TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The U.S. strongly warned Iran on Wednesday against closing a vital Persian Gulf waterway that carries onesixth of the world’s oil supply, after Iran threatened to choke off traffic through the Strait of Hor muz if Washington imposes sanctions targeting the country’s crude exports. The increasingly heated exchange raises new tensions in a standoff that has the potential to spark military reprisals and spike oil prices to levels that could batter an already fragile

global economy. Iran’s navy chief said Wednesday that it would be “very easy” for his country’s forces to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passage at the mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about 15 million barrels of oil pass daily. It was the second such warning by Iran in two days, reflecting Tehran’s concern that the West is about to impose new sanctions that could hit the country’s biggest source of revenue, oil. “Iran has comprehensive control over the strategic

COWBOYS NEED ANOTHER ROAD WIN

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Dallas was in desperate need of a victory when Jason Garrett made his successful head coaching debut with a win on the road against the New York Giants midway through last season. The Cowboys are back in a similar situation, and there is even more on the line as Garrett has come full circle. Garrett’s 24th game, the finale of his first full regular season, is another trip to face the Giants. - PAGE B3

waterway,” Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV, as the country was in the midst of a 10day military drill near the strategic waterway. The comments drew a quick response from the U.S. “This is not just an important issue for security and stability in the region, but is an economic lifeline for countries in the Gulf, to include Iran,” Pentagon press secretary George Little said. “Interference with

SANTA FE (AP) — Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a longshot candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said Wednesday he is leaving the GOP in favor of running as a Libertarian. Johnson told a news conference at the state Capitol that the decision was difficult, but that he was “deeply disappointed” by the treatment he received in the Republican nomination process. “I had hoped to lay out a real Libertarian message on all the issues in the Republican contest. The process was not fair and open,” he said. Johnson has been excluded from all but two GOP presidential debates. He also has barely registered in the polls. The former two-term gov-

At least two Roswell families are mourning the loss of a military serviceman who passed away Christmas Eve. Staf f Sgt. Christopher Martinez, 28, passed away Saturday in Georgia. The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation, said his stepfather, Greg Etter. Neither Greg Etter nor Martinez’s mother Sally Etter wanted to dwell on Martinez’s death. Instead, they spoke of his life — in particular, his desire to serve his country and his impact on family and friends. “Christopher was a very loving, very gentle soul,”

said Greg Etter. “He touched everyone ... he made everyone laugh. At the time of his death he was thinking of other people, other than himself.” Martinez joined the Air Force soon after graduating from Roswell High School in 2001, Etter said. That same year, he received basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Etter said Martinez was overseas for stretches of time, but often was not allowed to say exactly where he was, nor give details of the mission. Still, Etter said Martinez had been to Iraq, Afghanistan, the United Kingdom and Germany. See AIRMAN, Page A3

for college preparations

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — New Mexico high school students will get more access to advanced placement classes and be able to take the PSAT for free under a plan unveiled Wednesday by Gov. Susana Martinez. Martinez said the budget recommendations to the 2012 Legislature also include more frequent testing to ensure students are learning what they need to know to get into college. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce,” Martinez said at the University of New Mexico. “When they graduate high school, New Mexico stu-

dents deserve every advantage to make sure they are successful in college. When our students ear n their diplomas, they expect to have all the skills they need for college. These reforms will help us deliver on that promise.” The recommendations call for $4.2 million to fund increased access to AP programs, and $2.5 million for statewide short-cycle tests for more than 180,000 students in grades 4 through 10. Martinez said such tests help teachers identify gaps in learning and adjust their instruction. Some disSee EDUCATION, Page A3
