Similarities and Differences in Chiropractic

Have you wondered why there are so many different styles and techniques used in Chiropractic? If you have been to more than one Chiropractor before, you probably noticed that their style was different from the last doctor you saw. ere’s actually a really good reason why this occurs.

A good analogy to explain this is the task and joy of climbing a mountain. ere are so many different types of gear you could purchase and prepare ahead of your climb. You may shop at a different outfitting store than your best friend. en on climbing day you determine when to leave, which path to take and watch the weather all day. ere are so many variables. Once you reach the top and take in the view, it is breathtaking and glorious. But your friend may be tired and hungry and see a different view than the one you have just experienced. You both reached the summit, but your journey and thoughts about the experience may vary.

Chiropractic doctors are similar in that they determine Chiropractic styles that they feel are the best fit for their technique style and what they feel will give their patients great results. All doctors are working towards the same result for their patient, they just may get there on a slightly different trail and with different equipment. But the view from the top (the results of regular Chiropractic care) are the same, amazing! Give us a call for your own unique view, 303-993-6092.

An Exciting Announcement About Early Education Options!

Exploring early education options for your little one’s early years can be a challenging, stressful, and overwhelming process for families. ere are many important pieces to consider when making a decision about their early learning years such as class size, curriculum, staff, location, and cost, just to list a few. Knowing that this decision and the need for early childhood education are such a prominent need and focus in our community, I am excited to announce the launch of Hills Academy in January 2023!!

Hills Academy is a ministry of Northern Hills Church which is located on Highway 7 in Brighton. Our vision at Hills Academy is to provide a Faith-based educational environment where your child can explore, imagine, learn, and grow into the beautifully and wonderfully made person God has made them to be.

For our January launch we will be offering a 3 year old class on Tuesdays and ursday and a 4 year old class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with both half day and full day options. I encourage you to visit our website at, https://hills.academy/ , to check out all the wonderful things that we have coming, to learn more about enrollment, and to schedule a tour.

Here’s your ‘recession survival’ checklist

It’s unfortunate, but recessions are a fairly normal part of the economic landscape. When a recession occurs, how might you be affected? The answer depends on your individual situation, but regardless of your circumstances, you might want to consider the items in this recession survival checklist:

• Assess your income stability. If your employment remains steady, you may not have to do anything different during a recession. But if you think your income could be threatened or disrupted, you might want to consider joining the “gig economy” or looking for freelance or consulting opportunities.

• Review your spending. Look for ways to trim your spending, such as canceling subscription services you don’t use, eating out less often, and so on.

• Pay down your debts. Try to reduce your debts, especially those with high interest rates.

• Plan your emergency fund. If you haven’t already built one, try to create an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account.

• Review your protection plan. If your health or life insurance is tied to your work, a change in your employment status could jeopardize this coverage. Review all your options for replacing these types of protection. Also, look for ways to lower premiums on home or auto insurance, without significantly sacrificing coverage, to free up money that could be used for health/life insurance.

• Keep your long-term goals in mind. Even if you adjust your portfolio during times of volatility, don’t lose sight of your long-term goals. Trying to “outsmart” the market with short-term strategies can often lead to missteps and missed opportunities.

• Don’t stop investing. If you can afford it, try to continue investing. Coming out of a recession, stock prices tend to bottom out and then rebound, so if you had headed to the investment “sidelines,” you would have missed the opportunity to benefit from a market rally.

• Revisit your performance expectations. During a bear market, you will constantly be reminded of the decline of a particular market index, such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. But instead of focusing on these short-term numbers, look instead at the long-term performance of your portfolio to determine if you’re still on track toward meeting your goals.

• Assess your risk tolerance. If you find yourself worrying excessively about declines in your investment statements, you may want to reevaluate your tolerance for risk. One’s risk tolerance can change over time — and it’s important you feel comfortable with the amount of risk you take when investing.

• Keep diversifying. Diversification is always important for investors — by having a mix of stocks, mutual funds and bonds, you can reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. To cite one example: Higher-quality bonds, such as Treasuries, often move in the opposite direction of stocks, so the presence of these bonds in your portfolio, if appropriate for your goals, can be valuable when market conditions are worsening. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification cannot guarantee profits or protect against all losses in a declining market.)

A recession accompanied by a bear market is not pleasant. But by taking the appropriate steps, you can boost your chances of getting through a difficult period and staying on track toward your important

goals.

Flu Season Is Coming!

Having years of passion for health and

it took having kids in 2016 to really inspire me to create and cultivate the business and community Mrs. Glover’s Goods has now become. I wanted to provide my family with the best opportunity at natural immunity, equipping them with the best products for their bodies.

I dedicated my time in researching ways to boost the immune system. I stumbled upon a little berry that has since become one of my best allies.

sharing my love for elderberry with my friends and family, I quickly saw how sharing something I was passionate about with others, needed to be shared with as many people as possible. That is when I launched Mrs. Glover’s Goods in 2019.

I am here to help give others the confidence to know that they are capable of supporting their own health and wellness with something as simple as a daily serving of elderberry. I am committed to making other people’s lives easier and helping them create healthy habits. I have carefully crafted delicious elderberry products to do just that. Products that are superior to others on the market today, a product that you can trust. Here are what customers are saying about Mrs. Glover’s Goods:

“I love this stuff. I use it daily and have it as part of my morning ritual for self care. It’s got the good stuff without the additives you find in ones at the grocery store. Since regularly using it, I have noticed stronger immune defense against those sick around me. Plus being a portable bottle makes it easy to travel with. I highly recommend.”

team help me sell my house. I live out of state but Mike made it feel like we were both in the same room throughout the entire process. He listed my home and by the end of the day we had a deal in place. Mike really worked hard to get my home sold fast, without compromising the value of my home. Mike really listened to all of my concerns and needs. The best part was this was not just a sale to Mike. He would always ask about my family and made me feel it was a get together with a friend rather than a business deal.

Weakness is NOT a Virtue

Yesterday at school a kid pushed Justin against the wall and called him names, and while naturally he would have reacted in kind or worse, this time Justin did not respond, he held himself back and did nothing. As his dad related the story to me a week ago, he said that this was huge for Justin. He’s always been a bit impulsive and showing restraint was something new. When he picked him up from school his dad told him that he was very proud of him for holding himself back, but then he was troubled when Justin asked him: “Dad, why do we learn Karate if we can’t use it…?” It was a great reflection coming from a five year old.

Dr. Jordan Peterson often says that “a man is better when he is a dangerous man who is being good, than he would be if he was just a good man who wasn’t capable of being dangerous.” at is why martial artists train, the goal IS to become dangerous, while at the same time fostering a spirit of calm and disciplined restraint in the application of their abilities. In restraint lies the virtue, not in weakness or the inability to defend oneself.

At our Dojo, just like in every traditional Karate dojo, we recite the Dojo Kun at the end of each class. e Dojo Kun are the tenets of a Karate practitioner. One of those tenets states that one ought to: “Refrain from violent behavior.” So I ask our students what they make of that phrase. Answers range from “You should be nice to others”, or “Do not hit people”, but many do come up with the correct interpretation of “You should try not to use Karate unless you really, really have to”. And I could not have said it better.

As for Justin, he continues to learn about himself, how, as he becomes stronger and more skilled, his confidence allows him not to react out of weakness and perceived helplessness. From my experience, I truly believe that Karate empowers both children and adults to feel more secure in themselves. And secure individuals seem to be more in control of their emotions, they seldom lash out, burst out in anger, or feel the need to yell at others. is is what Justin is fi nding out without even realizing it. As Martial Arts instructors, observing this progression is a validation of our life’s work and our legacy to future generations.

If you know of someone, who like Justin, could benefit from Karate training, have them contact Colorado Karate Club for a free consultation. It may be one of the best things you could do for them.

Medicare’s

Annual Election Period Is Here!

Do You Know What To Do? What That Means?

passion is helping people understand Medicare.

ME TODAY!

Jennifer Bell Insurance Agent

Medicare Annual Enrollment Ends December 7th

There are so many options to choose from when it comes to Medicare and it is very overwhelming. ere are two basic things you will be looking at: Medicare Supplements or Medicare Advantage Plans.

Medicare Supplements pay 2nd to Medicare. ey follow Medicare wherever it goes. is means they don’t really have a network. As long as the provider, hospital or clinic takes Original Medicare, they will take the Medicare Supplement. Most Medicare Supplement plans will not offer dental, vision or hearing insurance.

Medicare Advantage Plans do work in networks. When I’m looking at a Medicare Advantage plan for a client, I go through a couple of steps. 1st - I look to see how my client’s medications are covered and how much it will cost.

Once I know which plans will cover the medications at the lower copay amounts, then I start to look at physician networks. Are my client’s physicians in the network of that plan?

When I have a grasp on that, then we dig into the benefits: copays, max out of pocket amount, and extra benefits like dental, vision and other things.

I hear stories of how a phone sales agent will not take all of these things into account, leaving folks with a plan that is not the best fit for them.

If you would like to compare plans for your personal coverage, I am happy to help. Now is the time of year to do it too! e Annual Election Period will end Dec. 7 at midnight and you’ll be locked in for 2023.

The month of November is a special one for the Melissa Rippy Agency as we celebrate nine years of business (November 1st) and are grateful to still be here for our clients and our community. ank you for your continued business, support and trust to protect what matters most.

November 1st we are also hosting another blood drive at the Brighton Pavilions. We have a limited number of slots available and you can register at www.vitalant.org with Blood Drive code 10360.

Also on November 1st, we will be heading back to Hughes Station with Elsie the Little Free Mobile Library. en on November 10th, we will be having a ribbon cutting to celebrate Elsie’s new wrap, funded by our amazing community. We hope you can join us!

It’s also time for Pie & Grace. Grace Eleanor (Moline) Fletcher was one of my most favorite clients. Over the past several years, Grace would call me throughout the year to make sure we were still giving away pie at anksgiving for our clients. She would sign up to bring pie to her family gathering and was always planning ahead, no matter what month it may have been.

Grace passed away on November 2nd, 2020, and beginning in 2020 with the permission of Grace’s family, we renamed our pie giveway as “Pie & Grace”. Every year, we offer our clients their choice of a pumpkin or apple pie.

anksgiving is a time to reflect on those around us and give thanks for the many blessings we have. is year and every year, don’t forget two things: Pie & Grace.

Protect Your Family!

Estate planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in cookie-cutter, form driven estate plans. For example…. Mary and Bill left their son John a substantial inheritance. John had grown up, gotten married, completed college, and had a good job. en came the accident. As John was rushing to work on a wintery morning, he lost control of his car and crashed into a school bus. Children were injured. John was sued and found negligent. e resulting claim far exceeded his auto insurance limits, and even after the insurance paid $1,000,000 to those injured, he was staring at a court judgment of more than $3,000,000. His assets would have to go to pay the amount due. John was looking at bankruptcy. en he remembered the good news.

Bill and Mary had sought legal advice. e first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning because their estate value was below the estate tax exemption. He told them to designate John as the beneficiary on all the assets, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” ey weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals.

eir primary objective was to protect John after their deaths, so Bill and Mary left their assets in trust for John, not directly to him. As a result, John was able to keep his inheritance. While they never thought this would happen to their son, their foresight was now going to pay off.

Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Clearly it was.

With the economy causing concern, here are savings opportunities that can help some.

If you are on Medicare and have income and assets below certain levels, you may qualify for Federal and State assistance to help with costs of Medicare premiums and copayments and/or reduced cost prescriptions. Don’t take medications? What you should know is that qualifying for the Federal assistance program called ‘Extra Help’ may allow you to save on your healthcare needs too. Applying isn’t hard, call me for assistance or direction.

If you need to understand you dental coverage with Medicare I can help, the insurance companies are improving options for 2023.

Another savings opportunity, I found recently is associated with the SNAP benefit. With the EBT SNAP card you can access discount admission at many area locations. Admission fees are often $3 or less and cannot be paid with the card, it is only used to qualify for the discounts.

Some examples of places that provide discounts:

• Denver Zoo

• Children’s Museum of Denver

• Denver Museum of Nature and Science

• Denver Botanic Gardens

And many more!

listed here are $1 per person for up to 10 people! You can check the Colorado Department of Human Services website for a complete list at: https://cdhs.colorado.gov/ebt-discounts

An Option for Back Pain –Epidural Steroid Injection

suffer from

and

can affect between 5-10% of all adults.

chronic pain affects work performance, mental health, medication intake and really all aspects of life. ere are many different approaches to managing

pain and usually more conservative

tried first such as massage, chiropractic care, physical therapy, or alternative methods. But those fail in a percentage of people and an option for them is an epidural steroid injection.

Chronic Back Pain can be caused by a number of problems such as:

• Disk herniation

• Spinal stenosis with radicular pain

• Some types of sciatica pain

• Facet or nerve root cysts with radicular pain

• Post laminectomy syndrome

An epidural steroid injection works when medication is placed by a needle into the epidural space in your spinal column. e steroid medication has antiinflammation properties that relieve swelling and pain. Numbing medication is delivered at the site of the injection and the procedure is done in a room with x-ray equipment . Most patients are monitored after the procedure and able to drive themselves home. Typically, the results are immediate but can take several days to two weeks to fully have effect.

We are your local pain management clinic in Brighton! If you are interested in this procedure or to discuss back pain management, give us a call to schedule a consultation with Jeff Toups, CRNA 720-823-0123.

As the weather begins to cool, this brings another exciting season of everyone’s favorite holiday traditions. As you prepare for big family dinners and holiday shopping, be sure to prepare for the upcoming cold and flu season.

The best way to be prepared is to get vaccinated; this includes you, your children, grandchildren, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, etc. It is recommended for everyone 6 months and up to receive their annual influenza vaccine, and it is best to get it early in the year before flu hits hard (typically in December and January). If you haven’t received your covid vaccine or updated omicron booster, now would be a great time to get it. Another important virus that is prevalent this time of year is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, which can cause serious illness and hospitalization in young infants and toddlers. We do not have a vaccine against RSV, so it is important to continue to maintain appropriate social distancing and regular handwashing to prevent its spread to our vulnerable patients.

If you or your family do become ill, make sure you stay home from large gatherings, school, church, parties, in order to prevent further spread. We recommend plenty of rest to allow your body time to recover, as well as plenty of fluids. Tylenol and Ibuprofen can help to treat any fevers, pain, or body aches. Most of the time, over-the-counter cough medicines and decongestants are not recommended, especially in young children. In most cases, antibiotics are also not needed to help treat these types of infections, the body is equipped to fight off the infection on its own, but you can consult with your primary care provider if any medications are recommended for you.

Please visit the CDC website for more information on how you can stay safe and healthy this holiday season. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/season/index.html.

Considerations When Purchasing Life Insurance

There are several different life insurance products and features to consider when evaluating plans.

Discussing the importance of owning life insurance can be a sensitive topic — after all, few people like to talk about death. However, if others depend on your support, or if you have substantial assets that you wish to transfer to future generations, life insurance can be an important financial tool. ere are many types of insurance and features for you to consider if you are shopping for a plan.

Types of Life Insurance

Term insurance is perhaps the most common and least expensive form of life insurance — if you’re under age 50. ese policies are written for a specific period — 1 year, 10 years, 30 years, etc. — and often have the option for renewal, during which time the premiums are likely to increase. If you wish to lock in the premium for periods of up to 30 years, select a level term policy.

Whole life incorporates features of permanent protection with a savings account. You can lock in a premium rate, and part of the premium accrues a cash value as long as you continue to pay the premiums. As the savings amount increases, you can even borrow up to 90% of the policy’s cash value tax-free (though borrowing money reduces the policy’s death benefit and cash value).

Universal life is similar to whole life while including potentially higher earnings on the savings feature. You can also change the premium amount and withdraw cash, as well as possibly even change the face value of the policy.

ese also can offer a guaranteed return on cash value.

Variable Life policies generally feature fixed premiums and a flexible cash value policy. In fact, you can invest the cash value in your choice of stock, bond, or money market funding.1 However, keep in mind that the cash value and death benefit can fluctuate, too, based on the performance of your investment choice(s). ere is typically a floor for death benefits but no guarantee on cash values. Additionally, fees for these policies tend to be higher than for universal life. Finally, should you accrue investment earnings, they are tax-deferred as long as the funds remain in the insurance contract.

First-to-die life insurance insures the life of two people and pays a benefit upon the death of the first insured. is is useful for covering a mortgage or other large debt where there are multiple debtors. It is often used when funding buy-sell agreements within a closely held business.

How Much to Purchase ere is no correct amount of life insurance to purchase. Some use a formula based on income replacement, selecting 5 to 10 times your annual salary to calculate a coverage amount. Others use an amount based on personal needs and preferences.

To determine your unique income replacement need, consider that a sizable amount of your income currently goes to support your lifestyle and pay taxes. Determine your net earnings after taxes, then add your personal expenses, including housing, healthcare, food, etc. is total represents the amount that your insurance will need to replace.

When calculating income replacement for a nonworking spouse, coverage should provide for day care costs, housekeeping, and other types of care. Add those amounts to any net earnings from part-time employment.

Life insurance is an important part of a financial plan. Assessing the various options and asking the right questions can help you select a policy that provides the best coverage for you and your family.

When it comes to today’s hearing aids, there are many things to be thankful for, especially when we look back at how hearing aid technology has changed over time. While the first hearing improvement devices were some form of horn, the first electronic versions were huge devices the size of a piece of furniture and required the user to be confined to the room where it was located in order to hear better. Over time devices became smaller, more discreet and more versatile. For a time, body-worn aids with a wire that ran from the device in a pocket up to the patient’s ear allowed the user to be mobile and interact with others in more diverse situations.

However, the early devices were not customizable and essentially amplified all sounds by the same amount while allowing for simple overall volume adjustments. Some individuals had positive results with the devices, but many did not experience the same benefit since each individual has a different type and severity of hearing loss. Often, noisy environments or loud sounds would overwhelm the wearer who would either remove the device or turn it off. Analog adjustments eventually came along and allowed the wearer or a professional to use a small screwdriver to modify the amplification at different levels for a few different frequency ranges.

ese adjustments could help the wearer to hear more clearly, but more often than not, the user would have to make volume adjustments to get rid of screeching, whistling or other loud noises due to feedback that was irritating to others. Decreasing the volume to eliminate feedback led to decreased clarity and poorer hearing. Customized earmolds were developed that would make

for a much tighter fit to help eliminate some feedback.

As components became smaller, body worn aids were replaced with behind-the-ear hearing aids with custom earmolds, (some were even built into eye glasses) and eventually in-the-ear models were developed, followed by increasingly smaller devices, with the smallest currently available being the invisible-in-the-canal, or IIC. Digital technologies were introduced in the 1990s and improved through the 2000s as programmable devices made customization even better. Billions of dollars have been invested in research and development of prescription hearing aids.

Today’s devices are much smaller and premium technology has made most feedback a thing of the past. e benefits that come from custom individualized fitting in the form of highly-programmable digital hearing aids with custom made earmolds have made it possible for more people than ever to experience better hearing and improved communication. Tinnitus treatment applications have also been added to the devices.

While it is true that mass produced, one-size-fits-most devices are cheaper, customization provides for the best hearing experience. Proper fit and coupling of the hearing aid to the ear of the patient is critical to ensure the best possible hearing. ese prescription fit devices require a professional hearing test to ensure accurate programming. And the latest technology in prescription hearing aids allows for the hearing aid to analyze the

environment in real time and adjust itself at the touch of a button based on the individual’s

Ten Tips For Enjoying the Holidays

This information came from the Johns Hopkins Medicine website

1. Reflect on what is important to you during the holidays. This may change over time, but thinking about what you want for this holiday season will help you choose more intentionally about who you would like to spend time with and how you would like to spend the time. It’s hard to have a meaningful holiday if you don’t determine ahead of time what will give it meaning.

2. Make a plan as early as possible about what you will do during the holidays. Try to plan at least one activity that is important to you for each holiday that you celebrate. Feel free to initiate activities with family and friends. Consider volunteer activities. Making a plan well in advance can give you something to look forward to and help you feel a greater sense of control.

3. Communicate clearly how others can assist or support you. Accept offers to help shop, wrap or cook. Some people may not know how best to help, especially if your needs and desires have changed from last year. Most people are happy to help as long as they understand clearly what you want and they have enough time to provide the support.

4. Realize the holiday season is a marathon, not a sprint. In other words, pace yourself. While extra social gatherings can be exciting, you don’t want to compromise your physical or mental health by doing too much. Acknowledge that you cannot do everything for everyone. Practice saying “no” without guilt. Allow yourself the opportunity to grieve the loss of giving up some activities.

5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Try your best to make good food choices and relax to restore energy. Your endurance will be better if you can stick to your daily routine as much as possible, including exercise.

6. Manage your spending. It’s easy to feel the pressure of consumerism during the holidays. Decrease the financial stress by making and sticking to a budget. Thoughtfulness need not come with a hefty price tag. Gift solutions include: reducing the number of gifts; initiating a gift exchange; giving to a favorite charity in family members’ names; and providing gift certificates for babysitting, snow shoveling, a homecooked meal, or time together. Gift cards can also be purchased for small amounts and the receiver will enjoy thinking of you as he or she enjoys a cup of coffee or music download “on you.”

7. Monitor alcohol and medications – individually and together. It’s easy to overindulge in alcohol during the holidays. Moderation is key so that your balance and emotional well-being are not negatively impacted. If you do not usually drink alcohol, consider beforehand how alcohol and your medications may interact, especially if you’re taking a new medication or an increased dose. Maintain your daily medication schedule. Missed doses can cause you to feel less than your best or, worse, cause a medical issue that requires emergency care.

8. Manage your expectations for family gatherings. When multiple generations and multiple families celebrate together, it can be challenging to feel heard and understood. Be clear about what you need the most and flexible about the rest.

9. Think ahead about stories or observations from the past as a family that you’d like to share. You may know how a specific family tradition began or have a funny story to tell about the holidays when you were a child.

10. Reflect on what went well this holiday season and improvements you would like to make for next year.
