roadrunner Foodbank for past donations. The next Flying Event is scheduled for SATURDAY, July 11th at Balloon Fiesta Park. Pilot Registration begins at 5:30am with pilot briefing at 6:00am.

New Business: “Sam” Tzamaloukas brought up to the board the issue of allowing members/nonmembers to have their business website links posted on the AAAA website. A motion was present to create a Sub-committee of the Community Relations Committee to develop an E-commerce policy, passed, and accepted. This committee will consist of four members; Bud Hebrlee, a general member, a corporate member, and the web master. The board is looking into changing the by-laws to allow e-ballots for elections, as well as allowing voting to occur at General Meetings with the members being able to participate in the voting. The board is hoping to have a resolution on this issue soon.

In trying to increase membership, letters are going to be sent to past members as well as Safety Seminar Attendees with the reduced rate information. The next regular meeting will be held July 28th at the MCM Elegante, 7:00pm.

Vice President: July’s General Meeting will include Dr. Tom McConnell book signing.

COMMITTEE REPORTS COMMUNITY RELATIONS I’ve been assigned to search and find a reasonably priced 10’X20’ storage unit to store 30, yes, thirty years of Cloudbouncer past issues along with other artifacts we have accumulated as an organization over the years. If perchance, you have friends or family who own storage units, we’d be very interested in visiting with them and perhaps we can strike a deal in the way of rent. The options are many. Please call me (Bud) at 505-296-2440 with any information. The sooner the better. Thank you.

Community Relations: There is a new subcommittee being formed regarding the website, please see the Board minutes for additional information. Bud received a request from Tony Fleischer at the Balloon Museum for a Hispanic/Latino pilot to tether on July 12, 2009, 11am-3pm during the Celebrate Science activities. Flying Events: Lichele reported that the June event was fantastic. 1st Place goes to Jerry Garcia, 2 nd Place David Tennis, and 3rd Place Rick Portmore.

To continue, my sincere thank you to Ms. Debbie Tennis for volunteering to represent AAAA members interest in our newly formed sub-committee to develop a viable link on the AAAA web site for interested persons who would like to advertise to sell their products/wares. At the moment, we are seeking an interested person in the corporate community who will represent their interest as well.

Crew “D”: Phred reported that the August event will be a “Back to School” theme, maybe a Creative Cafeteria Casserole Crunch. Education: Don Bragg will be the Education Board Member and Tom Fisher will serve as the Liaison. August 15, 2009 there will be an instructor refresher course. The committee is working diligently on the Fiesta Safety Seminar.

This will be a joint effort to research in advance any interested person who may wish as I mentioned, to sell their products on our AAAA web site. I will keep you posted on our progress. If you are one of our corporate sponsors and you wish to volunteer for our sub-committee, by all means call me so we can proceed, post haste.

Ways and Means: The 2009-2010 Membership directories are finished and are now available, as well as the 2009 Pin. AAAA Garage Sale – September 12, 2009 – if you would like to purchase a table there will be a $35 fee or you can donate items to AAAA. If you would like to volunteer to tether during the Garage Sale at the Balloon Museum please contact Debbie Reynolds.

For those of you who attended the AAAA meeting Tuesday evening 06-23-09, I humbly requested a Hispanic balloonist volunteer for Celebra la Ciencia (Celebrate Science) event that is being held at the Balloon Museum between the hours of 11:00am and 3:00pm on Sunday July 12, 2009. This event is targeting the Hispanic/Latino community to speak about ballooning and hopefully spur interest in what it means to be a balloon pilot and Hispanic.

Special Events: Paul had his first committee meeting on June 12th. The committee has lots of great ideas that they are working on for Friends & Lovers and Balloon Fiesta. Top Gun: Cory Atchley said that there will be another Basic Competition Flying class in July – please see the website for additional information.

With some mild coaxing from Sam Tzamaloukas, Hispanic pilot, Mike Garcia volunteered to fulfill the wishes of Balloon Museum spokesperson, Toni Fleisher for this very worthwhile event. Our sincere thank you to both Mike and Sam for their efforts.

AIBF: Chuck Raskob reported that Fiesta is working hard on improving safety – for further details please see the President’s letter and/or Fiesta’s website. Balloon Museum: Jeff Cooper-Smith attended the General Meeting.

By the way, I understand Mike is a former resident of Albuquerque who moved to Colorado and has now returned. Welcome home Mike.

Museum Foundation: Jennifer Taylor reported that the foundation is also having a membership drive. AAAA members will receive a 10% discount.

One last item before I close. AAAA member and balloon pilot Mr. Tony Poteet form Wolfforth, TX has

[7]

passed his Texas Board of examiners test as a Registered Nurse. I commend him for his hard work and feel confident he will be a wonderful asset to the Lubbock, TX Hospital Laboratory. Congratulations Tony for a job well done. “We’re proud to have you as one of our members.

Semi Annual Raffle in September. We are accepting goodies for the raffle. Contact Debbie if you have something to donate.

FLYING EVENTS We had a great flying event in June! Great weather and a fun task allowed the 24 pilots that signed in a chance to score. 10 pilots were able to score! In 3rd place was Rick Portmore with 24’ 10”, 2nd place went to Dave Tennis with a throw of 8’ 6 ½ “ and Jerry Garcia came in 1st place with a throw of 2’ 6”. The honorable mention creative cheating $1 conciliation prize went to Paul Smith for throwing better on the 2nd target after Matt Guthrie threw his baggie to him from the ground. He would have gotten 1st place overall had he thrown only on the 2nd target – with his own baggie. Remember when you sign in you MUST have your N#.

DID YOU KNOW…..

New Rosters are in, come to the next couple of meetings to get your copy. “38” Year Pin is in $6.00.

Flying Events Safety Officer, John Hofer Send all comments and questions to: jhhballoon@gmail.com Did you know……... That some pilots have sent a crew member to register for them and have had a crew member brief them using a cell phone. Why are these bad ideas? The Waiver is an agreement between AAAA and the FAA that allows AAAA pilots to fly at 500 feet AGL instead of 1000 feet AGL during our flying events. That is if we follow the rules we have submitted to the FAA. The two rules that were breached above are:

Thanks go to everyone who donated cash and canned goods that will be donated to Road Runner Foodbank, our sign in help Judy and Roy Simons, Phred McAllaster & John Hofer who helped with weather and calling the task and our scorers Bill Kennedy, Dave Bagley, Lynn & John Hofer. The July flying event will be at Balloon Fiesta Park, Saturday, July 11th with pilot registration at 5:30am with the pilot brief at 6:00am. ***CHANGE FOR THE next flying events committee meeting will be Monday, July 6th at 5:30pm at Chama Brewing Company on the Pan American Freeway.

Event/Scoring Rules – Revised May 2008 Be aware that when you register each month you are signing the following: CERTIFICATE OF WAIVER and AUTHORIZATION (Attachment F), Certificate of Understanding, issued by the Albuquerque FSDO for compliance with the event waiver. SIGN IN CLOSES WHEN BRIEFING BEGINS.

WAYS AN MEANS First of all our next meeting will be July 28th at 5:30pm at the Range Café on Menaul.

Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association Balloon Flight Operation Manual AAAA Flying Events

The more hand and brains we have the lighter the load and the more we can get done.

II. Responsibilities and Procedures C. Pilot and Flight Event Crewmembers …………..All pilots shall attend daily event pilot briefing before each flight.

Projects in progress: Garage Sale, Saturday September 12th. We will rent spaces for $35.00 each. Bring your own stuff to sell. We will also take on some stuff of yours to sell. Place: Balloon Museum Parking lot. Time: 7am – 3pm. If you do arts and crafts or know someone who does, rent a space!

The waiver also states: “All relevant registration files, pilot registration information, etc. shall be maintained by the organizer for at least 45 days after the event and will be made available to the FAA upon request.” Scoring Rules Revised May 2008.

Panda Express Night Out. First night out is planned for the week of August 11 (we don’t have the exact day yet). We will announce the date at the next meeting. We will have flyers available at the meeting, in the August Cloudbouncer and on the web.

So by having a crew member sign in or not being present at the briefing is a breach of agreement with the FAA.
