See you Soon
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! We made it to 2009, amazing isn’t it?
Deb Fowler firstname.lastname@example.org 239-1146
Hope your holiday season was a wonderful one. It’s January, and we (AAAA) have SO much happenin’ so hang on and let’s talk about it.
First, just a Reminder, the AAAA Monthly Club Meeting location has MOVED! Starting January 27th, 2009 we will be meeting at the MCM Elegante (the old Holiday Inn) Menaul and University. Meetings start at the same time, 7pm with the program first, just like we’ve been doing. We will be in the large meeting room, and Jay will be there with the bar set up in the back of the room. So I have a challenge for you, if you know someone, (and don’t we all) that hasn’t been to a meeting in a while, call ‘em up and bring ‘em with you!! Let’s start the year with a full room, and some member renewals! See You There!
FLYING EVENTS By Lichele Peete Even though the weather didn’t cooperate, over 30 pilots registered, brought over 50 presents and donated $45 in cash for the December Jingle Bell NonRally on Saturday. Sunday a few diehards came out and watched the storm come in from the west and then went to breakfast and watched the snow fall! Thanks to everyone who came out and contributed to the donations. The presents were taken to All Faiths Receiving Home and the cash was donated to the Road Runner Food bank. At the next general meeting in January we will find out the winners of the Top 20 spots for 2008 flying events! Posted in this Cloudbouncer is the 2009 Flying Events Calendar. The January flying event will be Saturday the 10th at Balloon Fiesta Park. Pilot Registration will be at 6:45am with Pilot Brief at 7:15am. The flying events committee will have a meeting Sunday, January 4th at Applebee’s on Academy and San Mateo at 6:30pm.
Next, speaking of renewals, Ms Kay will have membership renewals in the mail to you soon. It’s important to renew so you can vote and don’t miss anything that goes on throughout the year. Next, elections are on the horizon. This year the positions open are the following: Vice President, Secretary, Community Relations, Special Events, and Ways and Means. If you would like to participate in your club, please contact Garry Haruska 858-1185 email@example.com. We have lots of plans and ideas going forward and would love to have you as a part of it.
CREW D We had Santas, yes more than 1 santa…visiting us for the Winterly Wrapped Woven Wicker basket decorating competition at the Jingle bell non rally…2 of the 3 entries came complete with Santa making a guest appearance.
Next, the archiving process will be in full swing and we need your help. If you are interested in lending a hand, please call me @ 239-1146. We already have Cloudbouncers from the beginning to 1988. Thank You to Anne Dickey. We will be scanning these to DVDs so nothing is lost to time. Do you have 1989 to present?
Crew D wants to thanks The Red Rock Balloon Rally Association for their donation of Rally shirts for our prizes in this competition. Joe Candelaria and crew completed their decorations with colored themes which matched their balloon patterns and this did catch the judges’ attention to garner them 1st place. Ken Paulk served them as their Santa complete with the white beard and appropriate hat.
Next, the January Flying Event will be January 10th, 2009 at Balloon Fiesta Park, maybe the weather will cooperate!! Next, the registration form for Friends and Lovers is on the website and in this issue. Don’t wait, register now!!
At this point our judges, Barbara Fricke, Ann Piper, and John Hofer decided that the remaining entries tied for first place also.
share their knowledge of ballooning. Education Committee
The Str8 up crew with their Santa and Pilot Paul Kress completed their duties with an electrically lit basket and garlands.
DID YOU KNOW…..
Janet Peterson and the crew of Silver Lining wrapped a 4.9 Balloonworks basket with all the trimmings and, once the judging was complete, the crew placed all of the wrapped gifts donated by the pilots who entered the event.
Did you know……...
Sunday was a wonderful day for sleeping in and once that was realized by those who showed up, we savored the gingerbread men brought out by Joe Candelaria and crew.
6. Persons or aircraft not appearing on the current AAAA membership roster, and subsequently added to the membership roster, may not participate without specific approval by Debbie J. Look for some fun games as part of the Friends and Lovers rally in February. EDUCATION The Education Committee has scheduled the following seminars:
7. Balloons operating for hire are not authorized to operate under this Waiver. 8. Balloons conducting flight instruction for a certificate, rating, or operating privilege, are authorized to operate under this Waiver. However, student pilot solo flights are not authorized.

Each pilot must hold the appropriate pilot certification (minimum Private Pilot) with Lighter-Than-Air and Balloon Class Rating. Our next committee meeting will be Monday night, January 12, 2009; 6:00 pm at AIBF– please come and share your vision for future educational opportunities.
OK, how many of us at one time or another completed our landing currency after pilot briefing and before flying to the target? My understanding of the above is that this is something we shouldn’t be doing. That in order to be compliant with the rules of

winds are taking us any direction except South through Southwest, we’ll be flying away from the area.
Remember last month’s Did you know…….? “Note: Failure to comply with any standard or special provision is a violation of the terms of this Certificate of Waiver or Authorization and justification for cancellation of this Certificate………..”
As an instructor, and safety type, I see an advantage to this for us. This tower is not as busy as ABQ is – here is our chance to turn on our radio and learn to interact with an Air Traffic Control Tower without the intimidation of a larger, Class C airspace like ABQ – Dave has promised his guys will be gentle. Can’t remember all those words and phrases? Dig into the back (the portion you haven’t been looking at) of the FAR/AIM book and reread Chapter 4 (Air Traffic Control), Section 2 (Radio Communications Phraseology and Techniques) for a refresher.

JD’s HANGAR Double Eagle Tower and Class D Airspace
Make it a New Year’s Resolution to be safe – no matter what you are doing.
By now I’m sure you have heard Double Eagle Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower (AEG ATCT) is up and running – as is the Class D airspace surrounding the airport. The current (82nd) edition of the Sectional Aeronautical Chart (effective 23 OCT 2008 through 7 MAY 2009) depicts the Class D airspace. Since the sectional was published before the ATCT was “officially” open, it does not show the upper limits of the Class D airspace (Surface up to and including 7,500 feet Mean Sea Level) or the ATCT primary frequency (118.3 MHz). The tower operates daily (and the Class D airspace is in effect) from 0600 to 2200 local time.
2009 FRIENDS AND LOVERS RALLY
What is important for us is the approach key extending to the North-Northeast (NNE). If you are going to launch from the 19th Street Ball fields in Rio Rancho, look off to the South-Southwest (SSW) at the large water storage tank on the top of the hill. That storage tank is collocated with the Outer Marker (one of the five components of the Instrument Landing System [ILS] for Double Eagle) and is the far NNE end of the Class D airspace. The approach key is 1 nautical mile (6,000 feet, 2,000 yards, or a whole lot of paces) either side of that large water storage tank and extends upward to 8,000 feet MSL.
Get ready for the 2009 Friends & Lovers Rally on February 14 & 15. We will have crew games, pilot competitions and lots of fun. The Pilot Registration is included in the Cloudbouncer and is available on the website. In addition, if you or someone you know would like to be a sponsor of this great event, the Sponsor Registration is also included in the Cloudbouncer as well as on the website.
I spoke with Dave Moore (the AEG ATCT Manager) about the proximity of the 19th Street Launch Site and how would he like us to interact with the AEG ATCT. Dave is a long-time New Mexico resident and was the former manager of the Farmington ATCT. He has asked if we are radio equipped to call the AEG ATCT after we launch just to let them know we are in the area. If we are not radio equipped to call prior to launch (no cell phones in flight) to 3525595, 5596, or 5597 and let the controllers know you will be launching from 19th Street. Obviously, if the
If you are interested in helping, the committee is meeting on January 5, 2009, 5:30pm @ SuperiAire Technologies. As always, the more the merrier!!!! We look forward to seeing everyone at the event in February!!!

SHORT BLASTS Announcement. One of the Viking Clan members has been diagnosed with cancer. It runs through several vital organs and has been found in his brain. There is a fund set up for him at US New Mexico Credit Union.
As we should all know now, our FSS closes in January. The final FSS tour in Albuquerque took place shortly before Christmas and was attended by three balloonists along with the fixed-wing pilots. Once our FSS closes, we will be first routed to Dallas. While that sounds like a bad fit, Albuquerque FSS personnel told us that a number of the DFW FSS personnel trained in Albuquerque and are familiar with weather in the mountains, desert and high altitude. I didn’t know that FSS personnel are listed to brief in certain locales and the calls are routed to them first if they are available. So, chances of getting someone who really does understand what he is talking about when briefing Albuquerque pilots is much greater than I thought. I had assumed incorrectly that you just “got who you got” randomly.
“The Jerry Nuber Fund, Account Number 389775” For more information please contact: Mark.E.Hofheins@intel.com Upcoming Meeting Program. In January we have Daniel Cave, one of our member experienced special shape pilots. A few of the shapes he’s flown are a grocery cart, a daiquiri glass, a cow and a dinosaur, as well as some less complicated shapes. Find out how they are the same and different from our tear-drop shapes.
Deb Fowler has also arranged for Rose Kern, who was in charge of the tour, to write an article for the Cloudbouncer starting in our next issue. We look forward to that and to success with the new system.
Clarification. In the December issue of the Cloudbouncer, all of the cluster balloon photos including the cover were taken at the Fiesta Del Globo 2008 in Chihuahua Mexico.
