Vargas murder suspect still at large By Jeff Tucker Record Staff Writer
A Roswell man wanted on a murder warrant and considered dangerous allegedly killed Stormy Joel Vargas in retaliation for a murder that occurred just two days earlier at a Roswell bar in October 2013, court records state. Chaves County authorities on April 29 issued a warrant for the arrest of Steve Guardado on an open count of murder. According to authorities, Guardado, 27, aka “Panson” and “Gordo,” shot Vargas, 22, once in the head the night of Oct. 25, 2013, after luring Vargas outside his home at 614 E. Cherry St. in Roswell.

Police are seeking the public’s help in finding Guardado, who has ties to San Jose, Calif. Police said Guardado hastily left Roswell shortly after Vargas’ murder. Guardado, also known as Steven Gonzalez Guardado, was described as 5-feet-11inches tall, weighing about 280 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. We want to get what we believe to be a dangerous man into custody.”
Anyone with information about Guardado’s whereabouts was asked to call the Roswell Police Department at 575-624-6770 or Chaves County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-594-8477. According to a criminal complaint, Guardado shot and killed Vargas in retaliation for the fatal shooting of Victor Oaxaca Jr. that occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 23, 2013, outside Variety Liquor and Lounge at 1100 W. Second St. in Roswell. Christopher M. Trujillo, 26, was sentenced last week in Fifth Judicial District Court to eight years
in prison on voluntary manslaughter and firearm charges for the murder of the 25-year-old Oaxaca. Trujillo’s sentence was enhanced by Fifth Judicial District Judge Freddie Romero because Trujillo is a habitual offender and prior felon. Trujillo also received credit for 540 days served in the Chaves County Detention Center following his arrest. GHS students swim for MS fundraiser Staff Report
On Saturday, May 16, come and watch students at Goddard High School swim to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., students will be swimming laps, cannon balls and dives, all for donations to help the lives of people affected with MS. There will be door prizes, and the one to raise the most will receive the grand mystery prize. All donations raised will go to the Multiple Sclerosis, Association of America to provides the following services: For every $120 raised a shower chair is provided; for every $180 raised a four-wheel quad cane is provided; for every $300 two cooling vest are provided; for every
$600 a wheelchair is provided; for every $720 an MRI exam of the brain is provided. Swim for MS is something the GHS students say they are working hard for. One student leader of the project, sophomore Luis Lujan, is planning to raise $500. “Helping people has always been a passion of mine so I’m doing my best to make this project a success,” she said. Another leader is junior Seneca Luna, who is planning to raise $300. “This project has been fun to organize; I’m super excited for it,” she said. One school, Nancy Lopez Elementary, will do the event on May 12. The purpose of the event is to encourage kids to walk or bike to school to get more physical activity. Technically the rules state the students are the one who have to do the walking or bike riding, but this young man decided to be a little different and ride his horse to El Capitan Elementary School. But then they say horseback riding is good exercise.

Cyclist Eric McIntyre made a stop in Roswell Wednesday in his cross country bicycle tour to raise money to help his wife Liz battle pancreatic cancer. McIntyre, 57, left his home in New Orleans on April 19 to embark on what he calls the “Pancreatic Cancer Victory Tour,” during which he will ride 7,200 miles in 110 days through 18 states.
