very cool and will be fully detailed at the June Meeting. So get started recruiting and remember we welcome all people that are in love with balloons…they don't have to have one!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER By Debbie Fowler

This contest is not the only thing we have up our collective sleeves. Please stay tuned for complete updates on continued membership opportunities and many fun activities we have in the works for you!!

Ok, so we really didn't have April showers to bring May flowers…does that mean that since we've had May showers we'll have June flowers? That would be nice. The winds of spring finally calmed down a bit to get in a couple great weekends of flying.

Thanks for Being a Member of AAAA and see you soon! Deb Fowler

New Mexico State Championships were held over the Memorial Day Holiday and even though flights were weathered out Saturday, Sunday and Monday were terrific! The New Mexico State Champ is……..look inside for the Top Gun Report!!

BOARD MEETING MINUTES President Deb Fowler called the meeting to order at 6:20pm

To everyone that attended the April Meeting, hope you enjoyed Bill Glen's program as much as I did!! Bill's slide show was full of photos from not only years past "Old Timers Rally" in Roswell, but many pics from the early days of AAAA. A hoot to be sure! What fun to have a lot of our original AAAA members with us for this fun evening. We very much appreciate the "heritage" you represent, and strive to continue in those footprints….as much as possible….

Board Members Present: Deb Fowler, Lyn Kirkwood, Lichele Peete, Bud Hebrlee, Phred McAllaster, Paul Kress, Debbie Reynolds

Which brings me to something we "teased" at the monthly meeting. As you know if you join or rejoin AAAA from July 1st through the end of the year, the membership fee is half price. So a regular member would be $12.50 instead of $25.00.

New Members: Deb Fowler read the names of 3 new members.

Board Members Absent: Tonya Griego, Beth Wright-Smith, Tom Schroeder Guest: John Hofer Secretary’s Report: None

Treasurer’s Report: Lyn read the bank balances. $60.00 will be donated to Youth Balloonists. Treasurers Report was approved as printed.

We are starting our Membership Drive Contest EARLY. As of June 1st through July 31st only, if you rejoin AAAA, the regular membership is $12.50, the family membership would add only $2.50 per each additional family member, AND the initiation fee of $10.00 is waived completely. This contest will only be open from June 1st, 2009 through July 31st, 2009. Of course the half price is good throughout the rest of the 2009 year, but the initiation fee will be there too. SAVINGS of at least $12.50 and could be as much as $22.50 or more if you rejoin or join NOW.

Vice President’s Report: None, Beth out of town. We do know that Bill Glen will be presenting the May program on the Old Timers Rally in Roswell. Windtalker has been fixed. Deb Fowler has list of names and phone numbers she shared with Lichele so that more than one person can contact the appropriate people when help is needed. Flying Events: Next Event is Sunday June 14th in Rio Rancho. 5:15 registration. 5:45 Briefing. Education: No report

The contest works like this: The existing member that signs up the MOST new or renewed members between June 1st, 2009 and July 31st, 2009 gets 1st prize. The second most, 2nd prize, the 3rd most receives 3rd prize. In the event of a tie, the winners will be determined via a drawing. These prizes are

Crew D: Only 2 crews signed up for Daiquiri Dash, so event was canceled. Next Crew D event will be in August.

Ways & Means: Pins are ordered. Lots of plans for the new year being worked on. Roster will be at the printers any day now. It will be ready to distribute in June.

looning Blooper Video. July will be Dr Tom McConnell talking about his book on ballooning safety. Community Relations: Bud wanted to thank all those who responded so quickly to the request from Camp Enchantment.

Community Relations: Bud is getting a lot of last minute requests. He was told to use his best judgment on whether he passes on to the membership or tells the requester it can not be handled at this time.

Flying Events: Next flying event will be June 14th at the Rio Rancho launch site. Their next meeting is June 7th at the Applebee’s on San Mateo and Academy.

Special Events: Paul will be having his first committee meeting in June

Crew D: Their next event will be a back to school theme in August.

New Business: Topics under discussion were Budget, Dues, Membership and hotel room rental. New Budget was approved.

Education: No report Special Events: They will be having their first meeting on June 12th at Paul’s house.

Everyone was asked to bring their committee notebooks to the next board meeting so they can be updated.

Ways and Means: Roster should be available in June. Pins are on order and should be in soon. A garage sale is still being planned for September 12th, save your goodies. We will also be doing a dinner at Panda Express soon. Be looking in the Cloudbouncer for more information.

Meeting adjourned at 7:55pm

COMMITTEE REPORTS

SuperiAire will hold a safety seminar on Saturday June 20th.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Program was Bill Glenn from Roswell. His talk was about the start of balloon fiesta and the Roswell Old Timers Rally. He had many pictures and stories to tell about the start of ballooning in New Mexico. Bill also donated all of his old Cloudbouncers which should make our collection complete.

Dear Mr. Hebrlee, I was informed today that American Cancer Society legal department has prohibited the camp from allowing hot air ballooning. Please note that I am disappointed with their decision. I truly appreciate all of your efforts in organizing this event. I know that your enthusiasm and willingness to coordinate the morning means a lot to me. I know the campers would have loved the experience.

Secretary’s Report: None Treasurer’s Report: Lyn stated the 2009-2010 budget had been set and that the treasurer’s report will be published in the Cloudbouncer.

I wish you all the best, Helen Pino

Dear fellow AAAA Members:

WAYS AN MEANS We are working on new and old ideas for raising funds for the club. Here is a list of a few of the ideas.

It is with regret that I must report such sad news. The scheduled tether rides have been cancelled due to, you guessed it, legal reasons. Kind of sad when when you think about it but what else can I say? I thought it would have been a wonderful thing for these children to be children for a day.

1. Garage Sale – September 12th. Location not yet set, but hopefully the Balloon Museum parking lot. So start saving your stuff you no longer want to keep. Ellie Mason and Anne Dickie are helping to organize this project. Keep you eyes peeled in future issues of the Cloudbouncer for more details.

So, I'll continue by saying, my sincere thank you to those of you who volunteered their time and equipment for the American Cancer Society Camp Enchantment tether: Patrick Lamb, Frank O'Neil, Carolyn Grantham, Colleen Valls, and Art Swenka. You are much appreciated.

2. Panda Express Dinner. Panda Express and other restaurants offer groups a percentage of sales. Since we all have to eat meals we thought this would be a relatively easy way to raise funds. When we set the date you will need to get a copy of the flyer and make copies for your friends and family and then on the designated night bring the flyer, have a meal and turn in the flyer. The club will then get 20% of the sales for our group that night. We will be doing 2 on the east side of town on 2 on the west side, so no one has to drive to far to participate. Again watch the Cloudbouncer for the flyer.

Warmly, Bud Hebrlee, Community Relations Director FLYING EVENTS By Lichele Peete It’s always fun registering pilots and hearing the same comment over and over again “This isn’t what I expected . . . it is so windy at my house.” Note to self . . . I now have it on good authority that when there are canyon winds, we can get a quick flight in from Balloon Fiesta Park. Unfortunately, no one wanted to be the first one off the field before the sun came over the mountain to take advantage of the initial pi balls heading South-East until one brave sole decided to make a go of it (along with 4 others following closely behind). They had a great hop over to Roy Road as the winds switched around to the North after the sun came up over the Sandias. It was great to see and visit with Keith and Debbie Sproul as they headed back to New Jersey!

3. We are looking at getting shirts again. Polo or tshirts, maybe even a denim shirt. If you have ideas for designs please let Debbie Reynolds know what your ideas are. We are also looking at getting some other merchandise to sell. 4. Would you like to be flocked by flamingos again? That could be happening this year also. We have lots of ideas but need more help carrying out the plans. If you would like to help out for any of these projects, come join us at our next meeting, Tuesday June 23rd at 5:30pm at the Range Café on Menaul. This is just before our meeting so you don’t have to take 2 nights out of your month to help the club. If you would like to come let Debbie know so we can get a table large enough to hold all of us.

We had less than 20 pilots register for the event with only participation points awarded to those that wanted to try and prove the wind gods wrong. Thanks to every one who donated cash and canned goods that will be donated to Road Runner Foodbank. The June flying event will be out in Rio Rancho, Sunday, June 14th with pilot registration at 5:15am with the pilot brief at 5:45am. Here are the easy directions out to the field: from Northern & Broadmor (4 way stop sign) go North past the subdivision at the top of the hill, continue north a bit and then head west toward the field. The next Flying Events committee meeting will be Sunday, June 7th at 6:30pm at Applebee’s on San Mateo and Academy.

SPECIAL EVENTS The first Special Events meeting will be on Friday, June 12th at 6:00pm. location will be at 1609 Hiawatha Drive NE, Albuquerque 87112. Food and drinks will be provided; all welcome. Thanks, Paul

TOP GUN

specialists understand your special needs.

The New Mexico State Championship was held over the Memorial weekend in Albuquerque. After getting weathered out Saturday morning, Sunday and Monday were two beautiful Albuquerque mornings where 21 pilots competed in a total of 6 task.

One thing you might try is asking for a Briefer in the southwest. Briefers in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas have a “standard balloon briefing”. They know things about the terrain, the available weather stations, and the weather patterns in their areas especially, but since the data is available nationally, you can ask for a balloon brief anywhere else – say central Missouri – and they can access all the aviation data in that area as well.

The Top Gun Board would like to congratulate Nick Meleski from Albuquerque on winning the Championship, along with all the other pilots on some great flying. Nick proved that you don't need a racer to compete. He was flying his 105. Below are the top 10.

Lockheed Martin’s phone tree is set up so that if you call and ask for Texas, and it happens that all the Briefers assigned to Texas are busy, within a few seconds the system starts looking for an available Briefer in the surrounding states. This accomplishes two things: it reduces your hold time, and it attempts to get your call to someone familiar with the area you want, or in the case of balloonists, someone familiar with the weather products you prefer. This system has significantly reduced hold times nationwide.

1. Nick Meleski 2. Joe Heartsill 3. Gary Heavin 4. Kinnie Gibson 5. Keith Takach 6. Owen Keown 7. Ron Frusher 8. Cory Atchley 9. Brooke Owen 10. Steve Adams

If you want to speak to someone at a specific facility, whoever answers your call can put your call back into the queue for that facility. In this case your call will stay in the queue until someone from that facility is available, which may involve holding for a few minutes.

We will see you next year. Thanks, Cory Atchley President of Top Gun

Another thing to keep in mind is that the system allows you flexibility when you need information from some other place. For example, if you are in Arkansas and you want to attend a balloon event at the Grand Canyon, while preplanning you can call the 1800-WX BRIEF phone number and ask for Arizona.

ANY BRIEFER…..IS THIS THE BEST WAY TO USE THE SYSTEM? By Rose Marie Kern A recent issue of AOPA magazine pointed out to pilots that the fastest way to get a weather briefer is to call the 1-800-WXBRIEF number and say “Any Briefer”.

Specialists from New Mexico or Colorado can help a flat-land pilot understand mountain flying, or you can call Illinois, Indiana, Michigan or Ohio to learn about flying the Great Lakes area. Have a question about the famous Santa Ana winds? Call California. This is a valuable tool for getting specific information well in advance of the actual flight.

Well, they are right, this is the way to get someone fast, but is this what you really want? When you say “Any Briefer” the phone tree will send your call to the first available specialist – without regard to where you are calling from.

The highest call volumes are between 6am and 10am in each time zone nationwide. Keeping this in mind, we suggest that if you do want pre-planning information, give Flight Service a call later in the day as a courtesy to other pilots whose flights are imminent.

There are times when this is just fine. For instance, asking general ATC questions. Just keep in mind that you could be talking to someone not familiar with your area, or with ballooning in general. Balloonists around the country are frustrated by the fact that the FAA requires Lockheed Martin to ask specific questions prior to giving a briefing, and most places don’t have enough balloonists locally that the

Do you remember the TIB’s? Transcribed Information Broadcasts (TIBs) are still available to pilots. These are recordings of the weather and aviation

[8]

information pertinent to predetermined routes. Some pilots prefer to call them instead of talking to a Briefer when they are flying short local hops. The TIBs phone number is 1-877-484-2799.

bringing the Shuttle (which unfortunately did not get to go up) and to the Colorado pilots that came out and tried. Al Lowenstein and now LT Ryan Lowenstein!!!!!

The flight service phone tree allows you great flexibility when it comes to flight planning and briefs. Be sure you know what you want before you call and ask for “Any Briefer” and you will have a more pleasant briefing experience. Rose Marie Kern has worked in aviation for over 25 years. If you’d like to ask Rose a question send her an email at author@rosemariekern.com.

SHORT BLASTS Balloon Summer Camp at the Balloon Museum will “blow you away” from the regular classroom into an interactive, hands-on experience for children 3rd – 8th grades. You will learn the basics of hot air ballooning such as: • The balloon system (envelope, burners and basket) and how they work; • Weather basics – visit a TV weather station; • How to read maps and charts; • Geocaching – using GPS monitor; • Make and fly a 7 foot tissue paper hot-air balloon; • Visit a balloon repair station; • Be a real, live member of a balloon crew for a pilot and inflate the balloon for a tethered ride (weather permitting); and • Learn from experienced pilots and crew members how it all works! The tether/glow at US Air Force Academy was on Wednesday, May 20th. We managed to get some cadets up for tether rides, but the weather certainly did not cooperate! I stood up two times, and got about 15 minutes of tethering in each time before the winds kicked in, 3 other balloons inflated but I don't think managed rides before they also got blown down. The glow did not happen, it was almost too windy to do a candlestick, and since is was cold and ugly there were few observers. We did manage to get some great photos and hopefully the effort will enhance the relationship between the local HA balloon club and the Academy. Thank you Goodie for coming to help, Mike Shrum for
